Canadian Sanctions "Boomerang": Cancels Russia-based Spy Satellite Launch

Tyler Durden's picture

The Conservative Canadian government’s hard line on sanctions against Russia has scuttled the launch of a key Canadian military satellite that was to be put into orbit by a Russian rocket. As The Ottawa Citizen reports, on the heels of Russia expelling a Canadian diplomat in Moscow, labelling him a spy, Canadian Space Agency spokeswoman Maya-Olivia Eyssen said the spy satellite, which was to have been launched from Russia’s facilities in Kazakhstan, is now trying to find another country or private company willing to send it into space. Russia has indicated it is more than willing to launch the Canadian satellites, say sources.

The Conservative government’s hard line on sanctions against Russia has scuttled the launch of a key Canadian military satellite that was to be put into orbit by a Russian rocket.

Officials with the Canadian Space Agency and the spacecraft’s builder, Com Dev, are now trying to find another country or private company willing to send the surveillance satellite into space.

The move to cancel the June 19 launch of the satellite comes as the Canadian government continues with sanctions against Russia over the situation in Ukraine.

But as The Ottawa Citizen notes, this is a decision by Canada...

In its statement, Com Dev noted it was the Canadian government that decided not to proceed with the planned launch.

Russia has indicated it is more than willing to launch the Canadian satellites, say sources.

Somewhat shooting the nation's space indutsry in the foot...

The Canadian government’s sanctions against Russia could put Canada’s space industry in a bind as there are a limited number of nations and private companies capable of launching satellites.

As Putin said about the Americans...

“The US is certainly one of the world’s leaders. At some point it seemed that it was the only leader and a uni-polar system was in place. Today it appears that is not the case. Everything in the world is interdependent and once you try to punish someone, in the end you will cut off your nose to spite your face,” he said.

I am likewise puzzled by the PM's recent behaviour, which is costing him a great deal of support at home. In the past, he has been an accomplished, fair-minded statesman, respected widely. Lately, he is a different person. Canada's reputation as peacekeeper is jeopardized. The timing of our new role as aggressor and invader seems to coincide with changes in the PMO.

he like any careerist politician, now in his waning years, is legacy obsessed. Chretein was the same and so on. It's like these guys have politician cards under their bed instead of hockey cards and they obsess over their own vanity as a "statesman" and "shaper of history". He's a fucking wank, end of story.

I've lived in Vancouver my whole life and never witnessed a navy vessel leaving port, until 2 weeks ago. You have to understand,  this is not the US, you don't see military hardware of any kind roaming around Canada, except for the odd truck packed with a bunch of 18 year old new recruits going somewhere for basic training.

Watching a navy vessel cruising out of port had everyone on the seawall I was walking on stopped at attention. Not that Russia has anything at all to worry about due to Canada's military....

Not surprising: Canada participates in all or nearly all UN peacekeeping missions.  A UN peacekeeping/observation force in east Ukraine doesn't seem farfetched given the uncertainty about who's behind what over there and the dangerous tensions that are building.

Yes, I know that including the magic downvote-magnet letters "UN" someone's going to start ranting about the NWO.  Whatever.  Having neutral people in place to witness, maybe even stop, violence in disputed areas occasionally works to deter it from happening in the first place, although it's generally reserved for places with such a breakdown of law and order that the locals are bound and determined to kill each other no matter who else is around.

Global Hunter, funny how it all ties together.... Another artist to record at Le Studio was Sting, did a song called Russians ("if the Russians love their children too"), an end the Cold War 1.0 anthem.

The answer to Sting's question is YES. So much so that Putin is in the process of proving that fact to the whole world by standing up for their future. These tests (Snowden, Syria, Ukraine, with more to come) will prepare Putin for Paris 2015 where he will present facts and present 'Obama' with a choice. The citizens of the world will isolate and neuter North America if it must. It's a matter of survival.

It's a MEAN business, as in cruel, when you think you're headed for the stars only to realize that "the moment of glory is over before it's begun". Whether you like Rush music or not, I hope ZHrs will appreciate that they started from nowhere and survived a very mean, often spirit crushing business. If only our governments worked as hard and as smart! Still writing and recording, still touring and selling out, playing with The Clockwork Angels String Ensemble these days! (Nigel Kennedy eat your heart out lol)

Barring the unforeseen Rush will likely carry on and overtake The Beatles and Stones for most gold records. In the biz those records on the wall is what tells the story. A The Clash had huge cultural influence and large unit sales but when the new material stops coming and the tours stop then it's game over : (

I wonder what The Little B will be doing 35 years from now...

"Despite the availability of necessary documentation and legal rights for producing RD-180 in the United States, NASA is considering development of an indigenous core stage engine that would be "capable of generating high levels of thrust approximately equal to or exceeding the performance of the Russian-built engine." NASA considered in 2010 to produce a fully operational engine by 2020 or sooner, depending an partnership with the U.S. Defense Department."

Those backwards Russians have this beauty also:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VA-111_Shkval

The speed of the VA-111 far exceeds that of any standard torpedo currently fielded by NATO. This speed is a result of supercavitation: the torpedo is, in effect, flying in a gas bubble created by outward deflection of water by its specially shaped nose cone and the expansion of gases from its engine. By keeping water from coming into contact with the surface of the body of the torpedo, drag is significantly reduced, allowing extremely high speeds.

Launched from 533 mm torpedo tubes, the VA-111 exits the tube at 50 knots (93 km/h). Shortly afterwards, its liquid-fuel rocket ignites and propels it to speeds of up to 200 knots (370 km/h). Some reports indicate that speeds of 250+ knots may be achieved, and that work on a 300-knot (560 km/h) version was underway.[2] The rocket engine uses a combination of high test peroxide and kerosene; the propellant tanks contain about 1500 kg of hydrogen peroxide and 500 kg of kerosene.[3]

Early designs may have relied solely on an inertial guidance system.[4][5] The initial design was intended for nuclear warhead delivery. Later designs reportedly include terminal guidance and conventional warheads of 210 kg (460 lb).[6]

The torpedo controls its direction using four fins that skim the inner surface of the supercavitation envelope. To change direction, the fin or fins on the inside of the desired turn are extended, and the opposing fins are retracted. To make faster turns, the push plate on the nose can be used to control the shape of the bubble the missile is traveling in.

It works like this: There's a different cultural approach to politics between the US and Canada. US politicians get away with shit by turning politics into a well-produced show that's entertaining as all hell, but spun hard to mislead. Canadian politicians get away with shit by making our politics so boring and insipid that nobody pays attention. Canadians consume US entertainment, and US politics...far more than their own. So the average Canadian agrees with whatever political view is presented by the US MSM, and knows nothing about what's happening here.

So yes, we will do whatever America wants, because their political presentation is far more entertaining.

Canada gave up its sovereignty decades ago. Our political system is more smoke and mirrors than anything else. With the exception of some domestic policies (ie:Health care and gun control) we take our marching orders from London and Washington. We have no gold reserves (big fat zero) and our dollar is backed by nothing more than the US economy. Sadly. Our monetary policy and foreign policy are dictated to us mostly by the Fed and Washington. With no control over fundamental monetary policy or foreign policy we are little more than a puppet state. An "independant Nation" with all the window dressing of sovereingty and a "seperate" culture but with none of the necessary substance to create the foundation or bedrock for true freedom. We are Gaul to Rome. Nothing more. Nothing less. Heil Caesar.

I hold it against you. There are only two reasons to have voted for Harper: (1) pure ignorance, or in other words you base your vote on ads you see on TV and ignored the damning evidence aginst Harper being a sell out to Canadian interests or (2) short sighted greed, or in other words, you vote for the party that will cut your taxes and fuck everyone else.

That's the point of BEING in Canada, is none of us are destroyed by economic turmoil so long as the safety net is there.

If runaway climate change is for real, I think it could go either way.

Either the Arctic will open up and get exploited, or Thermohaline Circulation will shut down, sending North America and Northern Europe into deep freeze.

EDIT: and I apologize, that top post should be "ice-free Arctic in the summer in a couple years". Year round is probably a few decades away, or never in the case of Thermohaline shutdown.

True, I wouldn't rule out the thermohaline circulation shut-down. Problem with that is... adding in very heavy (mass) moving liquids in this as well as temperature is even more of a crazy guess. Once it does happen, if it does, permanent / long-term freezing isn't guaranteed then. Once momentum is added back in from tidal forces and from the storms above maybe something else happens. Could be very chaotic.

With the melting in the Arctic, the satellite was likely heading for orbit over the polar region. This is an area Putin is going after too, so the Russians probably were not real excited to launch this satellite anyway. Most Americans have probably never heard the name PAUL DESMARAIS. However, DESMARAIS is the CANADIAN TYCOON who is said to front for THE ROTHSCHILD FAMILY in running the wealthy and influential POWER CORPORATION OF CANADA. Desmarais has also reportedly been the power-behind-the-throne for at least five Canadian Prime Ministers: Pierre Trudeau, Brian Mulroney, Jean Chretien (whose daughter is married to Desmarais's son Andre), Paul Martin, and ZIOCON Stephen Harper....

Desmarais is also a close friend and supporter of French President Nicolas MOSSAD Sarkozy, who scrapped the Gaullist policy of supporting sovereignty for FRENCH-SPEAKING QUEBEC, abandoned the policy. Desmarais is vehemently opposed to independence for Quebec. Desmarais has used his influence and wealth to ensure the loyalty of at least two pro-federal Quebec Premiers, former Premier Daniel Johnson and current Premier Jean Charest.

DESMARAIS founded the CANADA CHINA BUSINESS COUNCIL and struck up a personal friendship with Bo while he was mayor of Dalian.

Desmarais, through his son ANDRE, who took over as president of POWER CORPORATION, the tycoon's relationship was maintained with Bo when he became Communist party First Secretary in Chongqing. Chretien and Canada's far right-wing evangelical former Trade and Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day also maintained close contact with Bo through the Desmarais lobbying operation in China.

Harper has also been close to Bo and the demotion of the Chinese Communist regional leader is a blow to Harper's business outreach to China, which has included an offer for Alberta tar sands oil since the moratorium by the Obama administration on the Keystone pipeline project from Canada to Texas.

Chretien served on the board of Power Corporation's Consolidated Bathurst Ltd. and he and his son-in-law, ANDRE DESMARAIS, who is married to Chretien's daughter France and owns MANULIFE INSURANCE and CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, were keen to land power plant deals in China, with the assistance of Bo. Chretien's nephew, RAYMOND CHRETIEN, was named CANADA'S AMBASSADOR TO CHINA to help facilitate energy deals between Power Corporation and China.

Desmarais, who has been less-than-candid about his religious affiliation, is a strong influence on the Harper government's strong support for the right-wing government of Israel. In fact, the "Marais" in "Desmarais" is the historically Jewish neighborhood of Paris. And PAUL DESMARAIS is known to associate with the Jewish upper crust in Palm Beach, Florida, where he maintains one of his homes.

Another close associate of Desmarais is MAURICE STRONG, who once served as President of Power Corporation before he became a UN senior bureaucrat who became the LEADING PROPONENT of GREENHOUSE GAS CARBON CREDITS under the KYOTO CLIMATE CHANGE CONTROL PROTOCOLS. Desmarais, the Rothschilds, and Soros has also feathered the nest of Bo's son, BO GUAGUA, who attended ELITE PREPARATORY SCHOOLS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, as well as OXFORD, a pre-requisite for what Desmarais and the Rothschilds hoped would be the beginning of a BILDERBERG GROUP / COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS (CFR) stranglehold on China. BO GUAGUA was also a member of the OXFORD EMERGING MARKETS STUDENT CLUB, a training ground for Rothschild/Soros implants in targeted nations.
