On The Edge Of War: The Latest Russian And Ukraine Troop Movements
If Putin needed a pretext to finally drive across the Ukraine border, he got it today following first the death of nearly 40 pro-Russian protesters in Odessa during a confrontation between pro-Russia and pro-Kiev forces, and then, what appears to be a storming in progress right now by the Ukraine national guard of yet another separatist-controlled city in east Ukraine: Kramatorsk.
According to RT, Ukraine’s National Guard is storming the eastern town of Kramatorsk even as it has also resumed its special operation in Slavyansk, where two soldiers have been killed.
“The assault is starting now,” a Kramatorsk self-defense activist has told RIA Novosti by phone. Another activist told the news agency that the National Guard opened fire on self-defense forces.
Dozens have been killed or injured in Kramatorsk, a doctor told RIA Novosti. The medic added that the fighting has now stopped and all of those injured have been taken to hospitals in Kramatorsk and Slavyansk. At least two died on the way to the hospital, she said.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military’s special operation has resumed in the nearby town of Slavyansk. The headquarters of the people’s self-defense is under snipers’ fire, according to Itar-Tass. There are reports of injuries among protesters.
Recall that Putin has made it very clear that all the Kremlin needs to green light an operation in Ukraine is a pretext of "self-defense" for the pro-Russian citizens currently there being attacked by the local military, something which if the tables were turned, would have been classified as a civil war by the impartial western media.
So what does the theater of operations look like should Russia finally get involved?
The Washington Post is publishing a new map that shows, using information from the Royal United Services Institute, recent troop movements in the region. The graphic illustrates how military exercises conducted by Russia have left a big build-up of troops on Ukraine's border. It also shows Ukraine's own military moves to its borders with Russia and Moldova's Russian-dominated enclave, Transnistria.
It may be a long weekend.

I agree with your comments. As for the closest we have been to nuclear threat since Cuban Missle Crisis, i really dont see that, yet. We may be at the beginning of a series of deteriorations with Russia and China in terms of terriorial and economic conflicts that would bring us in that direction, but as one growing up in the 80s I can tell you we were much more concerned about it then than now. Lots of songs you can find with that theme back then, maybe they will be singing about it in 5-10 years time. What we are witnessing is a prelude of things to come for both Russia and China. I am very concerned about it, but to a large degree we have started down this path as you say over the last decade or so and I dont know how we will/can reverse course.
The rising power of China and the consequence of its closed political and economic systems will determine to a large degree of what the future has in store for us. You may hate the abusive cop on the corner, but while he abuses your rights and this leaves you indignant, without him the world maybe a far nastier place than you can imagine. Dont forget, these two countries brought us Stalin and Mao. Do a little homework on the two so you can see just how repressive and evil things can really get.

I came of age in the sixties fresh out of grad school - landed in Dallas in time for the Cuban missile crisis.
The supermarket shelves were stripped in a matter of hours.
I was also in Dallas when they got Kennedy.
That's when my real education began. My weltanschauung changed forever.

We struggle with all the horrors of the twentieth century we were born into and now see those horrors resurrected again before our eyes in graphic detail.
Going forward, the existential challenge IMO, is learning how to defeat the beast/deep state in all it's guises without being spiritually poisoned.
I was a young teen when everyone was building bomb shelters, schools had civil defense drills where we all had to hide under our desks, and Kennedy was president and subsequently killed for opposing Israel's effort to go nuclear.
I can say unequivocally, that there is a much greater danger of nuclear armageddon now than there was back then. Like the stock market, everyone is complacent about the possibility of nuclear war because - looking in the rear view mirror - there hasn't been one for the past 65 years.

It may be that Putin may actually appear to be attempting to improve the lot of Russians. Our government appears to act antithetically to the interest of all but a tiny minority. After all, Bolshivesim was imposed on Russia by wall street and the City via a bunch of German you know whooze.

Be careful what you wish for and give some thought to what would come after such a fall. If you live through that, you won't be flying anywhere for a very long time and sexual assult by TSA agents would be the least of your concerns. If you escape that, you could be paying protection to the local warlord/gangleader instead of taxes and his requirements might be a great deal more onerous than your present tax burden. You might come to long for the days of out of control police when its every man for himself.

This splits the Ukrainian forces, interdicts logistics for the southern Ukrainian forces which are then mopped up and sent back to Kiev sans weapons. Such a deep penetration is a key aspect of Russian military doctrine. Given all the arrows converging on Belogrod the map tends to support this thesis.
A few days a go ZH ran a video of a lone Ukrainian army tank tearing up the topsoil as it was harrassed by a Yugo. A lot of the Ukrainian units will be ghost units such that a "battalion" will have very few effective vehicles. When oligarchs rape a country they do not invest much in the military.

NGL is ready to go to market no pipeline required. UK recently completed a regasification facilty in the Bristol Channel if memory serves correctly. Not sure about other landing points in Europe. But the UK does have pipeline capacity to the continent so would be able to forward gas to les grenoilles et les autres.
