Why Are Ukraine Troops Using UN Helicopters, Russia Foreign Minister Asks

Tyler Durden's picture

A clearly irritated Sergei Lavrov - Russia's Minister of Foreign Affairs - appeared on Bloomberg TV this morning and warned that "Ukraine is as close to civil war as you can get." The minister further exclaimed that Russia "would like to understand how helicopters with a UN logo were used against protesters in the south-east," adding that "Russia has serious suspicions that mercenaries from the USA are acting in Ukraine’s south-east." Furthermore, Lavrov warned that "attempts to force Ukraine into NATO may have a strong negative impact on the whole system of European security." But apart from that... BTFWWIII

A UN-marked Helicopter being used by Ukraine forces against Donetsk regional militia

And the raw feed via LiveLeak:

Ironically - the UN also wants to know why...

The UN has voiced concerns over the apparent use of UN-marked helicopters by Kiev troops in their military operation against Donetsk regional militia. A video of a white-painted Mil Mi-24 strike helicopter with UN logo has emerged.

When inquired about the United Nations’ stance on the use of peacekeeper-marked military hardware in non-peacekeeper operations, the office for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson said such use would violate UN rules.

It is the responsibility of Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) that provide Contingent Owned Equipment to peacekeeping missions to remove all logos and signage bearing the UN's name once such equipment has been repatriated to the home country or is no longer being used for official UN purposes,” the office told RT.

It added that UN-marked aircraft can be used for missions tasked by the UN and that UN’s Departments of Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support is in contact with the Ukrainian authorities to clarify the issue.

And - as Lavrov explains in the clip below - Russia seriously wants to know why...

As ITAR-TASS reports,

Russia strongly opposes attempts to force Ukraine into NATO, Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov stated in an interview with Bloomberg Television.

Attempts to force Ukraine into NATO may have a strong negative impact on the whole system of European security, and we would be strongly opposing it,” he stressed. The minister added that this issue concerns not only Ukraine and NATO, but Russia as well.

According to Lavrov, Moscow urges to investigate the alleged Kiev’s using of helicopters with UN marks in the military operation in the country’s south-east. “Ukraine is as close to civil war as you can get,” the Russian minister emphasized. “We would like to understand how helicopters with UN logo were used against protesters in the south-east,” the minister said.

“Russia has serious suspicions that mercenaries from the USA are acting in Ukraine’s south-east,” Lavrov pointed out.

Commenting on the news about the start of the ‘round table’ on ways of settling the crisis in Kiev, the Russian minister noted that for the success of the national dialogue, Ukraine needs an equal participation of all the country’s regions in this process.

“I don’t know which the exact list of participants of the widely advertised ‘round table’ in Kiev is. We are convinced that for the success of the national dialogue, an equal participation of all Ukraine’s regions is needed, and not only of the south and east, but of the west as well,” Sergei Lavrov said.

it is hard but i got to admit, lavrov and kerry might not be able after all the bring peace.

Off on a slight tangent:

I love how the language has degenerated so very much.  An attack helicopter, it sure looks like it has guns to me, is part of a "peace keeping" force.  I guess "peace keeping" means "populace suppression"?

I really need to go back to school.  My English skills apparently suck these days.

it shows the junta must be really desperate for working helicopters.

withdrawing those that were sent to africa for UN and not even repainting them.

they must be down to a handful of working ones

probably don't care they shouldn't be using with UN markings

Yes, you'd think this would be obvious, but some assholes down-thread (rodonmeguro and b_thunder) seem to think this is no biggie.

However, it gives the Kiev junta a highly immoral advantage in that separatists are much less likely to fire on a helicopter emblazoned with the logo of a "neutral" organization. It's no different than using helicopters with a Red Cross logo painted on the side.

It also greatly increases the likelihood of actual UN helicopters being fired on in the future.

Cheney took the Iraq national oil co and distributed it to his friends - Putin has enough to do the same or Biden will take it for himself

why wait -  go in before the 25th and create more chaos so there is no vote in the south and east and create illegitimacy no matter who is in charge

otherwise Crimea will be hemmed in on all sides - they will take it from him

It seems the US intends to keep pushing until this turns into a full blown war. The idea of America getting involved or jumping into a war in Ukraine would have been hard to imagine a  few years ago. The potential for this to escalate into a shooting war is real. Allowing events to deteriorate into a major war or possibly into what some see as World War III is becoming a reality.

As insane as it appears this could become the final outcome. The location of this as a military confrontation is right in Putin's backyard and this is a strong advantage for Russia. It is silly to think Putin and Russia will back down. This means poking the bear is not a smart move. It should be noted the military of Ukraine is divided and extremely weak. More about this subject in the article below.

Also listen to this Greg Hunter interview of Paul Crag Roberts.  PCR thinks Ukraine has next to no military.  They used to have nukes until the West talked them out of keeping them.  We are good at doing favors for people.  Remember how we sent our neoKeynesians over to Japan 20 years ago to advise them that they weren't printing enough money/deficit spending?

I just heard that UN helicopters are no longer welcome in the SE quadrant of the space station.

Is there anything more pathetic than seeing a grown man behaving ten times larger than his britches.  I love my country, but Putin is holding most of the cards.  THis isn't like Iraq where the leader - Saddam - had a lot to lose if he lost his sovereignty.  Putin doesn't lose if Ukraine goes into civil war.  For sure through all of the tragic anarchary, the people in the SE will see him as their savior more and more.

I guess that Obama - or the Neocons didn't read the morning papers about China, Russia and Iran getting closer and ditching the dollar.  How is that "Asian Pivot" working out Barry?

The play here all along was to make Europe less Russian energy dependent, or otherwise build a better relationship with Russia.  I am finally getting around to reading about thorium reactors.  Do you suppose that for the tri$$ion we have spent in Iraq/Afghanistan that we could have worked out all of the technical bugs and built a small fleet in Europe over the last 13 years we have been in Afghanistan?  After all, we built the first nuclear bomb in four years, and that was starting from scratch.

Am so glad that the NASA work force is now properly diversified.  Now where are those plans for the apollo rocket motors?  Russia won't sell us theirs anymore.

That would be an allusion to the fact that the Russian are gently hinting that the US has overstayed its welcome in the space station.  No UN choppers in SE  Ukraine - no UN choppers in the SE quadrant of the space station.  Get it?  A bit silly I admit - but a little clever, yes?

Ukraine is turning out to be one of the biggest nails in the US coffin, to date. Their dirty fingerprints are all over this shitstorm and it's blatantly obvious this time. Instead of drumming up war propaganda it appears the MSM are having to work overtime to keep stuff quiet on this one. The US got away with Iraq-istan, Arab Spring and Lybia. In Syria they crossed Putins red line. But this new mess they've created on the edge of Europe and Russia is finally going to bite them in the ass. It's now obvious that the Emperor isn't wearing any clothes. Although the EU are making noises about sanctions etc, they know they've got their backs against the wall on this one. Put yourself in Europe's shoes - do you continue to support a morally/socially & financially bankrupt rogue fascist military state, or do you side with one of your biggest energy suppliers that also happens to be a neighbour and a trading partner? That's right, doesn't take much thought does it? Putin is going to fuck those crazy yanks once and for all and the EU knows it. Russia/China centric global economy. Eurasia is lining up to be the new global super power but the US is trying to put everything in it's way (including the threat of WWIII). Bush Senior was right - there is going to be a new world order, but what he failed to mention is that the good 'ole U.S.A isn't going to be a member. At this point one must tip a hat to Dr. Jim Willie as his sources.

'Americans' are always obvious in their manners. It is how they work. When they started, for example, they declared freedom as a inalienable right to human beings when keeping human beings as slaves. It was obvious to anyone.

'Americanism' is all about submission. 'Americans' usually comes up with an assertion that is obviously false. People adopt the false proposition or reject it. Then it is them against us 'american' style.

Ukraine business changes nothing. For years, it was forecast that 'americans' were heading to central Asia. They are. It was obvious then. It is obvious now.

'Americans' first objective is not war, it is to get a working foothold closer to the terminus.
They are getting that.

'Americans' always work the same, they have been since 1776, July, 4th.

As noted in the link above, the cover story is Ukraine donated the choppers to the UN, who painted them, then when they were given back, Ukraine never bothered repainting them, and the UN is like, totally pissed off about it, and Ukraine can expect a tersely-worded letter in 6-12 weeks.

I contend, fwiw, that the biggest story in all this isn't so much the brazen fuckery of Barry and Zbig and the Neocon-Realists...

It is the level of media control.  To read the Times, or watch CNN or Fox, as most Americans do, you would think this is a battle between good and evil and we, despite the overwhelming evidence since WW2  [how about killing 2 million or so Korean civilians, probably more Vietnamese...all for freedom and the MIC] are the good guys.

The average American is hopeless, but Times readers, say, are supposed to be pretty savvy. But to read the comments, not only are they ignorant of NATO expansion, or the contrast between say Kosovo and Crimea, or the double standards as between how the US treats Russia in Crimea v. Israel in the Occupied Territories - they actually "know" the reverse of history....  for them, Putin is the new Hitler {of course, just as Saddam was, then Ahmadinejad] and it is the Eastern Ukrainians who are the Nazis... not the fucking Nazis who were largely responsible for the IMF/NATO coup in Kiev.

It's not just typical war propaganda, not just repeating the same lie-based jingoism and yellow journalism relative moments after the disastrous Iraq War - it is absolutely lying to an American people, who are absolutely incapable of doubting what comes from their TV or from their government - present company excepted.

I don't understand why Russia doesn't just up and take over Ukraine, the U.N and USA could send everything they had to defend it, and at best it would be a stalemate like Vietnam.

The U.S. Knows it no longer has the power-gap ahead of Russia to hold it back, and it would shamefully back-off while Russia easily gobbles Ukraine up.

We are no longer a lone-super-power, the technology and military capabilities of Russia and China have completely bridged the gap of the soviet era, and the U.S. economy is extremely fragile, and deffinatly would collapse on even the slightest "real war" scenario. (IE: going from attacking mythical men in caves, to actually confronting a mechanized military like Russia).

The U.S. Simply can't afford any form of a real - long - mechanized war, it would plunge the domestic economy into a complete depression.

War is only "good for the economy" if you are not fighting the war, thats why we did so well during the first and 2nd world war, because we pretty much stayed out of it, and the rest of the world went into debt to buy american products (boots, tires, tanks, guns, food etc....) .

But if you are actually the one fighting the war. . .  well . . .  you end up like post WWII Germany.

look how much we spent on the "war on terror ™" , trillions . . .  all to kill one or two dudes hiding in a cave, we didnt even get any land or booty out of it (well except for a few private interests).

There's no need for Russia to take over Ukraine. Crimea was the only part of it vital to Russian security & most Crimeans were Russian citizens or ethnic anyway. If it were to occupy the country, that'd be at a huge expense, both financially and in terms of lives. We could well see a scenario where Ukrainian fascist insurgents are armed by the West, leading to another bloody & draining Afghan or Chechen-style adventure (Brezinski's wet dream). Putin's too clever to fall for that old trick.

No, best thing for Russia is to let the US/EU waste 10s of billions trying to keep this failed state on life support. Of course that cant happen because the EU/US are kinda broke too, so inevitably, within a few years at the most, we will see the return of a govt to Kiev that will desperately need to appeal to Moscow for financial & energy aid. Russia will be happy to provide it (with perhaps a few more strings attached) as it has done so for most of the last decade.

The UN subcontractors traded the chopper to the Serbians for some sex slave action to while away the hours in between watching all of Milosevic's murders and years later, the Uke Nazi's borrowed it from the Serbs because of a birds of a feather sort of thing.

They just keep the UN paint on there because it helps flying the sex slave girls across the Euro borders. If anyone asks what they're doing they tell them they're doing halal meat inspections so the Muslims don't get cheated.

Maybe Lavrov would like to explain the presence of the Wolves' Hundred in Eastern Ukraine in full complement, led by Russian citizens, Ponomaryov and Mozhaev. They are part of the Cossack militias that have been in the service of Russian President Vladimir Putin for almost a decade, and they say they will not go home until they conquer Ukraine or die trying.

Can you believe the audacity of those men?

Of course there is no official connection between those forces and the Kremlin which gives the Kremlin some semblance of plausible deniability, but nevertheless facts are stubborn things. There is no valid reason for Russian citizens such as Mozhaev and Ponomaryov to be occupying buildings in Eastern Ukraine.

And they've vowed to take over Kiev or go home in a body bag. Those men are terrorists, illegally in Ukraine, fomenting insurrection and in open war against the country and people of Ukraine.

I would hire thousands of the best mercenaries from around the world, train them with the Berkut and Ukrainian military and then go take out the trash.

As France is just about to deliver two warships to Russia, and Siemens has just inferred that they can build better ships at cheaper prices, and can prove it if they give them an order for six, but they must be quick, as this is a one time special offer, and delivery of three will take place next Tuesday if they can sign the contract today, and the FUW, (fat unfuckable witch) will ensure that the defense minister will be met personally in Switzerland in the lobby of SNB along with an investment adviser from GS, and a Cayman Island company formation specialist, just to help with technical details you understand,

Of course the delivery of the other three warships might be delayed due to technical reasons, but if necessary Mr FUV (fat unfuckable veryzealous) from Greece can also be on hand to explain the more technical details  regarding these matters in respect of ships and submarines, but that could , possibly, maybe  well likely to incur additional fees that cannot possibly be quantified at this early stage.
