If You Eat, Drink, & Smoke, These Are The Worst Places To Live In The World

Tyler Durden's picture

While the golden beaches and bronzed beauties may attract the world's eaters, drinkers, and smokers to Australia's shores, Melbourne and Sydney are the most expensive place in the world to partake of these life necessities. Close behind is that other paradise... Caracas, Venezuela. But if all you want to do is eat... the socialist safe haven of Venezuela is not where you want to end up as a loaf of bread costs on average over $11. It hasn't always been that way... the cost of eating, drinking, and smoking in Caracas has soared almost 400% in the last 10 years.

The price of eating the most basic food is highest in Caracas, Venezuela...

But if you want to drink and smoke too... Australia ousts the Socialist paradise...

However, Venezuela tops the charts for real inflationary costs for average citizen over the last 10 years...

Socialism por siempre...

I'm always amazed when somebody posts up they're glad that the price of X is going up just because they don't use those products.  It's incredible.  Like you think that will somehow reduce the price of products you DO use because the price of something you DON'T use goes up?  Or because maybe if the government taxes it into oblivion you'll pay less on YOUR taxes??

You're so wrong on so many different levels it boggles the mind.  Do you occasionally have even the slightest inkling that you're being played?

You know what you sound like to me?  A statist (liberal/progressive/socialist, pick a word for it).  Or somebody clearly under their spell.  Somebody who just wants desperately to tell other people how to go about their lives.

What you're not getting is this is the divide-and-conquer game.  You're losing, too, you just don't realize it.  You're rooting for the team that takes all and gives back crumbs.  This affects YOU.  Whether you realize it or not, it does.  YOU are paying for this along with everyone else.

Everything in Australia is bloated and inflated to within an inch of implosion. The Australian funds management system has a huge unfunded hole due to internal crossholdings. Funds operated by the same manager "invest" in each other instead of in actual assets. This circular "investing" inflates the NTA on which units are issued, allows multiple fee overcharging, and fraudulently boosts profits. This blatant fraud is widespread and has been hidden by ASIC.

The libertarian in me likes taxes on "consumption". The difficulty is governments don't know when to quit raising taxes on "sin" stuff...and they kill the goose.

Look at places like NYC. You know there is a thriving black market there. It's been that way forever. I-95 has truckloads of blackmarket cigs going to NYC every day. Whatdo you pointy heads call it? "Price arbitrage"?

Buy cigs in VA or NC for cheap and sell in NYC after a short run up I-95.

I prefer taxes on consumption heaps over income and property taxes.

And it's a myth that consumption taxes are regressive and hard on the "poor". Nonsense!

I'm what is known as "working poor". I buy hamburger, not steak :)

But I do feed my friends Bonnie and Clyde "steak" FF to 3:30. Then, later Clyde feeds the steak to Bonnie at 6:00

these nonsense orange to apples comparisons are continually made as if to demonstrate what it would be like for a person in america to live somewhere else.

the earning power, savings power, taxing obligations, gifting culture, and consumption habbits and relative prices of consumables are a unique patchwork defining each country. just boiling it all down to a 'dollars to dollars' comparison is myopic, dollarcentric and just wrong as a perspective trying to reveal truth.

In particular, the stunningly high cost of a loaf of bread in Caracas is based on the official exchange rate of 6.3 bolivars per dollar.

Substitute the black market (real world) exchange rate of 80 bolivars per dollar, and it's probably the cheapest bread on earth.

So cheap that underpriced Venezuelan food is getting smuggled over the border to Colombia.

All of which goes to show that one can't just mindlessly apply official exchange rates. Garbage in, garbage out.

where we pay people on the dole to have children....

and the govt gives you $10,000 to buy a home..........

it is no wonder people are drowning in boats to get to this dumb ass place where no one born here can afford a basic home......

due to the loop hole that allows chinese students who are studying here to buy a house.....

they simply call a few thousand relatives to chip in.....pretty soon a shit hole is worth $700,000......

Don't forget that we're selling our farms, thus selling our abiity to produce our own food; digging massive holes that destroy the surrounding farmland (unless you've seen the massive mining operations in the Hunter Valley first hand, you've no idea of the scale of the idiocy); privatising our water supplies to whoever bids the most (Hunter Water as an example).

No one I know cares about anything here - just so long as they have a job, and those that don't, don't bother them. My best mate is currently trying to buy another parcel of land so he can increase his portfolio, and even though he's not sure if his job will exist in a years time, he's got no problem spending $650K to build a McMansion on 1000sqm of land.

I think these charts were meant to show US inflation compared to the rest of the world. But since most Americans still think US-centric, they confuse the figures with the cost of living in the countries mentioned in the charts.

Remember those travel guides "Europe on $1 a day"? Well, it would be "Europe on $100 a day" now.

This is also the reason why every year more Europeans than Americans visit NYC: Europeans can afford NYC, Americans cannot.

Even less than that. I live in Sydney Australia and shop daily. From Aldi I purchased a standard loaf of sliced white bread for 99 cents (about 90 US cents). If I spluge on a nice multigrain kibble bread it costs $2.89 and that is about a third heavier than a standard loaf.

I also purchased a bottle of Cabernet Savignion for $2.69 last weekend. Cigarettes are heavily taxed but wouldn't make half of the $40 "average" claimed by this survey for bread/wine/cigs.

Better for us to have a high idiot tax on cancer sticks than to tax the essentials of life (like bread and other staples) as you can choose to not smoke (or you can smoke your own home grown tobacco) but not eating isn't really an option.

These charts don't mean a thing. It all depends on the wages. If you live in Zurich or Geneva then you will also make a very generous wage, and you will not have any problem with daily expenses. This is why quality of life in Zurich is also among the highest in the world.

Compare prices in Swiss supermarkets with Spanish or Greek supermarkets and you will see what I mean. In Spain and Greece you will pay way more for the same items, while the average wage in Switzerland is up to 10x higher...

Of course, if you're a tourist, or expat with a non-swiss-level wage, you're fucked because rents are very high, and so is eating/drinking out. Healthcare is among the highest in the world too.

Funny thing. I have lived in Melbourne for 5 years - with my family. The rent went up only once - by 5%. I have a breadmaker which makes fantastic loaves from ready-made packets of flour from Coles (I add nuts to improve it) - it costs about $6 for 4 loaves. I get wine from http://www.nakedwines.com.au/ which costs around $12 per bottle of fantastic wine. I don't smoke.

I have the impression that this survey does not include people like me.

"While the golden beaches and bronzed beauties may attract the world's eaters, drinkers, and smokers to Australia's shores..."

Not smokers. If you've ever tried to live in Australia as a smoker, you'll find it's probably the most oppressive anti-smoking country on earth. Queensland leads the way - smoking is banned on beaches, and in outdoor areas of restaurants. I found myself drinking a coffee, alone on a street under an umbrella 30 feet from a Starbucks in a tropical thunderstorm, and a girl from the Starbucks came running out through buckets of rain to tell me I had to either put out the cigarette or not stand under their umbrella. Oh and I couldn't sit in their chair either. And that wasn't the Starbucks rule - that was the law in QLD. You can't even smoke in the casinos.

At one point, my girlfriend wanted to eat lunch and I wanted a beer and a smoke, and there was a bar/restaurant that had an outdoor area that was licensed for smokers. You could bring a beer out there but they couldn't serve you out there. So she ordered her food inside and then took it out to sit outside with me. The manager came out and told her she had to bring her food back in, because there couldn't be any eating on the smoking patio. These people are NUTS. And it ain't a freewheeling do-what-you-please society. We're talking about a country where if you squeal your tires, you get a ticket, and if you do it twice they take your car and crush it.

Not to mention a six pack of cheap beer costs something like $12 because of the taxes -- and it's easy to see that Australia is the hardest place on earth to live besides maybe California if you're Joe sixpack smoker.

That's true, it's a beautiful country and worth visiting. I love the nature and the wildlife and the people are great. i just wish they'd let a fella relax and have his smoke and his drink in peace. There's enough space. I lived there for a year and after awhile I felt like I spent half my waking hours just going out of my way for somewhere to smoke and be left alone... I also noted I was spending more on beer than I was on food. Just to do the normal thing on a hot weekend, which is sit under an umbrella somewhere with a cold beer and a book, was always kind of a pain. I found it a lot easier living out in the small towns.

Sat, 05/17/2014 - 11:36 | 4769270 effendi

luckystrike, you want to be free to smoke wherever you want, but you are not the only person on the planet. Your action of smoking around others infringes on the rights of others not to breathe your smoke.

Do you think the waitress in that restaurant  wants to go into that cloud of smoke to clean up the dirty plates of patrons? Those smoking restrictions were introduced because the statistics showed that barmaids and similar workers in smoky workplaces had a much higher passive smoking deathrate than the general population. IIRC the chance of passive smoking caused deaths in such workers was worse than 1 in 10 if they made a career of it.

You also have it wrong about sqealing your tyres twice gets your car crushed. They only crush the cars of the worst serial offenders of those engaging in burnouts and street racing. Moronic hoons who are a menace to everybody.

Cheap beer is under AUD25 for a slab (24 cans). That is about 90 US cents/can.

Lowering the cost of smoking might fix our obesity epidemic. Smoking makes people eat less because it makes food taste fucking horrible. I really don't understand smoking, but I guess it works for some people.

It's not like we produce much wine, or agriculture in Australia, why wouldnt it be expensive.  Although we do have the lowest debt to GDP ratio's in western world at moment, the govt here just announced a brutal cost cutting federal budget with a defecit tax and fuel excise for good measure.  Wow I wonder what a defecit tax would like look in U.S (scared)

While i'm ranting I'll start a civil uprising the next time a politician justifies new/increased tax with the line "it's the equivalant of 1 cup of coffee per day"  WELL FUCK OFF THEN.  I need coffee to survive my day and given we cant afford cigs, alcohol, or my daily bread in the land of Oz anymore it's the only pleasureI have left in an otherwise miserable existance.

p.s you also forgot we have the most expensive electricity in western world and petrol must be right up there at 1.50 per litre.

You can instantly tell who are the Americans are on this post when they rant about how expensive groceries & food are in the US compared to other countries vs local PPP and incomes.  Also in a lot of parts of the US it is quite easy to grown and maintain a small garden which is quietly making a huge comeback unseen like anything since the end of WW2.
