Where's Ukraine?

Tyler Durden's picture

Only one out of six Americans could correctly locate Ukraine on a map of the world, but perhaps even more disconcerting, as The Washington Post reports, the farther their guesses were from Ukraine's actual location, the more they wanted the US to intervene with military force...

As The Washington Post reports,

Accuracy varies across demographic groups. In general, younger Americans tended to provide more accurate responses than their older counterparts: 27 percent of 18-24 year olds correctly identified Ukraine, compared with 14 percent of 65+ year-olds. Men tended to do better than women, with 20 percent of men correctly identifying Ukraine and 13 percent  of women.

Interestingly, members of military households were no more likely to correctly locate Ukraine (16.1 percent  correct) than members of non-military households (16 percent  correct), but self-identified independents (29 percent  correct) outperformed both Democrats (14 percent  correct) and Republicans (15 percent  correct).  Unsurprisingly, college graduates (21 percent  correct) were more likely to know where Ukraine was than non-college graduates (13 percent  correct), but even 77 percent  of college graduates failed to correctly place Ukraine on a map.

The proportion of college grads who could correctly identify Ukraine is only slightly higher than the proportion of Americans who told Pew that President Obama was Muslim in August 2010.

...

The further our respondents thought that Ukraine was from its actual location, the more they wanted the U.S. to intervene militarily.

Even controlling for a series of demographic characteristics and participants’ general foreign policy attitudes, we found that the less accurate our participants were, the more they wanted the U.S. to use force, the greater the threat they saw Russia as posing to U.S. interests, and the more they thought that using force would advance U.S. national security interests; all of these effects are statistically significant at a 95 percent  confidence level.

The results are clear, but also somewhat disconcerting:

The less people know about where Ukraine is located on a map, the more they want the U.S. to intervene militarily.

Still unclear.. here's a 2-minute explainer...

HR, personally, I've just been one lucky SOB. One amazing ass-kicking woman after the other.

I was once married to a red-headed VW Bus driving Portland Amazon hippie at Vegas, in a Chapel, with a cowboy preacher, and it being the $120 dollar (as opposed to the $300) package, we got a rusbucket 1977 Ford stretch limo with dusty crystal and no champagne.

So, yup....

I know my women's history from having penetrated it deeply. ;-)

The concern should not be that they could not accurately locate the Ukraine, or were widely off the mark, but that people of such limited knowledge were willing to hold and make substantive comments regarding war somewhere which their lack of geographical knowledge indicates they clearly know nothing about.

"A nightmare that one can't wake up from" IS a definition of Insanity!

Welcome to the "real world," folks. It is actually worse than your nightmares, because you can not wake up enough to get out. Rather the more you learn about that "real world," the worse those nightmare insanities become, since the less able you become to still believe that it is possible to ever "wake up" enough other people, along with yourself, to stop that runaway social insanity nightmare from automatically getting worse, faster ...

Our actual politics is based on the perceptions of people whose ability to understand anything that matters continues to be demonstrated to be so abysmally absurd that there is no reasonable hope we could ever "wake up" from that reality of moronic monkeys with weapons of mass destruction.

It does appear that "God" has a macabre sense of humour! In that context, Zero Hedge readers appear to belong to an esoteric cult that believes that somehow facts should matter. That is so ironic, because it is clear that one of the central social facts is that social facts do NOT matter much, since what the majority of society knows has almost nothing to do with facts. Rather, ignorance and absurd beliefs are the dominate features that direct political events, whereby those who are the best at lying tend to end up controlling civilization. Of course, since lies work by being backed up by violence, the more ignorant people are, the more they approve of using violence to back up their beliefs. After all, the foundation of the whole system has become successfully backing up frauds with force. Within that system, the vast majority of people have adapted to that fact by ignoring facts.

The ruling classes have deliberately made and maintained a social system which depends upon the majority of people being morons, and that goal has been persistently pursued with scientific methods, to the degree which exists today, of a "nuclear armed military super power" which can count on the vast majority of its people not understanding geopolitical events, because they do no want to understand.

After looking at enough of these sorts of real social facts, about the abysmally absurd levels of ignorance throughout the current population, the only way to "fight" insanity appears to be with insanity, since one has to indulge in one's own kinds of irrational hopes in order to have any hope at all. That is what I do, in order to cope with the apparently most objective and factual conclusions, that our civilization is collectively manifesting runaway criminal insanities, because our reality IS a worsening nightmare that we can not wake up from!
