CEO Of Russia's Largest Oil Company, Rosneft, On US Sanctions List

Tyler Durden's picture

Yesterday we reported that among today's expanded sanctioned individuals would be the heads of Rosneft and Gazprom:

Moments ago, we got confirmation that at least one of those two will indeed be "sanctioned" - that someone is Igor Sechin, head of Rosneft which also happens to be Russia's largest oil extractor and refiner:

  • U.S. SANCTIONS LIST INCLUDES OAO ROSNEFT'S CEO SECHIN

The news will hardly cause Igor to lose his smile:

However, it appears we were only half right - Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller appears to have been spared for now. And now, as usual, the ball is in Putin's court.

Someone help me understand.  Why won't Russia just dump the dollar already?  Why use the currency of your enemy?  Is it some sort of MA(economic)D?

markar's picture

Everyone still needs dollars to conduct quite a bit of trade in this globalized economy, but those days are fast coming to an end.

gmrpeabody's picture

I am obviously missing something here, but what is right or even legal about targeting individuals who are not policy makers in a foreign country that you may have a beef with? I don't understand this thinking...

strannick's picture

Russians sanctioned, Arab gold stolen and sold in London. China, you paying attention? Cause your next.

udecker's picture

I'm glad someone else asked this question.  I'm reading this (and the other two threads about it), and no one else has mentioned these are individuals (the deputy chief of staff?) being sanctioned.  That's like Putin saying President Obama's limo driver can't use his debit card, but on a far more aggressive scale.

How is this legal or right?

Putin will get some real teeth in two weeks when his gas deal with China is unveiled to the world.

I can see inflation picking up across the EU in Q4 as heating bills increase 50-60% yoy.

Maybe Putin is trying to force the US to convert it's shale gas to LNG and ship it to Europe??

gmrpeabody's picture

You wouldn't know it by looking at GTLS...

Go figure.

CPL's picture

Exactly.  They only need to adjust the oil price by 156.91 on top of 'market price' in EUROS a barrel (since that's where it's all being funneled anyways) and the fight is over.  Not like any of their 'purchasers' were going to honor their debts.  They are all broke dead beats.

If they really wanted to fuck with them though, cash and carry only, priced only in PM's.

Sanctions?  Is that the new reason?  (Note I said "reason" because it is NOT an excuse.)
The new Ferrari dealership  discriminates against poor people.  I may have to enforce some sanctions.

P.S.  Only the little people have to obey sanctions.  But I guess we can read all about it in six months time.

Is this a plot to undermine Kerry's effortss???  the chaiman of the parliament?  what is next Lavrov himself???

wondered how Kerry is going to carry out his missions ... perhaps internet

Tengri Temujin's picture

I never understood why after the Nuland tapes the Russians didnt take the initiative and put sanctions on US govt officials and corporations?

I mean it would of been hard for the MSM to gloss over those facts, instead they played it off as just three seconds of Fuck the EU and left the rest of the tape on the editing room floor.

Azannoth's picture

Yes exactly, things like this make me think it's all just a show and Russia(Putin) are in on it. Russia could absolutely bury the West with it's intelligence but they do nothing .. things like that make you think, who really is the pawn and who the player.

Since the Cold War was just a ideological dispute between Brothers(Zionists in the West vs. Bolsheviks in the East), .. what don't we know about the current turn of events?

dontgoforit's picture

Yeah, well Cain killed Abel and it hasn't stopped since.

The highly over-compensated media celebrities would have started the "Russia is being mean to the US" meme.  And if the media celebrities could devote only 13 seconds to the MFG fraud without an outcry, they can ignore anything.

dizzyfingers's picture

...approval factor, everyone else thinks/publishes this and is getting praise so I must be OK?

Global Observer's picture

I will hazard a guess.

Russia will march its troops into the southeast Ukraine after some serious incident, restores law and order, conducts a referendum where the vote will be in favour of autonomous regions within Ukraine, conducts elections for the local assemblies and waits for Kiev to come up with a constitution that is in line with the referendum in the southeast and guarantees it in the future.

Sometime during the show, probably after Russin troops march into Ukraine, the West will impose economic sanctions on Russia that cannot be laughed off. The BRICS will announce their long awaited bank and currency for international trade, which will kill the US$ and replace it as the reserve currency.

The man with pointy horns's picture

Sounds good. But lets hope this currency is more a basket of currencies and traded goods. We don't need no more one countries global reserve currency.

Urban Redneck's picture

It would be interesting if the next rung on the escaltions ladder was Russia freezing the assets and accounts of Exxon and BP...

beegle's picture

who decides ? is it Barry ?

Global Observer's picture

And now, as usual, the ball is in Putin's court.

So he has to laugh again?

These aren't sanctions. They're just travel delays. Move along, nothing to see here.

Anyone read the book titled "Europe's last summer"? Somehow, all this idiocy reminds me of it...It is already a textbook case of all the things that should not have happened, beginning with US ground troops in Poland.

Dr. Engali's picture

Putin, you will accept your place in the NWO, resistance is futile.

john39's picture

that is what they would like you to believe.  in reality, the NWO is living on borrowed time, and cosmic clock is running down.

Dr. Engali's picture

You're not very good at detecting sarcasm are you?

john39's picture

i didn't junk you.

edit. and besides, while i get your tone... a lot of peope actually believe that Putin is a playing a role in the NWO.  I do not.

Peter Pan's picture

I beg to disagree.

The Spartans standing against the Persians was also an act of futility but no one remembers or glorifies the Persians.

Successive generations of men were inspired by the Spartans and other heroes who stood their ground in the face of evil and injustice.

If the NWO does establish itself you can bet that this world will become a human abbatoir where the sick, the elderly, the unemployed and the thinkers will be slaughtered.

Global Observer's picture

Putin, you will accept your place in the NWO

He already did. It is right at the top :-)

buzzsaw99's picture

would love to see russia severely cut oil production

Truther's picture

Or gas delivery for that fact.....

Winston Churchill's picture

Be a good move.Leaving gas on .
Hurt the USA a lot more than Europe.
$6 a gallon gas in the US would wake the American sheeple up rudely.

buzzsaw99's picture

If they cut oil production in half hopey would respond by releasing oil from the spr to manipulate prices lower but he could only keep it up for 3-6 months. After that russia could sell half as much oil for twice as much money for the rest of all time. In a war of attrition Russia wins and the usa eu maggots very well know that. It's a bluff. they will hosni putin if they have to.

yrbmegr's picture

We're running out of places to put crude oil in the U.S. If inventories rise further, the increments will start costing more to store.

IridiumRebel's picture

That's an excellent lying....errr...talking point for the MSM. Also, they could say that "Europenas pay like 8 bucks for a gallon!" Yep, all the good folks in America will then be calmed and simply take a second or third job to account for their newly found "PATRIOT ENERGY TAX". Hark! 'Tis that 7 dollar bread and ten dollar a lb. beef I see? Why yes, i would like milk at 11 bucks a gallon!
