Russia Says "Forced To Respond" But Warns Sanctions "Not Our Method"
Despite JPY and bonds not playing along, US equities (courtesy of the squeeze of the "most shorted") had rallied mightily this morning. Then, all of a sudden - reality hit with some rather ominous-sounding threats from Russia:
- *RUSSIA SAYS WILL RESPOND TO BROADER U.S., CANADA SANCTIONS
- *RUSSIA SAYS FORCED TO RESPOND TO 'UNFRIENDLY ACTIONS'
- *RUSSIA SAYS SANCTIONS 'NOT OUR METHOD'
So if 'sanctions' are not their method? Then what is? It seems that uncertainty was enough to spook bonds (yields plunged) and JPY (strength) and take the shine modestly off of VIX/Stocks.

The trick for Russia will be to use the D&C (Divide & Conquer) strategy effecttively against the US, while keeping the populace of the EU on its side.
They need to amplify the existing world and EU sentiment that the US is the World's Bully that must be stopped, and that the EU can and should have its own EU-Asia policy that is independent of DC pressure and blackmail.
The real battle is in PR exec offices, on how to pull of the PR campaign. Perhaps the Russian sanctions need to target the US and Canada, and not the EU, to back up the Message.

Does not sound good for the USD. If he is going to respond in economic kind, he has options there withe the "world reserve currency" the US keeps insisting is some sort of magical birthright.
Russia's options are many.
1) They can facilitate Iran breaking sanctions by helping them export oil via the Caspian into already existing Russian pipelines. They can reduce their own 10.5 mbpd output equivalently to prevent the price from falling and take a cut from Iran's proceeds to maintain revenue neutrality.
2) The new pipeline through North Korea to South Korea can be accelerated, with a generous transit fee to North Korea put into place, perhaps with some nuclear weapons advisors.
3) They can support China's claim to the three disputed oil regions of the Senkaku Islands (Japan), the Philippines disputed area and now the Vietnam disputed area.
4) Snipers to Libya, Sudan and Nigeria, to ensure oil flow from those sources does not increase.
5) Nat gas price increases, and perhaps some support for the Saudis anger at Qatar, which might extend to funding some disruption in Qatar and maybe damage to their nat gas flow.
Russia has many very inexpensive options to take.
6) And best of all - Demand all their gas transactions to be settled in gold.
Then Germany will demand all their physical bars or freeze.
There is no mention of gold in the article and no function for it in Russian society -- so this is not going to happen.
