NATO To Boost Air, Warship Presence Around Russia; Netherlands May Deploy F-16s To Ukraine

Tyler Durden's picture

If there is was one way to assure a certain escalation in Ukraine hostilities beyond what has already happened, it is for NATO to do precisely what Russia warned it should not do: build up its presence in the surrounding countries. Which is why we find it somewhat puzzling that NATO announced it would do just this when as the Guardian reported, the military alliance said it would step up its presence around Russian borders to "reassure eastern European member states."

The reinforcements on Nato's eastern flank will take the form of more air patrols over the Baltic states, greater numbers of warships in both the Baltic and eastern Mediterranean, and more troops deployed in eastern Europe.

The Nato buildup will also involve the redeployment of warships, some of them now participating in counter-piracy operations off Somalia, to the Baltic and the Mediterranean. A Nato official said the details of the naval measures were still being discussed.

The Nato commander in Europe, General Philip Breedlove, said several Nato member states had offered ground troops for deployment in eastern European member states and that he would be soon making recommendations on how they should be positioned. Breedlove said that the situation represented more than a crisis, adding: "For Nato, it's bigger than that. It's a paradigm shift."

It goes without saying that to Russia this will be seen as a hostile move on behalf of the western countries, which is why Breedlove said "he had attempted to call the Russian chief of general staff, Valery Gerasimov, to explain that the deployments were entirely defensive but had not been able to reach him."

Did he at least leave a voicemail explaining why the piling up of new troops is not to be seen as an offensive meneuver?

Furthermore, that this is happening today is no accident: tomorrow is the official start of international talks on the Ukrainian crisis in Geneva, and the NATO action is a way to increase pressure on Moscow. However, as has been seen repeatedly in the past month, the Kremlin does not handly increased pressure easily and instead, usually finds a way to re-escalate on its own.

What is the thinking behind what can only be classified as a short-sighted move? "A spokesperson for the US secretary of state, John Kerry, said his primary goal was to persuade Moscow to halt its destabilising activities in eastern Ukraine, and call publicly for separatist groups to disarm and stand down."

And just in case NATO's open action is not clear, "EU officials in Brussels said the list of Russians subject to visa bans and asset freezes would be expanded by the end of the week. The US state department also signalled it would co-ordinate a further tightening of sanctions with its European partners, but not before the Geneva talks."

"Don't expect any before tomorrow's meetings," Marie Harf, deputy spokesperson at the state department, said. "But if there are not steps taken by Russia to de-escalate, we will take additional steps, including additional sanctions."

The negotiations will bring together Kerry, his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, the Ukrainian foreign minister, Andrii Deshchytsia, and the EU's Ashton. It will mark the first time the quartet has met since the Ukrainian crisis erupted in February.

In addition to one four-way encounter, Kerry will conduct separate bilateral meetings with Lavrov, Deshchytsia and Ashton. Western officials, however, cautioned that the talks were unlikely to bring a diplomatic breakthrough.

Harf said that "top of the list" of US demands would be that Russia halt what the US alleges are destabilising activities in eastern Ukraine. The US wants Russia to publicly call on separatists exerting control in cities in eastern Ukraine to disarm and stand down.

Of course, in case Russia also misses all of this because nobody could reach the Russian chief of staff on the phone, the Netherlands announced it is looking into the deployment of F16 fighter jets as Ukraine crisis air support "to try and ease the conflict around Ukraine, defence minister Jeanine Hennis told a television talk show on Tuesday night.

While there is no question of Nato military action against Russia, ‘we want to be very visible as support to our Eastern allies’, the minister told the Pauw & Witteman show.

With orange colored F-16s it will be very difficult not to be visible:

The defence minister added: "We are looking at how we can increase our air support or sea support in, say, the Baltic or the Black Sea region,’ she said. ‘We are members of an alliance for a reason and we will take our responsibilities.'Asked specifically what form Dutch air support could take, the minister said 'it could mean sending an F16.'

Surely the expansion of NATO forces in the region will promptly force Russia to back down. In the off chance it doesn't, one wonders how NATO will respond if Russia instead adds some more tactical nukes to its arsenal along the Polish border. Puredly defensively of course. Will that, in turn, force NATO to back down? Somehow we doubt it.

some veritas i found:

"(Edward) Mezvinsky ( Chelsea fatherin law) was involved in a series of business transactions that ultimately led to his downfall.

Beginning in the early 1990s Mezvinsky fell prey to a wide variety of 419 scams. According to a federal prosecutor, Mezvinsky was conned by "just about every different kind of African-based scam we’ve ever seen."[10] In order to raise the funds needed to front the money for the fraudulent investment schemes he was being offered, Mezvinsky became, himself, a conman, tapping his network of contacts and dropping the name of the Clinton family to convince unwitting marks to give him money.[11]

In March 2001, Mezvinsky was indicted and later pleaded guilty to 31 of 69 charges of bank fraud, mail fraud, and wire fraud.[12] Nearly $10 million was involved in the crimes. Shortly after his indictment, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but the judge at his trial disallowed a mental illness defense.[5] He served his time at Federal Prison Camp, Eglin.[13] Mezvinsky, Federal Bureau of Prisons # 55040-066, was released in April 2008.[14] He remained on federal probation until 2011, and owes substantial restitution to his victims.[15]" in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Mezvinsky

The term Jew is used in at least two senses in Scripture: to refer to those who are ethnically Jews and to those who are religiously Jews. Jesus was a Jew in both senses. In fact, he completed the Jewish religion by serving as the Messiah (Christ) whom the prophets had long foretold.

What Chomsky has right, the essense, is anarchism, whose only real tenet is of opposition to coercive force.  And, really, it's not HIM, it's the "message."

I'm sure to get downvoted, but I say keep references to "the Jews" out of it.  Do I think Israel is instigating things behind the scene, using the US, Canada, France, etc. to achieve their objectives?  Yes.  But people like CH1 who is obviously Jewish has nothing to do with it, so why use a label that includes him?  It just breeds unnecessary animosity.  And there are plenty of non-Jews like McCain who is a worthless pos and is pushing for war.

@CH1:

I grew up in a Southern Baptist, Conservative, pro Israel household. For forty years I dismissed any anti Israel thoughts. The Arabs were primitive and bad, and the Israeli's were modern, forward thinking and good.

I worked with and became very good friends with a Jewish man. He was a genuinely good guy. My family and his spent time together. We socialized, ate, drank and entertained together.

We were "on the same page" so to speak.

As I became attracted to Ron Paul and his ideas about foreign policy, I noticed a distinct change in the relationship I had with my friend when I mentioned that America should be concerned with America and not be drawn into foreign entanglements.

It came to a head when I asked him point blank: "If you had to choose between America being destroyed in a nuclear attack and Israel being destroyed in a nuclear attack - which would you choose to survive?"

You of course, know his answer. We ALL know his answer.

He was born here, raised his family here, became a millionare here - but that was nothing to him. He would sacrifice this country in it's entirety to ensure the survival of his people.

I remember when my son was born and an idiot Yankee in law made a snide comment about me teaching him to hate black people as he grew up.

I told her: "I won't have to teach him to hate black people - they do a great job of that all by themselves."

Guys I think this is a good discussion that needs to be talked about perhaps maybe Tyler can put up a good link for us on that Pollard story where Kerry and Netanyahoo were pushing for his release to get the peace talks going again on that prisoner exchange a few days back.

Look there is no mistake that there is a heavy presence of Jewish people in the oligarchy (assets acquired dubiously) and in the govt especially when we have a jewish person in our govt ie Nuland picking a jewish person to be the lead guy for the govt there.  Call it what you will but ok to be fair to other Jewish people we can say the word Jewish mafia just like we have the Italian mafia.  The problem goes deep when one sees that just like the drug dealers spread money in the local community to buy good will, we have these Jewish mafia criminals buying good will via donations to Jewish charities and events.  The jewish community must turn against them if they dont want to be painted with the same brushstrokes.

Bar-Ilan prof. defiant on blood libel book 'even if crucified'

By Ofri Ilani, Ha´aretz Correspondent

Israeli paper Ha´aretz, 12/02/2007

The author of a book on the use of blood by Jews in Ashkenazi communities in the Middle Ages said Sunday, in the face of the furor its publication aroused, "I will not give up my devotion to the truth and academic freedom even if the world crucifies me."

In an interview with Haaretz from Rome, Professor Ariel Toaff said he stood behind the contention of his book, "Pasque di Sangue," just published in Italy, that there is a factual basis for some of the medieval blood libels against the Jews. However, he said he was sorry his arguments had been twisted.

"I tried to show that the Jewish world at that time was also violent, among other things because it had been hurt by Christian violence," the Bar-Ilan history professor said. Of course I do not claim that Judaism condones murder. But within Ashkenazi Judaism there were extremist groups that could have committed such an act and justified it," he said.

Toaff said he reached his conclusions after coming across testimony from the trial for the murder of a Christian child, Simon of Trento, in 1475, which in the past was believed to have been falsified. "I found there were statements and parts of the testimony that were not part of the Christian culture of the judges, and they could not have been invented or added by them. They were components appearing in prayers known from the [Jewish] prayer book.

"Over many dozens of pages I proved the centrality of blood on Passover," Toaff said. "Based on many sermons, I concluded that blood was used, especially by Ashkenazi Jews, and that there was a belief in the special curative powers of children's blood. It turns out that among the remedies of Ashkenazi Jews were powders made of blood."

Although the use of blood is prohibited by Jewish law, Toaff says he found proof of rabbinic permission to use blood, even human blood. "The rabbis permitted it both because the blood was already dried," and because in Ashkenazi communities it was an accepted custom that took on the force of law, Toaff said. There is no proof of acts of murder, Toaff said, but there were curses and hatred of Christians, and prayers inciting to cruel vengeance against Christians. "There was always the possibility that some crazy person would do something."

Toaff said the use of blood was common in medieval medicine. "In Germany, it became a real craze. Peddlers of medicines would sell human blood, the way you have a transfusion today. The Jews were influenced by this and did the same things.

"In one of the testimonies in the Trento trial, a peddler of sugar and blood is mentioned, who came to Venice," Toaff says. "I went to the archives in Venice and found that there had been a man peddling sugar and blood, which were basic products in pharmacies of the period. A man named Asher of Trento was also mentioned in the trial, who had ostensibly come with a bag and sold dried blood. One of the witnesses said he was tried for alchemy in Venice and arrested there. I took a team to the archives and found documentation of the man's trial. Thus, I found that it is not easy to discount all the testimony," he added.

Toaff, who will be returning to Israel today, said he was very hurt by accusations that his research plays into the hands of anti-Semitic incitement. "I am being presented like the new Yigal Amir. But one shouldn't be afraid to tell the truth." Toaff also said, "unfortunately my research has become marginal, and only the real or false implications it might have are being related to. I directed the research at intelligent people, who know that in the Jewish world there are different streams. I believe that academia cannot avoid dealing with issues that have an emotional impact. This is the truth, and if I don't publish it, someone else will find it and publish it."

Still, Toaff says he is sorry he did not explain some of the points in his book more clearly.

He claims that he has been making the same arguments for a long time. "After 35 years of research, I have not become a stupid anti-Semite, and have not published a book to make money."

In any case, Toaff says he believes his findings have current implications. "Extremists in the past brought disaster on us by false accusations. I wanted to show that hatred and incitement of this kind can develop, because there will always be someone who will take advantage of it."

Meanwhile, Bar-Ilan University announced Sunday that its president, Professor Moshe Kaveh, will summon Toaff to explain his research. The university's statement said it strongly objected to what was implied in media publications regarding Toaff's research, and condemned "any attempt to justify the terrible blood libels against the Jews." However, the university also reiterated that Toaff was among the senior lecturers in his field in Israel and internationally."

MY QUESTION IS WHY THE MSM IN THE WEST WOULD ALWAYS CRITISE SOMEONE WHO ONLY SEEK THE TRUTH'? Arent jewish culture just like any other human culture pontuated with human sublime values and the worst insanity? We could critise germans for their past, Russia or China for their inhumans genocide of millions, the Catholiism for Inquisition or nowaday pedophile crimes but not the jews, why?

The F-16 is arguably still the best fighter in the USA inventory according to one of it's designers Pierre Sprey.

He has said the F-35 is a piece of shit and the F-22 is not much better. The F-15 is decent but big and heavy.

USA defense contractors, especially Lockheed Martin who created the F-35 and F-22, are the biggest threat to Americans. Americans have wasted trillions on these two shit birds that are junk. The small wings on the F-35 are a joke.

I think Pierre Sprey said the F-35 is as bad as the old F-105 Thunderchief which also had no wing surface so it could not turn. The F-35 is so wide and fat from the internal fan and weapons that is flies like a brick.

All true observations Freddie, but it's the part about the aircraft being 38 years old and barely "4th generation".

India almost bought it an s-load of them in 1997-2001 until they gave the Ruskies a shake with the Sukoi F-29 "fifth generation" fighter.

The Indians went head-to-head with the U.S. Air-Force in 2004 and I remember reading the headlines that the U.S. got "spanked".  I didn't believe when I first read that story.  But then I talked to some Air-Force types with direct knowledge and they corroborated that the MIGs kick ass.

I also believe there is rumored to have been a downed F-16 in the Kargil war between Pakistan and India which is when India had been fully trained on the MIGs prior to the 1999 conflict!

Not saying the U.S. wouldn't put up a good show but I sure as hell wouldn't want to be flying up against the Russians flying the top of the line Sukois against our "4th Gen" F-16s in their own backyard!

One could buy 4-5 su-30 for the cost of one f-35 by my reckoning.  But hey, what's not to love?  It's just paper and there is no actual linkage between warfare and economics, pffft numbers.  I love this wildly delusional talking point...> sure, the sukhoi are elegant, manuverable, brilliant flyers; built the Russian way, to survive real world nasty war zone conditions like effed up runways and shitty fuel.  But who needs ruggedness and manuverability, they're so passe'.  The f-35 will just use complex software and hardware, which will always function perfectly, to wipe out all it's enemies from over the horizon, hell, it doesn't even need to actually fly... look just send us the money.  HA HA

Latest report on the F-35 is that they will finish coding the 20 million lines of software sometime in 2018. WoW is hard wired into the Head Up Display, you get to select from 30 different porn sites and also get free Netflix and free PBS. Going to be a rocketship that one. How many years have they been writing the software code?  A decade? 15 years? 20?  How many Indian H1B programmers were involved?  The Russian programmers, I am sure, are top notch on their stuff.

Pierre Sprey said if the F-35 gets hit by a .22 or any flak then it is a fireball.  It is such a heavy brick and it has phony stealth that the skin is very thin on the plane.  Total junk.

Well at the rate the U.S. (forget NATO and Israhell who contribute nothing but insitgate everything) is pushing things along, we may get an opportunity to see what the "counts" are like on either side with that one.

In case you missed this one on the F-35 Yeah I know you probably already know all about that... To your point though.

If the U.S. military is ever that fucking stupid to pull something in the Black Sea or Baltic, God help them and the rest of us because it would escalate rapidly into something that the World may never revisit again.

Like most you'll want to be as close to the "center targets" as you can be because surviving in the aftermathc will be an acquired taste -just ask the kids that were part of the clean up operation 3 years ago in Fukushima aboard the USS Reagan how life with their government's unwavering support are treating them these days much like the U.S. military did in it's coverup of Gulf War Syndrome after 1991?...

“If you initialed one dollar bill a second,” writes Bryson, “you would make $1,000 every 17 minutes. After 12 days of non-stop effort you would acquire your first million. Thus, it would take you 120 days to accumulate $10 million, and 1,200 days — something over three years — to reach $100 million. After 31.7 years you would become a billionaire. But not until 31,709.8 years elapsed would you count your trillionth dollar bill.

but, but, I heard an important US talking figure head this morning rambling on that Russia would be 'stupid' to go to war with the US....well, what was his reasoning you ask? Because the US spends $600+Billion on defense and Russia only $88Billion....

Genious logic. Like any poorly run business or project, spending more money does not mean things are better. I think Russia has comparable weapons systems...maybe even better weapon systems for the threats (like the USA with big Aircraft Carriers or crappy 4th gen fighter jets)....I'm no weapons expert but a 'system system' seems to be their strategy, and it may just work.

If we get into a scrap, I think there could be trouble....and if China joins in, we are in trouble (just from the shear number of people to deal with in that country alone)....

Yes.  There was a simulation done by the slimy Rand Corp. in So Cal who's mission was simulating nuclear war.  Alex Jones really hates them.  I don't fully trust him but that is another story.

Anyway it was a simulation of the USA defending the Taiwanese Straits against China.  The USA had F-35s, F-22 and F-15s.  The F-35 was the worst followed by the F-22.  The Chinese had mainly Su27s,29s and 30s.

Well this shit got leaked in Australia and it caused a firestorm. Rand Corp. had to back down.

The USA has only "fought" against small and poor countries.  The Russians have top computer programmers and pretty state of the art stuff.  Many USA defense companies have H1B programmers from India.  Most good American programmers do not want to work for MIC.   Those Russian birds are really cool looking too and their pilots are no slouches.

I also agree with your theory. The US sow mayhem in places that continue unabated and even increase long after they're gone. Libya is a great example. They can only have order in a place like that with a strongman like Gaddafi. Forget democracy in a place like that even individuals argue with themselves for sport if they're lonely.

Iraq, Afghanistan are the same. But, now Gaddafi has been killed, the whole of Africa is open to US Africom whereas Gaddafi stood in the way.

I think Putin is the same. There is nothin in Ukraine worth fighting over except causing mayhem there. They will ultimately undermine Putin and Russia like a virus coming in from Ukraine. Then again, this may be just Obama payback because Putin making him look like a double minded limp wristed fudgepacker re Syria? or for saying this......

.

Obama’s Advancing Empire: Putsch, Pillage and Duplicity (03.08.2014)

"... The driving strategy of US policy was to encircle and reduce Russia to the status of a weak, marginal power, and to undermine Vladimir Putin’s efforts to restore Russia’s position as a regional power. In 2008 Washington’s puppet regime in Georgia, tested the mettle of the Russian state by launching an assault on South Ossetia, killing at least 10 Russian peacekeepers and wounding hundreds (not to mention thousands of civilians). Then-Russian President Medvedev responded by sending the Russian armed forces to repel Georgian troops and support the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

U.S. diplomatic agreements with Russia had been asymmetrical – Russia was to acquiesce in Western expansion in exchange for ‘political acceptance’. Duplicity trumped open-diplomacy. Despite agreements to the contrary, U.S. bases and missile installations were established throughout Eastern Europe, pointing at Russia, under the pretext that they were “really targeting Iran”. Even as Russia protested that post-Cold War agreements were breached, the Empire ignored Moscow’s complaints and encirclement advanced.

In a further diplomatic disaster, Russia and China signed off on a U.S.-authored United Nations Security Council agreement to allow NATO to engage in “humanitarian overflights” in Libya. NATO immediately took this as the ‘green light’ for attack and converted ‘humanitarian intervention’ into a devastating aerial bombing campaign that led to the overthrow of Libya’s legitimate government and the destruction of Libya as viable, independent North African state. By signing the ‘humanitarian’ UN agreement, Russia and China lost a friendly government and trading partner in Africa! Even earlier, the Russians had agreed to allow the US to transport weapons and troops through Russian Federation territory to support the US invasion of Afghanistan … with no reciprocal gain (except perhaps an even greater flood of Afghan heroin).

Russian diplomats agreed to US (Zionist)-authored UN economic sanctions against Iran’s non-existent nuclear weapons program … undermining a political ally and lucrative market. Moscow believed that by backing US sanctions on Iran and granting transport routes to Afghanistan in late 2001 they would receive some ‘security guarantees’ from the Americans regarding the separatist movements in the Caucuses. The U.S. ‘reciprocated’ by further backing Chechen separatist leaders exiled in the US despite the on-going terror campaigns against Russian civilians – up to and even after the Chechen slaughter of hundreds of school children and teachers in Beslan in 2004….

With the US under Obama advancing its encirclement of Russia in Eurasia and its isolation in North Africa and the Middle East, Putin finally decided to draw a line by backing Russia’s only remaining ally in the Middle East, Syria. Putin sought to secure a negotiated end to the Western-Gulf Monarchist-backed mercenary invasion of Damascus. To little avail: The US and EU increased arms shipments, military trainers and financing to the 30,000 Islamist mercenaries based in Jordan as they engaged in cross-border attacks to overthrow the Syrian government.

Washington and Brussels continued their imperial push toward the Russian heartland by organizing and financing a violent seizure of power (putsch) in western Ukraine. The Obama regime financed a coalition of armed neo-Nazi street fighters and neo-liberal politicos, to the tune of $5 billion dollars, to overthrow the elected regime. The putschists then moved to end Crimean autonomy and break long-standing military treaty agreements with Russia. Under enormous pressure from the autonomous Crimean government and the vast majority of the population and facing the critical loss of its naval and military facilities on the Black Sea, Putin, finally, forcefully moved Russian troops into a defensive mode in Crimea..."

Yeah, an I'm sure the Baku pipeline project and the Gas terminal installed in Abkhasia, and the beginning of the Black Sea Pipeline to Ukraine had nothing to do with it.

Sure, sure, carve  Russia up.

That's why all that money was sent to Russia in the 1990s, so the Russians could make a sporting match of it.  Had they acted on their plans and sent tanks THEN why, Russia was in no position to respond.  Everyone likes a good sporting match.

Next up, how American bulets at islamists and Chechens in Afghanistan is really a sign of love.  The Chechens and Islamicists just adore it! And can't wait to show thier gratitude by attacking Russia.

If you had taken the time to read the editorial before responding, you would have seen the author discussed the Yeltsin days (1991-1999) in another part of the article. Also IMF loans are often made in part so that the banks can be paid back: taxes go to the IMF, IMF makes loans to different states, then those states pay the banks principle and interest. Not 100% sure that was the case with Russia but it's a possibility.

"With the advent of President Vladimir Putin and the reconstitution of the Russian state and economy, the U.S. lost a vassal client and source of plundered wealth. Washington’s empire-builders continued to seek Russian ‘cooperation and collaboration’ in undermining independent states, isolating China and pursuing its colonial wars. The Russian state, under Putin and Medvedev, had sought to accommodate U.S. empire builders via negotiated agreements, which would enhance Russia’s position in Europe, recognize Russian strategic borders and acknowledge Russian security concerns. However, Russian diplomacy secured few and transitory gains while the US and EU made major gains with Russian complicity and passivity.

The un-stated agenda of Washington, especially with Obama’s drive to re-launch a new wave of imperial conquests, was to undermine Russia’s re-emergence as a major player in world politics. The strategic idea was to isolate Russia, weaken its growing international presence and return it to the vassal status of the Yeltsin period, if possible."

With the war against Afghanistan, the US now has many military bases in the country, as well as other benefits:

LOL so true, I would love to see the American companies just try to close up shop in China and move out all those machines and robots out of China so they can set up shop in Vietnam or Malaysia or Indonesia.  LOL its not going to happen.

Actually might be the best thing that could happen to..imagine if we actually made shit again? The BLS would not have to falsify all those jobs and wages might increase.

Themselves!  The US proved that an 80%+ of GDP based on internal consumption can create a "successful" economy!

The circus is going to end.  China will still be needing energy.  Russia is a neighbor.  The world is going to shrink: no longer the big global JIT system.  Doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand the more natural/real world forces in play...

I don't even think that it needs to be said, I think it's pretty much known, which is why China isn't saying anything (other then their original/only comment).

The 'War on Terror' needs no face, only an ulterior motive.

Piranha: carnivorous fish (a shoal devours a person in 10 minutes, leaving only the bones).

Boi: same cow.

"Ox Piranha":

The term comes from the rural areas where livestock farmers, while crossing a river infested with piranhas, the bulls butchered, old and / or sick, and threw his body, bleeding, to the river, to attract carnivorous fish as they passed with the herd.

Drawing this for those who were not able to translate the Google link from Wikipedia in Portuguese that I sent.

The meaning of the comment was to warn that these airplanes and ships are small, serve as that "old bull" that is bled before proceeding biggest thing.
