I was doing some historical research and found this fascinating article (from a book) written by a Lend-Lease officer during WWII. I know a lot about WWII, but this is the first time I have seen anything related to this particular incident.
This is an easy read...the author just blazes along; the story spills out of him with ease.
I am not going to ruin it for you by revealing too much, but let's just say that American lives were put at stake by the extraordinary circumstances revealed in this article. The author didn't realize the particular significance of what he saw or did at the time, but only became aware of it after the war.

The author went on in the aftermath of WWII to become a nationally-recognized speaker on Soviet espionage. He speaks in less-than-glowing terms about FDR and members of his administration (rightfully so, apparently).
In the "larger picture", this just goes to show how information so significant can become lost over time. It also shows the extent to which a government can become 'infected' with persons who have a separate agenda outside of national policy.

The American documentary channels may be embracing the collapse. How many shows are there about Alaska, survivalism, gold mining, pawn shops, salvage, moonshine, etc? The thing about gold is that it's still a good thing to own even if the worst case doesn't happen. I'm not opposed to owning a firearm for personal defense, but if you think that it will turn you into a one-man-army you are sadly mistaken. If civil order breaks down, there will be a lot of gangs and criminals with guns that will want your food. Sure you might kill one or two of them, but your stand will be short-lived. In the worst case, it is still best to own gold and use it to buy your way into a safer country.
Even better is to leave the CIVIL-WAR country before the shooting starts and price to EXIT goes up, and go relocate in a nice place, and then buy gold and bury it under your ass or where-ever and then wait, for 5-10 post-reconstruction and go back to your home-land and BUY the town, because nobody will have money to buy food, and your foriegn currency will be like GOLD.

Tusk raised the possibility of the EU buying liquefied gas from the United States or from Australia, saying steps in these directions should be made as soon as possible. Countries to the south, in the Mediterranean basin could also be important suppliers, he said.

Straujuma, who had meetings with representatives from U.S. gas companies earlier this week, presented their calculations on investments in Latvia. According to these calculations, the price of U.S. gas is competitive to what Russia is offering.
''Now we must do our homework and decide on our energy independence,'' Straujuma said.
According to her, it could take about two years before a U.S. energy company enters the Latvian market. In order for this to happen, Latvia must solve several technical matters in the ground, like, for example, access to a regional liquefied natural gas terminal.
Straujuma said that U.S. exports of gas to European and NATO countries was one of the main topics discussed during her meeting with U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz in Washington earlier this week.

I don't fear we have gone too far to recuperate. I do think, though, the new world in which we may find ourselves will be far different than what we have grown accustomed to. I feel these are historic times we are/will be living in.
A series of events may force sudden and dramatic change upon us. I happen to believe the coming change will be due to the current economic model collapsing, and that, for a whole host of reasons. If it does take place, it may get really, really, ugly even within our communities. Time will determine on the flip side how the pieces were put back together. Hopefully there are enough good people waiting in the wings ready and willing to do the work that needs doing..
For now it's a matter of just waiting for the cataclysmic event to occur. I also hope it isn't war, either regional or on a global scale. No one wants to see young people sacrificed needlessly.

I cannot exclude the possibility that such a 51% attack could be attempted. It could even go on for a while. However, I think it will turn out to be a very quick and very costly and painful lesson of the futility of herding cats for whoever attempts it. It would be a cartel that is particularly untenable, having to fight large growth in processing power and having no way to even locate competitors that don't want to be found somewhere in the dark web. All the while, transactions will still be happening one way or another.
It would be interesting to see how it develops, though.

If I remember correctly HMS Edinburgh was sunk by a U boat before it reached the UK. I recall a news story in about 1985 when they found the wreck and recovered the gold. Funny they went to all that trouble for something that is just a relic of bygone age.
