Tyler Durden's picture

In the first case of its kind, US Attorney General Eric Holder has broght charges against five Chinese military officals on charges of economic espionage and other offenses related to computer hacking of US nuclear power, metals, and power industries:

  • *FIVE CHINESE MILITARY OFFICERS CHARGED BY U.S. WITH ESPIONAGE
  • *JUSTICE DEPARTMENT SAYS CHINA HACKERS PENETRATE U.S. COMPANIES
  • *DOJ SAYS ESPIONAGE TARGETED WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC, U.S. STEEL, ALCOA, SOLARWORLD

Holder added that the "range of trade secrets and other senstivive business information stolen in this case is significant and demands an aggressive response."

As BBC reports:

The US has charged Chinese officials with hacking private-sector companies, in a first of its kind cyber-espionage case.

Attorney General Eric Holder will announce charges against five Chinese hackers, saying they broke into US companies to gain trade secrets.

The US and China have previously sparred over cyber attacks, with the US accusing China of being behind attacks on companies and US military targets.

In detail:

“This is a case alleging economic espionage by members of the Chinese military and represents the first ever charges against a state actor for this type of hacking,” U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement.

“The range of trade secrets and other sensitive business information stolen in this case is significant and demands an aggressive response. Success in the global marketplace should be based solely on a company’s ability to innovate and compete, not on a sponsor government’s ability to spy and steal business secrets.”

The Justice Department said the U.S. victims included:

  • Westinghouse Electric Co.;
  • U.S. subsidiaries of SolarWorld AG;
  • United States Steel Corp.;
  • Allegheny Technologies Inc.;
  • the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial Services Workers International Union; and
  • Alcoa Inc.

Additionally, Preet Bharara noted an additional push to be discussed later

Yeah, and what is our Atty General doing prosecuting foreign military leaders?  What's he going to do?  Go over to China and arrest them?

This is just bizarre.  I can barely wrap my mind around the incomprehensible stupidity of this.  More Theatre of The Absurd from this marvelous administration.

I'm guessing China will now impose sactions on US, isntead of the other way around.

In May 2010, General Keith Alexander outlined his views in a report for the United States House Committee on Armed Services subcommittee:

"My own view is that the only way to counteract both criminal and espionage activity online is to be proactive. If the U.S. is taking a formal approach to this, then that has to be a good thing. The Chinese are viewed as the source of a great many attacks on western infrastructure and just recently, the U.S. electrical grid. If that is determined to be an organized attack, I would want to go and take down the source of those attacks. The only problem is that the Internet, by its very nature, has no borders and if the U.S. takes on the mantle of the world's police; that might not go down so well."

In response to concerns about the military's right to respond to cyber attacks, GEN Alexander stated:

"The U.S. must fire back against cyber attacks swiftly and strongly and should act to counter or disable a threat even when the identity of the attacker is unknown" prior to his confirmation hearings before the United States Congress. This came in response to incidents such as a 2008 operation to take down a government run extremist honeypot in Saudi Arabia. "Elite U.S. military computer specialists, over the objections of the CIA, mounted a cyberattack that dismantled the online forum"

So USCYBERCOM did not prempt the Chinese attacks? Sounds familiar to other USSA failures!

Oh so curious.

NoDebt - Remember back from the mid nineties campaign contributions fr the Chinese to Bill Clinton and access to Los Alamos nuclear tech (its was called spying but was a scandal), allowing missle tech and supercomputers to be sold to China by private companies? Trasnferring America's manufactuing and gold wasn't the only thing to build China up as the next reserve currency. But now trade is to be rebalanced.

The Chinese are ponging back to America and doing there new early role as global cop.

They like the US before it, will crush any country getting in the way of global energy supply. At this point I doubt the US will permit any more tech transfer, America's rulers may be greedy sociopaths but they are not stupid.

Does it make sense now?

Wait for the Central Bank of CHina to file a complaint to the Justice Authorities in China:

1. Complaint: US is counterfeiting money

2. US shall repay all USD of China in Gold at the 1971 parity of 35 USD per ounce.

That shall be fun to watch.

China has its workers sweat and toil to manufacture goods and the US pays with confettis. China has to take their payments somewhere. The first step is to get some USD sterilization and preventing dollars to enter by making the population amass Gold and Silver instead of Yuan deposits backed by a depreciating dollar (Theft on Chinese worker is blocked that way). The second step is to get what is due by any mean possible. The third step is to get rid of dollars by lending dollars on a 1 to 1 basis (no leverage) so that Companies can buy foreign assets.

When the US pays its trade deficit in Gold, US will have all the legitimacy to prosecute industrial theft. For now it is theft (debased USD) for theft (industrial espionnage).

The US only collects 3.2 billion pieces of intelligence a day illegally from this world.  None of those could possible be coming from Chinese companies.  The Nobel Prize Winner says so.

The National Security Agency has sought to create back doors into the networks of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies in an effort to learn whether the company was spying on behalf of Beijing, according to a leaked document.

The agency also apparently hoped to take advantage of the presence of Huawei equipment in the networks of other countries of interest, such as Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kenya and Cuba, according to the document leaked by former agency contractor Edward Snowden.

Welcome to the new economy we Chinese steal from you, then use that technology to sell shit back.

A short story from a family member.   he was present at a trade show where a guy representing a company that made valves had his products on the table so people could examine his products.   A couple Chinese 'business men' came by and examined the shit to the point of taking tons of photographs of everything.  My relative then spoke with the rep and said "you know they are stealing your stuff right?!".  The rep said, "Of course because they did the same damn thing last year  and sold the same products at lower cost.".  My relative said, "So you are letting them do it again?".  Rep, "No I brought in every failed valve design modification we made last year so they would steal and replicate garbage."

Don't worry, the Obama administration is dealing with a possible war between China and Vietnam by. . .having AG Holder indict members of the Chinese People's Liberation Army with spying. Talk about insanity.  A war is brewing and the USA can only wave its finger at China for cyber stealing.  The same USA that has NSA officials who are now subject to criminal charges from foreign countries for illegal spying, thanks to the precedent this indictment sets and Snowden's NSA revelations.  AG Holder should be indicting the short sellers of U.S. aviation stocks in the weeks before 9/11, making tens of millions of dollars according to Jim Rickards, but Holder can't do that.  Mustn't upset those short sellers who are now Obama's organ grinders.

So what? What is Holder going to do? Embargo them? The US is over a barrel here as they can't cut the cord from China and its cheap slave labor products. We exported inflation and that's where we are folks

This sounds like a propaganda action.  The US has two black eyes and swolen nuts from what happened after Snowden leaked, and now we're trying to make the other guy look bad.  If it is propaganda, it will fail, even if convictions happen and are real.

The DOJ/NSA/CIA/FBI/DHS can make any shit story up they want. How do we know if they are lieing or not?  I just assume everything they publicly announce these days as a grand lie to save their sorry asses.   This same Chinese hacker (or Russian, Iranian) front will be used for whatever purpose they desire.  One day our 401k's and IRAs will all be stolen by "Chinese hackers".

Chinese hackers?! This is scary! Can they hack my Facebook account, too?  What about my Internet connected TV?! Could they block my Dancing With the Stars?

We need to stop these guys before this gets serious.  The government should like, fix the internet or something.  Or like, make sure everything on the Internet is safe...Whatever they need to do, they should do..

Sure it has nothing to do with that Russian gas deal.

Paging Mr Snowden....

Chinese think they are going to get away with a gold backed Yuan. The empire will just drop a shitload of contracts onto the market and crush the price and in turn their economy just like the Brits did to them using India as a proxy over silver after the Chinese hoovered up all the British silver for tea then after hooking them on a new idoltry aka Opium they still wouldn't give up the silver so the British crushed the price of silver as revenge.

The Chinese have built the physical bullion infrastructure and will have a SWIFT equivalent for trade settlement in currencies other than the $ sometime this year. At that point they can disengage the price of physical gold from the COMEX / London Gold Fix pricing. The Western cabal can sell naked short all they want at that time but it will have no effect on PHYSICAL gold traded in Shanghai / HK / etc.

I'll bet even the Langley heroin dealers in Afganistan will be looking to trade $ at that point.

This is a joke right?

There are serving PLA officers running the daily operations of publicly traded companies in silicon valley - for decades.

You think Holder during the Reno regime ever had Intel on Chinese activities during the Clinton task force on Chinese money and espionage? Did things improve after the LA division China squad got their collective asses handed to them?

The Chinese are a much older civilization and are laughing at the addled children running the USA into the ground.  Funnier still that US elites consider the China model the best for business and state.

America.  You broke my heart.

Oh yes there is that whole NSA thing isn't there.

While my understanding of those in power in China is that they are corrupt and self-serving, I think they have a vast universe to cross before they reach the level of the US justice department. The US justice department is apparently in the business of protecting criminals and persecuting the innocent. ... It is just political business as usual they claim.

Maybe it should not be business as usual... I am thinking.
