Russian Fighter Jet Flies Repeatedly Within 1000 Yards Of US Warship In The Black Sea

Tyler Durden's picture

As we reported last Friday, a second US warship, the destroyer Donald Cook, crossed the Bosphorus last week and entered the Black Sea at precisely the time when NATO was arguing that its encroaching presence around Russia should not spook anyone. Apparently it spooked someone, namely Russia, which over the weekend decided to give the Americans a warm welcome. As AP reports, "A U.S. military official says a Russian fighter jet made multiple, close-range passes near an American warship in the Black Sea for more than 90 minutes Saturday amid escalating tensions in the region."

From AP:

The official says the fighter flew within 1,000 yards of the USS Donald Cook, a Navy destroyer, at about 500 feet above sea level, saying this prompted ship commanders to issue several radio warnings. The fighter appeared to be unarmed and the passes ended without incident.

In the first public account of the incident, the official said the Russian Fencer flew within 1,000 yards of the USS Donald Cook, a Navy destroyer, at about 500 feet above sea level. Ship commanders considered the actions provocative and inconsistent with international agreements, prompting the ship to issue several radio queries and warnings.

The fighter appeared to be unarmed and never was in danger of coming in contact with the ship, said the official, who was not authorized to talk publicly by name about the encounter so spoke on condition of anonymity. The passes, which occurred in the early evening there, ended without incident.

The official also said that a Russian Navy ship, a frigate, has been shadowing the U.S. warship, remaining within visual distance but not close enough to be unsafe.

The USS Donald Cook has been conducting routine operations in international waters east of Romania. The ship, which carries helicopters, was deployed to the Black Sea on April 10, in the wake of the Russian military takeover of Ukraine's Crimea region and ongoing unrest there.

It is unclear if Russia was simply marking what is clearly considers its own expanded territorial waters, or if the Su-24 pilots were just being friendly.

Curious where the ship is now? It is currently at anchor in the Romanian port of Constanca where it welcomed the country's president Basescu:

The forward deployed guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) welcomed aboard Romanian President Traian B?sescu while the ship was in port in Constanta, April 14.

140414-N-KE519-048.jpg

President B?sescu was met by members of the U.S. Embassy and Donald Cook’s commanding officer Cmdr. Scott Jones. He was then given a tour of the ship, including the Navigation Bridge, Combat Information Center and Engineering Control.

140414-N-KE519-054.jpg

Donald Cook, the first of four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers to be forward-deployed to Rota, Spain, is serving on a scheduled patrol in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations as part of the President's European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA) to ballistic missile defense in Europe.

FW:

U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts a full range of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation missions in concert with coalition, joint, interagency, and other parties in order to advance security and stability in Europe and Africa.

And to confirm that military overflights are hardly an isolated event around the Ukraine, moments ago photos were taken of a military helicopter flying over downtown Donestk in the east Ukraine, which as is widely known, is largely in the hands of "pro Russian separatists."

Payne:  "This was normal back in the 70s and 80s.  Baiting the bull."

Back in the old cold war days we'd run NATO exercises in the North Sea and various USSR bombers were always over head. There were also 'fishing boats' loaded with antennas trailing close to us. Never once did we ever see anyone fishing off them. And, of course, they had their subs out there too.

The North Sea felt pretty crowded.

It isn't that large an area.  If you're travelling at 1000 KMPH from Sebastopol then you might cross the Black Sea in 20 minutes.

The plane was probably doing take-off and landing runs from Sebastopol.  Just imagine they have 10 destroyers (5 Russian, and 5 non-BlackSea) and 10 planes in the air over the Black Sea.

Want a 50 mile radius buffer zone ?   Then throw in automatic defense systems.   Its like a Pachinko machine out on the Black Sea...and everyone is hot and lit up.  5 minute reaction time...tops ?

You know, from the middle ages on through the Renaissance and even into fairly recent history, the Church and its allies kept trying to push an agenda of internal peace and external warfare, preaching that the princes of Europe should band together to make war on the Muslims (think: everything from the crusades to the Barbary pirate wars) and, domestically, reap the rewards of peace.  The US and Russia are pretty much the only ones still going on the anti-Muslim expeditions (the Russians cherish the Chechens and Afghanis with about as much cheek-turning brotherly love as the Americans do everyone in MENA).  Oddly, the Americans and the Russians also hate each other.  I guess that whole "common enemy" idea that the Church was pushing was never really going to work out.

Everyone understands the cat and mouse game militaries play with each other. But 1,000 yards? How close do they get to fly before the USN knocks one out of the air? Oh boy. Somebody is bound to do something really, really stupid if this keeps up. Remember: the Black Sea is not a lake; it's international waters. If the USN gets inside Russian waters then Ivan has every right to go ape and attack. But in international waters it's a different story. I think it was a pilot following orders from someone not at the very top. Putin and his top generals are smarter than this.

No more than nine non-Black Sea state warships, with a total aggregate tonnage of no more than 30,000 tons, may pass at any one time through the Bosporus Straits and the Dardanelles, and they are permitted to stay in the Black Sea for no longer than twenty-one days. Can you imagine if the USN put 9 ships in the Black Sea at all times just to push things? Jeez. Both sides need to be thinking with a cool head. All it takes is one pilot or one sea captain to make a big mistake and all hell will break out. In the meantime, Russia just has to live with ships right off Crimea. But we'd have to live with Ivan sailing in international waters right off the Houston port too. In either case ships that close to a foreign port would be dead meat if a war went hot.

"But 1,000 yards? How close do they get to fly before the USN knocks one out of the air? Oh boy. Somebody is bound to do something really, really stupid if this keeps up."

This does worry me a little bit. I know it doesn't sound close, but 1000 yards is extremely close when dealing with things that fly super fucking fast. The ship's automated defense systems really could interpret the jet at some kind of missile and try to shoot it down. I hope the American and Russian military people talk to each other so this doesn't happen again.

and russians can take out any ship in black sea, with their missiles based on ground, with no difficulty too. Not sure losing a ship to kill a plane does worth it.

A self-deploying sea mine to break its back would be enough, no need to make a kerfuffle.

If the US is using rotor-wing drones from those ships to recon on Russian naval forces and ground units (and I guarantee you they are, as most Anglo western frigates and destroyers have a light drone these days for that very reason) then the fighter has probably shot one down and paid them a visit to say hello. The whole thing is more dangerous than people realize, especially if Russians are moving across the border.

Chances are the US visits to Kiev are to stage tactical level recon drone flights from there for that very reason. They'll just use the small ones, gear that doesn't matter if they lose a few dozen of them, as many are cheaper than artillery shells, and can yield big results. So we can expect a fair bit of comms jamming the the occasional electro-optical guided ground fire to take them down.

Which just makes the miscalculation potential and tension so much higher. Whether they knock it off from there is not likely because Russia will not just let them do it, like Pakistan did, Russia will actually remove the source of them.

And kiev will without doubt go along with it and encourge it because Kiev is desperate for Western intervention and support at this point. They are just as likely to deliberately create an incident to drag in support.

I don’t think the even the fanatics in the State Department and the mainstream media actually want a war, though a few might, mainly in the press. But I do believe they want some equivalent of a new Cold War since the so-called “War on Terror” seems to have run out of steam, though it can always be held in reserve since it is not obvious that the US is now supporting these movements as it has done since the end of WWII. This is all very Machiavellian and is mainly about Washington, not Ukraine. This crisis, along with the farce about Syria last year, is just another bit of maneuvering within Washington power-circles and lobbyists. There’s a lot of money at stake here–where that money goes and to which operation is the key to understanding American foreign policy, particularly during this relatively weak Administration.
