Las Vegas, NV – Nevada Senator Harry Reid released the following statement today on racist comments by Cliven Bundy reported by the New York Times.
“I used to live in North Las Vegas and it is home to some of the hardest-working people I have ever met – men and women who embody the American dream by working hard every day to build a better life for themselves and their families. By contrast, Cliven Bundy has spent decades profiting off government land while refusing to pay the same fair use fees as his fellow ranchers. Today, Bundy revealed himself to be a hateful racist. But by denigrating people who work hard and play by the rules while he mooches off public land he also revealed himself to be a hypocrite.
“To advance his extreme, hateful views, Bundy has endangered the lives of innocent women and children. This is not a game. It is the height of irresponsibility for any individual or entity in a position of power or influence to glorify or romanticize such a dangerous individual, and anyone who has done so should come to their senses and immediately condemn Bundy. For their part, national Republican leaders could help show a united front against this kind of hateful, dangerous extremism by publicly condemning Bundy.
“The bottom line is that elected officials and those in positions of power or influence have a responsibility to unite behind the basic principle that we are a country of laws, and that whatever our differences, it is unacceptable for individuals to use violence or the threat of violence to advance their radical views.”

This is way too convenient for me to believe that this was not set up on Bundy. In fact I'd guess ole Chinaman Harry Reid had the speech prepared before the NYT's even showed up. I read Bundy's remarks as asking whether or not Blacks were better off as slaves than under government subsidies, with no jobs, prison, etc. In other words, living under the government's boot is the worst form of slavery there is, since one is deprived of their dignity.

This is about who should control and manage land. Cliven Bundy's personal opinions pertaining to any other issue are an irrelevancy. His comments weren't even racist anyway. Lastly, I was curious about the context of Bundy's comments, so I listed to the first 25 minutes of the whole 67 minute video. The 1.5 minutes we've seen start at around 17 minutes in there--I had a friend of mine at the ranch filming this very discussion by the way-- within the context of the whole video it seems he is arguing that blacks have never truly been free, that they had stronger family units and sense of self when in the past than what they have now. Bundy is referring to the period of slavery--I would refer to the period up to 1965.

I listened to Bundy interview also on Infowars and he in no way intended to be racist. Sometimes the opinings of an older rural farmer are not quite politically correct. He generally is/was concerned about the existence of black people today under govt. programs. Everyone wants to suggest he means go pick cotton but that is not his intent. At 69 years old next Monday I can actually remember when politicians strove to try to get respect for themselves and their office. In times gone by our elected officials used verbal restraint in their pen and tongue as expected of a leader.
Many on both sides of the isle today have taken the name of office for “President”, “Senator” and “Representative” to new lows in respect. These elected officials use political speeches and written responses that are filled with name calling, blame, lies, deceit and fowl language that a third-grader would be proud to use.
Today’s officials have forgotten that elected officials long ago in these offices were once called “leaders” and received respect everywhere they went throughout their lives because they conducted themselves well. So it is no wonder we ridicule our officials today and give them an approval rating of less than 10%.
