More Americans Go Hungry Than All But 2 European Nations

Tyler Durden's picture

Since 2007, when the financial crisis touched down across the world, the proportion of people going hungry in Europe has soared, according to the OECD. As Bloomberg's Niraj Shah notes, the number has doubled in Greece alone from 8.9% in 2007 to almost 18% currently unable to afford food. Across the European Union, the proportion of people going hungry ranges from 4.6% in Germany to over 30% in (ironically) Hungary. However, before one gloats at the weakness in Europe and the cleanest dirty shirt the US pretends to be, at 21.1% of Americans unable to afford food, only Hungary and Estonia are in worst shape... USA USA USA...

Because you see people rolling into ERs across the US every day suffering from malnutrition.

Sorry, but I'm flagging this bullshit.

boogerbently's picture

Unless, by "unable to afford food", they're using the Food Stamp numbers,

which completely discounts the fraud factor.

Bullshit. Americans still have the biggest feeding trough in the world, McDonalds still has the 99 cent menu. Supersize me mother fucker.

Pool Shark's picture

At least in California, the only people going hungry are either those too lazy to drag their sorry carcasses to the nearest DHS office for food stamps, cash aid, child care, Medi-Cal, Medi-Care, Section-8 housing, WIC, Foster care payments, Welfare to Work Subsidies, travel vouchers,...

... or small children whose parents just spent all the TANF money and food stamps on crack, cigarettes and beer.

What, there's no one left in the State with enough dignity, self-respect, or moral fortitude to resist Uncle Sam and his Devil's candy?

On the bright side -- the shit usually hits the fan shortly after the last resistance is "converted"

I regret that I only have but one up arrow to give for that statement.

21% of Americans go hungry searching for drugs, booze, concerts, and every other vice known to mankind.

Oh. I get it. They are not hungry, but they would be were it not for government assistance, but that is the whole purpose of government assistance - to put poor people on the new plantation that is government dependency. That is why those brave black men who have figured this out call themselves runaway slaves.

I have read somerwhere many obese people are actually malnourished.  Cheap manufactured food products offer just emty calories.  Eating them makes people fat but nutrition deficient.

lasvegaspersona's picture

there are 2 kinds of malnutrition, caloric deficiency and protein deficiency in the face of adequate calories (kwashiorkor)

Lacking a specific vitamin or mineral in the modern era is almost impossible (seen much scurvey lately?)

Health Nazis will rail about various quality issues (and I agree I don't want to eat a welfare diet myself) but true starvation...prove me the ribs (or red hair and bloated belly in the case of kwashiorkor).

BorisTheBlade's picture

Reminds of the old Soviet anecdote.

American and Soviet generals brag about how well their soldiers fed.

- Soviet general: my soldiers on average eat an equivalent of 2500 calories a day.

- US general: phew, mine are eating 5000 calories a day!

- Soviet general: I call that bullshit! One soldier cannot consume two bags of rutabaga every day!

Its_the_economy_stupid's picture

you confuse starvation w malnutrition. There is protein malnutrtion...sure. BUtn there are many malnutrtions, and they appear as disease entities such as cardiovasular disease, cervical and prostate cancers, central nurerology diseases, blood cell manufacturing diseases. I am not going to write the book here, but, in short, YDKWYTA.

tmosley's picture

Almost everyone in the world is potassium deficient.

You'd be surprised at how many things the average person is deficient in.  That's why I started taking homemade soylent ( every day.  Complete control of my nutrition.  Loosing weight now too.

I should probably shut up and stop giving them additional stupid ideas.  They have plent of their own already.

I think we need to redefine the word hungry. Are all the American fat asses running around hungry? Yes, 24/7.

But that is not my idea of hungry.

newdoobie's picture

How the hell did you get junked for that statement? Trolls out today.

Dewey Cheatum Howe's picture

Nutritionly poor, high caloric food will do that, it is like US dollars. Purchasing power (nutritionily poor) poor, high face (caloric) money USD. It is the same shit and produces the same effects. It is manufactured theft whether you do it with processed food or through inflation with money. Same end results, fat and bloated systems tapped out starving a slow death as the gap widens between the 2. They are trying to kill us on all levels instead of bring things into balance.

You eat nutritionly rich food you need less calories relative to your needs same with money it has more purchasing power you need less of it relative to needs.

The problem is ingrained into the most basic and core things in society and any solutions not addressing this is just more of the same. And people will ridicule people like myself over things crypto-currencies like bitcoin that are trying to break this relationship and bring things back in line.

Bullshit data, bullshit conclusions. It's all based on welfare recipients - who doesn't like the occasional free lunch?

Treeplanter's picture

Gov't lies.  We have the fattest poor people in history.  21 %?  Maybe .1% can't find the county welfare office.

masterinchancery's picture

Fattest people in the world, no food, total BS.

Totentänzerlied's picture

All obesity-related conditions and complications are symptoms of malnutrition, as obesity is indeed a form of chronic malnutrition.

Also, if they're not counting people on foodstamp programs of every kind, private charity and public welfare, state, local, and federal, then the counts are absolutely meaningless. I think it would also be fair to claim that many people on welfare, foodstamps or no foodstamps, are technically unable to afford food no less than a panhandler with a coin cup - in the absense of some form of charity (whether it be private and unorganized or public and institutionalized), they'd both be starving.

fonzannoon's picture

"I have a buddy in silicon valley who promised me that within 10yrs I will be able to plug my phone into a fat guy to charge while I am grabbing a cup of coffee and commenting on here while at the coffee shop.

We used to do that with a potato, cheap quartz clock, and hand cut electrodes back in the day. It could work. Your next charger may be a taser-like device that fires 2 small harpoons into your chosen electrolyte source. Hit the wrong fat roll and it could get hairy though.

NoDebt's picture

Stop it, stop it.  I've got tears running down my face I'm laughing so hard.  A big fat human potato battery with Taser leads stuck in it.... its too much.  Please stop, I'm going to pee myself.

the Wall E clip link was new to me and I never want to see it again. The less I interact with cities and high tech the better for me - this morning I fed local wild kangaroos some banana's, walked on the beach, then checked on the lap top how cyclone Ita is tracking (too close!); natural and real.
