"Conflict Between China And Vietnam Is Imminent" - China Piles Troops, Tanks, Artillery And APCs Near Vietnam Border

Tyler Durden's picture

Earlier today, Putin did his usual "we are pulling our forces away from the Ukraine border" gambit (sure he is... and is replacing them with a massive airforce drill), and as usual the algos fell for it, after European stocks suddenly surged out of nowhere on the now quite generic bounce catalyst (Update: RASMUSSEN: NO SIGN OF RUSSIAN TROOP PULLBACK FROM NEAR UKRAINE - what a surprise), but what is shaping up as a far more dangerous escalation is what China is doing next to its border with Vietnam, where as reported previously protesters destroyed Chinese factories and killed Chinese civilians in retaliation over yet another maritime territorial spat. According to the Epoch Times, "troops, tanks, trucks, artillery, and armored personnel carriers of China’s military were seen heading to the Vietnamese border on May 16 and 17, according to photographs taken by by residents near the border."

Chinese netizens have been posting photographs of the large movement of the People’s Liberation Army, many of them showing Chinese troops in full combat gear heading to the local train station in Chongzuo, along with military vehicles.

One netizen said the Chinese military was taking the train from the Chongzuo station to Pingxiang City, which shares a 60-mile border with Vietnam. The netizen said that the Huu Nghi Border Gate to Vietnam is also now closed.

One of the photos, taken from inside a passenger train, shows the Chinese military preparing artillery for transport on a train track. Others show Chinese troops and military vehicles traveling along dirt roads.

Another photograph shows troops walking under the red-colored entrance to the Longzhou International Building Materials Market, on Provincial Road in the city of Chongzuo.

A reverse image search of each of the photographs using Google indicated that the photographs had appeared on the Internet only recently. Most were indexed by Google on Saturday.

Collectively, the images and eyewitness reports from the ground show what Taiwanese media are calling an “endless stream” of Chinese troops.

Why is China doing this? Simple: "One netizen, with the username Zhiyuan0703, echoed a common sentiment on the Chinese social media site, “Conflict between China and Vietnam is imminent.

And just in case the US gets any ideas to support its one time foe, China has already taken measures:

Fang Fenghui, the Chinese military’s chief of the general staff, spoke with reporters at the Pentagon on May 15, alongside U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey.

Fang defended China’s oil drilling in disputed waters with Vietnam. He also warned the United States on taking sides, saying through a Chinese translator “there is possibility that these issues could affect or disturb the relationship between the two countries and two militaries.”

White House press secretary Jay Carney reiterated the U.S. stance on China’s oil rig, however, during a May 15 press briefing.

He said China’s oil rig, which the Chinese regime has accompanied with “numerous government vessels” is a “provocative act and it raises tensions in the region, and by raising tensions makes it more difficult to resolve claims over disputed territory in a manner that supports peace and stability in the region.”

Carney said the United States takes no position on the territorial claims, but, “We do take a position on the conduct of the claimants who must resolve their disputes peacefully, without intimidation, without coercion, and in accordance with international law.”

Regarding China’s oil rig and the tensions that have formed around it, Carney said, “We consider that act provocative and we consider it one that undermines the goal that we share, which is a peaceful resolution of these disputes and general stability in the region.”

But fear not: the futures are actively monitoring this, and all other global geopolitical conflicts, and are absolutely confident the Fed will fix it should war break out. As usual, we wish algos the best of luck, because as ET summarizes, "China is currently involved in territorial conflicts with nearly all its neighbors." Once again - what can possibly go wrong? Judging by the photos below, nothing at all.

Imperial thieves and the sound of boots in the coming age of material attrition as the fight for the earth's remaining resources hottens up.

Its time the sons of Archimedes invented a new paradigm before the Antarctica totally disappears.

A reminder of a great speech from the past  as the world enters the cold age of the 1930s :

" We have nothing to fear but fear itself" and more...

...rulers of the exchange of mankind's goods have failed through their own stubbornness and their own incompetence, have admitted their failure, and have abdicated. Practices of the unscrupulous money changers stand indicted in the court of public opinion, rejected by the hearts and minds of men.

The money changers have fled from their high seats in the temple of our civilization. We may now restore that temple to the ancient truths. The measure of the restoration lies in the extent to which we apply social values more noble than mere monetary profit.

Recognition of the falsity of material wealth as the standard of success goes hand in hand with the abandonment of the false belief that public office and high political position are to be valued only by the standards of pride of place and personal profit; and there must be an end to a conduct in banking and in business which too often has given to a sacred trust the likeness of callous and selfish wrongdoing.

Restoration calls, however, not for changes in ethics alone. This Nation asks for action, and action now.

...the withered leaves of industrial enterprise lie on every side; farmers find no markets for their produce; the savings of many years in thousands of families are gone.

More important, a host of unemployed citizens face the grim problem of existence, and an equally great number toil with little return. Only a foolish optimist can deny the dark realities of the moment.

Our greatest primary task is to put people to work. This is no unsolvable problem if we face it wisely and courageously.

There are many ways in which it can be helped, but it can never be helped merely by talking about it. We must act and act quickly...

Does this not ring a bell today ?

It might be wishful thinking on my part given I stay in Vietnam, but I would not be surprised to see Putin broker a face saving way out for Vietnam and China during his visit. It would make him superhero, and confirm the toothless tiger status of the US in Asia. Just a thought. And  China gets an even better deal on the gas.

Great insight. Asia buys gas and oil direct from Russia going forward, financed by Chinese Yuan markets.

Yuan and Rouble begin to develop their gold backed definitions of their currencies to stave off inflation. US Fed and ECB need to print moar ... or face rising white, nationalistic backlash. Violence in streets.... Bernanke goes missing.

China has been increasing it's strategic reserves of oil very quickly the last few months.

"The International Energy Agency (IEA) said in its latest monthly report that China imported 6.81m barrels a day in April, an all-time high. This is raising eyebrows since China’s economy has been slowing for months, with slump conditions in the steel industry and a sharp downturn in new construction."

Carney said the United States takes no position on the territorial claims, but, “We do take a position on the conduct of the claimants who must resolve their disputes peacefully, without intimidation, without coercion, and in accordance with international law.”

How unfortunate that the US did not have a think about its position before it removed the democratic government in the Ukraine and replace it with Neo Nazi's. It is hardly in a position now to talk of resolving disputes peacefully, without intimidation, without coercion.

When you lose your credibility the world stops listening.

"A Chinese Bradley? Well I WONDER WHERE THE FUCK THEY GOT THOSE FROM?"

1) maybe they were producing them for US from jumpstreet?

2) maybe they reverse engineered one?

3) maybe they stole the specs from dod?

4) maybe the US manufacturer sold them some?

In any case I feel sure the other side knows how to build the liquid copper devices to penetrate the vehicle. Hell, that info was even on msm.

Don't worry, the Obama administration will handle a possible war between China and Vietnam by. . .having AG Holder indict unnamed members of the Chinese People's Liberation Army with spying.  Talk about insanity.  A war is brewing and the USA can only wave its finger at China for cyber stealing.  The same USA that has NSA officials who are now subject to criminal charges from foreign countries for illegal spying, thanks to the precedent this indictment sets and Snowden's NSA revelations.  AG Holder should be indicting the short sellers of U.S. aviation stocks in the weeks before 9/11, making tens of millions of dollars according to Jim Rickards, but Holder can't do that.  Mustn't upset the short sellers who are now Obama's organ grinders.

(CN) - The United States today will unseal a criminal indictment accusing Chinese officials of spying on U.S. companies and stealing trade secrets, wire services are reporting. Attorney General Eric Holder is expected to announce the charges at 10 a.m. Eastern time.
It's believed to be the first criminal complaint to be filed against members of the Chinese government, or people with close ties to it. China has long been suspected of leading cyberspying operations against U.S. companies and the government.
The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal reported that several defendants are members of China's People's Liberation Army.
The indictment is sure to complicate diplomatic relations between the two countries. China has indignantly, but not convincingly, denied past accusations of cyberspying.
Courthouse News will update this report when the lawsuit is unsealed.

"A war is brewing and the USA can..." why would you have USA respond in any way to a war ocean away?

Obama should sit on his ass, dismantle all foreign military bases, cut military budget by 2/3, take care of fascist/crony capitalist system that is oppressing USA citizens, shrink and balance budgets and just stay away from the rest of the world. Trade with everybody, invade or make biding alliances with nobody. Though, obviously that would work for USA citizens, not so much for him and his friends.

China has lots of new hardware.  Viet Nam will be an ideal place to try it out, plus gain combat experience.  Why?

1. Unlike with Taiwan, the US Navy can't stop China in Viet Nam.

2. No one in the US wants anything to do with miliary-related anything in Viet Nam.

3. The current generation of military-age Viet are nothing like the those from the era 1964-1975.

China has not only lots of new hardware, but lots of people too. Vietnam also has too many people given its small size.

So on the bright side, a war would help relieve their overpopulation problems a little bit.

As for Taiwan, no, the US Navy can't stop China there either. But then, neither Taiwan nor China want a war. They might even join forces to expel the Vietnamese and the Filipinos from the South China Sea territories.

The IFV pictured is in no way a copy of a Bradley, that's nonsense.  Neither is it a "copy of a BMP."

It's a Type 89 IFV built by Norinco, which traces it's design lineage back to the Type 63 that entered service in the 1960's.  It's an improved design based on experience gained through the Type 85 (export) IFV.

I mentioned them before and I'll mention them again Uighurs.

A little primer from the US point of view.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/19/opinion/pushing-the-uighurs-too-far.html

All Russian gas coming into China from the West/Northwest has to go through their territory.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xinjiang

Don't think they won't split the PLA in half forced to defend 2 fronts at once, then agitate the citizens in the middle. The Chinese as secretive as they are with that region probably won't even allow the Russians into it to help out with keeping the pipelines secure from 'seperatists'.

Fuck em anyways Chinese are a bunch of 5 faced bastards to begin with. The Chinese have always had a weakness for vice and even if they can't subdue them this way they will just ply them with white women and gambling afterwards and steal back control. One way or the other.

I'm sure that Victoria Nuland is there, whipping up the Uighurs into a frenzy...or working through muslim proxies.

China has new hardware, to be certain.  And the Sino-Vietnamese War was over a generation ago.  It could go either way.  I'm sure China views Vietnam as a vassal state, historically "belonging" to China.  The argument that really pisses of Chinese ultra-nationalists uses the same logic.  Doesn't China historically belong to the US, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Russia, Japan and Austria/Hungary since the Boxers were wiped out?

What is interesting, is that the Vietnamese population is very young, kind of ripe for a nationalist movement.  It'd probably be a poor decision on China's part to stir the pot too much.  The Sino-Vietnamese war was won by home-guard units, not even regular Vietnamese army units.  And the Chinese losses were staggering when viewed in this light.  I'm sure this is being discussed ad-nauseum in Vietnam right now.

There is a lot of bad blood between the various factions in that region that goes back many generations that still persist today.

For example the Chinese have always wanted a reunified North and South Korea. Granted they wanted a Communist one initially but these days don't care about that anymore and are actually on the same page as South Korea with unifying the 2 now. It is the US through Japan (who also don't want a unified Korea period) that are the impediments to that one now.

Japan has a long history of bad blood with China and in turn Korea. The empire plays these long standing feuds to their advantage pitting the groups against each other to suit their needs. It don't take much to reignite these feuds when dealing with prideful people. It is a weakness to be exploited and they do.

Dewey, that's NOT the US point of view, or opinion. That's US propaganda.

The author is right only about one thing - there's been racial discord between the Hans and the Uighurs.

I've traveled to China's West (Xingjiang) a while back. The problem with Chinese policy there has not been one of "pushing too far", rather, it's being absurdly lenient and forgiving, resulting in sheer lack of deterrent for  Uighur criminals and in fact, encouragement of violence in daily life. The high crime rate among Uighurs was almost solely due to lack of proper law enforcement, proper sentences for crimes, and inadequate prevention of foreign subversive operations (such as ones conducted by the US / CIA). The Chinese government naively believed that favorable treatment of the Uighurs (allowing them to give birth to 4-5 kids while the rest of the country could only have 1; letting Urghur rapists, thieves, armed robbers, and murderers go unpunished) would win their hearts and mind. The government is now paying for its naivete.

Such policy only served to embolden the Uighurs to be lawless citizens. (US is not the only country with incompetent leaders; China has them too)

As a group, the Uighurs have never been known to be keen on education or development of mental faculty or job skills despite government subsidies for free education. Ignorant, uneducated people are prone to subversive propaganda (this should be easy, considering many schooled Americans can't figure out how their government is screwing them. (thanks to FOX, CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, NY Times, and the mind-numbing entertainment industry.)

While the Uighurs under self-rule had not been subjected to barbaric slavery (unlike the Tibetans under the Dalai Lamas), their livelihood prior to economic development by the Hans had been one of mere subsistence, like that in Afghanistan. Plenty of Koran chanting inside the mosques and idle smoking outside of the mosques. Not much else. All their modern conveniences (hospitals, schools, roads, cars, cell phones, TVs, computers etc) have been the result of economic development by the Hans.

China is clearly waking up to match it's foreign policy to it's economic status. We do expect China's economy to be the largest in the world sometime this year. Of course some can argue the measurement tools, but we all know China is surpassing America's overall economy. US GDP is, after all, mostly made up of welfare payments, health care and military spending. The giant container ships arrive at American ports every day carrying the American dream inside. I mean the consumer dream, much of what the middle class and poor buy comes right off of those ships. The rich can afford the luxury goods of Europe and up scale imports from Asia.

The US relationship with China is far different than our relationship with Russia. China is our workshop, Russia is not. China provides so many things to America, not the least of which is a supply of paying students for US universities. And capital to boost Manhattan Real Estate. China holds huge US debt paper. China provides US corporations with the cheap labor and lower paid skilled labor that fuels corporate profits at record levels. Russia and the USA can part ways and enter a new cold war without much disruption. China and the USA can NOT part ways without chaos in the markets, all markets, stock and bond, commodities and gold. It is all up for grabs if China and the USA start the sanctions talk.

And it is funny, when the USA is now proven to hack every computer on earth, and every phone, email and other communications tool. China is doing what the USA is proven to do, and here we get all this shock and moralizing about bad chinamen hacking computers, spying on innocent America.

Really is like America complaining Russia has destablizied Ukraine, when we all know what the USA has done there. The innocent school yard bully is always the biggest complainer when his victims turn on him.

Will the Eurasian century bring more peace to the region than the thirty years of American domination and past mayhem.

Many of China's competent military leaders were persecuted (sometimes to death) during the Cultural Revolution, an unprecedented political madness unleashed by Mao.

One of them, Mr. Deng Xiao Ping (who later became China's top leader) had commented before the war in 1979 that many incompetent military cadets could only learn by "running into a wall", according to a memoir.

China can afford to lose half a million without blinking. Vietnam can't. In 1979, the casualty ratio was about China 1 vs Vietnam 2. If they fight again, I doubt that Vietnam can make it that close, even with US help.

Human beans are pack animals designed to follow orders of their leader. Armies are also pretty good at beating down the nails that stick out. Our Army is pretty weaksause on discipline, but they're volunteers these days. Other armies shoot a few in front of the group, and make it plain following orders is a GOOD thing. Also, troops are pretty well propagandized to think what they're doing is right and necessary.

Viet Nam has gone downhill since the last time they fought the Chinese.

The US vs Viet Nam conflict may be more recent and of relatively short duration compared to the long standing 400 years of brutal occupation impposed on Cochin and north and south Viet Nam by thier Chinese  neighbors.  It's pretty well established that Ho Chi Minh first appropreached the US  State Deptment as a representative of the worlds leading anti-colonial power in their desire to break free from both the French and Chinese grip on their economy.  Truman's refusal to lend such assistance drove the Vietmanese natiomnalists firmly into the hands of the Chi-Coms.  Only to temporarily postpone the reemergence of the old anamosity of the smaller nations and peoples against their larger and more arrogant neighbors.
