The US Government Explained In One Chart
The oligarchic pilfering and capital misallocating and squandering network of insiders known as "government" truly deserves a picture rather than 1000 words.
Still, here are a few words via Bill Bonner from Acting Man blog, who explains that...
Government’s primary concern is not to protect its citizens or their economy. Instead, it aims to transfer more power, status, and wealth to the elite who control it (the oligarchs).
And to do that, it must keep the masses (the poligarchs) sedated. As Charles Hugh Smith, chief writer at OfTwoMinds.com, explains:
"The State has two core mandates: enforce quasi-monopolies and cartels for private capital, and satisfy enough of the citizenry’s demands for more benefits to maintain social stability. If the State fails to maintain monopolistic cartels, profit margins plummet and capital is unable to maintain its spending on investment and labor. Simply put, the economy tanks as profits, investment and growth all stagnate. If the State fails to satisfy enough of the citizenry’s demands, it risks social instability."
The feds will be the borrowers of last resort. But the money won’t be invested in a brighter future. It will be pilfered and squandered.

There are surely some members of Oligarchy in the government; the government's decisionmaking faculties have been been overrun and become controlled by those from the Oligarchy.
That's not the same as the government being the Oligarchy. The government is just a convenient juicy host for the parasite; which is a very effective parasite that commandeers the government's body and brain and reprograms it for its own purposes --- while making every effort to see the public doesn't notice, so there's no panic about oligarchical forces taking over.
The Oligarchy expands well outside the bounds of government -- so it is still meaningful to make a distinction between government and the rest.

Personally, I have not noticed any difference from more formal laws against organized crime and terrorists, since those were always actually applied more against marijuana than anything else. ... Until there actually is enough democidal martial law to change the basic way that the established systems operate, to change gears from treating people like they to niggers, to treating them like they were natives, there is nothing new in being treated like slaves with no rights. Things will only be significantly different if, or when, we start getting treated like natives, herded into reserve concentration camps, and democidally wiped out by those processes.

I recently found myself thinking about the decline or collapse of great empires and realized that it is often hard to predict when or how their demise will occur. Many analogies can be taken from this idea, the empire need not be great and timing is always hard to correctly gauge.
Today a big topic is the huge growth in inequality. Those who look closely understand that it is not the 1% at the top stealing the icing off the cake, but the much smaller .1% or .01% that are skewing the numbers and overreaching. I contend this goes hand in hand with the massive growth in crony capitalism and corruption.
The signs of decline may be everywhere but that does not guarantee the end is near. As the foundation crumbles away it is not uncommon for those in power to extend their rule by many tricks and changing the rules in order to gain a new lease on life. Minimum wage laws have a similar story. It's always about money and destroying the competition. Back in the days of old, the mostly white American population generally preferred white employees. The only way for minorities or immigrants to get jobs was to work for less money. Understandably, white people didn't like being underbid, so they passed minimum wage laws. With the law forcing employers to pay the same amount for white workers and black workers, employers would pick white workers every time.
