East Ukraine's Donetsk Declares Itself Sovereign: Asks Putin To "Consider Absorption" Of Newly Independent State

Tyler Durden's picture

Just as we predicted last week, Crimea 2.0 is officially here.

While Putin has not yet confirmed it will, begrudgingly, annex Donetsk as a reminder earlier today the Kremlin said it "respects" the independence vote and calls for a "civilized implementation." And what could be more civilized than annexing two regions of Ukraine in under two months without firing a single shot?

Here is the official announcement by Donetsk leader Denis Pushilin:

As a reminder from last week:

Look no further than the Crimea case study:

  1. Donetsk declares independence
  2. Kiev, the west and NATO condemn the results, sternly refuse to accept the outcome, and issue more sanctions against Russian politicians and oligarchs
  3. Newly "independent" Donetsk requests military support from friendly Russia to defend its population, and the Russian tanks roll across the border

And as other regions in east and south Ukraine follow in the Donetsk' footsteps, assuring Russia a land connection to Crimea and cutting off Kiev from the Donbas industrial zones and the Slavyansk shale gas, Putin wins again.

In the meantime, while we await Russia's latest bearhug embrace of a formerly Ukrainian territory, here is Gazprom's take:

It is amazing what one can achieve when one has all the commodity leverage.

Putin - I can't count that high

ilion's picture

This thing doesn't even surprise anyone.

I have to admit that if this all was pre-planned months ago by comrade Putin then this guy is really something. If he did do good things instead of bad then we could really live in paradise. Of course bad guys rarely turn into good guys.

RetiredSilverBug's picture

More people joining Russia is a good thing :)

lordylord's picture

These people are trading one set of chains for another.  Next time have a vote to rule over yourselves.

Joe Davola's picture

The "self's" we get to chose from this fall (and 2016) aren't exactly selling points for that self rule thing.

Oh regional Indian's picture

It's okay Joe, the world is going from self rule to selfie rule.

No one but a few apparantly give a rat's ass or a bee's sting anymore.

Pretty soon, it will be bongs galore, damn the day's troubles. World over, they just  need some time to get the mad-making strains everywhere.

Legal, GMO'd stuff.

Huxley wins.

Orwell wins.

What a win-win situation this is....

Manthong's picture

According to NWO types, this self-determination thing is not all that it is cracked up to be and must be stopped before things get out of control.

Patriot Eke's picture

I strongly believe in and seek to further individual liberty, and I wouldn't want to be a puppet to either side.  However, when given the choice between the two there, it's a no brainer to go with Russia's oligarchs instead of the West's.  It's hard to further liberty when you're on the losing side of a global war after all.  /sarc...maybe

Well you know, Vivek, a dram is better than a damn.....

Reduce the size and power of government and you would quickly find that it hardly matters who gets elected.  If we had a federal government that obeyed the limits placed on it by the Constitution, would a Romney or Obama (or Ron Paul) presidency really effect your life?  No, it would not.  Get government out of the economy and our lives.  Vote for a libertarian or a real conservative.

Go Scotland, for de-escalation, it might make the world just a little more bright, in one dark corner!

Putin can't afford to economically uplift Ukraine nor interested in losing pro-Russian votes there. Stable pro-Russian Ukraine is what Putin wants.

FMR Bankster's picture

I think he wanted that in the past. However, after the second western backed coup in 10 years and the drive to separate Ukraine from the Russian zone of influence he's changed plans. Once Crimea was absorbed the chance to win elections where leaders looked east is gone. (2 million voters tied to Russia have now left Ukraine)So now he's moving to absorb those parts of Ukraine with the strongest historical ties (and economic links)to Russia. The maps on Zero hedge showing everything south and east from a line drawn between Kharkiv and Odesa plus the transnistra area of Moldova seems about right.

CrashisOptimistic's picture

Good point.  But let's examine it.

Crimea was likely expensive.  But they have nat gas offshore.

Donetsk and the east carries the rest of the country economically.  They have the rich agriculture areas AND the industrial areas.  The west is mostly forest land.

It's not going to be all burden.  The Chinese have leased farmland there for 70 yrs and those lease payments will stop going to Kiev.

bobby02's picture

You might want to gander at Ukrainian energy intensity before salivating over that industry. Cheap natgas will float that boat, but selling natgas cheaply causes other problems in the Rus. Cheap dirty coal fires competitieve steel/pipe production but has other costs. Nukes are in Kiev and the west. Only viable LT solution is to cut entergy intensity, but that is beaucoup CAPEX, problematic when you are cut off from western capital markets.

I agree with you on Ag, but at the end of the day it's pretty low value added.

When commodity owners stop accepting fiat money as a media of exchange, it's game over. OBVIOUS, but forgotten in the MSM.

So your reasonable question should be: Why in he.l do they accept it? Well the answer is easier than you may think.  Because you can pass it on to somebody else to your gain before it looses value. Thus borrowing to buy some other asser before you even sold your commodity is the equivalent of: you already passed it off before you even got it, etc. It's a simple game of hot potato.  Things start getting interesting when the velocity of money goes up. Since nobody wants to be the guy holding the hot potatoe for smaller and smaller amounts amounts of time. At some point the players give up, usually after they discover that they can't find somebody to pass the potato on, fast enough to maintain their gain of giving their commmodities in exchange for that hot potato. At that point one player just decides to stop playing the game and start asking for hard assets rather than fiat money. From then on it snowballs to all players incredibly fast and the system breaks in miliseconds.

Pre-planned by the people who are in charge of Obama and Putin.  Putin and Obama are reading off of cue cards.  Well, maybe Putin can memorize his lines.  Obummer needs a teleprompter due to his obvious learning deficiencies.

Hopefully, one day, all that will be left of the USSA is D.C.

Except that there is no USSA, there never has been a USSA, and that there will likely not be a USSA.

looks like a couple of regime stooges came in a gave us all down votes.  nice work, boys, that'll really sway public opinion.

At least it has more legitimacy than any of the votes for Russia to occupy Ukraine soil (Crimea, Donetsk, etc.).

You really think Washington could let the country's primary oil source leave?  hahahahah

"How long before American States begin declaring their independence and asking Russia for protection?"

A: Soon after the USD loses its GRC status, and those who depend on the largesse of the US.gov and its Fed have an "Oh SNAP!" moment.

Until then, both polar opposite demographic groups (the 0.1% and corporate welfare queens on the one hand, and poor-people welfare cases on the other hand) have what they need: Handouts.  The former get tons on free cash and the latter get just enough to keep from rebelling, while the reversion to a feudal state continues.
