Chilean Activist Burns $500 Million Student Loan Docs In Protest Against Debt Serfdom

This story struck a particular chord with me considering my mother left Chile for the United States back in the early 70′s after Salvador Allende was elected President. She was able to instinctively see the writing on the wall, and got out ahead of the political chaos, military coup and dictatorship that followed.
Beyond my own person connection, I find this to be a very important story in that it further highlights the fact that the current war/civil unrest cycle is an interconnected global phenomenon. Since the parasitic Central Bank driven financial system is more or less entrenched in every country on earth, every country on earth is experiencing increased concentrations of wealth into the pockets of a handful of oligarchs. Meanwhile, those nations which heretofore had a middle class are finding that this entire socio-economic class is disappearing into the dustbin of history via a variety of methods, not the least of which is criminal quantities of student loans. These loans are pushing an entire generation into inescapable serfdom, while many university administrators are enriching themselves at their expense.
So it appears student loan based debt serfdom is also a major issue in Chile, and one activist, known as “Papas Fritas,” decided to take matters into his own hands. During a takeover at Universidad del Mar, he was able to get his hands on $500 million of student debt, which he subsequently torched.

An activist in Chile has burnt documents representing $500 million (£300 million) worth of student debt during a protest at Universidad del Mar.
Francisco Tapia, who is also known as “Papas Fritas”, claimed that he had “freed” the students by setting fire to the debt papers or “pagarés”
In the five-minute video the artist and activist, translated by the Chilean news site Santiago Times, he passionately says: “You don’t have to pay another peso [of your student loan debt]. We have to lose our fear, our fear of being thought of as criminals because we’re poor. I am just like you, living a s**tty life, and I live it day by day — this is my act of love for you.”
While his act of defiance will have brought smile to those now debt-free students, it will be difficult for the university to recoup the losses and the higher institution may have to individually sue students to get the get the debt repaid.
There have been protests in Chile since 2011 calling for reform of the university system and for free high-quality education. It was hoped the newly-elected president, Michelle Bachelet, would be bring reform, after a campaign promising drastic change to the education system.
However, two months on, tens of thousands of students have taken again to the street calling again for changes promised.
Last week there were clashes on the street of the Chilean capital, Santiago, as demonstrations turned violent.
Now here’s the video. It has over 70,000 views. Unfortunately, there are no english subtitles, but if you understand even a little Spanish you’ll get the point.
And his passion needs no translation.
The global masses are getting fed up with the bullshit system we are forced to live under, and rightly so. The key is that we must ensure that what comes next is better and not just another reactionary centralized system.
We must evolve and move toward a world characterized by decentralization, freedom and a creative spirit.

Call me a crazy conspiracy theorist, but I think they have 1's and 0's for that. In fact, they'll probably sue a bunch of people who didn't have student loans, and then cite the burning as a basis for not having to produce the original documentation.

How is one fewer educational institution a win-win? I mean, apart from the minority of students that are not obliged to pay for the resources they consumed while learning... while the remainder of their peers are?
Who shoulders the cost for this act? Much as I dislike how education is 'organised' in the West (I have no idea how they do things in Chile) I don't see this leading to anything other than i) higher costs for students going forward, or ii) even more socialised (read: State-directed) education.

This is the problem. What he has done is a one-off. He's attacking the trees and ignoring the forest. What is needed is enough people who are sufficiently smart and well-educated not to take on the debt in the first place. Although I don't know the system in Chile, I assume these people had all signed these documents to take on this debt. Going back retroactively and burning the documents ignores the root of the problem that they were signed in the first place. That is the fertile ground for a genuine evolution of human thought: stop accepting money in exchange for servitude, no matter how pretty the packaging offered.
Because this so-called "educational insititution" is a government-supported indoctrination center. The entire academic system of "higher education" is a giant misnomer and misallocation of resources.

Not from what we've seen in the DC US, especially Florida. They have even 'foreclosed" and taken homes that had NO mortgage much less one with the suing bank.

When students enter the university, there, waiting for them at the door is the banker-university partnership where the banker sucks the student into debt slavery and the university raises the tuition accordingly -- always a little bit farther than the student can reach.

I can assure you that very many of the students (and recent graduates) (and older graduates) are beyond the dissent phase. It is becoming culturally acceptable in some notable communities to attend college with the intention of defaulting on their loans.
Digital is not going to work, either. If you have a clue about where this world is heading, then you are already learning very well how to live basically and productively. You have unbanked, you have moved, you have established a community that shares your views. Routine vs. non-routine. Anyone with half a brain will be looking at non-routine work coming out of college (even if it is on a lower wage) these days. Anything routine is subject to automation.

There is no freedom without economic freedom, and I am forced to use the "currency of the realm" by coersion at threat of extortion (fines), kidnapping ("going" to jail), and murder (justified refusal to "go" to jail). Any contract made in a phony currency is by it's nature a phony contract.

Anyone notice that for all the noise the progressives make about wealth disparities, the only way they have of narrowing them is by lowering the overall income of society. Did Greenspan lie? Bernanke? Were people not led to believe things from their leaders which encouraged them to make financial decisions fatal to their selves and families? To use your argument, it would then be fair for the government to institute a wealth tax to bring debt down to a safer gdp ratio, because if we had been more responsible, we would have never voted for or allowed the degree of debt accumulation to happen. Are you willing to pay that debt?

Yes, bash the sheep for their stupidity given that the mask of illusion has been lifted over the past decade. It is so obvious to so many now, where in the past the odious control of information made even muttering the possibility of an alternative reality a guaranteed trip to the nuthouse. A contract has TWO parties, not one. If the contract is violated, it is null and void. THAT is the agreement. There is no loss of integrity when you discover you were lied to from the beginning. Further, a loan is a promise to pay, with the risk being, it may not be paid back. Which is why they charge interest. If for some reason it cannot be paid and you took no collateral, how is that their fault?
People use technicalities of the law all the time. If you eliminate law, then the technicalities cease to exist and you are left with a dependence on integrity. I would prefer this type of system. However, we do not abide in this kind of land.

However, the publlic has never been told that legally and morallly the lender must offer legal consideration in exchange for the loan. In fact, the public has ben purposely misled into thinking that consideration is in fact backing their loan (that the bank has deposits to back up the loan). They don't. Consideration would occur if loans came AFTER deposits, not BEFORE, and such deposits would be tangible (a stable form of stored value). Writing a loan based on the deposit of another's promissory note is not consideration. It is by definition parasitic usury and fraud. Which means they have been conned.
If these people took out loans, and defaulted, and as a result someone else lost real, stored savings, I would be with you on this point. But that is not the case.

As for "quit borrowing," great, but that is just a change in behavior, a good thing, not an assault against them and their house of cards like "quit paying” is. Also when one "quits paying" they can put the retained wealth into preparing for what is coming anyways.

The initial storm of confusion and dismay will last long enough for the ceremony and diploma. After which they may want a reconfirmed debt document. I don't recommend agreeing to it.

Since the whole idea of "learn" is to be able to "produce"... why does such a huge gap exist between "borrow tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to learn"... and... "get paid tens of or hunderds of thousands of dollars to produce"?

For anyone not familiar with this aspect of past human history, let me just inform you that the term "apprentice" was not coined for "Jedi Knights" in Star Wars.
Not at all. In fact, it was quite common for young humans (starting as young as age 6, but sometimes as old as mid-20s) to become an apprentice. What is the nature and purpose of apprenticeship? Twofold. Like Obiwan and others in StarWars, the young apprentice helps his teacher achieve whatever the teacher does. Usually the apprentice helps his teacher produce something tangible... like woodworking (create furniture), like metalworking (cast, machine, assemble metal parts), almost anything. For example, an apprentice can often help a pilot who flies airplanes that only requires one pilot. The apprentice doesn't do anything critical at first, and the pilot always checks that his orders have been followed. As time passes, the apprentice becomes a competent woodworker, metalworker, pilot, mathematician, hardware developer, software developer, or any of thousands of other skills.
At the very beginning, the apprentice might not be paid at all. Sometimes the teacher will recognize the apprentice has no natural talent or inclination for the skills in question, and suggest other endeavors that the apprentice does seem to suit. Otherwise, as the apprentice becomes able to perform more and more productive work, the teacher begins to pay the apprentice more and more (in goods that he can trade, or in money).
Why does the world not work this way today?

The full answer is complex, but the basic answer is... because the predators-that-be have set up the current system, brainwashed the entire planet to accept their corrupt system, and not take advantage of NATURAL learning processes that benefit apprentices as well as teachers and producers.
I'm completely serious.
Since before I finished high school, I've been self-employed scientist, engineer, inventor, product developer. I've been doing this for decades now. And I'd love to find apprentices who are seriously interested in learning hardware (electronics) design, software development, or even some of the breakthrough technologies I'm working on.
But... no cigar. Not even any websites to connect potential apprentices with producers.
Why is this? Why do kids have to spend tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars... and go without any income for many, many years... to learn skills? When there are people out there producing real goods, making real advances, who would be happy to help apprentices learn and gain skills (and a LOT faster and more practically than any school)?
The answer is... the predators-that-be have done such an effective job of brainwashing entire generations of human beings, that almost ZERO of them can see other ways of living that would be VASTLY easier and better for them (and earn them at least a little money, as opposed to getting deep into debt).
Of course, one completely obvious way this is implemented by the predators-that-be is what are called "minimum wage laws".
Think about it. Assume I could afford to collaborate with a young apprentice who wanted to learn, say, software development (or a whole range of related skills necessary to create smarter than human robots). The LAW would prohibit me and the apprentice from this collaboration... unless I did not pay him a cent.
Think about it. This apprentice could learn from me while he helped me... as long as I paid him NOTHING. Or, this apprentice could learn from me while he help me... if he paid me money for "education".
But I could NOT pay him small amounts of money, and gradually raise those amounts as he became more competent, productive and helpful. That is against the law.
I won't add the endless number of other silly aspects of modern life, because they'd be off topic. Suffice to say, humans go through so many utterly stupid and pointless motions. Some eventually figure out they're being scammed and ripped-off... and complain. An extremely tiny minority take actions like this guy in this video when they finally understand how egregiously corrupt the system is (but still have no freaking idea how completely they comply with the corrupt system in endless other ways).

BTW, maybe one of you out there should attempt to create some kind of apprentice-producer matching site. This would take a bit of time and effort to figure out how to formulate the relationships so they are mutually advantageous and contain no ways for either side to significantly cheat the other.
But the most obvious point is this. With the information that exists on the internet, and with libraries in many populated parts of the planet, and with some kind of creative "book lending" system that should be reasonably easy to establish (local collections of more technical books that apprentices could borrow or read on-site)... plus availability of a wide variety of apprentice-producer services... WHO NEEDS COLLEGE?

And for any of you young folks out there who have a passion to understand some field, or a passion to become expert in some field... look for individuals or tiny collaborations in your field or endeavor, and go offer your services... for free at first if you must. Once you show you can be helpful, even if only in non-expert ways, you will probably be accepted as part of the "team" or "endeavor", and almost certainly you can find someone you can learn-from AS you help them. At which point, you're on your way.
Don't let "convention" (or minimum wage laws) stand in your way.
I read an article recently about an astute, young Swedish guy who was tired of being unemployed, so he got an apprenticeship at a local shop. Of course the government put an end to it really fast and fined the store.
wwoof--world wide opportunities on organic farms. This is matching a demand of unpaid labor (interns) to study under experienced organic farmers. It's a start...in exchange for labor, interns learn to farm organically, are fed, and often given living arrangements. After a summer or a couple years, they are ready to start CSA's or begin their own farm.
This type of model, as the poster above described about apprentices, really works. It takes a willing LEARNER and matches with an experienced TEACHER. Way better than college, in my opinion.

"Invented Languages: Klingon and Beyond" (The University of Texas)
"The textual appeal of Tupac Shakur" (University of Washington)

I am self educated and agree with your post. For me, it was a desire and need that motivated me to learn.
Tie it in with practical experience and a foundation is built which is much more useful than what I see the education system producing.

The blacksmith specializing in arms and armor had the longest apprenticeships because it was a highly lucrative trade and the guild system limited the number of people who could engage in it.

I have nothing against learning from "free university" websites. Each individual needs to investigate all possibilities, and do what works.
But you are quite wrong to claim that individuals cannot find or contact other individuals with extraordinary knowledge and expertise who are often working on revolutionary, breakthrough science, engineering or technology. Just to briefly mention one example, because it relates to your comment, I know one scientist who was offered huge money to do design new CPUs for AMD several years ago (not quite Intel, but... close enough), and he is now working on a breakthrough project that would benefit from a few dedicated and talented apprentices.
What an individual can find depends on the field. Furthermore, an individual trying to learn this way needs to have at least a little bit of insight, and accept some risk. Probably the best opportunities for learning and career are NOT people currently recognized as being "top in their field". Believe me, getting more publicity is NOT the same as being the most creative, most capable or most intelligent.
What I'm saying is... working with the top people in a field is NOT the same as working with the most recognized or popular.
Of course, they will need to find a private project. Today, so much is dominated by government and large corporations (who have access to unlimited fiat funds), smaller endeavors are less common than at previous times in history. So anyone who wants to be an apprentice needs to search further and wider, and perhaps even work for two or three projects before they find one that suits them. But they can be found. And when you consider the waste of the alternative (in time, money, and brainwashing), such overhead is worth it to anyone who is serious about their life and about intellectual advancement.

It's worth observing that virtually every country has its socio-economic elite who control the majority of the country's wealth. They are its Oligarchs. What's remarkable about these people/families, is that those who have a balanced world-view will not allow excessive wealth to be concentrated in too few hands or for too long.
In most Germanic and Nordic countries of Central and Northern Europe, the richest families comprise a kind of a national Oligarchs also. They however, have a vision and worldview that seeks to rise as many of their countrymen to a higher standard of living -- while competing with the rest of the world. The wealth gap is not as extreme as in poorer countries, because they seek (self-serving) SOCIAL STABILITY over maximum short-term profits, and they realize that to achieve such social stability, it is imperative that its people have a decent standard of living that includes decent and affordable education and health care -- rather than wasting money on warfare and empire-building.
In poor countries it is typical that the oligarchs are not visionaries and nation builders, but corrupt, self-indulgent sociopaths, who care not about the rest of society.

All loans should be collateralized, amortized and, most important, nonrecourse, the latter term meaning that if you decide for any reason you don't to pay the balance of the loan then you just tell your creditor to take the collateral. Nonrecourse loans would not mean no loans - just fewer loans and with higher amount of collateral. Of course, there is no way to collateralize education expenses so there would be no more student loans unless the student or his parents were willing to put up other assets as collateral. Fewer loans would mean less expensive tuition and textbook prices.
What nonrecourse loans would really mean is that all loans would come out of savings rather future earnings that might not occur or could make the borrower a debt slave.
