ABN Amro Ex-CEO Found Dead

Tyler Durden's picture

A mere two weeks since former JPMorgan banker, Kenneth Bellando jumped to his death, Bloomberg reports that the former CEO of Dutch Bank ABN Amro (and his wife and daughter) were found dead at their home after a possible "family tragedy." This expands the dismal list of senior financial services executive deaths to 12 in the last few months. The 57-year-old Jan Peter Schmittmann, was reportedly discovered by his other daughter when she arrived home that morning. Police declined to comment on the cirumstances of his (and his wife and daughter's) death. This is not the first C-level ABN Amro banker to be found dead. In 2009, former CFO Huibert Boumeester was discovered with (assumed self-inflicted) shotgun wounds.

As Bloomberg reports,

Former ABN Amro Group NV Netherlands Chief Executive Officer Jan Peter Schmittmann, his wife and a daughter were found dead at their home today after a possible “family tragedy,” Dutch police said.

The bodies of a father and mother and their daughter were found at the property” in the town of Laren, 32 kilometers (20 miles) southeast of Amsterdam, Dutch police said in a statement on their website today. Leonie Bosselaar, a police spokeswoman, said in a telephone call with Bloomberg News that the deceased were Schmittmann and two family members.

The police received a call around 10:30 a.m. local time from a family acquaintance who said something may be wrong at the property, according to the statement. Bosselaar declined to comment further on what may have happened.

The Dutch newspaper AD reported, without citing anyone, that the family was discovered by Schmittmann’s second daughter when she arrived home this morning. She was scheduled to travel to India with her parents, where she had an internship lined up, the newspaper said.

Schmittmann, 57, joined ABN Amro in 1983 as assistant relationship manager and was named head of the lender’s Dutch unit in 2003. He stepped down from the Amsterdam-based bank in December 2008, after the company was nationalized earlier that year.

Sadly, given recent trends, the default assumption is that it is suicide until proven otherwise which is just as disturbing from a sociological perspective. (on the bright side, at least as far as we know, we was not involved in HFT) but further to that, this is not the first ABN Amro seniot executve to be found dead. In 2009, Schmittmann's former CFO was found dead from shitgum wounds:

The former chief financial officer of Dutch bank ABN Amro has been found dead with shotgun wounds near his home in Surrey, the BBC has reported.

Huibert Gerard Boumeester was found dead yesterday, Sunday, with shotgun wounds, one week after being reported missing and “vulnerable”. Reports claim he was found with two shotguns which he had brought from his home, though Thames Valley Police say his death is currently being treated as "unexplained".

Boumeester, 49, left his role as CFO encompassing responsibility for group-wide finance, risk management, investor relations, communications and strategic decision support in March 2008 citing "personal reasons" six months after ABN Amro was bought by Fortis, Royal Bank of Scotland and Santander. The Dutch government now owns Fortis Bank and has taken direct ownership of its stake in ABN Amro. The British government owns most of RBS.

There are suggestions that Boumeester took his own life...

Schmittmann owned 2phase2 (apparently an asset management company) and was a co-founder of 5 Park Lane (what appears to be a private equity / management consultancy) according to his LinkedIn profile:

This brings the sad list of senior financial services exectives who have died in the last few months to 12:

1 - William Broeksmit, 58-year-old former senior executive at Deutsche Bank AG, was found dead in his home after an apparent suicide in South Kensington in central London, on January 26th.

2 - Karl Slym, 51 year old Tata Motors managing director Karl Slym, was found dead on the fourth floor of the Shangri-La hotel in Bangkok on January 27th.

3 - Gabriel Magee, a 39-year-old JP Morgan employee, died after falling from the roof of the JP Morgan European headquarters in London on January 27th.

4 - Mike Dueker, 50-year-old chief economist of a US investment bank was found dead close to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington State.

5 - Richard Talley, the 57 year old founder of American Title Services in Centennial, Colorado, was found dead earlier this month after apparently shooting himself with a nail gun.

6 - Tim Dickenson, a U.K.-based communications director at Swiss Re AG, also died last month, however the circumstances surrounding his death are still unknown.

7 - Ryan Henry Crane, a 37 year old executive at JP Morgan died in an alleged suicide just a few weeks ago.  No details have been released about his death aside from this small obituary announcement at the Stamford Daily Voice.

8 - Li Junjie, 33-year-old banker in Hong Kong jumped from the JP Morgan HQ in Hong Kong this week.

9 - James Stuart Jr, Former National Bank of Commerce CEO, found dead in Scottsdale, Ariz., the morning of Feb. 19. A family spokesman did not say whatcaused the death

10 - Edmund (Eddie) Reilly, 47, a trader at Midtown’s Vertical Group, commited suicide by jumping in front of LIRR train

11 - Kenneth Bellando, 28, a trader at Levy Capital, formerly investment banking analyst at JPMorgan, jumped to his death from his 6th floor East Side apartment.

12 - Jan Peter Schmittmann, 57, the former CEO of Dutch bank ABN Amro found dead at home near Amsterdam with wife and daughter.

So-called “suicides” in high places have been part of the American saga through wars and intrigue for the past 100 years. And none of the intrigue would have been possible without the secrecy and the printing press of the Federal Reserve.

Take the case of the United Nations. The UN was designed as a hotbed for information leaks to Communist countries by its chief architect, Alger Hiss.

“Yet, few Americans know,” says John A. Stormer in None Dare Call It Treasons…25 Years Later, “that the UN Secretariat had become a haven for the Communists and the security risks '(risks' back when they were considered ‘risks’) who had been officials in the U.S. government in the 1940s.”

In 1952, the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee found in all, 21 American employees in key UN administrative posts who took the Fifth Amendment during hearings when asked about their participation in Communist espionage.

“But even if it were possible to eliminate all Americans of doubtful loyalty,” writes Stormer, “many Communists still hold key UN positions, working not for the best interest of the UN as a whole,” but working for world communism.

How “suicide” actually works in practice is documented in a Senate committee report which studied the case of Povl Bang-Jensen in 1961. Writes Stormer:

“To protect Hungarian Freedom Fighters who testified before the UN Committee on Hungary from possible Communist reprisals, Povl Bank-jensen, a Danish diplomat and assistant secretary of the committee, refused to divulge their names. In addition, he charged, and documented, that errors were being written into the draft of the Committee’s report which would make the document a laughing stock rather than a sharp indictment of Communist terror in Hungary.

“To discredit and silence him, UN medical authorities circulated a report intimating that Bang-Jensen was ‘mentally ill.’ He was dismissed by Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold. Meanwhile, he had assembled evidence, from two Russian wishing to defect, that the Communists has achieved working control of the highest policy-making levels in the UN Secretariat.

“Two years later, after his sanity had been established by a reputable psychiatrist, and a long fight to get official recognition of his story, Bang-Jensen was found, shot to death near his New York home. Police quickly labeled the death a suicide.

“The United States Senate Internal Security Sub-committee after an 18-month study of the case said:

‘It is the opinion of this report, however, that the finding of suicide was based on incomplete evidence. There are too many solid arguments against suicide, too many unanswered questions, too many serious reason for suspecting Soviet motivation and the possibility of Soviet implication.’

Note the pattern. First, an attempt to discredit the Dane with unfounded charges of ‘mental illness’ and later a probably phony suicide, at which the Communists are past masters.

"Rigged Thinking"

Bankers are dead, now we don't need to send Obama or the FBI to fix the problem, the problem solved, so goes the thinking.

The problem of course is that virtually nobody on these lists was a 'banker', the Unicorn's have loosed the term 'banker' to be so general that it includes stock-brokers, and janitors of banks.

Most of the guys died of natural cause, but that never stops speculation that it was a 'banker suicide'.

Why this kind NARRATIVE, it could only be for one reason, the PTB want's you to think the 'banker problem' has already been self-solved.

It has not been SOLVED "The bankers are still alive and running the US-MIL and fucking our lives".

ABN AMRO said it will create a renewable energy private equity fund to make major investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency companies. The focus of the fund is global with a target market of OECD countries and select emerging markets.

The company is committing to investing up to $63 million equivalent (€50 million) for its own account with the remaining funds to be raised from institutional investors, for a minimum fund size of US$ 190 million equivalent (€150 million). The Fund will seek to measure CO2 reduction created by its investments.

Following the Clinton Global Initiative in 2005, ABN AMRO approved a corporate Climate Change Position. ABN AMRO committed to a 15% reduction of its energy consumption by 2008, and to further offset CO2 emissions through a private equity investment fund to invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency offsets.

The Enel Group—Italy’s global power company and a leader in geothermal power generation—pledged to at least double over the coming 24 months the amount applied to investment in and acquisition of renewables in developing and/or transition countries.

That doubling, compared to the average amount per year invested in 2001-2005, works out to a $400-million commitment over two years.

Citigroup, Bank of America Sued by Madoff Trustee

Citigroup Inc.’s Citibank, Bank of America Corp.’s Merrill Lynch unit and five other banks were sued by the trustee liquidating Bernard Madoff’s firm to recover more than $1 billion for the con man’s defrauded customers.

The banks, which include Natixis SA, Fortis Prime Fund Solutions Bank (Ireland) Ltd., ABN Amro Bank NV, Nomura Bank International Plc. and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA, received money through Madoff feeder funds when they knew, or should have known, that Madoff’s investments were a fraud, the trustee, Irving Picard, said yesterday in a statement.

Picard, who faces a two-year legal deadline that runs out Dec. 11, has filed hundreds of suits in the past month, seeking more than $34 billion from banks, feeder funds, investors and others alleged to have profited from Madoff’s decades-long Ponzi scheme, the biggest in history. So far, Picard has recovered about $2.5 billion for victims of the fraud.

ABN AMRO in Tajik Cotton agriculture deal with Ecom

AMSTERDAM (Commodity Online): The Agricultural Commodities team of ABN AMRO's Energy, Commodities & Transportation (ECT) business has entered into a partnership with long standing client Ecom Agroindustrial Corp. Ltd., to jointly finance sustainable cotton production by smallholder farmers and increase yields in Tajikistan.

Central Asian republics are the world?s third largest cotton exporting region after the USA and India, but yields in Tajikistan remain relatively low due to inefficient production practices and a shortage of quality seeds and fertilizers.

I recall when ABN Amro was acquiring farms in India when all those farmers were committing suicide too, for exactly the same reasons.

UC RUSAL Completes USD 2.35 Billion Syndicated Credit Facility Deal Over-Subscribed, Pricing Unaffected by Credit Crisis

http://news.thomasnet.com/companystory/UC-RUSAL-Completes-USD-2-35-Billi...

Press release date: November 20, 2007

Moscow, 20 November 2007 - UC RUSAL, the world's largest aluminium and alumina producer, is pleased to announce the completion of a deal to attract a long-term syndicated credit facility. This is the first syndicated credit of this size received by the group following the creation of United Company RUSAL.

A syndicate of banks was mandated in June to arrange the facility. During syndication, the deal attracted a large volume of requests for participation from international banks, resulting in a decision to increase the size of the facility. The original amount sought was $2.0 billion and this was increased to $2.35 billion to accommodate demand.

The loan is provided for seven years with a two year grace period before amortization. The average interest rate of LIBOR+0.8%, which was agreed prior to syndication, is unprecedented in current financial markets.

Oleg Mukhamedshin, Director, Capital Markets, commenting on the deal, said: "The deal to attract the first long-term syndicated facility after the creation of United Company RUSAL has demonstrated the strong credibility that the group has established with leading international banks. Despite the credit crisis, we have successfully closed the deal at the price set before recent market turmoil and achieved a significant level of oversubscription."

The funds will be used to refinance the existing debt of UC RUSAL companies and optimize the group's credit portfolio.

The Initial Mandated Lead Arrangers of the facility were ABN Amro, Barclays, BNP Paribas, Calyon, Citi, ING, Natixis, SocGen. ABN Amro, BNP Paribas, Calyon, Citigroup, Natixis acted as bookrunners. ABN Amro was appointed Documentation and Facility agent, while Natixis acted as Offtake agent.

Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd., Bayerische Landesbank, Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank AG, Commerzbank AG, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation have joined the transaction as Co-mandated Lead Arrangers ahead of the launch of the general syndication which closed oversubscribed with additional banks joining in the general syndication phase.

"United Company Rusal has assembled a strong group of Mandated Lead Arrangers and has been able to draw upon a significant amount of liquidity at a time when the credit markets have been extremely volatile and challenging for companies wishing to raise capital. The success of this facility is a reflection of the Company's elevation to the global league of metals and mining bluechip corporates", said David Hague, Director, Global Markets, ABN AMRO Bank N.V.

Here's my 2 cents:

  • The pattern of deaths appears to be sending a warning
  • The dead are bankers and their IT staff
  • This implies financial crimes are being covered up
  • This implies financial crimes are being investigated
  • Conclusion:  There are factions battling it out
  • Conclusion: The struggle is for life and death
  • Conclusion: The crimes are so bad the public will want blood
  • Get some popcorn

Here's my 1.5 cents worth:

- they are being suicided because of their role in crashing the criminal banking system, which has seriously damaged profits.

- they are being suicided because they "know too much" about "who's who" and "what's been going on" and risked exposing it all.

Both of the above imply that the perps are either from within the banking fraternity itself or an "agency of the State".

Or maybe they got in bed with some really bad people. Cartels , Mob , Chechen gangstas... those kinda folks. Took their money and failed to deliver. Not a healthy thing to do. There´s a lof of those monies floating around in off-shore funds. Look at Madoff. After he made off with other peoples money he took the wise decision that the only place safe for him was solitary confinement. Harder to get at but not impossible. What do ya think his odds are...? On another note - any news on Jon Corzine? What kinda odds do ya think a bookie will lay down?

ah - the bank the helped fund the bin laden network...  google sherman skolnick, abn and you will learn that this bank has mores skeletons than many of the others that get bashed (and rightfully so) here daily...  abn is a huge power player and this could have more implications than originally meets the eyes

I want to know what "shitgum" was doing in Tyler's spellchecker dictionary! If only shitgums were indeed lethal, there'd be far fewer arse-kissers in the world, particularly in the financial sector.

The deceased daughter was presumably handicapped.

De omgekomen dochter speelde in het gehandicaptenteam van de club. Het team heeft vanmiddag kort stilgestaan bij haar dood.

No official cause of death released until later this week. This could have very well been a tragic accident until foul play has either been suggested or confirmed.

The ex banker received 8 million Euro in 2008 when ABN AMRO was nationalized. This is being reported across Holland in connection with the tragedy. The Dutch were rightfully pissed at the time. ABN AMRO nationalized its losses.

Let's see what Dutch authorities will release later this week.

Shit only rolls downhill for so long.

Once it piles up deep enough, it will reach those at the top who are shitting on everyone.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

I started lighting a candle every time a silver stacker offed himself after losing the 40 handle, then 30, then 20, then the wife, but my place began to look like the Cistine Chapel during Holy Week, so I stopped.

There has never been a better time to be wealthy, because wealth affords one the chance to live not only separate from the ones who have done harm to the system (the actual ones, which does not include everyone who has ever just walked past a bank), but also the losers who find some perverse pleasure in even a child's death.

Enjoy your sewer, Zerohedgers.  Perhaps the world will take similar joy in yours and your loved ones deaths?

Hey, Chindit......No one finds glee in a child's death, dipwad.  The point of reaction to this banker's murder-suicide is that if he's wired to murder his family after he's made off with millions and living the good life, what the fuck do you think that psycho pervert was doing to everyone else while he ran Abn Amro and forced hundreds of thousands of people into their own suicidal modes?   Who are you to preach, lugnut?  The reason readers are reacting to this story is because the world is still filled with people exactly like this dead pervert who are still running the planet.  I personally feel sad for his family, but at the same time, I wish every fucking banker on the planet would eat a shotgun shell or take a long walk off a short 10 story ledge, and the sooner the better

Maybe these are the guys who were gonna tell us that as soon as the guns are gone that the bankers will foreclose on the bankrupt country and take ownership of the all the land.  Then anyone who disagress will be placed in internment camps run by FEMA.  Or, maybe they are just thinking, "who the heck wants to stick around for that?"

We don't know if it was suicide. I think it's just as plausible that at least some of these guys are being knocked off. Either way, something big would have to be happening behind the scenes for someone to take their own life or for the big boys to be putting out hits on these banker/financial executives.

Just take a few numbers and run them: 5% of people are subjected to psychiatric diseases. the larger part of them is medicated so they are able to live a normal productive life. people fit to work in a bank is usually very obsessive about order. This is a good trait until it go out of control and people is not just able to complete task in time because they check and re-check everything .

Top managers usually show, also, psychopatic tendencies. They lie, steal, backstab, to get to position of power.

Usually their lies and wrongdoing are covered in someway (if they are not outcompeted by someone else).
But, when their world start to crumble, they start to have no way to avoid the consequences of their actions and often are unwilling to accept them.
So they fall in a deep depression and sometimes decide to kill themselves and their families.

Being intelligent and willful they usually get it done right at the first attempt.
