DU seems to be primarily a US/EU thing, because it poisons the area with radioactive dust. Russians stick to tungsten, I think. Lighter and less effective (penetration of an M1A1 @2500 meters, vs 4000m for US vs Russian armor), but you can still grow food when the fighting is done.

A tank is much better armored and gunned and is used to battle other tanks and take control of a battlefield.
APC or armored personnel carriers are intended to mechanize infantry, IE provide some armor protection and speed so they can keep up and stay alive when advancing with tanks.
Some APCs can be neutralized with a .50 rifle - tanks not so much.

I only know because my husband is ex-service and I find what he knows to be interesting. I think a lot of folks are mindlessly scared and hide their heads in the sand because all of it seems overwhelming. I used to be terrified of guns, even holding one that I knew to be empty until I got some experience and then training. I think things "military" are like that for a lot of us, until they ain't.
I'd rather know how to load and unload a gun or a rifle and fire it safely. Best to know which end of an RPG is which. But folks don't and sometimes slowing down to explain like you did (like my husband does) is the best way. Maybe we should "know" but many don't and are still in a culture of fear, ignorance, and incompetence.
