RIP Diplomacy: Merkel Says Geneva Accord Has Failed; G-7 Preparing Action Against Russia
Last Thursday, when to much fanfare, the latest diplomatic iteration of the Ukraine "de-escalation", i.e., the Geneva Accord, was revealed, we said "Everyone knows that the half-life of these pointless diplomatic summits aimed at "de-escalating" geopolitical tensions is measured in days if not hours..." Looks like many did not know. So moments ago Angela Merkel finally explained it for them, and even the slowst algos:
- MERKEL SAYS GENEVA ACCORD PROCESS HAS FAILED
During discussions with Vladimir Putin today, Merkel said Russia had a chance to convince Ukraine separatists to back down but "that chance has now gone."Perhaps even more concerning is her concluding remark that:
- MERKEL SAYS JOINT G-7 ACTION AGAINST RUSSIA NOW BEING PREPARED
.... To be followed shortly thereafter by the Russian "scorched earth" response to NATO we discussed earlier?

No surprise here, the G7 is playing out their game as planned. Sanctions are an act of war and consequences will follow.
BTW, I got a good belly laugh watching Horseface Kerry dissing RT, and I noticed that the Guardian published an article by a neoclown demanding RT be censored in the name of public morality. Good move Kerry, you just boosted RT's viewership.
The USSA/EU must be losing the information war.
Besides Russia, who are the other major sources of Oil/Nat Gas to Europe? Expect Russia to kill those sources.
Yes- Expect to see a few 'key' pipelines have some significant (man made) problems shortly.
Time for Merkel to don that spikey wig and chain mail dress so we can play this out properly.
Who runs Bartertown? Come on Angela, a bit louder?
pods
Merkelberkel run barter town!
RIP Soros: You're right. Germany is brought in line.
Norway mostly. Lots of oil and gas in the North Sea.
Russia should just cut the gas to Europe, and make it a minimum one year gap.
Then let's see if the west develops any sort of appreciation for actual diplomacy, honoring prior committments and perhaps even, from time to time, minding its own business.
What seems to be missing from the conversation is Germany is announcing their THIRD war. So no one should be surprised...it's Germany making the announcement again. Which means they should be 'helping' Poland, Holland and France really soon.
Just thought I would point out that we've all seen this script before.
Uprisings in Saudi Arabia and Qatar seem probable.
Holy hell is that Anthony's bunny from the Twilight zone movie? That thing scared the bajeebus out of me when I was young.
Correct, going to be interesting to see how your average 'merican handles $8.00-$10.00 per gallon gasoline.
My GMO powered recumbent trike just doubled in value. If interested, I will only take gold or yuan.
So petrol at £1.39 per litre? Been there, seen that in Britain...
Look for a big "educational" push to move to the metric system in the U.S.S.A. in 3...2...1...
You may be on to something there. Kinda like how a 5 pound bag of sugar is now a 4 pound bag of sugar, but costs about the same.
Sanctions are NOT an act of war. You are thinking of a blockade.
Not completely clear to me but I'm not an expert on international law. I still upvoted you as 11 reds (and counting) seems excessive.
.
Blockade
"A blockade is an effort to cut off food, supplies, war material or communications from a particular area by force, either in part or totally. A blockade should not be confused with an embargo or sanctions, which are legal barriers to trade..."
Economic sanctions are an act of war – Ron Paul
'SS: Now, you yourself have called sanctions an “act of war,” and unilateral sanctions are a common tool for the West to pressure other nations, so…The US is at war with many countries, like Iran, Cuba – isn’t it?
Ron Paul: What if China or Russia, or somebody came in and said: “You cannot import certain things, we’re going to prohibit you from trading?” The American people wouldn’t like that very much, and yet we too causally do that with others. But, in principle, it’s not quite like a shooting war, but it is a war...'
Let's keep clarity and perspective, shall we? The TRUE beneficiary of all this is the Fed (its USD, USTs), insofar they are trying to delay its demise by doing the only thing that's left to them now: War!
Unfortunately for the political fools and lackeys in the EU, it is Europe that's going to feel the pain and "pay the price" (pun intended) of this American war-by-proxy.
Keep packing, racking and stacking. Gold bullion is on sale in the Blue Light Special. For now.
"No surprise here, the G7 is playing out their game as planned. "
I'll admit I am a little surprised. I was expecting Europe to come to its senses and realize their gas supply is ultimately threatened by US actions and tell the US to get stuffed.
Thats what I get for listening to Paul Craig Roberts I guess.
Summer is coming so Southern Europe can afford to be a little chilly with no heat. As for electricity, maybe they better rethink those Green Energy plants. So what if it isn't economically viable, got to teach those Ruskies a lesson. Plus with the Fed Taper, they can just take that "savings" and loan it to the ECB, and the ECB can start to ramp up it's own QE. Money isn't the problem when it's printed. Russia would be smart to announce "maintenance" downtime on their pipelines to Europe as soon as the West tries more sanctions. Russia will have to tighten their belt this summer with fewer gas rubles, but the worm will turn to their favor in the fall and winter. The West economies should be reeling by that time from all the increased costs.
Pardon the queue jumping but there is a meme downthread that needs to be debunked preemptively. Merkel is not being booga booga blackmailed by cloak and dagger James Bond wannabees as if she were an independent enity. Merkel/Hitler is just another Illuminati creation like Obama/Soetero, like Cliton/Rockefeller, like BoyGeorge/Crowley etc. They are all Manchurian mind controled muppets, Let´s raise the bar of political sophistication here at ZH, please.
For the doubting Tylers out there peruse this montage,

At least we know who is the leader of the West now.
The NSA must have some really nasty shit on Germany's
chancellor.
Frankfurt ,and the biz community will not be happy.
It's pretty clear there needs to be some permanent leadership changes made with regards to gender..
Oh well. Maybe on another planet in another life.
I had much respect for Merkel until this whole scene erupted. Oh, were you talking about the O-man?
That almost sounded plausible until I thought about the choices it leaves us. Talk about cognitive dissonance.
Turn off the gas and dump the Dollar! That will teach the G7.
No, that would be heartless. Better to just up the price 300%.
Awwww......isn't that cute.
And in response Putin announces the launch of a new Eurasion "gold" currency- the altyn.
http://www.silverdoctors.com/introducing-the-altyn-russia-accelerates-pl...
Linky no worky.
Sanctions over what, NATO's right to subvert the Ukraine government?
Important: One thing ZHers have picked up on is the incredible level of propaganda in the world. Avoid reacting emotionally to unconfirmed information. Particularly information that may confirm one's normal bias, which is the most effective propaganda.
Operation Barbarosa with wool mittens this time. NSA must have some good shit on Merkel. How many times must Europe learn not to poke a stick at the Russian bear.
i am sure putin was expecting this
"i am sure putin was expecting this"
I doubt it. Merkle and Putin had a close relationship for a long time. Even if they didn't, Putin would not expect a German leader (excepting Hitler) to go against the wishes of so many CEOs of large German companys; ie, let the gas/oil flow continue.
I suspect someone has some dirt on Merkle that she doesn't want in the public domain.
She must be under immense pressure from some source to turn on Putin.
Your last sentence says it all. Germany has to be being pulled in two directions at once. What will really matter is not the conjecture but what actions are taken... and how they play out. There is no reason to believe that Merkle (or anyone else) isn't maintaining a seperate dialogue with Putin... and probably outside of NSA surveillance now that said cat is out of the bag (and Snowden is in Russian hands).
If the German Foreign minister makes a sudden trip to Moscow,
a la Ribbentrop,I for one would not be surprised.
Hey Dawgs,
Winston hit it on the head . . .
In fact, the Germans and Russians will become ALLIES within the next 1-2 years and simply impose that age-old facist/socialist empire on all of Europe.
Ooppss, except for France . . .
France has the Great Catholic Monarch, and he will kick ass on shall we say a royal-scale?
long monarchies . . .
"France has the Great Catholic Monarch"
I didn't know the Pope's inside man, Tony Blair, moved to France.
" There is no reason to believe that Merkle (or anyone else) isn't maintaining a seperate dialogue with Putin..." Right, I would bet the farm on this.
One possibility... This will play out like Georgia. Except, now US is trying to involve NATO/EU in fighting Russia prior to pulling a disappearing act.
US has already assured fools in Kiev that US has their back (as happened in Georgia). Now US trying to convince NATO/EU that US is totally committed to action against Russia... prior to US pulling a disappearing act.
A fair analysis Snidley, the question is how will the rest of the NATO members handle "sharing Germany's pain" as it were.
In particular, should additional sanctions actually have any real bite I wonder how the average 'merican will handle $8.00-$10.00 per gallon gasoline?
No might be a good time to push switching to the metric system again, in 3...2...1...
LoP...
Fed/US has been encouraging EU to print, print, print... But, EU has not been printing enough to satisfy the Fed/US.
Maybe Ukraine is simply a pawn in a much bigger game?
...and NSA makes Hoover look like a piker.
Solid thinking IMO SW.
The stigma of previous world wars still looms in many ways - especially in Germany.
Plus, the EU has no common debt, so they can't just print. And if they could, Merkle would clearly object anyhow.
If I were Merkel I certainly wouldn't go against NATO until it matters.
I got Herr_________(insert German Leaders name) signature right here on this piece of paper....
Until the IMF pushes for an outright Euro print fest.
<-- that bitch got nothin'
<-- fuck the eu
"We're the Ones we've been waiting for..."

Cut off the fuckin tap Vladi....
west lossing finance war, so they need to escalating kinetic war coz diplomatic are in wekeer position
and all saction blow them in there face
putin even minted a silver coin with his face on and crimea. Must be simbolic
Meanwhile, top news on "Der Spiegel" online in Germany is that Putin is "ruining" Russias IT sector such as Yandex and VK.com
http://www.spiegel.de/netzwelt/netzpolitik/russlands-internet-putin-gegen-it-firmen-wie-yandex-und-vk-com-a-966088.html
That's what I call priorities!
LOL ruining social media is GOOD. Do you want a fertile ground for Soros and CIA NGOs to sprout in.
Really what value to an economy does social media offer. Think about FACECRAP and its Suckleberg feeding off the NSA TITS
FaceCrap and TwitterDum- a marriage of the Hula-Hoop and the old 3rd party telephone lines. Worthless gossip abounds.
Trending, trending.... not trending, not trending.
So when does the G& become the G3.....as soon as next winter hits I bet
Why is the DOW down and gold up? I thought talk of war was bullish for stocks, and that gold always goes down on all days that end with "y"?
Finance is a gun.
Politics is knowing when to pull the trigger
-Mario Puzo, Godfather III
(Clearly a book Angela Merkel has never read because I think she was just looking down the barrel when she put her finger on the trigger)
Yes. And sanctions are the equivalent of carpet bombing.
She may wake up with a horse-faced head at the foot of her bed
She reminds me of Herman Goering. A not so strongly established GENDER identity, a little corpulence, lots of flatulence, and with a typically twisted and perverted KRAUT gleam in her eye.
Look everyone a new Russian troll. FREE KONIGSBERG!!
Kerry ?
Sorry, couldn't resist....
"She may wake up with a horse-faced head at the foot of her bed"
John Kerry ? From Russia with Love.
And "War is politics by other means" -Carl von Clausewitz
So, what will THIS do to the price of precious metals???
metals are now in a bottoming phase.
"During discussions with Vladimir Putin today, Merkel said Russia had a chance to convince Ukraine separatists to back down"
Merkel is starting to sound like a neo con. She is going against the wishes of most CEOs of German companys who are in favor of continuing gas/oil flow to Germany from Russia (previous article on ZH).
Doe's the NSA have some real dirt on her? She was the most pissed of any European leader when she found that all her com was being monitored.
They found out that she regularly buys lots of peanut butter and that her cats love licking peanut butter.
(you can take that one wherever you would like, common decency forbids me to elaborate)
pods
" peanut butter "
It could be that simple.
It would be irresponsible not to speculate.
Nah she is just following what is in her Lebensraum genes, dont forget her relatives were in Ukraine not too long ago sanitizing the place for Ersatz Deutschland
They just wanted the wheat, you know the stuff Uncle Joe starved them of a few years earlier.
"dont forget her relatives were in Ukraine not too long ago sanitizing the place for Ersatz Deutschland"
Actually the Ukraine/Southern Russia had a large Germanic population that the Nazis stupidly failed to accomodate.
It's warmer now, they'll hardly notice the missing Russian gas as long as they put on a sweater. It does seem strange, though, that the western political class is unable to see the difference between say Libya or Syria, and Russia.
I've vivid memories of sitting in Frankfurt airport in December 2010 during freezing weather waiting for my flight.
Merkel better hope that we have mild winters from here on in.
JUST A SURVEY !
Arrow up if you think Russian forces will enter Ukraine under their own flag .
Arrow down if don't see this happening
No need when you can run a strong counterinsurgency campaign when the locals are on your side. A few RPG and shoulder fired missiles take care of the armored calvary. A few IEDs to demoralize the convoys and you have a stalemate.
Well, it's getting scarry now to be honest.
What's the game here? Are we really going to war with Russia?????
"Are we really going to war with Russia?????"
Can NATO win a conventional ground war against Russia?
Lots of people have tried and failed... but early spring is the right time to launch such a venture... if some are crazy enough to try it.
It is scary
Who fights conventional ground wars any more?
The Germans had Moscow in their grasp but Hitler FORCED them to turn South to Ukraine for wheat of all things. The weather was so wet that they made slow and costly progress to that end. By the time they returned to Moscow the weather came on and stopped the advance. So all you can really say is that the weather in Russia will shove it up your ass whether you be Napoleon or Hitler ordering around the OKH.
Speaking in modern terms, an ICBM doesn't give a fuck if it's winter, or not.
Nobody's gonna launch any fuckin' nukes. Ain't happenin'.
"The Germans had Moscow in their grasp but Hitler FORCED them to turn South to Ukraine for wheat"
Interesting version of WW2 history.
Shirer, in "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" records a very different version of what happened to the Germans on the road to Moscow... and Shirer was recording events as they developed.
Beware revisionist historians.
Perhaps you could read a book or two on those who actually participated. Germany was within striking distance of Moscow in the SPRING, but orders were given AGAINST the wishes of the General staff to turn South where do you see claims otherwise?
"The Germans had Moscow in their grasp" ???
Hitler's megalomania always outran his supply lines. The best the German army could ever have done in Moscow would have been another Stalingrad.
In war, Russia has always been underestimated.
But if there is a war in the Ukraine, it won't remain local for very long.
Not yet. Still some way to go before that happens.
what else is going on right now that TPTB don't want known, this Russia thing may just be a cover for domestic legistation sneaking through like NDAA New Year's eve
... and the stock market continues to march ever higher. Unbelievable.
Outflows of capital from former BRIC nations have to go somewhere? And that is why this BLOG! IMHO
And Mikhail Khodorkovsky invites Kremlin critics to a peace summit to Kiev.
Doesn't that sound ironically like the "film actors guild" in Team America?
This is all so f***ing crazy....
Putin should of let that mofo lose a few fingers to frostbite in Siberia before he let him go to the beaches of Tel Aviv
Angela might just greatly damage the German economy. Good way to destroy herself and her party.
FARGIN' WAR!!!!
It's really quite unfortunate that the masses continue to allow these freaks to manage global affairs, but you knw what they say, you reap what you sow. What do you call it when you willingly wish for your own citizenry to parish because of thier foolish ways??
If Merkel makes good on this threat, billions in Germany-Russia trade is at risk. German industry won't be happy with Merkel.
Are the Krauts not an export based economy. The rest of their Euro market is in a deep doo doo. They are throwing away their best customer. Hope they remember how bad things were right after the war, and have the fortitude to endure it again.
Listen I tell you I have lived in Europe, there are not enough trees to warm up everyone's hose and cook food for even a winter's stretch. Most people are in the city and have no dacha gardens like the Russians to supplement their income. Russia is a vast pot of gold full of bio and mineral resources. Just think of Russia as a much bigger battery than the rest of Europe. My bet on survival is on the Russians.
Also they can be pretty dumb politically. Look at how they threw away an order for 800 Leopard tanks from Saudi Arabia, if that is not economical suicide I dont know what is. Their politicians right now are no better than Hitler who threw away an entire army in Stalingrad because of his crazed ideals. Woe to Germany for she is saddled by complete morons. Where are the great German leaders of the past like Otto von Bismark and Frederick the Great. Somewhere in there they lost great leaders for several generations. I mean just look at the names Merkel, seriously.
so I can't help but wonder how long does it take an economic scorched earth policy to become an actual scorched earth policy?
The only boards to really give a shit about is Corp. Boards? The fed and G-# boards are nothing but fancy dinner playhouses!
And all the while there's no sign of limp dick Barry.
He's "hanging out" with the worlds smallest penises...
Russia!!! Russia!!!
FREE KONIGSBERG--- Russians go home!!!
Really now, why don't you spill and soak your blood and that of your sons over every square inch of that ground. When you do that you have earned the right to tell the Russians its not their home. They payed that price, the property deeds are in their name.
Lots of Russkie blood in the average German starting east of Berlin. Hitler could point his finger at a map but he couldn't stop the fraus from being raped.
Merkel has not much support from the people in Germany. Her suggested "actions" will do a lot of harm to all the people in Germany, hopefully only economically and not worse.
She is not stupid. She knows Putin will stop the gas, and that will cause havoc around here. But it is a nice pre-summer day here today and right now nobody could care less about gas. It will be different in October.
Some people even think that Germany should stop BUY gas from Putin, as a sanction, and instead buy gas from the U.S. Lol
A first article in the German media today tells the people what bullshit that is: Fracking is not what it was supposed to be, and even with fracking there will probably be a natural gas shortage in the U.S. as early as next winter.
http://www.finanzen100.de/finanznachrichten/wirtschaft/trotz-fracking-wi...
No gas from Russia, no gas from Obama, what then?
Besides that there is an ever stronger citizens movement against war and for diplomacy: the monday demonstrations with more people attending every Monday. Government and mass media do everything to not mention it. Here one of the demonstation with English subtitles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzoptZ-u_aE
These demonstrations are taking place in many Germany cities every monday, and since ignoring them in the mass media has not made them disappear they are now being denounced by the war mongers as right-wingers.
Real double-speak with hello from George Orwell: Those who are preparing war and supporting the Nazis in Ukraine are the good ones, and the citizens against war are right-wingers.
"No gas from Russia, no gas from Obama, what then?"
Go long thermal underwear ;-)
Thermonuclear underwear.
Thanks for that informative update, Gunter.
I checked MSM and as you say there is no coverage of these demonstrations. We are all really badly served by the MSM these days.
You can take the girl out of the Stazi but you can't ............
If Merkel doesn't know that positioning Germany against Russia will cost her country dearly, she may be in for a shock.
Of course we don't know what she is saying to Putin in private.
So are you saying Merkel thinks she has "flexability"?
She has some flexibility. Politicians always do. She doesn't really want to anger Moscow because of the gas she gets and the BMWs, Mercs & Audis etc etc that Germany sells to Russians. Her current challenge is to publicly go along with G7 whilst not really doing anything serious. And probably make a few friendly tel calls to Putin.
Excellent post, Gunter, and thanks for the links. Who was that fellow? Very erudite humble and well-spoken journalist; In all honesty I cannot remember having been able to say that about any one individual in American journalism.
His name is Ken Jebsen, on youtube as kenfm. He was a left leaning journalist for German radio and TV and got kicked out once he started to ask the wrong questions. He considers himself now a "free" journalist and is relying on donations. Not sure about his life expectancy. He is very eloquent and can speak two hours without a teleprompter!
Just when I was starting to think Merkel was clever, she proves she is not. So how is a Russian gas dependant Europe going to do anything but self destruct trying to bully Russia?
If it comes to that, who in Russia do you have to bribe to keep the gas flowing? Putin's reach within Russia was created by someone(s). I expect the Rest of the Free World know who to call.
... Revenge is Best Served Cold...
I suspect the spheres of influence are starting to synchronize their spins against Russia. A slow moving escalation will generate a lot of emotional outpouring from Russian supporters as they stiffen their resolve to accept the "smote" that will befall them. Russia should have spent the last number of weeks gaining world support. Instead, they presented the "Strong Man" image in the hopes the "Weak" of the world would rally to them. Everyone is climbing up onto the fence and getting their popcorn ready.
...Let's get ready to Rumble...
.
The quickly accelerating and serious challenge to the Petro dollar hegemony of US is perhaps starting to make everyone in the political and banking West very nervous - desperate government "people" are about to do desperate things....
ps and BTW isn't there another little country in the G7 that is missing from Merkel's statement?... China
