East Ukraine's Donetsk Declares Itself Sovereign: Asks Putin To "Consider Absorption" Of Newly Independent State
Just as we predicted last week, Crimea 2.0 is officially here.

While Putin has not yet confirmed it will, begrudgingly, annex Donetsk as a reminder earlier today the Kremlin said it "respects" the independence vote and calls for a "civilized implementation." And what could be more civilized than annexing two regions of Ukraine in under two months without firing a single shot?

Reduce the size and power of government and you would quickly find that it hardly matters who gets elected. Putin can't afford to economically uplift Ukraine nor interested in losing pro-Russian votes there. Stable pro-Russian Ukraine is what Putin wants.
I think he wanted that in the past. However, after the second western backed coup in 10 years and the drive to separate Ukraine from the Russian zone of influence he's changed plans. Once Crimea was absorbed the chance to win elections where leaders looked east is gone. (2 million voters tied to Russia have now left Ukraine)So now he's moving to absorb those parts of Ukraine with the strongest historical ties (and economic links)to Russia. The maps on Zero hedge showing everything south and east from a line drawn between Kharkiv and Odesa plus the transnistra area of Moldova seems about right.

Crimea was likely expensive. But they have nat gas offshore.
Donetsk and the east carries the rest of the country economically. They have the rich agriculture areas AND the industrial areas. The west is mostly forest land.
It's not going to be all burden. The Chinese have leased farmland there for 70 yrs and those lease payments will stop going to Kiev.
You might want to gander at Ukrainian energy intensity before salivating over that industry. Cheap natgas will float that boat, but selling natgas cheaply causes other problems in the Rus. Cheap dirty coal fires competitieve steel/pipe production but has other costs. Nukes are in Kiev and the west. Only viable LT solution is to cut entergy intensity, but that is beaucoup CAPEX, problematic when you are cut off from western capital markets.

So your reasonable question should be: Why in he.l do they accept it? Well the answer is easier than you may think. Because you can pass it on to somebody else to your gain before it looses value. Thus borrowing to buy some other asser before you even sold your commodity is the equivalent of: you already passed it off before you even got it, etc. It's a simple game of hot potato. Things start getting interesting when the velocity of money goes up. Since nobody wants to be the guy holding the hot potatoe for smaller and smaller amounts amounts of time. At some point the players give up, usually after they discover that they can't find somebody to pass the potato on, fast enough to maintain their gain of giving their commmodities in exchange for that hot potato. At that point one player just decides to stop playing the game and start asking for hard assets rather than fiat money. From then on it snowballs to all players incredibly fast and the system breaks in miliseconds.

Apparently you forgot to see the >100% turnout in the Donetsk event that tried to pass for a "referendum". It's hard to be legitimate when you can submit ballots for your neighbors, or when some of the no-voters are kidnapped by the Russian-backed thugs.
