Russian Fighter Jet Flies Repeatedly Within 1000 Yards Of US Warship In The Black Sea

Tyler Durden's picture

As we reported last Friday, a second US warship, the destroyer Donald Cook, crossed the Bosphorus last week and entered the Black Sea at precisely the time when NATO was arguing that its encroaching presence around Russia should not spook anyone. Apparently it spooked someone, namely Russia, which over the weekend decided to give the Americans a warm welcome. As AP reports, "A U.S. military official says a Russian fighter jet made multiple, close-range passes near an American warship in the Black Sea for more than 90 minutes Saturday amid escalating tensions in the region."

From AP:

The official says the fighter flew within 1,000 yards of the USS Donald Cook, a Navy destroyer, at about 500 feet above sea level, saying this prompted ship commanders to issue several radio warnings. The fighter appeared to be unarmed and the passes ended without incident.

In the first public account of the incident, the official said the Russian Fencer flew within 1,000 yards of the USS Donald Cook, a Navy destroyer, at about 500 feet above sea level. Ship commanders considered the actions provocative and inconsistent with international agreements, prompting the ship to issue several radio queries and warnings.

The fighter appeared to be unarmed and never was in danger of coming in contact with the ship, said the official, who was not authorized to talk publicly by name about the encounter so spoke on condition of anonymity. The passes, which occurred in the early evening there, ended without incident.

The official also said that a Russian Navy ship, a frigate, has been shadowing the U.S. warship, remaining within visual distance but not close enough to be unsafe.

The USS Donald Cook has been conducting routine operations in international waters east of Romania. The ship, which carries helicopters, was deployed to the Black Sea on April 10, in the wake of the Russian military takeover of Ukraine's Crimea region and ongoing unrest there.

It is unclear if Russia was simply marking what is clearly considers its own expanded territorial waters, or if the Su-24 pilots were just being friendly.

Curious where the ship is now? It is currently at anchor in the Romanian port of Constanca where it welcomed the country's president Basescu:

The forward deployed guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) welcomed aboard Romanian President Traian B?sescu while the ship was in port in Constanta, April 14.

140414-N-KE519-048.jpg

President B?sescu was met by members of the U.S. Embassy and Donald Cook’s commanding officer Cmdr. Scott Jones. He was then given a tour of the ship, including the Navigation Bridge, Combat Information Center and Engineering Control.

140414-N-KE519-054.jpg

Donald Cook, the first of four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers to be forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, is serving on a scheduled patrol in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations as part of the President's European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA) to ballistic missile defense in Europe.

FW:

U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts a full range of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation missions in concert with coalition, joint, interagency, and other parties in order to advance security and stability in Europe and Africa.

And to confirm that military overflights are hardly an isolated event around the Ukraine, moments ago photos were taken of a military helicopter flying over downtown Donestk in the east Ukraine, which as is widely known, is largely in the hands of "pro Russian separatists."

The video of those "BLM Agents" using dogs and tasers... don't see one of them wearing a badge.  They all have BLM law enforcement uni's on w/ duty/tac' belts - but one very important piece of their uniform is missing - that badge that says they are truly a law enforcement officer.  I'm guessing those guys in the vid' are just hired thugs - they got the cows, that's all they needed to do, that's why they backed down and left - they really had no other mission and couldn't actually arrest anyone.

Same as it's ever been...  And "victory" will be what?

Do people demand a really just system? Well, we'll arrange it so that they'll be satisfied with one that's a little less unjust ... They want a revolution, and we'll give them reforms -- lots of reforms; we'll drown them in reforms. Or rather, we'll drown them in promises of reforms, because we'll never give them real ones either!!

You touch on the most important aspect.  Buzzing the ship was more than an audacious gesture of contempt.  THE PILOT DID IT BECAUSE HE KNEW HE COULD. AMERICAN FORCES ARE TRAPPED.  Jingoistic warhawks cannot understand the calculus of the present situation, because it goes against their hammer-and-nail programming.  They're probably still wondering how Putin anticipates their moves.

"They're probably still wondering how Putin anticipates their moves. "

I'm not thinking that there's a lot of calculating here so much as it's just a big show.  Russia pretty much has all the cards.  The US only has its military, backed by massive debt.  When you're able to operate out of your own backyard it's a bit easier... (supply lines)

You nailed it. This is more than a resource war; it's a crisis of values and ethos. Peak debt is slamming against Newton's Third Law. We're not going to see a big expensive military debacle, because the war machine is powered by debt, and every entanglement accelerates the process of repudiation, and what's the point of fighting if you have nothing virtuous left to fight for? Threats of military action are hollow -- just bankster mouthpieces barking. They know their power is about to be taken away for the good of all. The secret weapon is SOLVENCY.  CAN YOU PAY YOUR BILLS?

IS IT PROVES THE VERY INTENT AND WORTH OF THE SECOND AMENDMENT AS WRITTEN TO THIS DAY!

Mon, 04/14/2014 - 13:43 | 4657496 seek

From what I could see in the videos and what was getting reported, it looked like there were 20-30 ninja'd-out BLM agents (I'm sure others were carrying, but these were the guys you expected to do the shooting) v. 200-500 cowpokes (presumably at least half were armed, but kept the weapons out of sight.)

So best case for the BLM was probably being outnumbered about 3:1, and worst case maybe 10:1.

Given the numbers, this was a strategic withdrawl, not a concession. They know if they come back they have to do it via blitzkrieg with probably 10X as many agents if they're going to have odds in their favor.

Yup, for the DC US, it's never over until they have killed someone or lots of someones.

For the uninitiated, the DC US burned the Davidians out, used snipers to prevent egress from the fire and used a shape-charge, bomb, to kill the women and children in the blockhouse.

Research it and ponder it.

I post this often but it bears repeating especially after Bundy:

http://wsfrprograms.fws.gov/Subpages/LicenseInfo/HuntingLicCertHistory20...

14.63 million licensed hunters in the USA.

TX 1.04 million

PA 968,735

MI 761,269

NY 581,401 (yeah Coumo & Schumer's NY)

TN 530,547

The list goes on and the numbers are staggering.  Largest army in the world and I bet most have scoped .308 rifles.  They are good will cammo and hiding too.

The CCW numbers are staggering.  Just FL, AL and GA have 2.3 million CCW holders.

There's long been a saying the largest infantry in the world is in Michigan during deer season, and that's probably not far off.

And these are just licensed hunters. Add in target shooters, etc and you get to the one gun per person stat in the US pretty easily.

I was once stopped by a Game Warden while trapping nutria in a restricted area. I did not have the proper permit. He wrote me a warning ticket, then he wrote me the permit I needed and told me to kill every fucking one I could get my hands on. He then told me when I wiped them all out of that area to call him and he'd give me another area to work.

Remember a couple of years back a Russian MiG-29 taking out a UAV over the Black Sea off Abkhazia's coast? It used an IR missile it do it too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6b35gjZ9cc

The Russians really don't appreciate recon intrusions in that area, lots of facilities they don't want targeted, and these ships (at least one of them) can carry a rotor-wing UAV. Plus they are also of course a part of the boost-phase intercept capability for the US missile defense system first layer, the one Russia vehemently objects to.

Broward County, Florida. (Now if they were headed to capture Debbie Wasserman I wouldn't have minded, but the sound from their engines overpowered my computer speakers.)

And if I count the times that jets flew within half a mile of my house...Are we sure the authors of the 2nd Amendment didn't intend for us to be able to carry Stingers?

I have blackhawks and fighters flying over all the time. When the SAS used to do the urban training they sometimes used a vacant high rise building right next door to drop in at night from blackhawks that come in fast and low and pull up and then its grenades in every room and strobe muzzle flashes. Like being in Lebanon when that's going on. At least the don't break the sound barrier any more, Air Services finally stopped all that. And that I really didn't like. I'm sitting listening to some music one day on a record player and a Mirage III goes overhead beyond the sound barrier and the plaster ceiling visibly bowed down about an inch from the concussion wave. That shits you off kinda quick. Needle skipping across the record doesn't help either. I thought the raintree had fallen over on the house, I went outside quick to have a look and the tree was fine, I looked around and then I spotted a Mirage a couple miles away entering the circuit. Pricks.
