Putin Pulls A Fast One: NATO Says No Russian Troop Withdrawal

Tyler Durden's picture

Earlier today, before the high-beta, higher-trash selloff resumed, the main catalyst that pushed the market higher was the following headline:

  • PUTIN: RUSSIA PULLED BACK TROOPS FROM UKRAINIAN BORDER

Turns out all Putin was doing was merely trying to give his buddies yet another higher price level from which to sell. To wit:

  • NATO HAS NO INDICATION OF WITHDRAWAL OF RUSSIAN MILITARY FORCES FROM UKRAINE BORDER-NATO MILITARY OFFICIAL
  • UKRAINE SAYS RUSSIAN MILITARY DRILLS CONTINUING ON BORDER
  • UKRAINE BORDER SVC CAN'T SAY WHETHER RUSSIA ARMY IS WITHDRAWING

It is almost as if Putin was merely pulling the electronic legs of the high freaks with premeditated intent...

Remember who we're dealing with here and what the end goal is.  Putin could actually withdraw his troops, and the West controlled MSM would still say he did not.  They are framing this to blame Russia after all.

I was thinking the same thing. I think the biggest thing the whitehouse and Ukraine are afraid of is diplomacy actually working. They know Ukraine is going to fall apart by itself, and need a conflict to shift the blame to Russia.

"Well there goes our war...shit this warmongering stuff ain't as easy as it used to be. Hey China what are you doing later? wanna have a war?"

yes, yet I have a bit of a problem with this constant assumption that for the Cremlin the financial markets have anything nearly the same importance as for Washington. hell, even western european governments haven't this obsession with their own financial markets, not in this degree

anyway, maskirovka has also a diplomatic component. Russia is a member of the OSCE, and wants to keep it's membership there. So after a meeting with the OSCE, it makes sense that Putin shows a OSCE-requested gesture of goodwill, in the same way as Russia did intervene to free those OSCE prisoners

those diplo-moves might frustrate many, yet they do open the way to de-escalation

"..to free those OSCE prisoners" - they where not(!) OSCE "observers" or anything they had no mandate, they where simply spies nothing else.

they claimed so after they denied that they were their observers. I'm certainly not certain, but I think there's a very good chance they were NATO milintel, and there may well be an answer out there on the interwebs one way or another... but I wouldn't summon what the OSCE eventually claimed as "proof" anymore than you should cite the notion that bin Laden, reportedly, admitted being responsible for 9/11 some months after bin Laden, reportedly, strenuously denied involvement.

FYI. This guy is pro-Russian. According to him they weren't NATO spies, but not operating under an OSCE mandate either.

.

THE OSCE SPECIAL MONITORS IN EASTERN UKRAINE AREN’T NATO SPIES ...

"The credentials of the soldiers to be where they were, out of uniform, doing what they were doing, were not issued by the OSCE, nor did they report to OSCE. They were a military inspection team invited by the government in Kiev, according to a European military inspection protocol known as the Vienna Document of 2011..."

"A week later, the ostensible purpose of the detained Vienna Document men in Slavyansk was to look for evidence of cross-border Russian involvement of the kind alleged by the governments in Kiev and Washington. That foreign field officers without Russian fluency, accompanied by interpreters speaking in Kiev or western accents, could accomplish this after dark in Slavyansk was improbable to the group which detained them. So they called them NATO spies. US and UK newspapers claimed they were operating under the OSCE mandate. None of these claims was correct..."

STATEMENT OF DISASSOCIATION WITH WIKIPEDIA

To all ABOL users

Recently it has come to the attention of the Librarian that Wikipedia, a resource that has been cited repeatedly by the Librarian, is not only of questionable reliability, particularly with respect to its biographical reports of current figures, but also that it appears to be completely untrue to its stated mission of compiling knowledge in a true "open-source" environment.  In fact, recent, reliable reportage indicates that the Wikipedia system is entirely controlled by a cadre of young men with axes to grind and a misogynistic game plan for shaping the Internet public's view of current events.  Accordingly, the Library will no longer cite Wikipedia as a resource, and cautions all users with respect to any statements attributed to Wikipedia found in the Library, that such material should be viewed with suspicion, although not necessarily incorrect or unreliable.  Library users are invited to email the librarian with any specific information regarding Wikipedia references found in the Library.

People are so gullible.

Here's a clue:

Whatever a government official tells you about its military movements will ALWAYS be a lie.  There is every reason for them to lie, and not a single one to tell the truth.

Not just in relation to the Ukraine crisis - but all military movements.

Suprise is tactically valuable, and accurate announcements ruin that.

So, out of the Universe of possible actions a military can take, the one they announce can be safely eliminated from the list of possibilities.

The announcement was Putin's.

Regardless, why don't some of the Russian dash cams in Kamensky and Belgorod post videos of the massive convoys leaving?

FWIW.... Turning that many troops around doesn't happen in an hour, or even a day.  You'd see lots of movment to be prepared to go East that you wouldn't see to go West.

The reason is simple.

When you drive tanks on the road it damages the road and the tank.  If the Russian Army goes west they go tactical in tracks.

But if they were to go east , they'd have to be loaded on railways, and large trucks or they would damage both roads and tanks.  That makes a big signature.

Thus - no signature means no movement East.

Wed, 05/07/2014 - 15:14 | 4737006 trader1
trader1's picture

the future looks like paradigm shift in NATO-EU cooperation, and Ukraine offers a potential test:

We need to move away from the doom and gloom or what the French call un

déclassement stratégique. Europe is not at a point of no return, and the EU as a

whole is still the second biggest military power, with two nuclear powers amongst

its member states, and it still maintains a high degree of force projection capability,

even at the strategic level. But the strategic environment is changing, and the time

seems ripe to re-balance Europe and strengthen the EU–NATO partnership. The

obstacles to such a partnership will not disappear by themselves, but at the nexus

between lower budgets, American disengagement from Europe and emerging

security challenges, a reinvigorated partnership might emerge between the two

organizations that is able to address societal security issues and crisis management

in December 2013 will be the first step in that direction.

Ukraine may be just the rallying point for tighter EU integration.

Is it coincidence that EU parliamentary elections are only a couple weeks away?

Russian troops will remain on the Russian side of the border - however, the border will just move further west after Eastern Ukraine votes this weekend to re-join Russia.

LMFAO!!! Why would you believe NATO?

It has been demonstrated beyong a shadow of a doubt that the warmongers reside in West, at least for this cycle.

I'm not advocating taking Putin at his word either, but we have beau coup (coup ... get it?) evidence that the PTB in the West are pathological liars across the board. You can't name a guy in this thing whose word you can trust.

Putin needs to tell ZATO and the DC US that the Ukraine has "yellow-cake" and WMDs and so Russia needs to invade to "preempt" any future action by the Ukraine.

I would pay to see that shit show.

Putin is sitting on a population losing 500,000 drunken people a year a recession and surrounded by insecure borders.  He is even worse than the 1%ers everywhere else as his oligarch buddies and himself are going crash the country to try and keep control as foreign invesmtment will dry up. What company wants to deal with this moron. He already controlled the Crimea area anyway and acquiring the Ukraine does nothing to help him. As weak needed as NATO is they would still keep the other partners safe. Its too bad that Obama is such a wimp he could make life misearble for Putin in Syria and the bordering "Stans". Putin is such an idiot that he actually beleives that long term China will be his friend. One day he will wake up and realize that they will eat him for breakfest without better relations with the West. The oil and gas card will paly out when the "real" alternatve energy sources are made public by the CIA and other intelligence agencies.

Kiev says activists in eastern Ukraine to be 'liquidated or captured'

'The interim Ukrainian president's chief aide on Wednesday promised that all anti-Maidan activists in eastern cities of Slavyansk and Kramatorsk would be "liquidated or captured." Early on Wednesday, four pro-federalization activists "were liquidated" in the city council building in Mariupol, and 16 people were detained, he said...'

NATO HAS NO INDICATION OF WITHDRAWAL

Looks like another fast one from NATO/State Department. "No indication of withdrawal" is in no way equivalent to "no actual withdrawal". Do those guys ever say anything that's not an evasion or an outright lie?

To drive forward they would simply start rolling. = very little signature.

To pull back (without destroying the roads and damaging the tanks) they would have to load the tracked vehicles on trains and trucks = VERY BIG SIGNATURE.

They are saying they do not see that signature.

Whether or not to believe them is a different question.

But I would say this,

-You can NEVER BELIEVE what the military says about its own tactical movements.

BUT

- You can often believe what the opposition says about military movements.

The incentives that lead to this conclusion are these:  Honesty is bad when discussing your own troops (because it eliminates surprise), and honesty is good when discussing your opponent (because it builds your credibility - and you don't have to reveal everything you know).

"i am disarming you for your own safety."

"It is just a procedural question.  We do not suspect you of any crime."

"I won't cum in your mouth."

Certainly there are indications of NATO military buildup all along Russia's western and southwestern borders.

Offensive action claimed as defensive action is just about the only play in the US/NATO/Israeli playbook.

All you have to understand is that Russia knows that the US is trying to pull them into a war..and if they stay out of a war then the US will destroy itself..because it is sinking in its own self destructive money printing, criminal exploitation of other countries including Ukraine.  Ukrainians want to join Russia because they have already gotten a belly full of those US behaviors (pilfereing their gold etc) and the longer the US is running a puppet government made up redominantly of Nazis in UKraine the louder the cry of the Ukrainians to join Russia will be. Putin knows this so he is avoiding being painted as the villian and allowing the US its rightful place as the true villain.

Why the hell would anyone expect Putin to pull away from the border?

You've got all this shit happening right in his backyard, of COURSE he's going to have troops there! What brain-dead theory of geo-politics are these people following anyway? What's he supposed to DO? Ignore it?

And since it seems that plenty of OTHERS have chosen to establish THEIR presence there, no one is speaking from a place to demand that Russia not interfere!!! Of all the different groups lifting their legs on Ukraine, Russia is one of the only 2 that HAS any right to be there!

The US has spent many years fucking with Russia, thanks to the old Cold War dinosaurs running our show, and theirs. The fall of the USSR was a GIFT that we squandered. Had we gone in there with a GENUINE offer of friendship and cooperation, and TRUTHFUL assurances that we'd never, ever try to take advantage of their little 'problem', we'd all be living in a VERY different world today!

Instead, capitalist businessmen paired up with their Russian counterparts and robbed the country blind, and turned the place into a Disney World for organized crime. Politicians kept up the old 'commie-threat' shit long after it had any relevance. NATO decided to play the incredibly annoying child's game where you wave your hands closer and closer to your friend's face, chanting, "I'm not touching you...I'm not touching you...I'm not touching you..."

Really, did the expansion of NATO into former Soviet countries do ANYTHING to improve everyone's security? Did it provide ANY strategic value at ALL? Was there ever any reason to believe those countries were in imminent danger of being re-taken by the Russians? Or was it just a juvenile taunting of a former enemy on the ropes, a gratuitous kick in the nads after you've already won? A way of getting all up in their faces to gloat?

Then we decide to stick ballistic missiles in Poland...why? Didn't something like that happen to us back in the 60's? And weren't we like, really, really pissed off about it? Is there some reason we thought the Russians wouldn't feel the exact same way? Seriously, whatever Putin's other issues, he and his people have every RIGHT to be concerned with what's going on in Ukraine. And placing your troops on the border in a situation like that is a no-brainer. If this shit was happening in Mexico, you know damned WELL our military would be there, on alert. And how would WE feel if Russians and Chinese started getting involved?

This whole thing is such bullshit.

There are plenty of valid complaints on BOTH sides on a WIDE variety of issues. None of them are relevant to THIS situation. And they are nothing but distractions, 'shiny objects' being waved.

It is not our business. It is between Russia and Ukraine. We SHOULD be telling everyone else to back the fuck off and let them work it out. And we SHOULD be condemning the IMF for waving their fucking MONEY around when the tensions are so high!! Why are these fuckers allowed to market their loans in a war zone?
