The One Thing Most Desired By Chinese Consumers Is...

Tyler Durden's picture

Hint: it's not designer clothes, shoes, bags or watches.

And some additional explanation from the World Gold Council:

The Chinese traditionally regard gold as a form of money. Indeed, the character for gold in Mandarin (jin) is also a synonym for money. This is an important fact when it comes to the motivations behind the purchase of jewellery. Asian buyers of plain, 22 or 24 carat jewellery have no doubt in their mind that they are buying gold as well as an object of beauty that can be worn. The perception of value is very important in markets such as India and China where plain, very high carat or ‘pure gold’ articles bought on low-mark-ups comprise the majority of gold jewellery consumption. As such, the level and direction of local gold prices usually have an important bearing on jewellery consumption. This was very clear in 2013 when in April of that year the sudden slump in prices triggered an extraordinary wave of buying in China. Consumers perceived this as a unique opportunity to exchange renminbi for gold at a very favourable rate. It was also of course a chance to bring forward planned purchases for gifts or weddings, especially as the consensus was that prices were bound, eventually, to move a good deal higher.

World Gold Council consumer research indicates that consumers remain very positively disposed towards ‘pure gold’ jewellery. It might be thought that the disappointing price trend in the second half of 2013 had undermined this optimism as well as the public’s desire to purchase ‘pure gold’ jewellery. This does not seem to be the case. An extensive consumer survey conducted towards the end of 2013 on behalf of the World Gold Council illustrates how China’s population continues to view ‘pure gold’ jewellery as a form of money, with little indication that this traditional attitude will change any time soon. Asked whether they agreed with the statement that 24 carat gold jewellery "...is as much an investment as it is a fashion item” no less than 80% of the sample agreed, while only 4% disagreed (16% held no view either way). Agreement levels were strong across all respondents. Moreover, support for future demand is strong: in a separate survey of over 10,000 Chinese consumers, 76% of those aged between 18 and 27 also affirmed ‘pure gold’ jewellery’s investment status. And the majority of respondents planned to maintain or increase their spending on 24 carat gold jewellery over the next 12 months (44% and 35% respectively.

Goldman was talking about gold financing deals. Those have nothing to do with consumer demand and everything to do with the leverage carry trade unwind.

I remember a conversation between Bernank and Dr. Paul, regarding "money" Bernank explained that bank's offer consumers a service. I guess meaning his definition of money is the accounting system of inter-related assets and loans by banks. That is currency, not money.

I would have expected to see things like "BREATHABLE AIR" and "DRINKABLE WATER" on the list.

Australia's totally socialist now, even though they have a lot of open spaces (mostly dry, uninhabitable desert), so the Chinese really see no reason to move there (well, some of them do, I suppose, because it's so much like the totalitarian socialist home they left).

I remember back in '69, swimming in the Fairlight side of Sydney harbour, just having a good time, and all of a sudden, a peice of toilet paper came floating by. Shortly thereafter, a whole bunch more came by me, along with a load of human feces. It seems that the sanitation workers' union had decided to call a wildcat strike, and they were dumping raw sewage in to the harbour to force their point. It was pretty shitty of them.

Yeah, you had to buy a license to have a television, even back then. Every year, they would put aside one entire day to preview the commercials for the coming year and broadcast them. I still remember the Aeroplane Jelly song.

They drive on the wrong side of the road, for God's sake! Their weather's ass-backwards, too.

Ever notice that most govt/mosad/cheney sponsored False Flag Events happen on Monday's so they can milk the news week with repetitive window dressing stories to ramp up the fear and the certainty that one of their well paid terror groups are to blame, and that America needs to rally around the flag and say, go get those mean ol who ever the 'blamed of the day' is going to be.

There is no doubt that mark potack and his group of HATE FILLED anti-American traitors and foreign enemy agents will be in there too pumping the lies and dis-information to benefit who? The American People? Not! They are all about blaming the usual suspects in the liberty movement and stretching truth to it's en'th degree. Oh, but the rabbit hole of hell goes deep with its hateful group of evil things that hate freedom loving Americans, and America herself.

"The SPLC has two primary purposes; it serves as a business orientated, money-making scheme for millionaire Morris Dees. Secondly, it acts as a propaganda vehicle to attack opponents of cultural Marxism and Jewish supremacism in the United States and is particularly engaged in a racial campaign against European Americans, their social, cultural, religious and economic interests, as well as their represented leaders. The means in which it propagates this is through the mobilization of Freudo-Marxian newspeak, developed primarily by the Frankfurt School– known as political correctness."

The SPLC has tried to put across an ambiguous image to its de facto Jewish group interest nature. It was founded by Morris Dees and Joseph J Levin?–the former a cosmopolitan mercenary accused in court of child molestation,[1] the latter a confirmed Jew. The current SPLC president J Richard Cohen? is also Jewish, as is its main media representative Mark Potok.? The SPLC have positioned themselves as enemies of freedom of thought, speech, association and empirical inquiry in the United States."

He is not a Jew hater, we all know and have met many decent Jewish people just like there are many decent Christians, BUT there is a certain percentage in each group that are doing a lot of harm to the world in upholding the dollar hegemony, and have no compulsions about destroying governments and killing innocents.  So let us maybe call them Jewish Mafia/ Jewish Banking Clans, Neo Conservatice Christians or MIC.  And when someone strays remind them that maybe they are refering to JM or JBC or NC or MIC.

And while every country and ethnic group has these kinds of people, the above mentioned are in positions of extreme power by controling powerful militaries and financial systems that do a lot of damage.

Goldman has zero hard data on the existance any leveraged gold or copper financing deals beyond anecdotal evidence.  It is all speculation and estimation.  Even if it were true, China cannot export any gold by law.  So it isn't coming back.  And it assumes the structure of these deals does not involve already paper hedges which will be bought back or that there are not willing buyers for the gold outside of the banking system.  I don't often strongly disagree with a major meme here.  But this one is not soundly researched.  The only gold financing deals that are going bad are the ones where the Fed has no gold to give back to other countries and the bankers have no gold to give back to the Fed.  Those have always been the big problem.

All I see in the world are commodity prices breaking north across the board.  Pick one and check the chart: http://finviz.com/futures.ashx .  Nothing has changed on the math that leads to hyperinflation, except it has become even stronger.  Goldman chooses not to accept that.  That is their problem.

Question is, when the Chineese economy "corrects" will the average Chineese citizen holding phyz gold be forced to sell or trade for food ?

Lots of Chineese, not so much food.

Is this the bargaining chip the West is holding out on to get their gold back after the Chineese have been aggressively acquiring over the past few years?

It doesn't matter what they do , it matters if renbinmi loses its value as a currency and in the end people will regard gold as only money which can hold its value. even though some citizens sell their gold for food when they need, next time they make a small saving, they will buy gold again and again and again.

All the world need is the people losing trust in paper currencies, central banks will keep printing and at some point people will stop saving these papers and start buying more and more gold, at that moment it will go up exponentially.. wait and see, patience is the virtue...

The Great Reset will end the dollar´s reserve currency status, and he who has the most physical gold...and that will be the Chinese...gets to set the price.  The COMEX and LBMA will be vaporized once the real fun gets started.  Jim Rickards thinks that the Chinese actually are buying gold to hedge their dollar holdings.  He is way smarter than me, but I´m still thinking that since the Chinese know the dollar is eventually going to be Zimbabwe´d, and their current total debt is around $17 trillion or so (and rising), the only way they can neutralize such an enormus sum is to buy as much gold as possible (while slowly cashing out T-Bills), wrench control of the gold pricing mechanism, and then they will divide their debt amount vs. gold ounces owned...and that will be the new price of gold in renminbi.

We shall see soon enough how the shit storm plays out.

China can easily feed itself, dont forget investments thay have made in Zimbabwe the breadbasket of Africa and in Ukraine farmland where they leased 10 percent of all arable land.  Sure the West screwed them over with the coup, but over half that land sits in Eastern Ukraine.  They have also take Kiev to the World Court for reneging on the contract for the farmland.

There were about 130M people in the US when FDR confiscated. How many of them held gold? A tenth? There are a friggin billion and a half people in China at the moment. Even if only a tenth hold gold currently, that's over a hundred million people. That's a lot of fucking people to go door-to-door and steal from. Draconian laws aside, there's no realistic way to confiscate from that many people without outright concentration camps and total disintegration of 'society' as observed.

"there's no realistic way to confiscate from that many people without outright concentration camps and total disintegration of 'society' as observed."

No way it's gonna happen in China and not enough Americans own a lot of PMs to make it worthwhile.

The Chinese would leave it buried under gardens, pig pens, etc, just like they did with silver and copper. It would remain in the families.

The gov in France sent out the forces to collect gold door to door when their paper collapsed... didn't work well.

Taxation or laws against ownership would create a big black market and smuggling.

Sat, 04/19/2014 - 12:49 | 4675654 giggler321
giggler321's picture

I dont believe they intend a repeat of collections.  Central banks and gov's have all colluded to sell it.

When the time comes for a new currency, if there is no metal left to back it or little in population to collect then what are they going to do?  Simple - produce another fiat without the trouble of involving metals again.  It didn't work last time and this time around they are not going to give it a chance.

If they were forced to sound money again, all the carefully constructed credit and debt society we live in today would have to change, take that option away and poof, next time around can be a copy even if in public they talk about the opposite.

Govts can create new fiats but who would trust their new fiat when it smells still like the old fiat.  What you will have is a shadow economy based on gold. Where payments for many transactions will be conducted in gold or silver etc.

it doesnt matter. If america tries to do a fiat switch it will totally fail to restore confidence anywhere but on the dopey US mainland - and even then only temporarily

if China, russia or anyone else is not given adequate compensation for their labor and resources in the next reset currency, they will refuse to participate in it and go gold/silver instead - and the market will be able to place more faith in them than in the reset fiat currency

you gotta understand, central banks dont WANT to go back to a PM standard - but they will as the least problematic of all alternatives

I understand what you're saying but that wont last either.  They've watered down the metal, take China while they may end up having more or the most metal, divide that up against their own debt and population and you're in the same situation.  At most I see it as a temp backstop for all who have it what little there really is and that excludes the possiblity of wars that would errupt due to not playing the game.

They also excavated an early version of Paris.  Those damn Africans, always stealing American culture.  We oughta bomb their asses back to the Stone Age, just like we did the Romans.

And don't get me started on the Romans, talk about some ungrateful fuckers that completely ripped off Americans.

I think they will take use the old British playbook and sell them opium for gold. This is why the CIA has ramped up poppy cultivation to all time record highs in Afghanistan.

My thoughts on the US (Fed / Ft. Knox) gold is that it still exists but has been transferred to a number of cabal controlled groups. When the CIA ran black ops in Vietnam they set up drug networks in the Golden Triangle. I recall that all of the warlords in Burma sold their opium for gold, jewels and military hardware. They did not take American Express or US fiat. When the reset comes the US puppet masters will be put out of business but the CIA and other cabal entities will just corrupt the next group with gold, inside information, illegal arms, coercion, etc.

I don't know enough about the case to opine intelligently whether Tulving just got overwhelmed by his own bad business practices, or whether he deliberated defrauded his customersd of some $40 million.  At any rate, some time behind bars is indicated, and may actually be inflicted upon the perp, as i doubt Hannes qualifies as TBTF.

A well-publicized trial, conviction and prison sentence may be in the interest of  the anti-PM crowd.  I think the only real lesson here is that when you pay anyone for PM, what you must immediuately receive is metal, not a bill of sale or a receipt.
