Deadliest Ukraine Fighting In Weeks Caught On Tape

Tyler Durden's picture

At least 13 Ukrainian soldiers (and reportedly at least 20 pro-Russian supporters) were killed today as WSJ reports fighting flared across breakaway regions in the east just days before a presidential election the rebels have vowed to block. Markets have forgotten that the US-Europe-Russia-China-Ukraine tensions continue and the major event risk this weekend but the last 24 hours have seen several attacks with the highest number of casualties since the conflict began 2 months ago. Separatists near Luhansk blew up a bridge over the Siverskiy Donets river near Novodruzhesk in several hours of fighting, Interfax reported, citing witnesses. The worst fighting appeared to take place near Volnovakha, on the road from the regional capital, Donetsk, to Mariupol, where there hadn't been heavy separatist fighting before.. and the dismal episode was caught on tape.

As EuroNews reports,

At least eleven Ukrainian troops were killed and about 30 others were wounded on Thursday when pro-Russian insurgents attacked a military checkpoint, the deadliest raid in weeks of fighting in eastern Ukraine.

Journalists saw 11 bodies scattered around the checkpoint on the edge of the village of Blahodatne, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of the city of Donetsk.

Witnesses said that more than 30 Ukrainian troops were wounded when the insurgents attacked the checkpoint, and some of them were in grave condition.

The attack came three days before the country's presidential vote.

Three charred Ukrainian armored infantry vehicles, their turrets blown away by powerful explosions, and several burned trucks stood at the site of the combat area. A military helicopter landed on the site, carrying officials who inspected the scene.

The Ukrainian Defence Ministry confirmed the attack, but wouldn't comment on casualties. There was no report of casualties on the insurgent side.

The Volnovakha hospital was closed to the media, as Ukrainian soldiers rushed in and out, and guarded the entrances.

In the town of Horlivka, a rebel commander claimed responsibility for the raid and produced an array of weapons they said they had seized.

Scores have been killed in fighting between pro-Russian insurgents, who have seized government buildings and engaged in clashes with government troops in eastern Ukraine.

Thursday's carnage cast a shadow over Ukraine's presidential vote on Sunday, which insurgents in the east have pledged to derail.

The Responses... (via WSJ)

Ukraine

"Under heavy fire from mortars, grenade-launchers and heavy machine-guns, our boys died for Ukraine," Mr. Turchynov told a group of religious leaders in the capital Kiev.

"Today a major operation was prepared on all fronts and it was repulsed," Mr. Parubiy told a briefing in Kiev, according to the Interfax news agency.

Russia

In Moscow, officials said the instability in the region cast further doubt on the elections.

"We will follow how the preparations for these elections go and make our conclusions based on their results," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said. "We can't express anything other than indignation about the atmosphere in which the preparations for these elections are being conducted."

The US

The Pentagon also announced that a U.S. guided missile cruiser will enter the Black Sea on Friday for training with U.S. allies.

NATO

"It's too early to know where they're moving to or how many of them are moving," Gen. Philip Breedlove, NATO's top military commander said after a meeting in Brussels of military officers from NATO's 28 members. "But what we do know is that the force that remains on the border is very large, and it's very capable, and it remains in a very coercive posture."

What about Zionist Jews that revive and promote a fascist dictator state in a Country that defeated it 69 years ago, the same fascist dictator state by the way that ironically built ghettos and exterminated millions of European Jews (or so the story goes)...  They are also threatening or killing ethnic Jews of both Ukrainian or Russian descent?

Hmmm?... How do you get your "hands clean" after something like that???....

Or maybe dirty hands never mattered in the first place!!!

You can find evidence that most generals in the military viewed the use of the atomic bombs as unnecessary.

The million lives saved was and is the cover story. It's another myth.

Truman used the bombing as lesson for the Russians because his Administration did not want the war to end with the Russian invasion of Japan and neither did the Japanese emporer.

Significant footnote AF

Lest the mindlessly corrupt, incompetent and ignorant American population forget the same Russians that won us WWII and suffered the heaviest casualties on their front(s) among the allied forces.

President Truman?  Isn't that the same Harry S. that sent 54,000 Americans to their deaths and killed more than 3 million Korean and Chinese forces in less than two years compared to the 10 year war that claimed 58,000 in Vietnam and 2 million dead Vietnamese?...

And as luck would have?  Ho Chi Minh had pleaded with him to bring as many military bases to his Country afte WWII as he saw fit with the only proviso being that the French be withdrawn from his Country which Harry -just couldn't do!...

What a guy that Harry!!!

Got it!  You're either a politician or a lobbyist.

If you're either one of those I completely understand where you are coming from, cause those are about the only two that will remain unaffected in "new" longterm America which is probably at this stage less than 24 to 36 months.

Ukraine: Army Soldiers Killed In Friendly Fire Incident?

Something weird happened in east Ukraine today. Allegedly some insurgents from the "Gorlovka" group attacked a Ukrainian military checkpoint near the town Volnovakha in Donetsk oblast. Some 13 soldiers were killed, over 30 wounded and several armored personal carriers were destroyed (vid). There are no reports yet of wounded or killed insurgents.

It does not sound plausible to me that a group of rag tag insurgents only recently formed and without much fighting experience attacks a platoon plus size military unit and destroys it completely.

There is also video that shows two Ukrainian MI24-Hind helicopter gunships making several heavy bomb runs in the area of the incident. The Guardian's Shaun Walker confirmed that Ukrainian helicopters were involved. One explosion in the video seems to be followed by heavy secondary ones which is typically the case when an armed vehicle with lots of ammunition on board gets hit.

Did those helicopter pilots hit the Ukrainian military unit? That would explain the high casualty rate and rather heavy damage.

Was the checkpoint attacked before the helicopters destroyed it? By whom?

They are collateral damage in the battle of The Grand Chessboard.

Best option for Ukraine might be if ukrainian army taking over, eliminating oligarch pest and kicking CIA scum out of your country.

The catalyst for war has not been diminished as many people have hoped it would once the world matured. National pride, political agendas, religious and ethnic hatreds are some of the biggest roadblocks to world peace.

Often we seem to forget as we look back to World War II and past a dozen "lesser Conflicts" peace has been the exception rather then the rule for hundreds and thousands of years. The true reality is that across the world few mothers want to see their children killed and most farmers want to be left along to raise their crops and earn a living. More on the subject of war as a solution to conflict in the article below.

The problems for Ukraine are just starting. Currently much of this has been a war of words but the potential for this to escalate into a shooting war is real. Allowing events to deteriorate into a major war or possibly into what some see as World War III is becoming a reality.

As insane as it appears this could become the final outcome. The location of this as a military confrontation is right in Putin's backyard and this is a strong advantage for Russia. It is silly to think Putin and Russia will back down. This means poking the bear is not a smart move. More on this subject in the article below.
