US F-15 Intercepts Russian Strategic Bomber Near Guam

Tyler Durden's picture

It appears Russian military activities are picking up around the world. As AP reports, the commander of U.S. air forces in the Pacific is reporting a significant increase in activities by Russian planes and ships in the region; adding that "there had been long-range Russian air patrols to the coast of California ... and a U.S. F-15 fighter jet intercepted a Russian strategic bomber that had flown to Guam."

As AP reports,

The commander of U.S. air forces in the Pacific is reporting a significant increase in activities by Russian planes and ships in the region.

Gen. Herbert Carlisle linked that to the situation in the Ukraine. He said Russia was demonstrating its capabilities and gathering intelligence on U.S. military exercises.

Carlisle said there had been long-range Russian air patrols to the coast of California and a circumnavigation of the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam. He said a U.S. F-15 fighter jet intercepted a Russian strategic bomber that had flown to Guam.

He also reported a sharp increase in Russian air patrols around Japanese islands and Korea.

Carlisle said there was a lot more Russian ship activity too.

He was speaking Monday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank.

You can use it to dig graves. OTOH, you might not need to if everyone gets creamated by nuclear weapons.

Also, maybe it wasn't a U-2 that messed up LAX airspace, it was a Russian bomber....

Our world in stupor lies;

Yet, dotted everywhere,

Ironic points of light

Flash out wherever the Just

Yes, the laws of mathematics will eventually assert themselves and cut spending on everything. Until then, the defense budget will only get pretend slashed the same way the rest of government spending gets "slashed" — instead of spending 4% more next year, we'll spend 3% more and call it a cut.

we're spending $1 TRILLION

that's

$1,000,000,000,000

on ONE type of fucking plane. ONE. Yes yes, 3 'versions'. And 1 engine.

So, as with centralization where the state once large enough kills itself, we've now committed to spend $1 TRILLION on a plane, that

1. does not have all-aspect stealth

2. did not meet its original design objectives (they lowered the performance requirements after the fact)

3. is overweight

4. is only comparable in performance to a late model F-16

5. costs MORE than an F-22

If one design defect is found it will affect ALL planes. If the engine has an issue, it will affect ALL planes. If a software glitch is installed, it will affect all planes.

How much you spend is not as relevant as HOW you spend it.

This is exactly why the promise of 'secret Military tech' does not esp. frighten or excite me.  When you see the graft and corruption in the MIC (same as every other cartel) you start to realize the money didn't go to secret black ops programs, it was mostly just funnelled to the MIC cronies, lackies, and the well-connected.

What do you mean by performance? This plane will never get into a dog fight. Dog fighting in general is dead. Stand off fire and forget weapons have changed the air battle field Significantly. Does the plane have issues? Yes....but what you are concerned about is mostly irrelevant to the application.

The missile tech we have today compared to then is not even comparable

The point is that the application matters. The plane not flying or turning better than an F15 or F16 doesn't matter if the plane is not seen. Can't kill what you can't see. And the weapon system alone will keep the plane so far out of range of other fighters those "performance" stats are irrelevant

When you combine the joint use with f22, which will act as basically the mothrship C&C, it is an extremely formidable fighting system. The other countries buying the plane and not getting the f22 with it are the ones getting the short end of the stick.

Mon, 05/05/2014 - 19:57 | 4730244 tokengator

Pilot told me that during red flag exercises the F22's would just rattle off call signs for the planes they just killed. Said the entire time he was up there he didn't see single one on his scope but he sure heard them rattling off kills, including himself.

We do have some very cool weapons systems. We also have some very shitty ones. Not sure where the F35 fits. I find the stealth comment from the one poster to kind of laughable. That is not something many people will be privy too.and just because someone claims info on it and "leaks" the info it doesn't make it truth. People make shit up for a lot of reasons. Plenty to knock this plane about but the stealth aspects I'm willing to bet are pretty good...stealth is one thing we are very good at.

How are the people of Alabama going to be safer and more secure by spending a trillion dollars on that plane? Exactly how will it defend the people of Alabama  - and who will it defend them against?

Why are we better off spending a trillion dollars on that "cool" plane rather than spending a trillion dollars modernizing our electrical and transportation infrastructure?

Why are we so "good" at making stealth stuff and so shitty at making cars, washing machines, telephones and stuff that we the people actually use?

No worries, we in the UK (If it still exists by delivery time...) are helping out financially by buying the worst performing, least suitable version, having spent many billions on thru deck carriers then spent more money on not modifying to not instal the necessay cats and  traps  but to have a ramp instead (just like the present cruiser-sized carriers) so we can use that inferior variant of the F35, and thus not be able to land and launch other aircraft necessary to undertake the full range of operations for which one has a full sized carrier. Argh!

As a senior officer involved (to his infuriation) in the argy-bargy of the QE class carrier redesign said to me, for an extra £2bn, we will now have two large rooms on each carrier in which Jolly Jack Tar will be storing large amounts of beer.He was not complementary towards the MoD or the Treasury.

Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter aircraft is an under-performing plane, according to Winslow Wheeler, Director of the Straus Military Reform Project of the Center for Defense Information, a part of the Project on Government Oversight.

According to Wheeler, the F-35 is a mediocre aircraft because its “varied requirements force it to make compromises” and says that the aircraft should be boxed.

With a little research, I realize now that for that particular model, small arms would need AP/API (not hard to get, you want some?) and an RPG in the crowd would be very helpful. Claims to be able to take a 50 cal. do not mean invulnerable to small arms.. they use ball ammo for the tests. I, personally would not fire at that type of asset without an anti-materiel piece of hardware, and I would rather it be sitting on the ground, unoccupied. And I would rather be at a distance that equates to 80+ clicks in the Leupold with a 100 yard zero. Do you want to go around on that one?

b.    That particular Hind pilot held a 100 meter hover.

c.     Lighting up a surveillance aircraft is SOP for intercepts, I can attest to that because I have recorded many a MIG lock on my on my tail. It is not particularly comforting.. and the games get weirder.. I almost got mid-aired by an IL-38  May.

d.    You likely do not work for the white house, but they are always looking for someone to lead a comment off with a snide jab that attempts to discount everything someone says.

e.    I did go to SERE.

f.     My “limited experience” was in EC-121Ms, EP-3Es, P-2V’s  and P-3A.’s, ..not in that specific order.  (I hunted subs in the latter two.. the P-2V was the berries with the best view in a greenhouse nose and a window you could open in the back) I had a seat up front in the P-3A as I ran comms from there

g.    I’ve been certified in several technical matters, traveled all over the f’n globe, million mile commercial flier and I am a recognized authority on many things.

h.    I used to collect all kinds of metal before the tragic boat accident.

i.      I do not obsess on military aviation, but I have done more and read more than most. One also tends to learn a lot about your own and the adversaries assets as one helps to construct the E.O.B..

j.      I won’t shut the f up, but you need the last word, don’t you?

A. Yes you did.

B. No he didn't. From the grainy video clip, I'd put him at less than 100 feet. Not 300 feet.

C. It doesn't matter that a MiG lit you up during an intercept back in the day. That is not SOP for an American F-15 today.

Why go on? You are making use of the irrational argument from authority. (Look up "logical fallacies" on Wikipedia.) The fact that you've done the (limited) things you've done does not give you authority when you're speaking about the myriad matters you're pretending to know something about. Good grief, do you think you're the only person who's been to S.E.R.E.? Tens of thousands of us have! So what? As if that means you can speak with authority about the vulnerabilities of a Hind! You yourself have admitted you were involved in comms and ELINT from the back of lumbering surveillance planes; yet you're pretending to speak with authority about helicopters and fighter jets with "been there, done that" quips interspersed in your text.

Enough of you.

China and Russia are doing military excercises right now.  Just as the U.S. and the Phillippines are.  If the U.S. can fly right up to their doorstep, they can do the same to the U.S..  Putin is not going to take intimidation and China is right there with him.

Remind me the last time someone got the better of Russia. The Mongols and Ghengis? Around 400 years before the USA was an itch in the Pilgrim Fathers' pants?

My money (err...Au?) is on the ex-KGB Colonel of 16 years standing, as opposed to an ex-lawyer with the dodgiest of credentials and a birth certificate from a cornflakes box.

My crystal ball sees another butt-fucking for Odummer and co. Sadly it also sees millions of peoples' collective future blighted by the poxy cunt as "acceptible collateral damage" (like with his drone killing frenzy, but much more justifiable according to that twat Carney).

Just be interesting to see how long before the Germans (who call the shots in Europe) get fed up wth this farce. Its on their doorstep and implications for them are massive (and none good). Or whether Merkel still takes it up the arse from the dipshit over the pond and those who control him (and no doubt herself).

History paints all presidents as "great men" who do "great things".  In reality, they are just individuals who have risen to the job.  The job is so incredibly multifaceted that no man, no matter how great, can do it alone.  The president can not control the banks, so I am pretty sure he can not control the people who spy for the banks.
