Here Come The Boots On The Ground: US Troops Heading To Eastern Europe

Tyler Durden's picture

It seems the truce "deal" is well and truly dead...

  • 600 U.S. TROOPS HEADING TO EUROPE FOR EXERCISES: PENTAGON
  • U.S. AIRBORNE TROOPS GOING TO POLAND, LITHUANIA, LATVIA,ESTONIA
  • U.S. MILITARY EXERCISES ARE IN RESPONSE TO UKRAINE CRISIS:KIRBY
  • MORE MILITARY EXERCISES 'COMING THROUGH' NATO: PENTAGON

The question now, of course, is - what will Putin do in response to this action?

As for where these troops may be arriving from the answer is simple: that other US military intervention success story - Afghanistan. From Reuters:

The number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan may drop well below 10,000 - the minimum demanded by the U.S. military to train Afghan forces - as the longest war in American history winds down, Obama administration officials briefed on the matter say.

Since Afghanistan's general election on April 5, White House, State Department and Pentagon officials have resumed discussions on how many American troops should remain after the current U.S.-led coalition ends its mission this year.

The decision to consider a small force, possibly less than 5,000 U.S. troops, reflects a belief among White House officials that Afghan security forces have evolved into a robust enough force to contain a still-potent Taliban-led insurgency. The small U.S. force that would remain could focus on counter-terrorism or training operations.

That belief, the officials say, is based partly on Afghanistan's surprisingly smooth election, which has won international praise for its high turnout, estimated at 60 percent of 12 million eligible votes, and the failure of Taliban militants to stage high-profile attacks that day.

The Obama administration has been looking at options for a possible residual U.S. force for months.

"The discussion is very much alive," said one U.S. official who asked not to be identified. "They're looking for additional options under 10,000" troops.

There are now about 33,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, down from 100,000 in 2011, when troop numbers peaked a decade into a conflict originally intended to deny al Qaeda sanctuary in Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Of course, it would be peak irony if the next country Russia decides to destabilize is none other than its old "buddy" Afghanistan, which lately appears far more amicable toward the Kremlin than the White House. It certainly would be an additional egg in the face of US foreign policy if Aghaniitan - so critical to the US controlled heroin trade - were to show a return to some of its Taliban roots for which it is so well-known.

Actually most of it goes to Iran which has about the worst heroin addiction rates of any country in the world.  Its also substantial part of the Afganistan GDP.  Win-win for the USA.

Ah yes of course I see...

What about the part they left out about how Russia use to help us with logistics through their own borders for U.S. forces to get to Afghanistan since... Oh lets see now?... If memory serves since the "war on terror" started in 2001???...

Kinda hard to turn your forces on the very Country that has been supporting you with the only protected routes when you've been turned away by everyone else?...

Getting very interesting is putting it mildly!...

I remember having read about it.  It seems like the supply chain going through Russia is one of the longest in the world.

I think Russia understood that Afghanistan would simply be a big waste of ressources for the U-S so they must have been pretty happy to help them dif their own grave.

Just in case they need to go in and liberate east Ukraine, don't forget the 600 body bags. Hope it's just those poor minority types and immigrants looking for citizenship. Mommas send your sons to die, don't even know the reason why. Anyone voluntarily fighting under the treasonous command of US "leadership" is begging for whatever they get.

Half a league, half a league, into the valley of death rode the 600.  This will be the trip wire to reinstitute the draft.  That is where the U.S. troops will eventually come from.

They will offer the young hessians 100K a year to kill patriots. The savages that live in our cities would kill each other to sign up. Already, some enlisted folks make very close to that if they have certain MOS's (drone trigger men/women and nuclear navy people, as just two examples)

There are a LOT of fucked up people willing to kill other people for a few shekels. The systematic destruction of the education system has ensured an ample supply of fools and murderers.

My next door neighbor, a friend and quasi-neocon that I have been trying to de-program for a few years, just sent his only son off to be a bullet stopper infantryman in the US Army. This kid mowed my lawn for years. Ive taken him fishing. I have made it clear to my neighbor that I hold him and his wife and son DIRECTLY responsible for what is occuring and what will occur both in Ukraine and here.

I have very real hatred for these monsters. Pray that they don't succeed. You don't have to pray for their deaths. They are responsible for whatever happens to them. Just pray that they don't succeed.

Going hungry is easier than being shot at and gassed. The 3 percent will lay their lives and treasure on the line to right the ship, just like they did in the 1770s.

Durablefaith - There are games within games. We think in 3D like a pyramid but have built tools refecting our evolution to go one step deeper (quantum computing 4D). Think of chess. Anyways, when elephants dance, ants get trampled. Get out of there way.

Want to think straight and not get overwhelmed or misled? Think conceptually. Concepts are simple. Truth, freedom justice, love. We live in a binary existance so the opposite of those concepts also exist: Lies, injustice hate. We have to deal with that and recognize there reality and hedge accordingly. What laws should be followed? Ones that make sense on the concepts that increase value and quality of life.

Below concepts on the pyramid of thought are issues and below that details. What is 666? Think basic geometry, dimension of 6x6x6 are a pryamid (of monarchy). Nikoli Tesla was obsessed with 3x3x3. Pyramid is how we think but we are nearly evolved past that. In between do what is right and try to enjoy the adventure. We all die someday. Even considering quantum physics and exploring 4d (since we're now punching holes in it) the ego does not seem to be able to be brought with you. That theory can soon be explored.

The existence seems to be birth and rebirth endlessly. Have a little fun and don't live in fear! But do defend against robbers which is part of our evolution. In the end this is what conquest always is about.

God bless peoples of all nations! Nobody can ever fool me again into hate but I will remain wise as a serpent, gentle as a dove - till you rob me too far and then I must exercise the concepts of justice and balance. First, let the robbers kill each other off a bit so there power is diminished. They have no choice, we are made the way we are made. Timing as they say is everything.

Raging Debate - insightful comment on several levels (pun intended).

I am certainly enjoying the adventure. I think homesteading preppers are the ultimate optimists. They know what is going on (lies, injustice, hate, chemtrails, fracking, police state implementation, etc) and still plant gardens and work towards resilienct systems on their (not tax free) land.

As you say, we must choose our path and must live (and quite possiblly die) with the consequences of our choices. No fear here. I take comfort in knowing that a day of reckoning is coming for the evil doers.

An honest question to military folks who serve in our collective forces.

Do any of you lot keep up to date on the current news, and if you do, do you not wonder, question, and ask dissenting questions to your superiors about you as in YOU, having to put your life on the line for THEIR ideals?

Do you never faulter in what these people ask you do in their names?

Its time for the truth my military friends, its way beyond time to lie down your arms in acts of aggresion and look after your collective home lands, meaning enemies DOMESTIC, rather then forgien.

I've never understood this, asking a man to kill for your filthy government, and not in protection of himself?

Here is the answer to your question: If the US war machine learned anything from Vietnam, it was that there was no future in the old system of drafting civilians. They did question things all of the time. After about 1970, many refused to deploy. There were allot of riots and mutanties that were never reported in the press. No, the "citizen soldier" model had to go. They wanted warriors who would not question their superiors, TO NOT THINK, JUST OBEY. That is what they got with their vollunteer services. Willing warriors who were not drafted, but who ask to be there. Don't count on many asking allot of questions besides:"WHEN DO WE ATTACK?"

Speaking from experience I can tell you that the news doesn't matter to these guys and they are brainwashed.  20 year olds don't read the news anyway, they're too busy chasing tail and getting drunk till they puke their brains out.  They are told who the enemy is, what the "enemy" is "doing" and what they must do to stop them, no matter how real or not.  They follow orders, and if they don't they are sent to Leavenworth to make big rocks into small rocks.  They are under contract and that contract will not be breeched.

Shit, the media has half the country convinced the Russians are trying to take over Eurasia.  How hard is it for commanders to convince soldiers.

Speak for yourself not for 'These Guys'.

You know ho heart but your own.

What you are saying is true for some Police Officers and a few Soldiers.

My PERSONAL EXPERIENCE is that most rank-and-file will WANT to believe the propaganda, for to believe it is untrue is to believe that you've sold your soul. But FEW would do what you say they would, and then only up to the point where they could see what it was.  Propaganda is no shield before a hail of bullets or the all-encompassing fear that generally accompanies them.

Your brainwashing theory is propaganda and not born out by real life experience.  If what you said was true, you would never have heard of Abu Ghraib or the other abuses.

Rather, you have heard of them because what you say is not true, because some '20-year-old Private' had the courage to speak out.  Look at Bradley Manning!

Only a tiny, tiny percentage have psychopathic tendencies.  Higher ranks will be more capable of detachment from the moral dimensions of their activities, some from ambition, others from blindness born of long committment to the Service.

REGARDLESS, the Armed Forces overwhelmingly chose RON PAUL and the ideas for which he stands.  That's on record both in absentee ballots from two elections and in every poll.  That is direct counter evidence to your 'brainwashed' theory.

Good points all.  It's been awhile since I was in.  Back then, when there was still a wall, we only had the stars and stripes.  I suppose times have changed.  Hopefully more are in tune as you say.  Your last point says a lot.

Yes, look at Bradley Manning.  How's he doing? How many others have followed suit?

Abu Ghraib happened because the soldiers were treating the "enemy" like dirt.  Because Iraqis are our enemies right? There's that patriotic idealism again, serving the purpose of our masters.  You see, they were brainwashed into thinking the Iraqis were our enemies.  Reality says otherwise.

I did not imply that they are psychopathic, nor do I think they are.  The are only young, dumb, and full of cum.

Now chant after me:

WE LIKE IT! WE LOVE IT! WE WANT MORE OF IT! GIVE US MORE DRILL SEARGENT, GIVE US MORE!

WE LIKE IT! WE LOVE IT! WE WANT MORE OF IT! GIVE US MORE DRILL SEARGENT, GIVE US MORE!

they are taught how to 'respond' in any particular situation the army has trained them to.

one of the reasons why vietnam caused so much anguish, those boys hadn't been taught to deal with what they came up against, they had been taught how to 'respond' to

what you and i (untrained) would see has horrors, but they were presented other horrors and couldn't deal with it.  (and wanted out).

sending US troops to pretty much anywhere else in the world right now would be a token gesture...

sending airborne operators to eastern Europe in a time of extremely heightened tensions is not a token gesture in any sense of the term.

it is a blatant and intentional escalation.

it's not just about the troops or the numbers it's about what they are bringing with them and what, exactly their mandate, their mission is.

the only way to guarantee their will never be an engagement is for one side or the other or both to not be in such proximity that makes an engagement possible in the first place.

once you cross that rubicon conflict becomes not only possible, many times more likely.

in my humble opinion, all bets are off now.

Where have I seen this movie before.......thats right, back in the early 60s, when the gubmint sent into Vietnam "a small number of advisors", so as to not arouse public suspicion. This is the way it is done; you send in several hundred, then several thousand, then tens of thousands, then, before you know it, there are hundreds of thousands of our young men {and women} going into the meat grinder. How many divisions and air wings does the US have in europe right now? Hopefully, all this is, is to bolster the courage of the Baltic States and Poland. But I fear something far worse is in the cards. The key two nations to watch in all of this are Germany and Turkey. Their support for any war is crucial. Your heads up, is if Turkey were to close the Bosphorous Straights to Russian naval vessals. If that happens, expect things to go hot in a matter of days. If people don't get off of their ass and take to the streets over this, there will be a mushroom cloud over all of us before Christmas. These SOBs think they can do "crisis management" and keep things from going nuclear, but they are fools. Once one side sees they are losing a conventional war, they launch tactical nukes on the battlefield. Then they get tit for tat, it would escalate to strategic nukes in short order. A combination of fools and sociopaths are dictating US policy right now. Never thought I would say it, but Jimmy Carter looks like a first rate statesman compared to what we have now.

"How many divisions and air wings does the US have in europe right now?"

ZERO.

That's right.  ZERO Divisions in Europe.

But there separrate Brigades there that are almost enough to compose one division.

You can see them here:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b1/US_Army_Europe_OrBat...

The 600 paratroopers are almost certainly one of the battalions of the 173d Airborne BDE.

Here is where all the Army's Divisions are located:
http://www.army.mil/info/organization/unitsandcommands/divisions/

How many wings?  Irrelevant.  Wings move fast.  They fly, even.

But the infrastructure to support them is here:

I seriously doubt that the US has zero divisions in europe, as they are the leader of NATO. To believe otherwise is the height of stupidity. And air wings are irrelevant? Since when? It is vital to have them already in place, in advance of hostilities. I would say we have several of each in europe. And yes, it is the 173rd going into the Baltics. At least you got that much right.

Why should American boys and girls put their lives at risk for a neo-Nazi regime in Kiev, which reveres those who fought with Hitler and murdered 30,000,000 Russians, Ukrainians in World War 2?

Kiev Nazi regime members have called for the extermination of Russians and pro-Russian Ukrainians.

Why should American service members be fighting FOR a Nazi regime?  Latvia holds SS veteran marches every year, with actual SS members participating.  This is what the US is "fighting for" now?  Morphing into a Nazi Fascist state.

the only race based hatred in ukraine that is relevant to discuss on the topic of this conflict is ukraine's hatred against those lying dickhead russians. anyone who knows history understands that hatred is completely justified and would sympathize with ukrainians. first occupied and then experienced genocide by the hands of the soviets/russians, the holodomor took the lives of 7 million+ ukrainians. there are still a few living in ukraine that remember 1933 who i'm sure are now experiencing deja vu as once again those bastard russians move in on them again.

get it? russia targeted ukraine, russian's are the racists, ukraine only targets russians in a hope to prevent a second genocide/occupation. if the russians fucked off and stopped the ukraine bullshit there would be no 'neo-nazi regime' in ukraine (not that there even is now).

and as for your remark about what the US is fighting for,.. if the US/world does not intervene and allow the russian's to steamroll ukraine,.. again,.... it would be like allowing a second rwanda to happen.

Ignorant post...Russians and Kazaks were subjected to same depredations.

From 1917 thru Stalin was never a Russian construct. Russians were never in control.

"You must understand. The leading Bolsheviks who took over Russia were not Russians. They hated Russians.

They hated Christians. Driven by ethnic hatred they tortured and slaughtered millions of Russians without a shred of human remorse....

More of my countrymen suffered horrific crimes at their bloodstained hands than any people or nation ever suffered

in the entirety of human history.

It cannot be overstated. Bolshevism committed the greatest human slaughter of all time.

The fact that most of the world is ignorant and uncaring about this enormous crime is proof that the global media is

Volkodav & nje,

You are both right.   Many of the leading bolsheviks were not ethnically Russian.  But many were.  But Russians did make up the bulk of the Commisars that carried out the Holomodor.

That's a lot of hatred even before you get to WWII, where again Ukraine was split, not so much between Nazis and Soviets as between Soviets and anyone who wasn't Soviet.  Ukrainian dissatisfaction with Moscow goes all the way back to when the center of the Rus transfered from Kiev to Moscow.

REGARDLESS, AS CAN BE SEEN FROM THIS TIT-FOR-TAT HISTORY, doing with Armies what you cannot do with Propaganda backfires in the end.

It includes 600 paratroopers consisding of a Commander (LTC), an Operations Officer (MAJ), several lieutenants and captains in the staff and an assortment of enlisted personnel.  Then there would be three or four companies of about 130  Airborne Infantrymen, a total 6-8 60mm mortars along with the men to man them (about 25) , a platoon of scouts (about 30 scouts), a support platoon (about 25 soldiers).

Main weapons systems would be upto 4 81mm Mortars, 6 to 8 60 mm mortars, at least four sniper rifles, about 25 M249 Squad Automatic Weapons, about 12 M240G machine guns, about 600 M4 carbines, and about 30 M9 9mm pistols,

The letter makes reference to president Putin's proposal to establish an economic community stretching "from Lisbon to Vladivostok".

Any guesses about who is the big proponent for an "Armed Forces of The European Union"?

Let's think here for a second...  Which EU country has a world famous heavy industry that would thristily drink up the resulting armaments orders?

What political obstacles would they see between themselves and their pot-of-gold?

Who is behind the European Pipeline Consortium, along whose current and proposed pipeline routes all the recent revolutions and civil wars have occurred?

What companies make up the Consortium?

Who stands to benefit from more large suppliers of energy to Europe rather than fewer - and mostly Russia?

Is that the US? Or is it someone else?  (The answers are all in the public domain and easy to locate on the internet).

600 troops is barely a paliative to the Baltic States.

If the administratoin were serious they would announce a new round of REFORGER (REturn of FORces to GERmany - RE-FOR-GER) exercises - the first ones in 25 years - and they would move the prepositioned stocks of Tanks and APCs to Europe (whether floating stocks or to nearly-empty US bases).

The announcement that would tell the Russians that NATO is serious would occur as gigantic shipping orders to move literal mountains of equipment to Europe.

Reconnaissance and Special Forces tell  you what courses of action the other side is EXPLORING, but their logistical movements will tell you what they are really doing.

Right now both say that the US is doing little other than a little spy-vs-spy, despite the propaganda in Russia.

Ukraine Orders New Military Operation in the East KIEV, Ukraine April 23, 2014 (AP) By NEDRA PICKLER and MARIA DANILOVA Associated Press Acting president ordered security forces to resume operations in the country's east on Tuesday after the bodies of two people allegedly abducted by pro-Russia insurgents were found and a military aircraft was reportedly hit by gunfire.

The developments — just hours after U.S. Vice President Joe Biden left the Ukrainian capital — raised fears that last week's international agreement on easing Ukraine's crisis was unraveling.

Brzezinski writes:

“But it is on the globe’s most important playing field – Eurasia – that a potential rival to America might at some point arise. This focusing on the key players and properly assessing the terrain has to be a point of departure for the formulation of American geostrategy for the long-term management of America’s Eurasian geopolitical interests.”

http://www.globalresearch.ca/the-elite-the-great-game-and-world-war-iii/...

"The control of the US, and of global politics, by the wealthiest families of the planet is exercised in a powerful, profound and clandestine manner. This control began in Europe and has a continuity that can be traced back to the time when the bankers discovered it was more profitable to give loans to governments than to needy individuals.

These banking families and their subservient beneficiaries have come to own most major businesses over the two centuries during which they have secretly and increasingly organised themselves as controllers of governments worldwide and as arbiters of war and peace.

Unless we understand this we will be unable to understand the real reasons for the two world wars and the impending Third World War, a war that is almost certain to begin as a consequence of the US attempt to seize and control Central Asia. The only way out is for the US to back off – something the people of the US and the world want, but the elite does not."

Anybody counted how many body bags and trillions this constant support to corrupt regimes has costed past hundred years?

600 troops even if they are great soldiers are just sacrificial lambs without air support, armor, and artillery. They can not be supported logistically. They can not even form a defensible perimeter. In the event of open warfare they would be wiped out in less than 48 hours. Decisions by morons that have never seen combat. Any "show" of force must be overwhelming. Chest puffing and strutting are just foolish.

I am old enough to remember when US troops in Somalia requested armor support for their mission - and were denied by SecDef Les Aspin.  American soldiers were needlessly killed as a result of his decision.

Thank God old Les is dead and in Hell now, where he rightly belongs.

600 - against a vast Russian land army?  That's eerily reminiscent of the Charge of the Light Brigade, who rode up a valley against 20 Russian divisions (plus artillery) in the Crimea nearly 160 years ago - with predicatable results.

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Charge for the guns!" he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

"Forward, the Light Brigade!"
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Someone had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Let's just hope history doesn't rhyme.
