East Ukraine's Donetsk Declares Itself Sovereign: Asks Putin To "Consider Absorption" Of Newly Independent State

Tyler Durden's picture

Just as we predicted last week, Crimea 2.0 is officially here.

  • DONETSK PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC DECLARES ITSELF SOVEREIGN STATE: RIA
  • UKRAINIAN SEPARATIST LEADER PUSHILIN SAYS ASKING MOSCOW TO CONSIDER THE ABSORPTION OF DONETSK REGION INTO THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

While Putin has not yet confirmed it will, begrudgingly, annex Donetsk as a reminder earlier today the Kremlin said it "respects" the independence vote and calls for a "civilized implementation." And what could be more civilized than annexing two regions of Ukraine in under two months without firing a single shot?

Here is the official announcement by Donetsk leader Denis Pushilin:

As a reminder from last week:

Look no further than the Crimea case study:

  1. Donetsk declares independence
  2. Kiev, the west and NATO condemn the results, sternly refuse to accept the outcome, and issue more sanctions against Russian politicians and oligarchs
  3. Newly "independent" Donetsk requests military support from friendly Russia to defend its population, and the Russian tanks roll across the border

And as other regions in east and south Ukraine follow in the Donetsk' footsteps, assuring Russia a land connection to Crimea and cutting off Kiev from the Donbas industrial zones and the Slavyansk shale gas, Putin wins again.

In the meantime, while we await Russia's latest bearhug embrace of a formerly Ukrainian territory, here is Gazprom's take:

  • RUSSIAN PREMIER MEDVEDEV SAYS GAVE ORDER TO GAZPROM ON UKRAINE
  • GAZPROM TO MOVE UKRAINE TO PREPAYMENTS FOR GAS TOMORROW
  • GAZPROM TO HALT GAS SUPPLY TO UKRAINE JUNE 3 IF NO PAYMENT: CEO

It is amazing what one can achieve when one has all the commodity leverage.

This thing doesn't even surprise anyone.

I have to admit that if this all was pre-planned months ago by comrade Putin then this guy is really something. If he did do good things instead of bad then we could really live in paradise. Of course bad guys rarely turn into good guys.

I strongly believe in and seek to further individual liberty, and I wouldn't want to be a puppet to either side.  However, when given the choice between the two there, it's a no brainer to go with Russia's oligarchs instead of the West's.  It's hard to further liberty when you're on the losing side of a global war after all.  /sarc...maybe

Reduce the size and power of government and you would quickly find that it hardly matters who gets elected.  If we had a federal government that obeyed the limits placed on it by the Constitution, would a Romney or Obama (or Ron Paul) presidency really effect your life?  No, it would not.  Get government out of the economy and our lives.  Vote for a libertarian or a real conservative.

I think he wanted that in the past. However, after the second western backed coup in 10 years and the drive to separate Ukraine from the Russian zone of influence he's changed plans. Once Crimea was absorbed the chance to win elections where leaders looked east is gone. (2 million voters tied to Russia have now left Ukraine)So now he's moving to absorb those parts of Ukraine with the strongest historical ties (and economic links)to Russia. The maps on Zero hedge showing everything south and east from a line drawn between Kharkiv and Odesa plus the transnistra area of Moldova seems about right.

Good point.  But let's examine it.

Crimea was likely expensive.  But they have nat gas offshore.

Donetsk and the east carries the rest of the country economically.  They have the rich agriculture areas AND the industrial areas.  The west is mostly forest land.

It's not going to be all burden.  The Chinese have leased farmland there for 70 yrs and those lease payments will stop going to Kiev.

Mon, 05/12/2014 - 12:18 | 4751090 bobby02

You might want to gander at Ukrainian energy intensity before salivating over that industry. Cheap natgas will float that boat, but selling natgas cheaply causes other problems in the Rus. Cheap dirty coal fires competitieve steel/pipe production but has other costs. Nukes are in Kiev and the west. Only viable LT solution is to cut entergy intensity, but that is beaucoup CAPEX, problematic when you are cut off from western capital markets.

I agree with you on Ag, but at the end of the day it's pretty low value added.

When commodity owners stop accepting fiat money as a media of exchange, it's game over. OBVIOUS, but forgotten in the MSM.

So your reasonable question should be: Why in he.l do they accept it? Well the answer is easier than you may think.  Because you can pass it on to somebody else to your gain before it looses value. Thus borrowing to buy some other asser before you even sold your commodity is the equivalent of: you already passed it off before you even got it, etc. It's a simple game of hot potato.  Things start getting interesting when the velocity of money goes up. Since nobody wants to be the guy holding the hot potatoe for smaller and smaller amounts amounts of time. At some point the players give up, usually after they discover that they can't find somebody to pass the potato on, fast enough to maintain their gain of giving their commmodities in exchange for that hot potato. At that point one player just decides to stop playing the game and start asking for hard assets rather than fiat money. From then on it snowballs to all players incredibly fast and the system breaks in miliseconds.

A: Soon after the USD loses its GRC status, and those who depend on the largesse of the US.gov and its Fed have an "Oh SNAP!" moment.

Until then, both polar opposite demographic groups (the 0.1% and corporate welfare queens on the one hand, and poor-people welfare cases on the other hand) have what they need: Handouts.  The former get tons on free cash and the latter get just enough to keep from rebelling, while the reversion to a feudal state continues.

Russia does not need more territory anway. Ofc Putin cant say "No" outright but dragging this out indefinitely would be the best political option.

Are you suggesting that the easterners fight back? Like, no kidding. And they will.

But join what? The EU - so you can get looted and raped of everything you worked for, and now own? So the TBTF international banks can suck you dry? So you can turn your area into another Greece, or Cyprus, or Italy, of France, or Spain, or Portugal . . . ?

You don't get it, do you? These people are fighting for their lives.

They know that the Yulia Timoshenko Nazis - the spawn of Hitler - or the Nationalists - the legacy decedents of the Death Camp guards - will, in the words of sweet, innocent Yulia, "nuke them."

They know that Kiev already has their Death Warrant signed. They know that the EU / US / NATO/ FED / ECB unelected Deep State has no guilt, no shame, no conscience - they are classically defined psychotic sociopaths. Or in plain English, they are serial mass murderers who only respect a country that is willing to annihilate them - so that will back them off.

Ultimately, the whole bunch are bully cowards. They kill brown people with no means to defend themselves from 10,000 feet. They extoll hypocrites like Michelle Obama, who is all for saving "the girls," but sleeps with a man who nightly decides which country's "girls" will die in the morning with the next drone attacks.

Obama is a war criminal, guilty of crimes against humanity. If he were White, the international community would already have him behind bars. (What a perverted farce the Nobel Peace Prize is with him – a ruthless murderer who brags that “I’m good at killing people” – winning one.)

The US is so far from its ideals that it is unrecognizable. We’ve allowed Black Racists and the Gay Mafia to take over. We've allowed people who are so anti-American they won't even learn English - so we have dual language everything - to arrive unimpeded and take over entire regions of the country, fly the Mexican flag in place of the US flag, and have judges on the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals who order that students cannot wear the flag or wave it on a Mexican holiday because the US flag is a symbol and provoker of racism.

Criminals populate the Congress, the Admin, and the Judiciary.

We have an AG that should be in jail, offering TBTP free passes to other criminals who should join him. We have an MSM that is no longer made up of journalists, but rather now exists to promote the Looney Tunes Left-Wing 5% Fringe psychotic sociopaths that have turned our school into lockdown ganglands, made pre-adolescents sex objects for the Hollywood pervs, created Killing Fields in the inner cities, and effeminized males while "butching up" females.

It's time for someone to "reset" these whack jobs. If it starts with the courage of the Russian-speakers and others who will not allow themselves to be turned into rifle targets for the serial mass murderers, good.

As for people like yourself, burn in Hell.

And we have the Ivy League educated elites running the State Department and entrenched in every sphere of government. What do you expect?

And to add further insult - the lady from Arkansas may have a decent chance of capturing the Presidency for the next 8 years with the support of every liberal in the Country. After all - we need a female gender President to show the world how progressive we are.

Our country is surviving on the good will, hard work of the 50% who are still working and dumb luck momentum. Let's see what happens when that momentum diminishes greatly.

Logic never had anything to do with it, my friend.  Don't confuse "pretext" with "reason".

BTW, note that in the USSA cops and other LEAs are allowed to "pretext" (lie and deceive), but its Subjects are not allowed to.  Unless they want to go to jail.

In the USSA we are all "Free", but some are more Free than others.

Wasn't the State dept. policy "no more Islamic Bombs, period"?

By the way, there would be no "Iran problem" if the West (oil companies) had refrained in interfering with internal Iranian politics in the 1950's era.

Hello Donetsk and Luhansk,
Obama calls your election yesterday ILLEGAL.

You can call ILLEGAL this massive deception by omission done to the USA people by rarely showing these very instructive price histories:
http://www.showrealhist.com/yTRIAL.html

In the USA, federal felonies include fraud, which includes false advertising, which includes deception by omission.

from the article:

what could be more civilized than annexing two regions of Ukraine in under two months without firing a single shot?

Annexing first Austria, then Sudentenland and finally the rest of the Czech Republic without a shot being fired?

The hatred towards their own government makes a large number of zerohedgers (and contributors) blind and uncritical of anyone in any way opposed. The complete loss of perspective is astounding. To even consider this farcical exercise binding by international law, requires some lack of legal understanding or a very thick tin-foil hat.

I'm tired of the tuna tin storing, shotgun toting, bunker hunkering end-times hopers. A great start to living that post-apocalyptic dream would be to cut your internet connection.
