Satellite Images Reveal Massing Of 15,000 Ukraine Troops, Hundreds Of Tanks Around Slavyansk
Yesterday, we jokingly noted that with separatists blockading Slavyansk from a Ukraine special-forces invasion, and with the Ukraine army blockading Slavyansk from said separatists (unclear exactly why), that the east Ukraine city of Slavyansk is easily the most blocked city in the world (and in dire need of fiber). However, based on just released satellite imagery showing the build up of Ukraine forces around Slavyansk - a city which as a reminder is located in Ukraine - what is going on around Slavyansk is no laughing matter.
Russian RIA Novosti reports that it has received satellite photos, "which clearly show the accumulation of a large number of Ukrainian military equipment and weapons on the border with the Russian Federation and in the vicinity of Slavyasnk." RIA cites a source in the Russian Defense Ministry, who commented that the pictures show a military formation designed "to wipe out the city and all its inhabitants from the face of the earth."
According to source, the group has more than 15,000 troops from the Ukraine army and national guard, about 160 tanks, 230 infantry fighting vehicles and APCs, and as much as 150 mortars, howitzers and multiple launch rocket systems ("Grad" and "Smerch").
The source concludes that "This concentration of troops in one area is not compatible with the potential of self-defense forces, armed with only a small number of pistols and submachine guns."

Naturally, none of this should come as a surprise, as rationally one would expect Ukraine to respond to a comparable build up of Russian forces along the Ukraine border which itself was revealed two weeks ago via satellite photos as well:

It goes without saying that a matching build up (or at least an attempt at one) by Ukraine is normal and to be expected. The problem is that as we have witnessed every day over the past two weeks, military provocations on both sides of the conflict happen every day if not every hour. The latest one happened moments ago, as reported by RT:
Unknown assailants landed in helicopters and attacked a checkpoint in Soledar city in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, a militia source told RIA Novosti adding that there is a fight going on. There is no information on the number of casualties.
Soledar is located about 30 kilometers south east of Slavyansk.
The people’s governor of Donbass region Denis Pushilin confirmed to RT that there is fighting in Soledar. As the unknown men attacked the checkpoint, the militia was forced to retreat, the source told RIA.
The second checkpoint is preparing for attack he said, adding that there are about 50 activists, many without weapons.
For now these skirmishes around "checkpoints" have been isolated events. But how long before the Ukraine "special forces" which may well amount to 15,000 troops as reported by Russian media, get involved. And how much longer after that until Russia retaliats. But the biggest question: who will be the agent provocateur who fires the first shot in hopes of launch an all out war? Indeed, who stands to gain the most from yet another war - one which will hardly be "contained"

If Putin attacks in this situation he´s a fool. I don´t think he is. If the Ukraine army kills some more people he´ll go to the UN and demand a regime change in Kiev. The Russian are in the better position by far, no need to kill that with a useless retaliation action.
If Putin goes in, it will not be for retaliation, but to put paid to the Kiev Coup Regime.
And so he knows that once he crosses the border he has to go all the way to capture Kiev or better Lviv. Few civilian casualties aren't yet enough to justify that and any such action would be quickly labeled disproportionate use of force and mean an all out war. Alternative to that is to wait until Ukrainians get fed up with US backed stooges currently in power and boot them, Putin will be sure enough to use every page out of CIA playbook to stage a counter-coup. Wait until winter.
Going all the way to Kiev would be unnecessary or disproportionate. I'd like to try the nazi mofo's for crimes against humanity as much as Vlad, but fact is they'll take the same route as (former) Ukraine gold did, just as that first Russian tank goes across the border.
Creating a new N. Ireland on its borders is the least Russia needs, so no, capturing Kiev is not an option. Also, that large river makes an excellent natural border demarkation line...
Why go to Kiev and be responsible for their debt. He does not need western Ukraine since they are more pro Poland etc. Why pay pensions and salaries and give free gas to people that dont like you. The best farm land and industry are in the East. He only needs to get up to the Dnieper and then south to Odessa to link up with Transniester.

I hear cutting off the gas to West over and over and all it is doing is driving the West to secure alternate sources of energy and complete distrust in reliability of Russian gas. Russia really depends upon the sale of Russian gas and to significantly reduce that income will have long lasting economic ramifications. Do you think China is going to pay full market price for the gas? Russia has pretty high break even prices on gas and oil production. Aleksei Kudrin warned about overspending on the military and other programs with only oil and gas income but he got fired. So beware of sanctions and the cutting off of gas income.

I do believe you're correct. Vlad, and Russian hierarchs, would very much prefer to avoid an armed incursion into Ukraine. But if they feel compelled by events to go in, there is no real disadvantage in their occupying Kyiv, rather than stopping in the East, or at the river. Should take three days, or less.
If an invasion occurs, the Russians will take Odessa too, since 1) excluding the rump-Ukraine from the sea is strategically advantageous, and 2) everyone I've ever met from Odessa says... "is Russian city".

There was hope that Ukrainian military would upend the Kiev government, but that is not happening, for whatever reason.
Seems that there are more effective and less dangerous options than military intervention at this point.
For example, call for a general strike and protest by those in eastern Ukraine regions which are primarily pro-Russian. Call for a vote of the people in those areas for if they want to join Russia or remain in the Ukraine.
If the eastern Ukraine regions are truly pro-Russian the results should be as they were in Crimea.
Then what's the West going to do in light of an overwhelming vote by the actual people ?

There will not be a war because a war would require U.S. participation. The U.S. empire's military is crippled and exhausted after almost 13 years of fighting in the sandbox without victory. There may be a skirmish between Russian and Ukrainian troops (and Western mercs), but there will be no war. The U.S. cannot beat the Russian bear in his backyard. If there is fighting it will go down like it did in Georgia in 2008. Many Ukrainian units sent to the east have already defected or disarmed. They have no will to fight.

Those barracks will not hold 15K troops, to begin with, nor will the number of transports carry anywhere near that many troops. The number of vehicles in the pics are pretty standard for normal to below-normal staffing at facilities of that size.
