US Holds Massive Nuclear Weapons Exercise "To Deter And Detect Strategic Attacks" Days After Russian Drill

Tyler Durden's picture

Late last week, in what should not have been a surprise to anyone (because supposedly it was announced "far in advance") but was a major shock due to its intensity and expansiveness, Russia held a massive "simulated massive nuclear attack" drill, coming at a time just ahead of the Donetsk referendum, which may have been pre-scheduled and for foreign policy reasons was hailed as a "non-event", but judging by the amount of production that went into the accompanying video clip, this particular drill was dripping with symbolism aimed squarely at NATO and the US.

So now it is America's turn to retaliate. As the U.S. Strategic Command reported earlier, the US will conduct Exercise Global Lightning 14 from May 12-16 in coordination with other combatant commands, services, and appropriate U.S. government agencies "to deter and detect strategic attacks against the U.S. and its allies."

Stratcom was quick to point out that Exercise Global Lightning 14 has been planned for more than a year and is based on a notional scenario.  It also added that the "timing of the exercise is unrelated to real-world events" but only those who believed that Russia massive nuclear drill was also unrelated to world will fall for this particular embellishment. As Defense One observes, according to Mark Schneider, a former U.S. Defense Department nuclear strategy official, told the Washington Free Beacon that Russia’s drill last week seemed aimed at sending a message of “nuclear intimidation” to the United States and NATO over Ukraine. He noted that Moscow typically stages its atomic exercises in the fall.

Meanwhile, Romania on Saturday sought clarification from Russia on its official policy following a tweet from a high-profile Russian minister that warned he might try to enter Romanian air space in a heavy bomber, Reuters reported.

After a plane he was a traveling in was blocked from entering Romanian air space, Russian Deputy Prime Minister  Dmitry Rogozin sent out a tweet that stated, “Upon U.S. request, Romania has closed its air space for my plane. Ukraine doesn’t allow me to pass through again. Next time I’ll fly on board Tu-160.” Rogozin, who supervises his country’s large weapons industry, is under U.S. and European Union sanctions.

The Romanian foreign ministry requested that Russia specify whether the deputy prime minister’s tweet represented “the Russian Federation’s official position.”

Romania “believes the threat of using a Russian strategic bomber plane by a Russian deputy prime minister is a very grave statement under the current regional context,” the ministry said

However, Russia was last week - now it's America's turn: the units included in the US exercise are bomber wings that will fly approximately 10 B-52 Stratofortresses and up to six B-2 Spirit bombers "to demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness in the training scenarios throughout the continental U.S."

So if you see a massive nuclear bomber flying overhead with a full nuclear armament, don't panic - tis but a drill.

“This exercise provides unique training opportunities to incorporate the most current technology and techniques in support of our mission.  Continued focus and investment in our strategic capabilities allow USSTRATCOM to deter, dissuade, and defeat current and future threats to the U.S. and our allies,” said Adm. Cecil Haney, commander, U.S. Strategic Command.

Those curious can find more information at USSTRATCOM Public Affairs, (402) 294-4130, or via email:

We, on the other hand, will await the YouTube clip that goes with Global Lightning 14 and grade it on content, difficulty, and artistic creativity. After all we already have the Russians as a benchmark.

Major T. J. "King" Kong: Well, boys, I reckon this is it - nuclear combat toe to toe with the Roosskies. Now look, boys, I ain't much of a hand at makin' speeches, but I got a pretty fair idea that something doggone important is goin' on back there. And I got a fair idea the kinda personal emotions that some of you fellas may be thinkin'. Heck, I reckon you wouldn't even be human bein's if you didn't have some pretty strong personal feelin's about nuclear combat. I want you to remember one thing, the folks back home is a-countin' on you and by golly, we ain't about to let 'em down. I tell you something else, if this thing turns out to be half as important as I figure it just might be, I'd say that you're all in line for some important promotions and personal citations when this thing's over with. That goes for ever' last one of you regardless of your race, color or your creed. Now let's get this thing on the hump - we got some flyin' to do.

Several animal species do this sort of feather showing or fur bristling exhibition to try an intimidate each other before any real violence starts. It is far more efficient for both sides if one party decides to back down. But in the human world, we know all too well that neither side is in the least intimidated or even much affected. Thus, these shows must be for us peanut gallery spectators. Good to see we are so important.

In the case of Russia, they have been sidelined and supposedly "defeated" (as the Soviet Union), so one could argue that they actually make a point by flexing their muscles to show they are back on the chess board with all their pieces and ready for big time action. But the west certainly does not have much to show. That they still have some weapons left after all the years of disarming?

We carried a single last-resort nuclear rocket in the weapons bays of all of our stateside fighter/interceptors. They supposedly could knock out a whole squadron of B-52s with one shot; unfortunately using them also guaranteed the self-destruction of the fighter plane firing it. When was that you ask? Uh, 1966.

This reminds me of the puff piece 60 Minutes did a couple of years ago on the first and only viewing and filming ever allowed inside an active ICBM silo. Analog circuitry, monochrome crts, and incandescent nixie warning lights, lol. The motor control center was right out of Buck Rogers. I'm guessing the "silo" probably hadn't been in use for a good fifty years, but the idiots on 60 Minutes thought they'd pulled off the scoop of the century.

Every Swiss at home and at work is supposed to have a seat in a 15psi blast and radiation shelter. The gun culture is alive and well in Switzerland. They are armed to the teeth. All able-bodied males serve in the military and reserves until age 50 as I recall. Then they serve in civil defense organizations in various capacities. They also take their automatic weapons home and keep them. The crime rate is low as one would expect.

Maybe someone on the ground in Switzerland could give us a report on the current state of civil defense.  It’s been a while since I was in Zurich and my Schweizerdeutch is rusty.

@ laeagle. Throughout human history people have thought that their defenses were invulnerable. Famous last words. The U.S. has given a death sentence to Americans. You look at the countries of Israel and Switzerland and the people there have good chance of survival. China and Russia have taken similar approaches to safeguarding at least part of their population...

...One other thing. As children we all were taught to prepare and to take shelter during an attack. Now as adults we are regarded as domestic terrorists for doing exactly what the government taught us as children to do. We are all just suppose to die during an attack because the government knows what is best for us. This is the government you think is invulnerable that can’t even live by their own words to their own popualtion???? This includes trying to disarm the civilian militia and annihilate the 2nd Amendment that is the back up to the armed forces and security of all of us. That sure doesn’t install much faith in the self defense of this country."

Duck and cover is the plan for the majority of us???

The elite have their shelters though, don't they.

This is criminal.

The Swiss and the Israelies got this one right for today's world.

Meet the Americans Who Put Together the Coup in Kiev (3/25)

If the US State Department's Victoria Nuland had not said "Fuck the EU," few outsiders at the time would have heard of Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt, the man on the other end of her famously bugged telephone call. But now Washington's man in Kiev is gaining fame as the face of the CIA-style "destabilization campaign" that brought down Ukraine's monumentally corrupt but legitimately elected President Viktor Yanukovych.

"Geoffrey Pyatt is one of these State Department high officials who does what he’s told and fancies himself as a kind of a CIA operator," laughs Ray McGovern, who worked for 27 years as an intelligence analyst for the agency. "It used to be the CIA doing these things," he tells Democracy Now. "I know that for a fact." Now it's the State Department, with its coat-and-tie diplomats, twitter and facebook accounts, and a trick bag of goodies to build support for American policy.

A retired apparatchik, the now repentant McGovern was debating Yale historian Timothy Snyder, a self-described left-winger and the author of two recent essays in The New York Review of Books – "The Haze of Propaganda" and "Fascism, Russia, and Ukraine." Both men speak Russian, but they come from different planets.

LOL. I could not measure it. Believe me, that sucker was low. I was expecting it to plow into the mountainscape at any second. The Air Force out of Malmstrom in Great Falls was perfecting a new low-altitude-auto-terrain-following radar guidance system as I recall. That was the strategy to get underneath Soviet radar. Otherwise, it would be like Gary Powers - taken out even at 60,000 feet. The BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fucker) was a low-level penetration bomber.

“In November 1959, to improve the aircraft's combat capabilities in the changing strategic environment, SAC initiated the Big Four modification program (also known as Modification 1000) for all operational B-52s except early B models.[78][127] The program was completed by 1963.[128] The four modifications were the ability to launch AGM-28 Hound Dog standoff nuclear missiles and ADM-20 Quail decoys, an advanced electronic countermeasures (ECM) suite, and upgrades to perform the all-weather, low-altitude (below 500 feet or 150 m) interdiction mission in the face of advancing Soviet missile-based air defenses”

See what it said,  “below 500 feet”.

I doubt atheists would run the world any better, but at least they aren't full of shit. I'm somewhat offended that a god fearing nation like the US is one of the most dangerous to world peace. There's really something quite fucked up about it. I'd love to listen in on the prayer the B52 bomber pilot recites as he releases his nuke. Now that would be amusing for a nano-second.

The Antichrist resides in the Vatican.

The 'real date of the apocalypse' has been ongoing for the last two thousand years. As for The Day of the LORD, no man knows the day or hour, not the angels on heaven, nor even the Son. Only the Father.

far as i know the AC is still restrained, far as i know no one who seems to have any authority has declared any prophecy fufilled since Peter did, instead more was written (for example, Paul writing "now you know 'what' restrains him") btw, the "what" is an angel, not a person, which would be a 'who'. however, one of the many antichrists sure looks like a clone of an egyption king, married to a dude. oh, and his kids are uh, clones too.but i digress.

yes, you're correct the war has been on going. here's an interesting verse:John 12:31. "now is the judgement" its an interesting verse, seeing as John wrote Revelation too. but the day is near, but i can't say anymore.

Dharma: Who is truly happy? What is the greatest wonder?  What is the path?  And what is the news?

Yudhishthira:  He who has no debts is truly happy.  Day after day countless people die.  Yet the living wish to live forever.  O Lord, what can be a greater wonder? Argument leads to no certain conclusion, the Srutis are different from one another; there is not even one Rishi whose opinion can be accepted by all; the truth about Dharma and duty is hid in caves of our heart: therefore, that alone is the path along which the great have trod.  This world full of ignorance is like a pan. The sun is fire, the days and nights are fuel.  The months and the seasons constitute the wooden ladle.  Time is the cook that is cooking all creatures in that pan (with such aids); this is the news.

Mystics of the Church: The Third Secret of Fatima Explained

"If Our Lady of the Rosary could foresee her eventual triumph, she would equally have known in 1917 that the Third Secret would not be published till the end of the Century."

Yes, which is why Our Lady of the Rosary made sure we had the key sentence, "In Portugal, the dogma of the Faith will always be preserved."

The Third Secret of Fatima warns of widespread apostasy in the Church.

In September 1952 Father Joseph Schweigl was entrusted by Pope Pius XII with a secret mission to interrogate Sister Lucy about the Third Secret. He subsequently stated:

"I cannot reveal anything of what I learned at Fatima concerning the Third Secret, but I can say that it has two parts: one concerns the Pope; the other logically (although I must say nothing) would have to be the continuation of the words: "In Portugal, the dogma of the Faith will always be preserved."

The Secret seems to deal with the apostasy and chastisementamong other things, that the great apostasy in the Church will begin at the top [i.e. the highest hierarchy in Rome]

Read it HERE

I forget to mention earlier that the Second Secret of Fatima relates to the Consecration of Russia, and failure in carrying it out will bring the severe consequences for the world. [Indeed I came to the stories about the Fatima Apparitions because of this 2nd Secret.]

From what I read, the Consecration of Russia has not been fulfilled [properly] to date [the Vatican, the many Popes since 1960s failed to carry it out]; hence, the world won't stay peaceful. Please refer to above links for further info (in particular the topmost one about the impostor.)

Yeah, sure...

Any launch of ICBMs is always announced between US and Russia far in advance, strange that "U.S. Defense Department nuclear strategy official" doesn't know about it...

Russian strategic forces drill was announced to US in October of 2013.

What all of U.S. Defense Department nuclear strategy officials are smoking?

US drill of 10 B-52s and 6 B-2s is does not need to be announced since no ICBMs are launched. hmm...  May be this one is a message of “nuclear intimidation” to the United States and NATO over Ukraine

Why couldn't any country with nuclear capabilities just plant  nuclear weapons in every major US city that could be detonated by a martyr or remote signal (like a cell phone)? These nuclear sabre rattling exercises seem completely unnecessary as nuclear weapons don't need to be fired via missile or dropped from a bomber. Just put a remotely activated nuke in X city and dial xxx xxx xxxx to detonate.

To show its military might, US dropped 2 atomic bombs on Japan, killing 185,000.

Russia sent a Vostok payload delivery system into orbit, which was retrofitted to carry a human (Yuri Gagarin) and 7 months later it detonated the world's most powerful nuclear bomb - Tzar Bomba. The message was strategic: "We can send payloads anywhere we want... and this is what the payload might be." It was heard loud and clear, as the shocks from the explosion circled the earth almost 3 times.
