Russia Warns West "Remove Forces"; Begins Military Exercise On Ukraine Border

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE: Dutch fighter jets were scrambled after Russian bombers approached Dutch airspace; the Russian planes turned away

With both sides appearing to have entirely un-de-escalated and the truce deal now a thing of the past (besides a few hundred Dow points), the Russians are speaking up today - and are not happy:

  • RUSSIA IS EXTREMELY SURPRISED BY KIEV AND WASHINGTON'S "DISTORTED" INTERPRETATION OF AGREEMENT REACHED IN GENEVA LAST WEEK ON DE-ESCALATION OF UKRAINE CRISIS - FOREIGN MINISTRY
  • RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY SAYS KIEV AND WASHINGTON "CLOSING THEIR EYES" TO PROVOCATIVE ACTIONS BY NATIONALIST FORCES IN UKRAINE

And, on the heels of Turchynov's official restart of the so-called anti-terrorist operation, Russia is calling on Ukraine to pull back military from Ukraine's southeast... and rattles its sabre by undertaking a military exercise on the border.

Bloomberg reports,

Russia is surprised by distorted interpretation of Geneva accord from govts of Ukraine, U.S., RIA Novosti reports, citing Russia’s Foreign Ministry.

*RUSSIA CALLS ON UKRAINE TO REMOVE MILITARY FROM SOUTHEAST: RIA

Russia says Ukraine, U.S. closing eyes to provocations by right-wing extremists: RIA

Russia still believes partners are serious about resolving crisis in Ukraine: RIA

and in addition

  • RUSSIAN MILITARY CONDUCTS MILITARY EXERCISE IN ROSTOV REGION, BORDERING UKRAINE - DEFENCE MINISTRY OFFICIAL

All of this sets the scene for an important set of meetings next week...

Russia ready to host EU, Ukraine energy officials in Moscow or consider other cities for talks, Russian Energy Ministry spokeswoman Olga Golant says by phone.

Golant confirms EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger invited Russia to gas talks

Slovakia planning talks on use of gas pipeline in reverse to supply Ukraine on Apr. 28 in Bratislava, Eustream pipeline operator spokesman Vahram Chuguryan says by phone

So to sum it all up:

  1. The truce deal is dead
  2. Russia blames Ukraine/West for breaking deal and misunderstanding it
  3. Ukraine/West blame Russia for not unilaterally pulling back its forces
  4. Russia is warning Ukraine to pullback military from Russia-held southeast Ukraine ("or there will be retaliation")
  5. Russia is rattling its sabre by military exercises on the Ukraine border (after US sends another warship into the Black Sea)
  6. Against all this tension, gas pipeline talks are set to begin shortly.

Still buying the fucking dip on the back of Ukraine 'calming down'?

Find the sentiment above quite sad. I wonder if all these keyboard warriors have seen blood spilt. Forget on the scale of a war.

The above keyboard warriors are nothing to worry about.  There comes a time when words don't mean much.  Watch the actions.

Having the Americans move into Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania is expected.  Europe won't do anything unless the Russians move first.  Any way you look at it, it is expected NATO will be strengthened over all of this.

ORI, I usually enjoy your posts but I think you are the one being naive.  The US military has been responsible for many atrocities over the decades and will continue spilling blood until it is stopped, either via dollar collapse or outright confrontation.  The dollar collapse has already been set in motion, most empires go out with a bang rather than a whimper.

813, could not agree more.

But every day that passes with-out that all out confrontation is another day, perhaps the 98th Monkey awoke today.

Without that potential of cirtical mass awakening, we might as well roll over collectively, if not necessarily individually.

There has been a mass awakening around the world, unfortunately only those outside the US propaganda bubble got the message.  It is easier now to get information than at any other point in world history, but from my observations the sheep are more interested in grazing on bad teevee and cheap plastic shit.

The sheep in the US have been asleep for 50+ years as their empire has amassed the largest military apparatus in world history.  I wouldn't hold my breath on change in the US until the EBT cards quit flowing.

I was super fortunate to have spent 1995 through 2007 in the US....what a time I had...but I was hanging with the weirdoes in San Francisco and Marin.

But I left when I felt the system beginning to crak and groan post 9/11

And like I had said earlier, I had wild and heated discussions with Doctors in Kentucky (after 4 long island iced teas, I was a drinker then), and hedge fundies and VCs in the Valley....telling me to go home for being anti-war. For being ungrateful.

Educated people, "normal" people.

Very interesting how the mood changed after 9/11....fear factor....

The New York Tmes lying us into a war again as they did with Judith Miller's lies to get us into a war with Iraq:

New York Times propaganda photos on Ukraine exposed

By Alex Lantier
23 April 2014

A day after the New York Times published a front-page report purporting to show the involvement of Russian Special Forces in protests in east Ukraine, its report, titled “Photos Link Masked Men in East Ukraine to Russia,” has been exposed as a blatant fabrication.

The Times printed low-resolution pictures of fighters—allegedly wearing Russian insignia while in Georgia, and then later as protesters in east Ukraine—asserting they were the same men, thus proving the existence of an armed Russian intervention in Ukraine. It was based on a crude trick first noted by a commenter on a link posted on Reddit. The photos in the Times were down-sampled versions of higher-resolution images circulating online, which show that the men in the different pictures are in fact not the same.

It very rapidly became clear that the Times ’ claims to have proven that Russian soldiers were driving the east Ukraine protests against the pro-Western regime in Kiev were complete rubbish.

You've clearly never been to Russia - or weren't paying attention if you did.

Most of the Russian Army consistes of conscripts who have a 2-year obligation to serve.  Conscripts simply don't have time to develop much in the way of Soldier skills before the end of the 2 years.

The careerists in the Russian Army - and in particular certain units - are as good as the best troops anywhere.

The US Army uses volunteers (which makes it much easier to get them to do things, means you don't have to march them in formation, keep them in collective barracks, and otherwise watch them closely 24-7 to prevent them from going AWOL to get home).  And the US Army has longer enlistment periods, and generally older, more mature soldiers - all of which equates to a higher general level of skill.

All of that is before you get to the equipement.  Both countries make excellent equipment.  In the US everyone gets it.  In Russia, only the professional units get it.  The conscripts are equipped to be cannon-fodder.

But if you are talking about a mass-invasion of entire populations of each country versus the entire population of the other:

-Russians are generally better educated, more urban, almost totally unfamiliar with real (combat) firearms, and it is illegal for them to own personal weapons other than registered bolt-action hunting type weapons.

-Americans are generally somewhat more poorly educated, more sub-urban or even rural, with A FAMOUSLY WIDE AND DEEP FASCINATION with firearms, and it is illegal to restrict them from buying firearms or ammunition, which they do in quantities greater than the rest of the world combined.

- Oh, and this tidbit, Russians are far better prepared for combat in low-temperature terrain.  Americans are far more prepared to deal with the hazards of high temperature terrain. - So it depends on where this theoretical clash were to take place.  You can make your own guesses as to whether more Americans would suffer frostbite or more Russians suffer heat-exhaustion.

Finally - it is a stupid proposition.  There are 145 Million - or so - Russians in Russia, and millions of ethnically Russian Americans.

Furthermore, despite the obvious antagonisms of the US and Russian governments, the US is the only first world country to have never participated in an invasion of Russia.  The populations (as opposed to the governments) should be naturally pre-disposed to being friends, not enemies.

Wrong.

At the end of WWI the US and British landed troops in the area of the White Sea (around Archangel, Murmansk) and used this expeditionary force in an attempt to suppress the Bolshevik uprising in Russia and to support the "White Russian" movement which was pro Tsar.

"Russia ready to host EU, Ukraine energy officials in Moscow or consider other cities for talks"

This is the key to understanding the whole press release.  It means that:

A) Russia understands now that the EU, and not really the US per se, is its opposite party in the Ukraine.

B) Russia is acknowledging that the whole situation is being generated by Energy-Based Geopolitics.

C) Russia is expressing a preference that the Europeans represent their own interests directly, rather than through the US per the post-WWII order.

* It should be noted that C also will result in the fall of the Petro Dollar, and increased risks of conflict in Europe in the future generally, because in a post-US Europe the warmaking authority will lie closer to any potential casus belli.

To be fair, there' aren't a lot of those same people who fought 70% of the battles left.  In 2005 they invited them to the Kremlin to meet Putin, gave them a bottle of Vodka and a certificate.  The room was largely empty, because there aren't many left.

Also to be fair, Russia was being invaded.  Its whole population was fighting.  The US had a much lower level of committment, and widely opposed taking sides in the war in the first place.

Russians who propagandize that 140 million Russians could deal with 320 milliion heavily-personnally-armed americans in the same way that they dealt with 60 million Germans for whom it was illegal to be armed...well, that's plainly a fantasy.  The ocean's for one thing would make it much harder for Russia.

The only option would be nukes.  But others in this world also have nukes.  Both societies would be destroyed.  And for what? Bragging rights?

I guess this is what China is hoping for, to rebuild the Mongol Empire only ruled by Han Chinese.  Even if they don't hope for it, they would be the beneficiaries - meaning that it would hurt them least.

Save your breath. There are no winners to be had - only degrees of loss.

Have been around for fifty years is right. Our ADC F-106 fighter squadron escorted a "Bear" we picked up over the Atlantic Ocean into our airspace, where it made an emergency landing at McGuire AFB in NY back in the 1960's. You won't find any reports on it anywhere though. In those days we carried nuclear rockets along with infra red and radar seeking missiles. The public had fought against installing ABM systems in and around cities. Didn't want anything to do with nukes. Little did they know nukes were already standard equipment on our fighters.
