One Killed, Many Wounded After Shooting Breaks Out Between Ukraine Special Forces And Pro-Russia Separatists

Tyler Durden's picture

"Ball is in Kiev's court." That is how we concluded our article yesterday reporting that Moscow won't accept force against demonstrators after Kiev warned it would use special forces to quell ongoing "terrorist" uprisings across cities in east Ukraine.

Predictably, Ukraine couldn't wait to shoot the ball right back at Russia and re-escalate (in hope that the west will finally stand up and side along the acting government in what continues to be a very foolish gambit) and early this morning local time, units of the Ukraine special forces started an anti-terrorist operation in eastern town of Slavyansk, where police station was seized yesterday by separatist protesters, as reported by the Interior Minister Arsen Avakov posts on Facebook, who also warned local residents to stay inside, saying separatist protesters have opened fire in direction of approaching special police units.

Moments later the operation turned deadly after at least one member of the special forces was killed and as many as 9 wounded, as well as an unknown number of casualties on the "separatist" side. But most importantly, Russia now has a pretext to step in and "defend" its ethnic population just as it warned it would do.

WSJ reports:

A Ukrainian special forces officer was killed and five others wounded Sunday in a gunbattle with heavily armed pro-Russian forces who had commandeered a police station in the eastern city of Slavyansk, Ukraine's top police official said.

The firefight erupted early Sunday as Ukrainian forces moved to clear the building where approximately 20 men dressed in camouflage had seized control the day before. Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said an unspecified number of the pro-Russian activists had been wounded in the exchange.

This wasn't the only casualty as other firefights broke out in close proximity to the first one.

In addition to the dead and wounded at the police station, Russia's Interfax news agency reported one person was killed and four others wounded in a gunfight at a checkpoint along the road leading from Slavyansk to the regional capital of Donetsk. The Slavyansk operation, dubbed an "antiterrorist action," involved Ukraine's state security service and military and police units from across the country, Mr. Avakov said. "May God be with them," Mr. Avakov wrote on his Facebook page early Sunday, announcing the operation had begun.

A short time later, he said that the men holed up inside the building had begun firing at the Ukrainian forces and urged residents in the center of the eastern Ukrainian city to remain indoors and away from their windows.

Residents reported seeing armored personnel carriers approaching the city and helicopters flying overhead. Russian television station Rossiya 24 reported that tires that had been used as a barricade in front of the building had been set on fire and black smoke could be seen above the city center.

The clash comes after pro-Russia protests spread Saturday in eastern Ukraine, with armed men, some in unmarked, military-style uniforms, moved to commandeer more government buildings.

So now that Ukraine has had its official warning by Lavrov, which it openly ignored, and commenced a crack down on the separatist forces, who may well have been camouflaged Russian army units just like in the Crimea scenario, Kremlin now sees itself fully in its right to cross the border and "defend" people in the east. To be sure, NATO and the west will hardly share Russia's interpretation of events which only means that the situation will further escalate some more.

And if not in Slavyansk, there are more than enough other cities that allow both sides to escalate into lethal gunfights. Reuters reports:

Separatist protesters on Sunday seized control of the mayor's office in the town of Mariupol, eastern Ukraine, on the Azov Sea, local media said.

The protesters entered the building following a rally involving about 1,000 people demonstrating in favor of the creation of a separate republic in eastern Ukraine, a local journalist for the newspaper Priazovsky Worker said.

Police did not try to stop them. They entered the offices, took down the Ukrainian flag and were erecting barricades outside the building, the journalist said.

A photo from Mariupol:

As we said earlier, if this is merely a gambit by Kiev to provoke western nations into action, it will likely fail. Poland PM Tusk explained why earlier when speaking on Polish radio Zet on events in the Ukraine, when he said that he’s “concerned” there is “relatively little will” in EU, other countries to “strongly support Ukraine. Nobody accepts Crimea annexation, but nobody wants to head for sharp conflict. Which also means Poland itself is isolated in a potential expansion next: Tusk said it’s important Russia doesn’t threaten Poland’s security "we need to know how to mobilize international community." Hopefully it will have more success than Ukraine.

Sure enough, the best the west can mobilize was and continues to be nothing more than harsh language.

Something Putin knows too well and continues to capitalize on.

There are large numbers of Russian speaking Ukrainian nationals in the Russian army, so all this infiltration process would need is to allow "deserters" to return home with their arms. Russia will have plausible deniability here assuming anyone in the West cares about facts. The paramount fact is that the West wants to ensnare the Russian speaking areas of Ukraine in the web of oppressive debt by which it intends to smother the entire earth.

15:43 GMT: Ukraine’s Security Council has approved a full-scale security operation in the country’s eastern regions following the crackdown in Slavyansk, coup-imposed President Aleksandr Turchinov said. Military forces will take part in the operation, he added.

At the same time, the new authorities in Kiev are ready to consider granting more autonomy to the regions, Turchinov said. He gave pro-independence supporters in eastern Ukraine until Monday morning to leave the government buildings they have occupied.

Interesting. In Bush Jr. time, they also have the concret number of US troops casualty in Iraq, but not the victims casualties. Could this mean that life on their side is dear, and the life of other people not?

The west is at a tipping point. Confronted by a maniacal bad actor, Russia, the Western Democracies see a peaceful country in their midst about to fall to the "Little Napoleon" in Moscow.

And there actions are that of a "Deer caught in the Headlights".

If no action is taken in defense of Ukrainian territorial integrity and sovereignty by Great Britain and the USA, the key signatories with Russia of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, then expect no contracts of agreements from the past to be honored.

Is this a danger to YOU...sitting on your couch in front of your computer?  Yes.  It is deadly serious and you are at risk.

Whether half or more of you are in Russia or are Russian nationals abroad or whether you are a libertarian in Texas who lives to thumb his nose at "International Agreements" based on "Principle" (what a laughable joke!), then expect that the aggression by Russia will either be quelled quietly by a REAL threat of force by the USA and Europe or then expect this conflict to escalate to all out War.

Russia has crossed the Rubicon.  A buffer state and ally is under assault.  But Russia has not, at this point, burned all the bridges for a graceful retreat.  We either stop Russia -now- or it is WWIII...whether we want this or not.

You Russian bloggers are having trouble keeping your story straight.

Yesterday it was Ukrainian Nazi's this and American Nazi's that.  Now it is Ukrainian Jews this and American Jews that.  For the sake of the integrity of all professional propagandists, can you please keep the narrative consistent?

Is that too much to ask?

I've been called a Fascist Nazi IMF agent Working for the IDF by better folks than you.

My dog!, Common Dreams actually banned me for being on the "Wrong Side" of this issue.  Their policy to the advancement of the "Progressive Agenda" seems to have overlooked protecting dissent...and they even deleted all my comments ever posted on their website.  I was the lone voice supporting the Ukrainian people and they deleted me.  (That is the cyber equivalent of Book Burning IMHO).

If Ukraine was a NATO country then you would be correct.  For whatever reasons over the last 20 years (Russia involvement?, distrust of the West?) the Ukraine country has not gone to the West for help.  For example, who has been lending to Ukraine...the West and IMF ?  No.   Ukraine always wanted to be more beholden to the East and Russia for help.  This happened this way for 20 years for a reason and it is too late for the West to now do anything to stop it.

Maybe next time.

Please look at the history of WWI, and why Russia wanted complete control of the Black Sea and ownership of the Bosporus and Turkey.

That was 100 years ago...and since then has driven politics in the region.  It has really been over 100 year war for control.

1st, you are mistaken in your thinking that only NATO alliances and treaties exist and are to be honored.  It is so obviously wrong...are you serious?

Recall that in WWI the British were impelled to send their entire land army of 70k men into battle after Belgium was invaded.

Littleand "irrelevant" Belgium compelled the most experienced military in the world, Britain's Expeditionary Forces, to confront the largest and most advanced military in the world, the German military.

And if no action is taken to defend this sovereign people, expect "Next Time" to follow quickly on the fall of Ukraine.

Political response is all.  Military response is not indicated.

It would be shocking if there were a military response from the West, given the recent 20 year history of Ukraine.

All the Ukraine weapons were removed in 1994 and 2005 for a reason supported by the West...no wars allowed.

As you agree this region has been in flux a long time with many involved.

You have said exactly nothing.  There is no argument presented.

Try again to state a argument but with reference to the Budapest Memoranda.  If you say that the agreement is no longer valid then give an argument as to "Why?".

Ukraine is vulnerable to Russia directly as a result of the Budapest agreement...how can the USA and GB not honor this agreement in light of that?  CRAZY!

The rest of the Ukies will undoubtedly turn on each other en masse when they realise that there's not going to be much in the way of home heating come December this year. Surely they aren't still trying to hide information (/sarcasm/off)?

I reckon it is all a big cover up and the Chinese accidentally shot it down and shipped all the bits to the southern Indian Ocean (hence the long delay before 'debris' etc. was seen and black box signals heard). That's why all those Chinese ships and planes are down there now, 'discovering' stuff.

Demonizing Russia over Ukraine from the American Empire rulers is not working, so a new tactic is needed. It’s the anniversary of the Boston Bombing... so why not blame that on Russia?

New Cover-up in Boston Bombing Saga – Blaming Moscow by Russ Baker, WhoWhatWhy  -  April 12, 2014

Maybe you heard: the Russians are responsible for the Boston Marathon Bombing. At least indirectly.

That’s what the New York Times says. Had the Russians told the Americans everything they knew about Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the bombing might have been averted by the FBI. The Times knows this because it was told so by an anonymous “senior American official” who got an advance look at a report from the “intelligence community.”

***

Anyone who still entertains the fantasy that America is a vigorous, healthy democracy with an honest and reliable security apparatus and an honest, competent, vigilant media need only consider this major news leak just published as a New York Times exclusive. It pretty much sums up the fundamental corruption of our institutions, the lack of accountability, and the deep-dyed complicity of the “finest” brand in American journalism.

Just days before the first anniversary of the Boston bombing on April 15, some unnamed “senior American official” puts the blame for the bombing squarely on…Vladimir Putin.

It takes a keen understanding of certain members of the American media to know they will promote, without question, the latest “intelligence community” version of events. Which is that responsibility for the second largest “terror attack” after 9/11 should be pinned on the Russians, currently America’s bête noir over Ukraine.

Consider the cynical manipulation of public opinion involved hereThe government permits, presumably authorizes, a high official—the Attorney General or someone of that status, perhaps even the Vice President—to leak confidential information for no apparent purpose beyond seeking to put a damper on legitimate inquiries into the behavior of the American government at the most fundamental level.

And the world’s vaunted “newspaper of record”—its brand largely based on insider access and the willingness of powerful figures to give it “hot stuff” in return for controlling public perceptions— shamelessly runs this leak with no attempt to question its timing or provenance.

Let’s look at what this article actually says. Here’s the opening paragraph …

wondering who gave the go ahead for this to Kiev?

we may have an answer-

"Russian news agencies reported Sunday that U.S. CIA director John Brennan had a secret meeting with Ukrainian officials in Kiev before they began operations against separatist forces that had taken over buildings in the country's east."

this was posted on the Moscow times, for some reason I could not copy the link but the full story is available.

here is a bit more from the post.

"Brennan landed in Ukraine on Saturday under an assumed name and held a "series of secret meetings" with the country's "power bloc" Interfax reported, citing an unidentified official in the Ukrainian parliament. The unidentified official said that there were "unconfirmed reports" that the U.S. security official was behind the decision to use force in eastern Ukraine after pro-Russian separatist forces took control of the city of Slovyansk.

Ukrainian parliament Communist Party deputy Vladimir Golub told RIA Novosti that lawmakers were talking about the visit openly and opined that the Ukrainian Security Service had become a unit of the CIA."

and the Russian response.

"Commenting on the report, deputy chairman for the State Duma's Defense Committee Frants Klintsevich said that he would view such a visit as a challenge to Russia.'

now the Moscow times has been surprisingly neutral throughout these events and has posted many of the same western spin stories we see in our media here, they have not gone with the same hard core pro Russian coverage that RT has engaged in. in any event this, if true, (which I am inclined to believe it is) is certainly not a surprise, in fact, it only makes sense that Kiev would have received outside encouragement to take these actions.

it does unfortunately point to yet another serious escalation of the situation by Washington as Kiev would probably not have taken this route without promises of direct support given their lack of ability and resources to take on Moscow on their own.

The secret clandestine meetings in Europe by U.S. intelligence reminds one of the suspicions regarding Allen Dulles in ties to German leaders during WWII, working for OSS.  Dulles was first director of the CIA and co-founder of the CFR with his brother John Foster Dulles, Eisenhower’s Secretary of State.

The establishment story was that Dulles was gathering secrets concerning Hitler but later many accused him of creating a financial network among Nazi corporations, American oil, and Saudi Arabia.

He also was suspected of successfully directing the smuggling of Nazi money back to his western clients, carefully evading Allied surveillance. As well, Dulles was suspected as a key to the financing for Hitler’s Germany.

Dulles helped a number of German Jews, such as the banker Paul Kemper, gain entry into the United States from Nazi Germany.

And to top off a highly controverial career (coups in Iran and Guatemala, Bay of Pigs, sabatoge against Cuba, etc.), Allen Dulles was part of the Warren Commission investigating the assassination of Kennedy.

"N"victim... or is it "J"victim?...

Reverse propaganda and more importantly "Truth" from the President and Nation that wants to throw you bums out and the bitter legacy and lies you've told and keep telling the World about this Country and yourselves.

Enjoy!
