Glenn Greenwald On The 2016 Elections – "They'll Probably Have A Gay Person After Hillary"

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

Glenn Greenwald is not one known for pulling punches, and in this excellent interview with GQ Magazine titled, The Man Who Knows Too Much, he is in particularly rare form. Credit must be given to the interviewer, who asked a wide range of very interesting questions that allowed Greenwald the opportunity to discuss a lot more than merely his Pulitzer Prize winning journalism on the Edward Snowden documents. From the fact that the biggest NSA stories have yet to be published, to thoughts on the 2016 elections, this interview really has it all.

Here are some of what I thought were the most interesting and informative excerpts. From GQ:

How much more is there to release—and what burden do you feel to get it out there?

We published the first article [about the NSA collecting Verizon phone records] while I was in Hong Kong last June and won’t stop until we’re done. I think we will end the big stories in about three months or so [June or July 2014]. I like to think of it as a fireworks show: You want to save your best for last. There’s a story that from the beginning I thought would be our biggest, and I’m saving that. The last one is the one where the sky is all covered in spectacular multicolored hues. This will be the finale, a big missing piece. Snowden knows about it and is excited about it.

What do you think would happen if Snowden were to fly from, say, Moscow to New York today?

I think it would be a huge media circus, and then he would be instantly arrested and probably rendered incommunicado for the entire duration of his judicial proceeding on the grounds that he has classified information that could damage the United States. The prosecutors would say he would have to be kept away from media. He would just be disappeared. Rendered completely invisible and mute.

When Daniel Ellsberg was on trial [for leaking the Pentagon Papers], he was allowed to speak out and defend himself.Which is why Ellsberg wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post last July saying Snowden was absolutely right to flee, because America has changed so drastically. Snowden would never be released on bail and would never get a fair trial.

Yeah, like the incident you quote in the book about Bill Keller [former executive editor of The New York Times] on the BBC…

Yeah, where he’s boasting about the fact that they don’t publish things without the government being happy with what they’re doing. And it obviously has resulted in the suppression of all kinds of important stories, which is the most inexcusable thing that can happen in journalism. And that has happened repeatedly at the Times. I think they’ve essentially become this mouthpiece for those in power, perhaps not consciously. When I make this critique, people at The New York Times are offended, because they actually don’t believe that it’s happening. And they’re not lying. It’s a more subtle dynamic than the government marching in and issuing memos to the Timesabout what they should and shouldn’t publish. It’s just a cultural approach to the news that basically says that the parameters of what can be discussed and viewed as reasonable are the ones that are endorsed by the most powerful financial and political factions in New York and Washington. They’re reflecting the mind-set of those elite groups rather than challenging them or confronting them. Obviously there are exceptions. There’s some good journalists there; they do some good journalism; they’ve done some adversarial journalism. It’s not an absolute, pure, constant, all-consuming formula. But in general, that’s become the posture of the Times.

So that goes with your concept of adversarial journalism—and the fact that you’re sitting here on your porch in Rio, not having lunch with anybody in D.C. right now, not having lunch with anybody in Manhattan.

And I don’t want to be, either! This is why I’m so optimistic about the future of journalism, based on what the Internet has permitted. I do think it is a huge change that the journalists who have been at the center of what everybody already knows is the biggest story of the year, if not the decade—meaning myself and Laura—didn’t go to journalism school. We didn’t intern at The New York Times or The Washington Post. We didn’t go to work for one of the five or six big media corporations that impose the standard set of orthodoxies about how you write and think. And we didn’t attach ourselves to those institutions. We didn’t make ourselves dependent upon the standard range of sources. And then, once I was in the position where people wanted to hire, basically, my blog, I was able to negotiate full editorial independence. So I’ve been able to forge my career, not only without depending on any of those processes and those people, but staying as far away from them as I can. I have zero incentive to avoid alienating them.

What’s the Platonic ideal for a journalist? If you can just close your eyes and imagine this thing you’re doing, what does it look like twenty years from now?

The thing is, I don’t actually think there is one Platonic, pure way of doing journalism. I think the public and the political culture benefits from different forms of journalism that expose different kinds of things. But for me, the core of journalism is that it provides a check on people who we empower, by making certain that they can’t hide the corrupt and abusive things they do with that power. People wield power in all sorts of different ways. It can be local police officers. It can be the CIA. It can be school administrators. It can be corrupt corporations. All forms of human power are susceptible to abuse and likely to be abused, and transparency—shining a light on that which they’re trying to hide and that shouldn’t be hidden—is one critical way of evening the playing field. And that, to me, is what journalism in its purest essence is about.

Can you talk about the difference between fear and fearlessness?

To me, fear is like the most corrosive state of mind there is. And usually fears are about things that don’t actually exist and that aren’t real. And so I think fearlessness, meaning not allowing yourself to be limited by fears of things that aren’t real, is the most important state of being you can have. That’s the most empowering thing there is.

Now for my favorite part of the entire interview, where he just skewers the sham that is the American political process…

How do you feel about the early presidential jockeying?

Hillary is banal, corrupted, drained of vibrancy and passion. I mean, she’s been around forever, the Clinton circle. She’s a fucking hawk and like a neocon, practically. She’s surrounded by all these sleazy money types who are just corrupting everything everywhere. But she’s going to be the first female president, and women in America are going to be completely invested in her candidacy. Opposition to her is going to be depicted as misogynistic, like opposition to Obama has been depicted as racist. It’s going to be this completely symbolic messaging that’s going to overshadow the fact that she’ll do nothing but continue everything in pursuit of her own power. They’ll probably have a gay person after Hillary who’s just going to do the same thing.

The best part of the above statement is that, because he himself is openly gay, he can make such commentary without being labeled “homophobic.”

I hope this happens so badly, because I think it’ll be so instructive in that regard. It’ll prove the point. Americans love to mock the idea of monarchy, and yet we have our own de facto monarchy. I think what these leaks did is, they demonstrated that there really is this government that just is the kind of permanent government that doesn’t get affected by election choices and that isn’t in any way accountable to any sort of democratic transparency and just creates its own world off on its own.

As I and many others have pointed out before, there is a good chance 2016 will see Jeb Bush vs. Hilary Clinton. Bush, Clinton, Clinton, Bush, Bush, Obama, Obama and then…well yep, Bush or Clinton.

American Feudalism.

That's the question that can bring together angry white overweight males and screaming billionaires like the Koch brothers. The totally disenfranchised united with the ubers, the masters and the slaves. Then shall begin the latter days of the empire.

World "progressivism" was Rothchild funded just like "Bolshevism". Destroying Christ is action item number one, but it must be done with a brand new appealing agenda. Hence, Black, Woman and Gay Presidents. It's the "alternative" offer to Christ. Don't worry, they will make more.

Exactly, the state assumes the position of the only higher power...
Has naught to do with religion, spirituality, etc. Simply is to solidify the lead of the state above all...
All men have higher powers if only in the final analysts, their very own ego.

Those who 'quote' Christ, rarely know what he said or why or how or when.  Just make it up as you go along, because the ones you are making these "quotes" to have no idea if you know what you are taliking about and to fearful to challenge you.   Just like Mr Greenwald says.

So the 'word' is not the deal breaker, the messenger is.  He know not of what he speak.  This is why radical politics, religeon, and MSM have become intollerable...they are based on ignorance.

Nehweh - I won't answer for Tahoe but I enjoy the teaching of Christ. "The truth shall set you free". He taught beneficial concepts and used analogies as to how they could benefit or cause failure by ignoring them. I am a pandeist.

I know what you mean about Christians being judgemental at times. Such should read there own bible where Christ says to remove the rafter out of your own eye before trying to remove the splinter in your brothers eye.

While I encourage all to read the gospels, it is not the end all or be all of human learning and development. But the gospels do a great job describing beneficial concepts in practical living. I pray but seleom go to church because of your sentiment. If I want a drink or smoke I do it in moderation. "Everything in moderation" - Paul. Another one I liked from Paul was when he was discussing churches being set up and they started to squabble over details, forgetting the importance of concepts. He said
"Above all use reason."

The prophet Daniel calculated the reformation of Israel almost 4000 years in advance to 1947. One can take a calculator after reading the passage. That is statistical probability at the quantum level. As for me there is a why behind such ability and as one who does believe in God I think that is part of our collective learning process, to ask why. For example fasting deprives the body of minerals needed to be processed for the brain. Adrenaline replaces it, which increases beta brain waves which heightens perception.
A few brains created the quantum computer not the other way around.

TahoeBilly - Yep you got it. By focusing on the concept of equality over liberty and justice it creates wedge issues. Think of a pyramid. Pyramids how we also organize thought we are a 3 dimensional species.

At the top of the pyramid is concepts. Liberty, justice, truth. The opposites also exist. Slavery, injustice, lies.

Under the concepts in the middle of the pyramid you have issues like gay marriage, abortion, firearm regulation. At the bottom of the pyramid is details, lots of them. Those at the top understand this so they push in the media the issues and the myriad of details surrounding them. This minimizes conceptual level thinking and creativity.

If you want to know how to act and also to be successful learn to consider the concept behind an issue. This leads to perspective. The details for planning become important afterward. If the devil is in the details that is because the concepts are ignored.

The revolution had support because of the conceptual framework of it's reasoning. It included the concept of equality but under the concept of justice.

No equal application of law means injustice as we see now. So the equality pushing is now a phony one. Americans as the majority no longer care about women, black of gay politicians. We care about injustices, lies and slavery (or substitute exploitation). To restore a Republic, justice must take precedence. All must be equal under the law - not minorities getting blessed for votes while whites are tax targets to support the largesse.

We try to teach about the issue or detail of central banking and its corrupting influence on politics. Note how people's eyes glaze over on detail. One must start by teaching that the healthy concepts have been turned on there head like liberty, truth and justice. Then letting someone know the bankers stole all the money by bribing politicians makes mores sense to them. The people get worn down by those at the top being mired in endless issues and details, they need to be awoken to think conceptually again. Short discussions as a teaser are best and those with an ear will come back asking more questions. Keep all Q&A short. I like to tell people when they respond in different ways "well, it's food for thought."

Cathartes - Some of your readers here need helpful hints:

"The best way to control the opposition is to lead it ourselves." - V.I. Lenin

The elites look down on other races, and they look down on women. How very convenient for posterity that things are seen to unravel during the administrations of America's first negro and female presidents!

Tue, 05/13/2014 - 10:52 | 4754745 Cathartes Aura
Cathartes Aura's picture

absolutely - and with the current figurehead, according to majority posters here, a twofer, "gay" and Negro!  one could not invent a more suitable TARGET for the hatred.

and of course, it's not just the "elite" who "look down on women" - Hedger's aren't all that elite, yet these threads are full of hatred for anything not perceived as "them" - white, heterosexual, "christian" men - but only for fictitious porno-style-babes, a very narrow demoGraphic created especially for them by those who feed the media-porn. . . very few will acknowledge the females in their families - their wives, partners, daughters, mothers - as humans to be respected.  the disconnect is thorough.

yes those who write the scripts, globally & in the tiny minds, have done a grand job for setting up a Fall. . . cultivate hate locally, where the terror will truly find the targets as things continue to unravel - then create "heroic leaders" and horrific wars. . .

people will BEG to be led to new order.  game over.

"cultivate hate locally"

Hmmm I guess these elites of yours have been at it, nonstop, at all times, in all places, for, like 100,000 years... wow, kudos to them, I'm impressed. The historically omnipresent cultures of honor with their extreme xenophobia, absolute ethnocentrism, generational feuds, and nonstop social violence was all just an elitist plot!

I could easily invent a far more hateable target, try this: middle-aged libertarian vegan stoner pansexual lapsed-Jewish (with one Muslim parent) black-Hispanic m-to-f transgender druid divorcee rapper. Something to offend every type and kind of fool, and there are a lot, in America.

"very few will acknowledge the females in their families - their wives, partners, daughters, mothers - as humans to be respected"

Care to back up this claim? I'm pretty sure what the people to whom you are referring feel toward "fictitious porno-style-babes" is not what you would call "respect".

not "my" elites Toten, unless you want to blame me for pointing out controlled cultural narratives, and truly obvious ones at that.

if one merely takes the most oft-quoted religious-textuals, global and local, factors in nationstate flag-team-wavers, uni-formed and armed to continue conflicts, then adds a large pile of steamin' porn - and realises who really owns most of the porn industry-profits - stir it until all ingredients are completely dis-solved.

you have the stinkin' soup we witness today, kept on the boil over centuries of true-believers.  is this "natural" or is it by design?  eye of the beholder, I guess.

not so sure why you don't see the inherent hatred for "females" in the daily threads, from the avatars to the body parts named in so many posts - "cunts" are a true fave, no? - and while I agree that there is zero "respect" shown - few will acknowledge healthy love and respect for the females in their families, while daily filling their posts with obvious loathing for "othered" females.  all this while the absolute majority of the string-pullers globally are - wait for it - white men.

I will add, there are some who write of their partners and daughters with care. . . but the majority are content with the content.

Conspiracy involving systems being corrupted, sleazy motives, greed, general human stupidity etc., those make sense. Conspiracy involving long-term planning, extremely sophisticated organization, high intelligence - I'm sorry but I don't give the human race that kind of credit.

People can have many concurrent and competing motives for doing things, it's pretty irrelevant to impact. Would I assume Greenwalds motives are all pristine? Of course not. But on balance he seems to my mind someone acting sincerely in the pursuit of truth, ditto Snowden.

And a few variables can turn a simple system into a complex one, that doesn't mean there was intelligent design behind it..people 'connecting dots' often place intelligence where there isn't any.

I have mentioned the revolution has already begun it is one of money. Lets's hope it stays that way and doesnt need to get violent. Time will tell.

Carthates Aura - I upvoted you because of your statement about freeing one's own mind first. It is wise to be skeptical. As for me I know how difficult it was to set up an educational platform, keep content fresh, maamage the costs. It was philanthropy. So was Glenn Greenwald or Yves Smith. So if these people get funded to cover cost to get up daily and sacrifice there entire to promote truth, I am less skeptical after several years they can just be bought out as controller opposition. Why would Greenwald with being bought at $250 M continue in the business?

Outcomes of power struggles are messy. Consider when the Soviet Union collapsed. They regained 65% of the Duma afterward. Some think collapse will usher in all new people. You would be wrong to think that. They are forced to share power with self-interested groups supporting resumption of growth for personal gain. Why reforms happen. It would be great if people did everything out of the goodness of heart but our species is a long ways off toward that end.

I understand your perspective here, but I maintain that Greenwald is a purchased product, and needs to Work as Described by the Warranty on his Package.

he's a careerist within the system - he's not a "whistleblower" in any guise, save a pied-piper.

he doesn't "need" extra-ordinary funding to spill his "secret guts" from "snowden" - he is a calculating piece of the system that binds the minds to a particular narrative.

no reforms forthcoming from this ongoing system - but change IS inherent, and some-things will continue to roll like tanks over humanity.

Perhaps we should not just focus on the what but also start asking why...at least for the sake of healthy skepticism...

Deeds speak but is all the nuance in the language being potentially analyzed?

From a game theory perspective this whole scenario could simply be a turf war between the human intelligence (HUMINT) realm that has traditionally driven the intel power agenda (read: CIA) and the rise of the influence of signal intelligence (SIGINT) gathering (hello NSA...thanks smartphones!)

Which if true would put Snowden advocating for Mom, apple pie, the American way and perhaps something/someone else as well...?

I heartily endorse all Snowden’s revelations to date but wish he would change the game instead of just playing it....

Deeds not only speak by what they say but also by what surrounds them.  In this case the medium for Snowden’s message is less than pure (see: USAID’s sordid POTUS connections below).

I’m hoping Snowden is real but that said, the revelations of the violations are only as good as what we choose to do with them politically to ensure our freedoms are not just stolen in another form.

USAID...it’s not all good

According to a published report in the September Rock Creek Free Press of Washington, D.C., investigative reporter Wayne Madsen says Obama’s mother Ann Dunham worked “on behalf of a number of CIA front operations, including the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Ford Foundation.” The East-West Center had long been affiliated with CIA activities in the Asia-Pacific region, Madsen says.

What’s more, Obama’s father, Barack Obama Sr., arrived in Hawaii from Kenya as part of a CIA program to identify and train Africans who would be useful to the Agency in its Cold War operations against the Soviets, Madsen says. Obama Sr. divorced Ms. Dunham in 1964.

Ms. Dunham married Lolo Soetoro the following year, a man Madsen says assisted in the violent CIA coup against Indonesian President Sukarno that claimed a million lives. Obama’s mother taught English for USAID, “which was a major cover for CIA activities in Indonesia and throughout Southeast Asia,” Madsen reports. That USAID was a cover for CIA covert operations in Laos was admitted by its administrator Dr. John Hannah on Metromedia News. Madsen says the organization was also a cover for the CIA in Indonesia.

Of course Obama's father was not Barack Obama Sr, but Frank Marshall Davis, resident in Hawaii at the time of Obama's birth (the real reason for the Kenya story is to misdirect from this, IMO).

And Jimmy Carter's dad was.........Joe Kennedy.  Rosalyn Carter was Joe Kennedy's secretary back when he was an ambassador or something.  Jimmy didn't just fall off a turnip truck.

ahhh palmereldritch, so many layers, so many chapters to read, and taken over time - so many books in the narrative - history is encyclopedic, no?  gotta read the whole set.

I need to reduce it to the basics to run it all past my bullshit detector - and the most basic "tell" for me is:

is the story being fed in weekly bite-sized chunks, a TeeVee/HBO format of episodes with strategically placed cliff-hangers?  because THIS is how the minds are trained to Think.  therefore, story is intentional.

does the story being fed have heroic gatekeepers?  like "edgy but culturally-respected authors"?  Greenwald so qualifies for this tag, as does Taibbi, Scahill, etc. - all neatly bundled into the Omidyar Group, perfectly arranged for truthiness.  therefore, story is intentional.

then I start to look at the actual storyline, for the *nudge-wink* factors. . . no need to go into all the extraneous details here, but suffice to say - that "Snowden" is supposedly in the new Manly-Man's Man Putin-Land, and that the nukes are being stroked into tumescence, with many little story-lines (Nuland, PNAC-peeps, mercenaries, voters) still being fed episodically, much of it on the controlled Mainstream Newsy News Net-Works. . .

tells me there is MORE than the daily-obvious happening here.  and so I withhold my overall agreement, and I continue to watch.

snowden didn't 'reveal' anything that hadn't already been front-run in 'lunatic fringe' forums by several years.

And thats the thing.  New info is popping up all the time.  But it always appears first as 'unsubstantiated rumor' and 'speculation', because thats the only way to truly anonymously leak information.   "You can lead a horse to water", as the saying goes.

I was thinking the same thing. If he is so noble why risk being suicided before getting the info out that will change the world? Not dirty , sleazy money? Yup.
