There was, and probably still is, a multiple choice test by the Mathematical Association of America. If there were 5 possible answers, they would add the number of correct answers, and subtract off 1/4 of the wrong answers. So if you guessed randomly you would end up with a score of zero, on average. In other words, there was no benefit to guessing if you couldn't eliminate at least one of the choices. Apparently the test was difficult, and some people ended up with negative scores.
If there were a way to take take everything some of those Yahoo posters think is true that is, and subtract off what they think is true but is false, I'm not sure many of them would end up with a positive number.
