RIP Diplomacy: Merkel Says Geneva Accord Has Failed; G-7 Preparing Action Against Russia

Tyler Durden's picture

Last Thursday, when to much fanfare, the latest diplomatic iteration of the Ukraine "de-escalation", i.e., the Geneva Accord, was revealed, we said "Everyone knows that the half-life of these pointless diplomatic summits  aimed at "de-escalating" geopolitical tensions is measured in days if not hours..." Looks like many did not know. So moments ago Angela Merkel finally explained it for them, and even the slowst algos:

  • MERKEL SAYS GENEVA ACCORD PROCESS HAS FAILED

During discussions with Vladimir Putin today, Merkel said Russia had a chance to convince Ukraine separatists to back down but "that chance has now gone."Perhaps even more concerning is her concluding remark that:

  • MERKEL SAYS JOINT G-7 ACTION AGAINST RUSSIA NOW BEING PREPARED

.... To be followed shortly thereafter by the Russian "scorched earth" response to NATO we discussed earlier?

No surprise here, the G7 is playing out their game as planned.  Sanctions are an act of war and consequences will follow.

BTW, I got a good belly laugh watching Horseface Kerry dissing RT, and I noticed that the Guardian published an article by a neoclown demanding RT be censored in the name of public morality. Good move Kerry, you just boosted RT's viewership.

The USSA/EU must be losing the information war.

Russia should just cut the gas to Europe, and make it a minimum one year gap.

Then let's see if the west develops any sort of appreciation for actual diplomacy, honoring prior committments and perhaps even, from time to time, minding its own business.

What seems to be missing from the conversation is Germany is announcing their THIRD war.  So no one should be surprised...it's Germany making the announcement again.  Which means they should be 'helping' Poland, Holland and France really soon.

Just thought I would point out that we've all seen this script before.

Not completely clear to me but I'm not an expert on international law.  I still upvoted you as 11 reds (and counting) seems excessive.

.

Blockade

"A blockade is an effort to cut off food, supplies, war material or communications from a particular area by force, either in part or totally. A blockade should not be confused with an embargo or sanctions, which are legal barriers to trade..."

Economic sanctions are an act of war – Ron Paul

'SS: Now, you yourself have called sanctions an “act of war,” and unilateral sanctions are a common tool for the West to pressure other nations, so…The US is at war with many countries, like Iran, Cuba – isn’t it?

Ron Paul: What if China or Russia, or somebody came in and said: “You cannot import certain things, we’re going to prohibit you from trading?” The American people wouldn’t like that very much, and yet we too causally do that with others. But, in principle, it’s not quite like a shooting war, but it is a war...'

Let's keep clarity and perspective, shall we?  The TRUE beneficiary of all this is the Fed (its USD, USTs), insofar they are trying to delay its demise by doing the only thing that's left to them now: War!

Unfortunately for the political fools and lackeys in the EU, it is Europe that's going to feel the pain and "pay the price" (pun intended) of this American war-by-proxy.

Keep packing, racking and stacking.  Gold bullion is on sale in the Blue Light Special.  For now.

Summer is coming so Southern Europe can afford to be a little chilly with no heat. As for electricity, maybe they better rethink those Green Energy plants. So what if it isn't economically viable, got to teach those Ruskies a lesson. Plus with the Fed Taper, they can just take that "savings" and loan it to the ECB, and the ECB can start to ramp up it's own QE. Money isn't the problem when it's printed. Russia would be smart to announce "maintenance" downtime on their pipelines to Europe as soon as the West tries more sanctions. Russia will have to tighten their belt this summer with fewer gas rubles, but the worm will turn to their favor in the fall and winter. The West economies should be reeling by that time from all the increased costs.

"i am sure putin was expecting this"

I doubt it. Merkle and Putin had a close relationship for a long time. Even if they didn't, Putin would not expect a German leader (excepting Hitler) to go against the wishes of so many CEOs of large German companys; ie, let the gas/oil flow continue.

I suspect someone has some dirt on Merkle that she doesn't want in the public domain.

She must be under immense pressure from some source to turn on Putin.

Your last sentence says it all.  Germany has to be being pulled in two directions at once.  What will really matter is not the conjecture but what actions are taken... and how they play out.  There is no reason to believe that Merkle (or anyone else) isn't maintaining a seperate dialogue with Putin...  and probably outside of NSA surveillance now that said cat is out of the bag (and Snowden is in Russian hands).

One possibility... This will play out like Georgia. Except, now US is trying to involve NATO/EU in fighting Russia prior to pulling a disappearing act.

US has already assured fools in Kiev that US has their back (as happened in Georgia). Now US trying to convince NATO/EU that US is totally committed to action against Russia... prior to US pulling a disappearing act.

A fair analysis Snidley, the question is how will the rest of the NATO members handle "sharing Germany's pain" as it were.

In particular, should additional sanctions actually have any real bite I wonder how the average 'merican will handle $8.00-$10.00 per gallon gasoline?

The Germans had Moscow in their grasp but Hitler FORCED them to turn South to Ukraine for wheat of all things. The weather was so wet that they made slow and costly progress to that end. By the time they returned to Moscow the weather came on and stopped the advance. So all you can really say is that the weather in Russia will shove it up your ass whether you be Napoleon or Hitler ordering around the OKH.

Doesn't that sound ironically like the "film actors guild" in Team America?

This is all so f***ing crazy....

It's really quite unfortunate that the masses continue to allow these freaks to manage global affairs, but you knw what they say, you reap what you sow.  What do you call it when you willingly wish for your own citizenry to parish because of thier foolish ways??

Are the Krauts not an export based economy.   The rest of their Euro market is in a deep doo doo.  They are throwing away their best customer.  Hope they remember how bad things were right after the war, and have the fortitude to endure it again.

Listen I tell you I have lived in Europe, there are not enough trees to warm up everyone's hose and cook food for even a winter's stretch.  Most people are in the city and have no dacha gardens like the Russians to supplement their income.  Russia is a vast pot of gold full of bio and mineral resources.  Just think of Russia as a much bigger battery than the rest of Europe.  My bet on survival is on the Russians.

Also they can be pretty dumb politically.  Look at how they threw away an order for 800 Leopard tanks from Saudi Arabia, if that is not economical suicide I dont know what is.  Their politicians right now are no better than Hitler who threw away an entire army in Stalingrad because of his crazed ideals.  Woe to Germany for she is saddled by complete morons.  Where are the great German leaders of the past like Otto von Bismark and Frederick the Great.  Somewhere in there they lost great leaders for several generations.  I mean just look at the names Merkel, seriously.

Merkel has not much support from the people in Germany. Her suggested "actions" will do a lot of harm to all the people in Germany, hopefully only economically and not worse.

She is not stupid. She knows Putin will stop the gas, and that will cause havoc around here. But it is a nice pre-summer day here today and right now nobody could care less about gas. It will be different in October.

Some people even think that Germany should stop BUY gas from Putin, as a sanction, and instead buy gas from the U.S.  Lol

A first article in the German media today tells the people what bullshit that is: Fracking is not what it was supposed to be, and even with fracking there will probably be a natural gas shortage in the U.S. as early as next winter.

No gas from Russia, no gas from Obama, what then?

Besides that there is an ever stronger citizens movement against war and for diplomacy: the monday demonstrations with more people attending every Monday. Government and mass media do everything to not mention it. Here one of the demonstation with English subtitles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzoptZ-u_aE
These demonstrations are taking place in many Germany cities every monday, and since ignoring them in the mass media has not made them disappear they are now being denounced by the war mongers as right-wingers.

Real double-speak with hello from George Orwell: Those who are preparing war and supporting the Nazis in Ukraine are the good ones, and the citizens against war are right-wingers.

If Merkel doesn't know that positioning Germany against Russia will cost her country dearly, she may be in for a shock.

Of course we don't know what she is saying to Putin in private.

She has some flexibility. Politicians always do. She doesn't really want to anger Moscow because of the gas she gets and the BMWs, Mercs & Audis etc etc that Germany sells to Russians. Her current challenge is to publicly go along with G7 whilst not really doing anything serious. And probably make a few friendly tel calls to Putin.

His name is Ken Jebsen, on youtube as kenfm. He was a left leaning journalist for German radio and TV and got kicked out once he started to ask the wrong questions. He considers himself now a "free" journalist and is relying on donations. Not sure about his life expectancy. He is very eloquent and can speak two hours without a teleprompter!

Just when I was starting to think Merkel was clever, she proves she is not. So how is a Russian gas dependant Europe going to do anything but self destruct trying to bully Russia?

If it comes to that, who in Russia do you have to bribe to keep the gas flowing?  Putin's reach within Russia was created by someone(s).  I expect the Rest of the Free World know who to call.

... Revenge is Best Served Cold...

I suspect the spheres of influence are starting to synchronize their spins against Russia.  A slow moving escalation will generate a lot of emotional outpouring from Russian supporters as they stiffen their resolve to accept the "smote" that will befall them.  Russia should have spent the last number of weeks gaining world support.  Instead, they presented the "Strong Man" image in the hopes the "Weak" of the world would rally to them.  Everyone is climbing up onto the fence and getting their popcorn ready.

...Let's get ready to Rumble...

I hope she continues to have reasons to smile", wrote the reporter.
