More Americans Go Hungry Than All But 2 European Nations

Tyler Durden's picture

Since 2007, when the financial crisis touched down across the world, the proportion of people going hungry in Europe has soared, according to the OECD. As Bloomberg's Niraj Shah notes, the number has doubled in Greece alone from 8.9% in 2007 to almost 18% currently unable to afford food. Across the European Union, the proportion of people going hungry ranges from 4.6% in Germany to over 30% in (ironically) Hungary. However, before one gloats at the weakness in Europe and the cleanest dirty shirt the US pretends to be, at 21.1% of Americans unable to afford food, only Hungary and Estonia are in worst shape... USA USA USA...

At least in California, the only people going hungry are either those too lazy to drag their sorry carcasses to the nearest DHS office for food stamps, cash aid, child care, Medi-Cal, Medi-Care, Section-8 housing, WIC, Foster care payments, Welfare to Work Subsidies, travel vouchers,...

... or small children whose parents just spent all the TANF money and food stamps on crack, cigarettes and beer.

there are 2 kinds of malnutrition, caloric deficiency and protein deficiency in the face of adequate calories (kwashiorkor)

Lacking a specific vitamin or mineral in the modern era is almost impossible (seen much scurvey lately?)

Health Nazis will rail about various quality issues (and I agree I don't want to eat a welfare diet myself) but true starvation...prove me the ribs (or red hair and bloated belly in the case of kwashiorkor).

Reminds of the old Soviet anecdote.

American and Soviet generals brag about how well their soldiers fed.

- Soviet general: my soldiers on average eat an equivalent of 2500 calories a day.

- US general: phew, mine are eating 5000 calories a day!

- Soviet general: I call that bullshit! One soldier cannot consume two bags of rutabaga every day!

Nutritionly poor, high caloric food will do that, it is like US dollars. Purchasing power (nutritionily poor) poor, high face (caloric) money USD. It is the same shit and produces the same effects. It is manufactured theft whether you do it with processed food or through inflation with money. Same end results, fat and bloated systems tapped out starving a slow death as the gap widens between the 2. They are trying to kill us on all levels instead of bring things into balance.

You eat nutritionly rich food you need less calories relative to your needs same with money it has more purchasing power you need less of it relative to needs.

The problem is ingrained into the most basic and core things in society and any solutions not addressing this is just more of the same. And people will ridicule people like myself over things crypto-currencies like bitcoin that are trying to break this relationship and bring things back in line.

All obesity-related conditions and complications are symptoms of malnutrition, as obesity is indeed a form of chronic malnutrition.

Also, if they're not counting people on foodstamp programs of every kind, private charity and public welfare, state, local, and federal, then the counts are absolutely meaningless. I think it would also be fair to claim that many people on welfare, foodstamps or no foodstamps, are technically unable to afford food no less than a panhandler with a coin cup - in the absense of some form of charity (whether it be private and unorganized or public and institutionalized), they'd both be starving.

Obesity is the result of eating SHIT, not the result of lack of food or too much food.

Anywhere in the world where people eat fresh food, and not processed food, obesity is rare.

Where you feed people process wheat or rice, sugar, and lots saturated fat,... they become obese because the body doesn't process this food.

When I go to the USA and go shopping, all I see people buying is frozen, or canned, or packaged food.

The problem is fresh veggies, and fresh meat, and fresh fruit is expensive. Those who are poor, but live near the source are not obese.

It's all by design, the USA wants a fat, dumb, and lazy public, so they can be controlled.

Also when you took people off the 'farm' and brought them to the city, you have what you have, ... those that live on the farm generally have happier healthier children.

Go to Ireland, and to the remote areas, you will see happy healthy children, to to LONDON you will see sick obese unhappy chlildren, just like the USA.

I'm sorry but it all comes down to physics and chemistry and physiology.  You can eat too much healthy food and be obese.  There are high calorie foods that aren't processed--nuts, eggs, dairy.....  The bottom line is that to gain weight, you must consume more calories than you expend.  If you eat 6000 calories of healthy non-processed foods per day and sit on your ass and don't exercise you will gain weight and become obese.  You could eat 2000 calories of junk, chips, fries, sweets and exercise like a fiend and be thin as a rail...

I'm not saying that it's right to eat junk--it's absolutely better to eat a healthy diet.  It's just that obesity comes down to calories consumed versus calories expended--bottom line.

I'm sorry but it all comes down to physics and chemistry and physiology.

Bullshit.  I was trained in the physical sciences, but I know that the human body/mind/spirit is a lot more complicated than a Carnot cycle.  Junk food has little nutritional content other than processed and refined carb calories.  People over eat that crap because their bodies tell them that they are starving, but starving for nutrients that are not contained in the garbage that they are eating.  A very bad news positive feedback loop.  There are other malicious factors involved as well such as GMO genetic reprograming etc.

This story is told with wit, compassion, and humor in the documentary, Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead which can be viewed for free at:

Caution:  Much of it is in Australian and without English subtitles :-)

I call bullshit on your bullshit.

I say that if you eat fewer calories than you expend, you will lose weight.  This is easily provable.

If you eat more calories than you expend, you will gain weight--also easily provable.

The more extreme the difference, the greater and faster the effect.

Not sure what physical sciences you were trained in.

I'd be happy to design an experiment for you to test this hypothesis.

I'd be more than happy to wager on the outcome.

Strictly speaking basic law of thermodynamics applies to the human body...

However, you need to consider the burn rate of those calories consumed and for this you look to a persons metabolism, example the teenage boy the can eat 5000 calories a day and be thin as a rail... What are the factors that control a persons metabolism?

The next part of the equation is... Why do people overeat?

And then an other consideration is why is it so difficult and painful to lose those extra pounds.

"Where you feed people process wheat or rice, sugar, and lots saturated fat,... they become obese because the body doesn't process this food."

If the body didn't process it then it wouldn't make you fat, it would just pass through your digestive system with no effect.

The basic problem is that your body is designed to store up fat and doesn't want to lose it.  Your DNA doesn't realize that you don't have to worry about storing up calories for the winter or for a famine anymore.  All this silliness about carbs and fresh vs processed is just confusing causation with correlation.  Processed foods are found in the same societies where food is plentiful and physical labor is uncommon.

I see two things to consider here:

1.) people are hungry because food is not available

2.) food is available but a sub-group of the population is not able to access it

1.) doesn't happen in the US, flat out too much food at very low prices.  2.) does happen, in particular to children and the elderly.  People who are dependent on others to get them access to food are screwed if their "others" are undependable.  Why do you think we have such huge school breakfast/lunch/dinner programs?  It's because the parents of a large part of school age children can't be bothered (for whatever reason, you choose one ...) to feed their kids.  And the elderly just plain out get forgotten.  I'm not sure it's 21.1%, but I could see the f-ed up nature of our current social network leaving these people hungry in a land of plenty.

If I were king and I could PULL FREE FIAT out of my ASS to INFINITY I would ..

Let's see I would put +60% of the people on the dole, and call them the FSA, and would give them all EBT cards to by processed food that made them weak, stupid, and lazy.

Then I would pick out the young who were physically attractive and groom them to be prostitutes, the rest just let them die. The strong I would groom to be police, to control those that are too smart for their own good.

The problem for all kings for all time is that you either thave KILL them all or make them all slaves. Killing them costs lots of money, the best thing in all history is to castrate all the males, and then make the attractive into sex toys, and the rest into workers.

The processed food will create enough disease to kill the weak, no needless money needs to be spent on KILLING, if you give them poison food, they will kill themselves.

Probably the biggest MYTH in intelligent man is that HUMAN life has value, no it doesn't life is closest to reality in AFRICA where the dead just lay there until family claims them, used to be much the same in CHINA years ago, and certainly the USA, if nobody claims the dead, you fed them to the pigs.

I can think no more contemporary example than MH-370, 240 dead, and nobody fucking cares,... except the immediate family, but they can't do shit, because they don't know where to collect the corpses,

HUMAN life has no value, and never has. Unicorn's probably ain't going to accept this truth, ... and I wish that it wasn't so, ... but this HUMAN as a good man, or good ape, ... is mythology, just go to Africa, and watch how Baboons live in the wild, ... its all about RAPE and MURDER.

Poor sad starving Americans. A recent article in the Huffington Post told how federal cutbacks were going to  affect Gwynn's food resources this year. In the spring, across-the-board budget reductions known as "sequestration" trimmed funding for senior nutrition programs.

Gwynn said she used to receive a hot lunch every weekday. "They took my lunches away because the sequester cut their budget so much they couldn't afford to pay the driver and they cut back to a once-a-week delivery," Gwynn said. The local agency on aging offered to bring seven frozen meals once a week, but Gwynn said no thanks. "When you live in an apartment you do not have a freezer large enough to hold what you already have in there and seven meals." More on this subject in the article below.

And americans' fat, both skinny and fat americans fat, is loaded with a toxin derived from cheap vegetable oils that industry foisted on us with help from government and industry sponsored researchers.   This toxin is called Arichdonic Acid, and your body makes too much of it when your diet is flooded with omega-6 fatty acids.   Cook with butter or oils with very little omega-6, and you will slowly slowly slowly rid your fat and membranes of excess toxic AA.

The real issue is that regardless of how people feel about Government programs we are currently facing a massive Federal deficit and that the food stamp program also known as SNAP should be reformed. The food purchased with food stamps should be limited to "only" approved basic and healthy foods like milk, eggs, potatoes, rice, chicken, and generic brands of peanut-butter, ice cream and bread.

Off the list should be premium and luxury items such as T-bone steak, and all the high price designer frozen and snack foods that fill Americas grocery stores. An example of where they should not be allowed is at the gas station-convenience store near my home where they can be used to purchase pop, cookies or a sandwich. Thoughts about how this program should be reformed in the article below.

Yes, and turn the majority of food assistance back over to charities.  Food stamps increase the money supply (since they spend exactly like cash), which increases demand, which increases prices.  Like night follows day.

I researched this a while back, and American households, businesses, restaurants, and grocery stores throw out billions of dollars' worth of food every year.

For some odd reason (sarc), the liberals who are so concerned about feeding the "hungry" are also the ones that won't let you make sandwiches for the homeless in the park and prevent restaurants and grocery stores from donating their leftovers to shelters.

The chart says "Unable to Afford Food."  That does not mean hungry.  The United States does not have hungry people, and neither does Europe.

It is interesting to note that the so-called study only included the US and Europe.  Has anybody ever heard of North Korea?  What about Zimbabwe?  Now those are countries with hungry people.

See, this study is to compare food stamp programs, and it is meant to shame the US into believing that we are not doing enough for our hungry people.  Thank goodness so many of you called BS on this ridiculous article.

In reading thru the above and below posts about "Welfare Queens", it strikes me that there is one thing missing from the 'thinking' that goes into these diatribes against them.

No where do I see the single most important reason why those who scam the welfare system should continue to do so, and for as long as they live.

The quadrillion dollars and never ending Welfare program for the Jewish Mafia on Wall Street.

How can you conscionably turn on your fellow man when Ben Bernanke and Hank Paulson, Tim Geithner, Jack Lew, and Janet Yellen, Peter Orszag, and Neil Kashkari give a few dozen Oligarchs newly printed money at zero per cent interest, no questions asked?

Until all that money plus 10% interest is added, compounded hourly, is clawed back, indictments flow like a river, and prosecutions begin against the Thieves of Wall Street those who are getting a paltry few $40,000 a year in living expenses without working for it, are the only ones who are being treated somewhat fairly.

The rest of the 330,000,000  are getting screwed into the ground, not by those few million who are getting away with something but by a single Tribe who owns our government.
