Hyper-Sensitive Illinois Mayor Orders Police Raid Over Parody Twitter Account

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

Just yesterday, I wrote a post about how a South Carolina construction worker was fined $525 and lost his job for not paying $0.89 for a drink refill while working at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in downtown Charleston. The point was to emphasize how the law comes down with a devastating vengeance when an average citizen commits a minor crime, yet allows the super rich to loot and pillage with zero repercussions. There is now a systemic two-tier justice system operating in these United States, and the result will unquestionably be tyranny if the trend continues unabated.

The latest example of a lowly citizen being subject to a disproportionate use of the law, is Jon Daniel of Peoria, Illinois. Jon was behind a parody Twitter account that mocked Peoria mayor Jim Ardis, and his biggest mistake was not making it clear that it was a parody. As a result, Twitter had already suspended the account weeks ago. Problem solved, right? Wrong.

The tough guy mayor was so offended that a plebe would dare criticize his royal highness that he ordered a police raid on the home of Jon Daniel and his roommates. Peoria native, Justin Glawe wrote an excellent article on the subject for Vice. He writes:

Jon Daniel woke up on Thursday morning to a news crew in his living room, which was a welcome change from the company he had on Tuesday night, when the Peoria, Illinois, police came crashing through the door. The officers tore the 28-year-old’s home apart, seizing electronics and taking several of his roommates in for questioning; one woman who lived there spent three hours in an interrogation room. All for a parody Twitter account.

Yes, the cops raided Daniel’s home because they wanted to find out who was behind @peoriamayor, an account that had been shut down weeks ago by Twitter. When it was active, Daniel used it to portray Jim Ardis, the mayor of Peoria, as a weed-smoking, stripper-loving, Midwestern answer to Rob Ford. The account never had more than 50 followers, and Twitter had killed it because it wasn’t clearly marked as a parody. It was a joke, a lark—but it brought the police to Daniel’s door. The cops even took Daniel and one of his housemates in for in-depth questioning—they showed up at their jobs, cuffed them, and confiscated their phones—because of a bunch of Twitter jokes.

So the police raid on Daniel’s house wasn’t an isolated incident; it was just another case of the cops acting shady—and naturally, many in this town are raising serious questions and concerns over the use of taxpayer resources and manpower to find out who ran @peoriamayor.

Fortunately, this story does have a silver lining. Daniel’s original Twitter account was actually pretty unsuccessful, with only 50 followers by the time it was shut down. Mayor Jim Ardis should’ve just left well enough alone, but he couldn’t do that, and as a result of all the attention this story has received in the blogosphere, new parody accounts have emerged. The most successful one is @NotPeoriaMayor and the avatar is Jim Ardis with a Hitler mustache. See below:

The best part is this account already has 7x the followers of the other one.

Lesson Learned: Don’t fuck with the Internet.

The LA Times also covered the story, here.

Even a fairly suck-ass defense attorney would be able to get any evidence found at the scene tossed out under these circumstances. The police could have found child sex slaves repackaging cocaine on the premises and if there's any documentation (of which there will be plenty) showing the raid was done without documentable probable cause, everything would be surpressed.

Seriously, the cops and mayor are completely fucked from a legal perspective. So are the taxpayers in that town, unfortunately.

So what would be recourse to the situation? Would the Illinois state legislature have to pass law stripping the mayor and the jurisdiction's police force of their powers? The Feds?

After witnessing the point of this article, that a two-tiered judicial, and more broadly, societal system, exists in the USSA, it would be no surprise to me that "no violation of personal or property rights occured in this case", would be TPTB's public decree.

That's why I have serious doubts about the "Oath Keepers" and their ilk. I mean what good is proclaiming you won't fire on Americans of confiscate their guns if you spend the other 99% of your time enforcing blatantly unconstitutional drug laws, asset seizures, bogus searches, and so on?

The Oathkeepers formed shortly after the end of the Bush administration.  Kinda hurts their credibility.  I don't know any Oath Keepers personally, but based on cursory visits to their websites it seems they are into fetishizing the badge, the law, and their heroic image of themselves.  In other words, they are cops.  Maybe "good cops" (if there is such a thing anymore), but still cops.  They will find some way to justify making some smartass hippie eat a mag-lite.

And I was (in many ways still am) a hippie and they don't have a problem with me being me. I can say honestly, you really don't want to fuck around with some of these guys in an offensive way. The ones I know are rational, thoughtful and skilled in a variety of things besides just killing people.

Just sayin, reach out, get to know one or two and see if your opinion changes.

Good to know.

Have you ever heard through the grapevine that an Oath Keeper was fired for refusing to bring the hammer down on someone?  I've never heard of such a thing even though I spend way too much time on the interwebs.  The Google results are sparse.  Probably doesn't happen very often.

Officers are taught that they DO NOT HAVE TO follow orders from their superiors if they think the order is wrong, unethical or immoral, if thats what your asking.

Now, if you're asking if an unethical or immoral officer would carry out such an order from a superior officer, thats another thing completely.

Officers have been known to get fragged too, just to get around the paper work ;-)

Fri, 04/18/2014 - 22:19 | 4674754 22winmag

That's my point. It's very easy to say you won't fire on American citizens or confiscate their guns during a shtf scenario. It's very hard (impossible?) to say you won't enforce unconstitutional laws or employ military tactics during peacetime.

To me a real Oath Keeper would refuse any and all orders that stemmed from blatantly unconstitutional, unamerican laws such as drug prohibition, asset forfeiture, victimless crimes, etc.

Fri, 04/18/2014 - 23:30 | 4674846 New World Chaos
New World Chaos's picture

Yeah, let's see them take and live up to an oath that matters every day.

The Oath Keeper oaths are mainly geared towards martial law scenarios.  They don't explicitly cover drugs, asset forfeiture, raw milk, lemonade stands, illegal camping, etc.  However, they do have an oath about warrantless searches (which cops do all the time), and an oath about not trampling the right to free speech (which cops also do all the time with protesters, including Jon Daniel here).  There is an oath about no property confiscations in a SHTF scenario but cops unjustly confiscate property all the time.  There is even an established legal mechanism for when they actually bother going through the courts:  Your property is charged with being an accessory to a crime.  You (supposedly) have Constitutional rights, but your property doesn't, so it cannot defend itself against the Law.  You lose your stuff even if the crimminal case against you never goes to court.  Proceeds go straight to the donut fund.  I have to wonder how many Oath Keepers are involved in this day-to-day tyranny.  "Just enforcing the Law" doesn't make it any less evil.  It also morally grinds people down and makes the final push into the ovens easier.

Thank you.

Remember, only 1% of oathkeepers are actual members of that group. The other 99% sort of float around, heh heh.

The ones I know only follow the US Constitution. Which means they disregard 90% of raw milk, etc edicts from the Queen.

The way I understand it, is as you describe.

More of the basic oath (already sworn to) to defend the people against tyranny, with their lives if necessary. And not to be involved in enforcing King Obama's seemingly daily edicts & declarations regarding health insurance, raw milk, SUV's, vaccination scare mongering and the other assorted regulatory nonsense which spring forth from the kings courts.

The IRS, HHS, EPA, USDA etc. are the ones enforcing/imposing all that crap, with the permission of the people, apparently.

Not Oath Keepers ;-)

I was in the military and have been around enough cops to know that many soliders and cops are stressed out, wife-beating, bullies and criminals.

What I see is selective "Oath Keeping". Basically, "we don't take your guns or fire on American citizens in a shtf scenario, but we will vigorously enforce every unconstitutional law on the books during peacetime." That seems like an awfully easy oath to take. If they refused to enforce grossly unconstitutional laws and tactics during peacetime, they'd be out of a paycheck, and I don't see that heppening.

I know all the progressive and neoconservative voters cheer what you did and I know you did it all for Public Safety, the Common Good and to uphold your end of the Social Contract.  You have to show who's boss.

My only criticisms are (1) You failed to call in Federal Agencies for added support -- they will be angry because you denied them overtime pay and (2) You didn't slaughter a household pet.

Fuck me, if a twatter post gets a useless politician that bent out of shape I should have signed up for a twatter account back in 1994.

Oh wait, sorry... the intertubes were just being born around that time. How time flies, eh you scumbag politicians? Now we all know what scum you really are and can read it in real time HFT-like news platforms. And the intertubes have a looong memory. Just like your NSA masters.

That would be the key to any successful revolution - capture the NSA systems intact as evidence.  Everything, and I mean everything, is probably on record somewhere in those data stores.

TheReplacement: Yes, capture the spy gear but let's not waste our time fighting the past. Destroy the spy gear. Let the keepers walk out and assure them they won't be harmed. But the system, its infrastructure, its operations will be destroyed completely. Everyone gets to have a "zero hour" and begin again.

Government types sure are getting awfully authoritarian these days.

My town just received an armored vehicle, courtesy of an anonymous donor.  A $150,000 item given to the cops with no disclosure of where it came from.  Fucking ridiculous.  Public servants?  Bullshit.  Self servants. Peoria isn't far from me.  Maybe our asshole cops can loan Peoria the city's new armored vehicle the next time they want to raid the apartment of a pot smoking "parodist" with a twitter account.  They can be very dangerous, you know.

If there is a SWAT-style raid such as this, doesn't there have to be probable cause that crime has been committed?

Isn't there a warrant signed by a judge, with sworn claims made by a DA or this filthy police chief?

The individuals involved in this farce are going to be involved in lawsuits until they're on oxygen bottles in the old fascists' home.

After the 9/11 inside job it is abundantly clear the the rule of law in the USA has failed .When you have the government killing of his own citizens and jails them for trivial matters the meaning is clear . The contract between the citizens and the government has been broken and anybody can take the law into his own hands . I am surprised that the shooting of government officials , police and judiciary and the AiPAc criminals has not yet started . How long before we see the second revolution ? I predict guerilla warfare will start soon .

In 1995, Ardis was arrested for indecent exposure in the wooded area of a Peoria park known for homosexual activity. Dressed in drag at the time, he told police he wasn't gay and was just returning home from a costume party.

Hehe.. I was joking about him sucking his way to the top. But flopping out your cock to the crowd and being arrested for it seems a fair bit worse than verbally abusing some hypersensitive Mayor.

These turds are true low lifes.

this isn't the first time the peoria criminal police department has destroyed a home in wanton aggression. that police department is entirely a division of organized crime. peoria is a totalitarian terror province, and a truly frightening place to be. i would never again touch foot in that place.

I grew up in Peoria but left over 30 years ago and have lost most touch with it.  It's an imploded city a-la Cincinnati ... all the crackers split for the north suburbs long ago.  It is a classic, formerly industrial Germanic midwest town that got sold downriver when we moved off the manufacturing base.  If CAT leaves (they have a sweetheart tax break, were begged to stay instate) it will be a General Assistance ghost town.  There are plenty of lawyers there and someone should be able to make some coin over this.  It's not a right wing haven by any means.  Ardis won't get away with it.

I go back for a few days in the summer to see family ... nothing ever happens, decades in decline, permafrost of recession hanging over.  No action.
