UN Reports Fukushima Is Not Chernobyl; Expects No "Significant Changes" In Cancer Rates

Tyler Durden's picture

Just as we should be re-assured by Shinzo Abe's declaration that the Olympics will be 'safe' in Japan (despite his incessant calls for recovery in the Japanese economy when it is actually collapsing under its own devalued currency import costs); the UN is out with a report that states it did not expect “significant changes” in future cancer rates that could be attributed to radiation exposure from the reactor meltdowns. The levels, according to their report, were much lower than Chernobyl and therefore the Fukushima nuclear disaster is unlikely to lead to a rise in people developing cancer. But... some children 'might' have received doses that could affect their risk of developing cancer later in life...

Via Japan Times,

The Fukushima nuclear disaster is unlikely to lead to a rise in people developing cancer as happened after Chernobyl in 1986, even though the most exposed children may face an increased risk, U.N. scientists said Wednesday.

In a major study, the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) said it did not expect “significant changes” in future cancer rates that could be attributed to radiation exposure from the reactor meltdowns.

The amounts of radioactive substances such as iodine-131 released after the 2011 accident were much lower than after Chernobyl, and Japanese authorities also took action to protect people living near the stricken plant, including evacuations.

...

No discernible changes in future cancer rates and hereditary diseases are expected due to exposure to radiation as a result of the Fukushima nuclear accident,” UNSCEAR said in a statement accompanying its nearly 300-page study.

...

The occurrence of a large number of radiation-induced thyroid cancers as were observed after Chernobyl can be discounted because doses were substantially lower,” it said.

But, having said all that, the UNSCEAR report finds...

...some children — estimated at fewer than 1,000 — might have received doses that could affect their risk of developing thyroid cancer later in life...

UNSCEAR chairman Carl-Magnus Larsson said there was a theoretical increased risk among the most exposed children for this type of cancer, which is rare among the young.

But “we are not sure that this is going to be something that will be captured in the thyroid cancer statistics in future,” he told a news conference.

So, in summary: The UN finds that a) Fukushima is 'unlikely' to cause cancer rates to rise, but b) some children might have been exposed to cancer-increasing doses, however c) you will never know coz the data probably won't show it...

Seems like a good enough excuse to allow people back into the death zone?

I wrote this in April of last year.  Still appropriate now.

Mark my words.

The cancer deaths in 5-10 years caused by Fukushima are going to be much lower than Cherynobyl.  Not because Cherynobyl was worse, as you, Trampy, point out Fukushima is significantly worse.  It should be 11 instead of tied with C at 6.

The reason that I believe the cancer rates will be lower is because of the amount of iodine that the Japanese people ingest.  On average it is about 13 mg per day, which originates in the seaweed that they eat.  This is about 86 times the US's RDA of 150 mcg per day, which is still more than the Ukrainians got on average when Cherynobyl ruptured.

Iodine is the one halogen that is necessary for us to live and pushes the other three cancer causing halogens out of our bodies (bromide, fluoride, and chlorine). I believe that we also need it to prevent cancer since it acts as a shield in our body. Our iodine RDA was established because it is the minimal amount needed to prevent hideous growths from our necks (goiters) and to prevent cretinism.

Indeed. Strontium-90 goes straight to the bones and has a half-life close to three decades. I say fresh fish direct from the western Pacific, supplemented with some steamy Fukushima rice and veggies should be served daily at the UN cafeteria...with plenty of second helpings for the scientists.

Can you cite any life long ingestion studies showing that exposure to the radioactive elements you mentioned have the same effect on Japanese nationals as it does on a population with low iodine ingestion rates?  Americans' RDA is ~1/85 of what the average Japanese person ingests daily in their meals.  Humans brains and thyroids have to have iodine be healthy.  The debate is over how much should be ingested.

Moving to Carlsbad would be unscientific as the sample would be too small.  Comparing the populations in two countries though is something that can be done.

The Japanese should be less healthy than Americans since there are about 110 million living in an area smaller than California: they smoke ~twice as much: and they've had two atom bombs dropped on them.

When Japanese people move to America they adopt Americans' higher lung and breast cancer and obesity rates.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deinococcus_radiodurans

Ionizing radiation resistance

D. radiodurans is capable of withstanding an acute dose of 5,000 Gy (500,000 rad) of ionizing radiation with almost no loss of viability, and an acute dose of 15,000 Gy with 37% viability. A dose of 5,000 Gy is estimated to introduce several hundred double-strand breaks (DSBs) into the organism's DNA (~0.005 DSB/Gy/Mbp (haploid genome)). For comparison, a chest X-ray or Apollo mission involves about 1 mGy, 5 Gy can kill a human, 200-800 Gy will kill E. coli, and over 4,000 Gy will kill the radiation-resistant tardigrade.

BTW, tardigrades are cool.

Tardigrades are classified as extremophiles, organisms that can thrive in a physically or geochemically extreme condition that would be detrimental to most life on Earth.

For example, tardigrades can withstand temperatures from just above absolute zero to well above the boiling point of water, pressures about six times greater than those found in the deepest ocean trenches, ionizing radiation at doses hundreds of times higher than the lethal dose for a human, and the vacuum of outer space. They can go without food or water for more than 10 years, drying out to the point where they are 3% or less water, only to rehydrate, forage, and reproduce.

That was an interview on May 12, 1996 and those were UN figures.  But as CIA Iraq analyst Susan Lindauer points out, the UN was counting only the deaths of children 5 and under.  The UN was then instructed not to count death of children in Iraq as the numbers were too large.  Susan Lindauer estimates that between 1.7 and 2.1 million Iraqis died due to sanctions.

Madeline Albright received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Obama in 2012, the highest honor that the country bestows upon civilians.

She (Susan Lindauer) opposed the Iraq sanctions which had killed 1.7 to 2.1 million people.

Madeline learned from the best:

The report’s damning conclusions continued: Had the U.S. not encouraged the Kurds to go along with the Shah and renew hostilities with Iraq, “the Kurds might have reached an accommodation with [Iraq’s] central government, thus gaining at least a measure of autonomy while avoiding further bloodshed. Instead the Kurds fought on, sustaining thousands of casualties and 200,000 refugees.”

One of the officials who testified before the committee in secret session was Henry Kissinger. When questioned by an appalled congressman about the U.S.’s decision to abandon the Kurds to their bloody fate, Kissinger chided the committee, “One should not confuse undercover action with social work.”

Chemi-Kil by Exodus

Politicians, they're all on the take
Toxic polluters, leave cancer in their wake
Campaign contributions are nothing more bribes
Pockets growing, fatter at the expense of all our lives

Now we'll grab them by their white collar
And throw them in the waste
Look at them floating in the cess
They're such a f*****g disgrace

They just want
To make another buck
They couldn't care what happens
They wouldn't give a f**k
Their big house way up on a hill
Was paid for in death
It's chemi-kill!

They don't know what to do with it
They don't want to keep it around
So they pull up behind my back door
And bury it underground
We scream and yell but they just laugh
On the way to make a withdrawal
But we've got to ram it down their throats
Make them eat it all

Babies are lying in their womb
Dying in their private tomb
Born retarded, crippled and lame
But they say they're not to blame
Tumors are growing in my spleen
The children are turning green
We're dropping one by one
Is this the end of all our fun?

How can they get
Away with this?
We take them to court
But it gets dismissed
They've bought off the judge
So he throws out the case

There goes the human race!

"Wars coming start running
Eyes blinded by the nuclear blast
Hearts beating retreating
All around are bodies burned to ash
Children crying and people dying
No salvation from this holocaust
Bodies burning and now their learning
In war painful death's the bloody cost

Life ends in sin
God cries world dies

And then there were none
The world starts to burn
The world powers learn
The satans work is done

Wheels grinding the glare's blinding
Bullets flying all around your head
Tanks crushing and soldiers rushing
If you live you'll wish that you were dead
Stop praying there's no saving
No salvation from your fiery grave
Brains swelling bodies smelling
And Satan comes to see that no one's saved"

No joke.

In 1959 the World Health Organisation entered into an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency which gave the unequivocally pro-nuclear IAEA a veto over WHO research into the effects of radiation.....Under the WHO/IAEA Agreement (WHA12-40) of 28 May 1959, the IAEA has assumed a power of veto over WHO's activities. Similar "agreements" constrain other UN agencies....

Is rarioactive Iodine is the only isotope released inFukushima that can cause cancer?  Are they f*&^ing kidding/who are they f*&^ing kidding?

As if other than thyroid there are no other cancers caused by radiation exposire.

Cesium, Strontium, Plutonium, and "the rest" - still leaking into the ocean, while Chernobyl was "plugged up" within several weeks and concrete "sarcophagus" installed within months.  Even if fuel pools don't collapse and there will be no new major structural failures, the total amount of radiation released by Fukushima will be 100s of times greater than in Chernobyl.

Reverberations from the Chile earthquake are already beginning to show up around the Pacific 'ring of fire'. All those tanks filled with radioactive water perched on the hills above Fukushima look mighty vulnerable to me. When I look from Google earth I don't really see anything standing between the tanks and the sea - should they receive a good shaking and let it all go. Putting tanks on hills is kinda like putting generators in the basement - same genius thinking at work.

Here's a simple question. What data are they using to reach this conclusion?

Did they send a UN sponsered team of impartial scientists and technicians to Japan to take measurements and construct an unbiased analysis?

Or did they just gather up all the official, party-line, highly massaged data the Japanese Gov tosses out in an effort to obscure the truth?

One banker famously expressed

discontent about supply competition

from China.

To me that's alien.

To me if people there, as

well as here, can now afford

more, than that's more for

them also.

If it's not working out for

someone, then you say you guys

will have to give us a break

till we produce a prosperous

and healthy life here, democratically

and cooperatively, instead of saying,

we're going to have to invest

vast sums in maybe murdering you

because you and we live under

the domain of rich people with

puppets, and that's actually not

democratic and cooperative.

It it's democracy there, meaning

collective bargaining, at least,

even in the absence of employment

choice, then wages should adjust,

and transportation costs should

matter more.

But now, China's obviously

gunning for the Senkaku Islands.

For the longest time it's seemed

like simply taking advantage of

Japan's new vulnerability, though

really all Tokyo has to do is mount

some of Fukushima on a barge,

re-name it the Fukushima Maru,

and dock it at the islands.

But, in fact, has Beijing seen

Japan in the same light as did the

banker?

Do they also think there's one

large economy too many?

It should never have to be the

case.

Not simply cause of this

http://pages.citebite.com/r1h6b0n7u3bui

but cause of the above:

now you can afford more pizza

where you are, so you need

a pizzeria too.

However, what if it should ever

be the case that one large

economy IS in trouble?

Is Beijing not actually taking

advantage of the vulnerable as

much as it is postering for

a shrunken Japanese influence?

Japan was always energy starved.

Solar tech emerged late.

The above essentially implies Beijing

views Fukushima the way Star Fleet

viewed Praxis.

Of course this

http://truth-out.org/news/item/20362-everyday-low-wages-at-walmart-broug...

implies, if the

underlying facts are true of course,

that Americans subsidize the maintenance

of low American wages in the importation from

China.

Hopefully Tokyo will encase the plant,

including with outside help if needed,

and help themselves prior to suffering

greater catastrophe.

HAHAHA! What a fucking joke the UN/WHO is. Anyone with half a fucking brain knows that the garbage pouring out of Fukushima is going to be devastating for the northern hemisphere, and Fuku is about 10,000 times worse than Chernobyl ever was. Everyone talks about Cesium and Strontium ignoring all the other horrific material unleashed by the core meltdowns over there. When reactors #3 and #4 went tits up, they released plutonium and uranium into the environment (among LOTS of other nasty particles) since they were MOX reactors. Fuel rods were exploded into tiny bits and shot all over the place. I think some US gov. worker said he was taking a helicopter ride towards Fuku and when they got close to the reactors to visibly inspect the damaged, his Geiger counters readings were so high, he said that there was open air fission taking place! The cooling ponds above the reactors were destroyed and for a while (and still going on?) the fuel rods were on fire! I don't think a human can set foot inside reactors 1 and 2 or 2 and 3 due to the high radiation levels. Robots were sent in to inspect things but their electronics fried hours later. When radiation alarms started going off at west coast facilities, the US government simply shut them off and kept raising the bar on what they called a "safe" limit to radiation exposure. In reactor # 4, the workers walk around on lead slabs that cover the floor because the radiation levels are so high. Every day/week, reports of even higher amounts of radiation are being recorded. If this continues, work at the site will have to be abandoned. Do you know that nobody can locate the melted cores because of the high levels of radiation involved?

For something a little more closer to home, read up on WIPP in New Mexico.

To sum it up, the UN can shove that report up their ass. I feel pity for the people of Japan. Your government continues to lie to you about the hell you're all in for. You are all doomed. Cheer up though, you have the Olympics to look forward to in the coming years and the radiation coming across the Pacific will eventually take a heavy toll on the US as well.

I'm awaiting the leukemia and cancer epidemic after Chernobyl.
After 30 years there was nothing to show up.

The children with thyroid cancer were mainly caused by Soviet disregard of human life ( they allowed people to eat vegetables from the contaminated zone after the explosion ) .
The explosion throw out pieces of the reactors charmber.

Fukushima was a continuous leakage for weeks.

It is the difference of getting a bucket of water in a sigle shot or drop by drop.

The iodine leaking from the reactor in Fukushima decayed in 8 days. And the leak continued for weeks, tapering down.
So, there was never more than a small quantity of iodine in the terrain, water, air.
Tokyo air, at the top of the scare, was 50% less radioactive than Rome (data from the Protezione Civile Team sent from Italy to the embassy).
So, if you fear for radioactivity in Japan Olympic Games, please do not check a travel to Rome, it is much worse every day of the year.

And do not air travel.
