Europe Folds As Putin Tells It To Pay Ukraine's Gazprom Bill, Or Else

Tyler Durden's picture

Another day ending in "y" means another day in which Putin plays the G(roup of most insolvent countries)-7 like a fiddle.

The latest: Europe should provide aid to Ukraine to ensure uninterrupted natural-gas deliveries to the region, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman said as reported by Bloomberg.

"Russia is the only country helping Ukraine’s economy with energy supplies that are not paid for,"  Dmitry Peskov told reporters today in Moscow,  commenting on President Vladimir Putin’s letter yesterday to 18 European heads of state. “The letter is a call to immediately review this situation, which is absurd on the one hand and critical on the other.

Said otherwise: PUTIN SAYS EUROPE GAS TRANSIT DEPENDS ON UKRAINE: IFX

Or, as we explained yesterday, Russia is quite happy to keep the EU gas flowing... as long as Ukraine has enough gas in storage to assure Gazprom it won't syphon off gas destined for Europe. So how much gas does Ukraine need to pre-stock? About $4-5 billion worth. The problem is that Ukraine doesn't have a dime to spend on gas.

So putting the question aside if Ukraine will or won't import even one bcf of Russian gas ever again (thanks to some fracking or US natgas exporting magic), what Putin just said is that if Europe wants an uninterrupted supply of gas it better find a way to fund Ukraine to the tune of up to $5 billion, or else the gas may just get shut off.

And guess what: Putin is about to win yet again:

European Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger is working on a plan to help Ukraine pay some of its gas bills to Russia, he told Austria's ORF radio on Friday, saying there was "no reason to panic" about Russian gas supplies to Europe.

"We are in close contact with Ukraine and its gas company to ensure that Ukraine remains able to pay and the debts that the gas company has to Gazprom do not rise further," he said, adding he would meet Ukraine's energy and foreign ministers on Monday.

"I am preparing a solution that is part of the aid package that the IMF, the European Union and the World Bank is giving to Ukraine and from which payment for open bills will be possible."

The chass game continues: Putin X+1 - Pidgeons 0

Nothing lasts forever.  Without the ability to perpetually grow it all stops, and this incliudes Putin's Russia.  ALL empires collapse, and it doesn't matter what ideologiy it espouses.  In the end it's a match-up with Mother Nature: guess who wins.

The Federal Reserve website referenced quantitative easing conducted by the Bank of England many many moons ago, and said there was a rumor that France lent them gold which was how the BOE was able to aggressively lend to businesses for any type of collateral back in the day without the imbalance between the pound and the petrodollar.
It only worked because like Reaganomics, money was used by value producing companies. Not the state like it is now.

Fast forward--- not exactly the same thing. But since Nixon took the US off of the gold standard --- the LEVERAGE aka. GOLD has to come from somewhere!

Look at how good Germany has it!

"When, at the beginning of 2013, Germany asked for the repatriation of just 300 tonnes of its holdings of 3,396 tonnes, the Fed asked for a five-year delayed delivery. By year's end, the Fed had sent Germany only 5 tonnes.

Although privately owned, partly by bankers, the Fed is audited only partially. Could it be that a large portion of the Fed's published gold holdings of 8,133.5 tonnes is now actually the property of other nations, like Germany?"

************

Which pushes the price of gold up vs. the USD, which many of the world's currencies are tied to!

****So Germany is making BANK from the U.S. on it's investment with gold.***

Unlike China's purchase of US Treasuries (unless that was paid in gold as well!) Germany is doing probably better than China on investments just because gold prices rises against the USD during inflation.

Guess who came from Germany?

The men who started Goldman Sachs.

This gold/leverage business is probably being written off the balance sheet by further exchanges between the US and Germany to get the "bad debt" off of the financial statements like the subprime dealers did with Repo105. It's confusing. In short, METAPHORICALLY they just literally tied everything up into this nasty knot by piling everything up in to an even bigger knot which requires more string...which will soon run out.

I prefer to descrive what's happening metaphorically as the Indian Rope trick.

"A ton of gold is worth $42.2 million at Wednesday’s price of $1312 per ounce. New York’s delivered shipment alone of 37 tons is valued at about 11.9 billion euros ($16.5 billion), on the central bank’s accounting.

India and Sweden are two countries that HAVE PLEDGED GOLD ABROAD AS COLLATERAL FOR URGENT GOVERNMENT LOANS", added Milling-Stanley. He underscored the importance of keeping some gold abroad for liquidity reasons."

WHICH GOVERNMENT LOANS? See how this can be confusing?

"About eight standard U.S. 18-wheeler trucks would be required to carry 300 metric tons of gold, the amount of gold Germany is claiming back from the Fed, estimated Anthem Blanchard, CEO of precious metals seller Anthem Vault."

So when strapped with Interest rate swaps with Government Sachs, was gold used as collateral?   I honestly do not know.
In disagreement to what the market "experts" say, Russia's economy isn't exactly hurting. Neither is China's economy.
I'm not rooting for either, but they're in a favorable position.

First, like previously mentioned- Russia's economy was looking healthy.

Next, China has always exaggerated their problems to keep their interest rates low.  Kind of in the same way Japan does.  In the same way China copies Japan in buying raw goods from Austrlia instead of the U.S.  (thanks Bush!)   Kind of how both of them don't really play on the U.S. financial sector  yet finance the US Treasury.

The protests in the Ukraine were fixed.

The IMF actually pushed up the price of natural gas in Ukraine to 50% on some deal- something happened and they owe Russia like $2 billion? Why would they protest against their nat gas debtor?

Also heard, nat gas has other routes to the rest of Europe which causes me to believe that somebody is pushing for this China/Russia deal to not happen.

I strongly believe that some American oil companies that import from OPEC don't want this China/Russia deal to go through because well, it might increase supply which reduces the cost of oil in USD?

OPEC currencies didn't drop with the value of the USD which is horribly messed up with quantitative easing, which puts the U.S. in a very unfavorable position from importing during massive trade deficits instead of consuming supply side domestically drilled energy.

So is China somewhat of a threat to the U.S.?
In some regards, YES.

BUT.

China has to look out for it's own interests.

***CHINA HAS TO MAKE ENERGY AVAILABLE TO 1.4 BILLION CITIZENS.***

Back in 2003, CNOOC (China stats sponsord energy company) offered a very nice bid for Unical. Chevron? didn't want to compete with that bid and figured out that it was cheaper to buy off Bush and Congress to block that trade as a "national security concern".

And yes I'm blaming this on China too. Had they loaned more money to the US private sector business backed assets instead of giving the US government a monopoly of power with unlimited free loans to the U.S. Treasury- the government would have a lot less weight against anybody!

So why do Americans get upset when China gets kind of stuck buying oil from Iran? Russia?

Wait, that might put bearish pressure on oil speculators violating Sharia Law. :)

You know what else would be nice? For the U.S. to stop blocking supply side domestically drilled oil for consumption.
And ending quantitative easing to reduce the free/cheap margins that these speculators use to push up the price of oil during stagflation.
Apparently Germany lent the US gold for purposes, such as quantitative easing! Um, besides free loans from China to the U.S. treasury, how else is the Federal Reserve going to "fix" stagflation with inflation?

NOW LET ME BE CLEAR.

I AM IN FAVOR OF SUPPLY SIDE DOMESTICALLY DRILLED OIL FOR U.S. CONSUMPTION.   Especially since OPEC hasn't dropped the values of their currency when the U.S. did.

All that you've said and it comes down to advocating for nationalizing oil?

One of the Forbes clan members said back in the 70s that the US should seek to use up the rest of the world's oil first.  Ignoring that one of the world's premier capitalists was advocating a nationalization of US domestic oil, it really was/is a good strategy, only, problem is, what happens when your own oil supply runs out?

Drill baby drill only gets us to the day of reckoning sooner.  One day we will all be Ukrainians...

Dear Abby

US Nat Gas consumption 2013 is 26.034 Bcf, but we produce 24,280 Bcf. So how is it we have any to spare to send to Europe?

http://www.eia.gov/totalenergy/data/monthly/pdf/sec4_3.pdf

Here's another thing. OIL

US average production is down 9% from 2005 to 2013.

Q. With all the fracking shouldn't US Production be going up?

Looks to me fracking is just helping slow the depletion and not adding.

Conclusion, the lack of consumption is what is contributing to the impression were closer to self sustainability.

Lack of consumption sounds like a bad thing...  Anyway, yes, reduced consumption IS happening.  Number of vehicle miles driven is falling rapidly.  No surprise when more and more people are getting pink slips.

The unconventional plays will NOT be able to plug the holes from the declines in conventional plays.  Therefore, the ONLY way forward WILL be "reduced consumption."  And at some point reduced volume will place a lot of pressure on margins- rock and hard place...

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

After Nixon the arrogant fuckers thought that nothing mattered, they could do whatever they wanted without concern, after all America was big and powerful...you know like Rome, Spain, England were at one time....

They became so absolutely arrogant that they could see no flaw in themselves, could do anything they wanted without recourse or concern.

Well now the pipers want be paid.....and many pounds of flesh must be taken.

We're all pretty much locked into this impossible path that is "perpetual growth on a finite planet."

All empires collapse.

The US has going for it that it has only a couple of bordering countries (mostly friendly) and a fairly extensice array of natural resources (use and consumption rates will, of course, have to adjust).

Europe needs to nut up and play their shipping route card. Russia can shut off europe's gas, but Europe can shut off Russia's winter food supply. Give the Russian's a taste of their own medicine and recreate the holodomor targeted at the bastards that killed 10mil Ukrainians.

This is a game that hurts Europe more, escalation is fine by Russia....a few explosions in Saudi Arabia oil wells, Bahrain, Qata....you know the blood that flows through Europe and US veins.

One thing they do not want to do is 'escalate' as Russia has shown it Will act in harsh ways.

Harsh?  As in expecting to be paid for goods provided?  Harsh is the US bombing wedding parties.

Parasite of EU nations continue to borrow money to sustain the current living conditions. They cannot grow to develop a new community. Why? Debt load has fostered growth in terms being able to create new infrastructure.  In muppet terms, no one has any more cash to elevate new income tax hikes to build bridges or other greenie bullshit programs. Keep debasing the USD. You’ll find yourself dodging bullets. Word of the wise.

Seems to me the complete trade agreement of Gazprom and other goods and services from Russia to Europe is not totally being addressed in this article. Russians have a hard time of just feeding their people. Europe wants their resources--as cheaply as possible. Perhaps this is just how they negotiate.

Or else!

Whereas Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution states that the president of the United States shall take care that the laws [of our land] be faithfully executed

Whereas Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution provides the oath of office for incoming presidents to take, namely that I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Whereas Barack Obama, putative president of the United States, has arguably and willfully failed to execute his office by, among other items:

Refusing to obey a court order to halt the enforcement of Obamacare
Refusing to obey a court order to allow oil drilling to resume on the Gulf Coast
Refusing to obey a court order to cease enforcement of Net Neutrality
Refusing to secure America's borders, refusing to enforce Americas immigration laws and suing the state of Arizona for enacting legislation that allows law enforcement officers to perform tasks that should be taken by officers sanctioned by the federal government
Publicly stating his refusal to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a duly enacted law passed by Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton

Whereas Article II, Section 4 states that The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

Whereas the lawsuit against Arizona is tantamount to treason since it is the job of the federal government to protect its borders and citizenry from criminal and subversive elements that pose threats to the American people and Barack Obama has willfully and knowingly failed to do so

Whereas Barack Obama has steadfastly and consistently advocated, both in his own executive capacity and thru requests to Congress, measures to grant citizenship to illegal aliens currently residing in the United States, also tantamount to treason

Whereas evidence is strong and compelling that drug cartels, drug traffickers, human smugglers and terrorists have crossed our borders into the continental United States and continue to do so daily with grossly inadequate law enforcement resources to thwart their actions

Whereas Barack Obama has long sought for the release of detained terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay and to be assigned to the prison populations in Americas prisons, literally putting American lives in jeopardy

Whereas Barack Obama has long sought for trials of these detained terrorists to be held in Americas court system, literally putting American lives in jeopardy, rather than in military tribunals as permitted under the rules of the Geneva Convention

Whereas the actions of Barack Obama with reference to the above detained terrorists are tantamount to treason because it puts the welfare of terrorists above that of the American people for whom presidential care and defense is faithfully entrusted

Whereas the recent repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell is arguably treasonous since it forces our men and women in uniform to publicly tolerate and even commit homosexual acts, acts which potentially put them in grave danger since displays of such behavior are frequently met with maiming and death in Middle Eastern nations

Whereas Barack Obamas public refusal to enforce DOMA and immigration laws arguably constitute at minimum a misdemeanor and at maximum a high crime since such demonstrates an intentional abrogation of presidential duties

Whereas Barack Obama, by failure to produce clear and convincing proof (such as a birth certificate, school records, medical records, etc.) that he is a natural born citizen under Article II, Section 1 and thus qualified to be president of the United States, has created mass confusion and chaos for the American people whose care he has been entrusted

Whereas U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has, in the face of massive evidence of voter intimidation at a Philadelphia area polling place in the November 2008 election, willfully chosen not to prosecute the Black Panthers responsible for the egregious civil rights violations committed

Whereas Attorney General Holder, chief law enforcement officer of the United States, has selectively failed to enforce many of the laws on the nations book, most recently having publicly stated that he will not defend the duly enacted Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)

And whereas Barack Obama and Eric Holder, both by their actions and inactions, have created civil unrest across America, the likes of which is unprecedented in modern time and arguably in the countrys 234+ years

We the People of the United States of America call on Congressman Lamar Smith, House Judiciary Chairman, and the entire Judiciary Committee to expeditiously file impeachment charges against Barack Obama, putative President of the United States, and Eric Holder, U.S. Attorney General.

We the People also call on the other 240 Republican members of the U.S. House to publicly support the impeachment of Barack Obama and Eric Holder and to vote favorably on the charges to prayerfully be filed by Rep. Smith and the Judiciary Committee.

As if throwing out one corrupt (bought and paid for) politician and replacing them with another will change anything.  A mere distraction for the uninitiated from the real problem -- a private international banking system that demands obedience from all nations to a system of debt slavery, created literally out of thin air, and who have a history of using any and all means (including their enormous financial resources and leverage) to achieve their hideous, murderous and self-serving goals of one giant worldwide ATM that pours money into their pockets.
