How Americans Spend Their Time Online
We have good news for budding entrepreneurs considering launching yet another online method of stalking the object of their affection: exhibitionism and sharing photos of your dinner, pardon social networking, remains as popular as ever on the internet.
According to an online survey by GfK and the Interactive Advertising Bureau, people said they spent about an average of 37 minutes a day on social networks like Facebook and Twitter in 2013. That internet staple, emailing, clocked in at a 29 minutes, while watching online video was 23 minutes.
However, in a troubling trend for the YouTubes of the world, the WSJ notes that while people doubled the amount of time they spent watching online video over the past four years, the overall percentage of their online time spent watching video slipped to 12% in 2013 from 13% the year before.
But the worst news is for that biggest loser of all in the New Online Normal: legacy media, whose paper publications are an endangered anachronism in a day and age when everyone reads (if only the headlines) on their mobile device, is also getting hammered when it comes to its online incarnation, with the average American spending just 5 minutes reading online newspapers, less than even blogs.
Of course, when the day comes that the final investigative reporter and journalist loses their job, suddenly the question will arise what will all those 20-some year old "journalism" majors whose only skill is to copy and paste, do?
For now nobody cares to even contemplate this issue: they are too busy updating their NSA Facebook profiles.

Does watching teh pr0n fall under 'Other' or 'Online video'?
"Social"
Trekkie Monster knows what the internet is for.

Uh, I think it was an article in Wired, a result of concerted examination of web traffic, concluded that some 60% of the net was porn. Just sayin'... But then again, what counts as a "social network"?
By porn, you mean of a sexual nature and not common news porn/propaganda...what Jayz and P DiidlieSquat are babbling about this very instant, the latest Pat Sajac jab at global warming hysterics and the heavilly massaged numbers of our current crop Princeton dominated Keynesian wunder kids skating on thin ice...right? ;-)
Yeah, I meant the sleazy, no kiddies allowed (God help us on that thought... a lot of truly sick fucks out there...) X rated stuff.
Not the propaganda, etc., the bread and circus, brainwash, perceptions management shit
BTW, ran across some pretty sick references to 50's Operation paperclip guys MKULTRA, buried deep, operating on Canada, fucking up small kids real good. Man, if that shit is true, is explosive! But docs sealed under interests of "national security"
People would be surprised what passes for "national security interests" before...and now. I know if I ever caught one of these kiddie porn types it would be a cheap fix for what ails them.
I would call it Alpha Predators.
"There is one great thing that you men will all be able to say after this war is over and you are home once again. You may be thankful that twenty years from now when you are sitting by the fireplace with your grandson on your knee and he asks you what you did in the fake war in Afganistan, you WON'T have to cough, shift him to the other knee and say, "Well, your Granddaddy was a member of the Federal Reserve Board." No, Sir, you can look him straight in the eye and say, "Son, your Granddaddy surfed porn on the Internet and enjoyed Zero Hedge."
Bullish FB, Tw, no?
WTF?
The "ZeroHedge" circle was too big to fit into the graphic?
"the average American spending just 5 minutes reading online newspapers, less than even blogs."
nobody reads blogs anymore
I just got back from 10 days in Italy. Porn is thousands of years old. It's just better now.
nmewn:
I believe "what Jayz and P DiidlieSquat are babbling about this very instant" would qualify as bread and circus. LOL
31 = p0rn
I spend most of my time skimming an article here and then spend all of my time reading your comments......Hmmm...maybe I shouldn't post this....
definitely should be its own category for me.
my internet surfing breakdown looks something like 50% pornhub, 40% zerohedge, and the last 10% is sending emails to my now estranged friends, family, colleaguse, and acquaintneces about 9/11 truth, the fed, the coming collapse, while never getting any responses outside of: "go fuck yourself and stop emailing me you tinfoil hat wearing terrorist"
10+
Both.

Been spending the last several hours learning about MGTOW (Men going their own way) and other eye opening videos as relates to dating, marriage, hypergamy and other really interesting terms. Best conclusion so far?
No children planned = ZERO marriage. Risk Analysis would shit a brick if I ever considered a legal contract of that nature.
MGTOWHQ is a great site.
I love it. Wish I had found that place before getting hitched.
If your thinking of getting married. JUST SAY NO.
JUST SAY NO!!!
bullshit, porn must be in the double digits anyway
"Other"
More like triple digits
Where does porn fall under, online video or other?
Both...
Five minutes a day? I don't think I clock 5 min a year. May be people have finally realized what worthless tripe MSM is in all forms.
Miffed;-)
Not sure which is worse though, getting the news from the MSM or from Facebook........
Oh shit... no comparison. Facebook has much better news.
What's Facebook?
what's an apartheid? (& who's not living in one?)
what's a democracy? (& who's living in one?)
where is shopping- Must be double digits. Useless shit Amerikans love to buy online
masters of divergence and distraction.
epistles too,
take note and .....
you know what?
man oh man,

HOOKERS & BLOW..... ...... .....
Other = Porn
;-)
Other == porm + ZH
Tiddlywinks?
It seems Obunga has locked herself in a rotating 'golf bag' and run out of clubs/ sand wedges. Hope and CHANGE!
Legacy media either wants to charge me a fee or make me sign up. Neither is going to happen. Free and no sign in, or on to the next site. This is the age of "free".
No porn category there WSJ.
WTF??
That falls under the "Other" category.
Which I notice is a pretty BIG category...
Can't talk, too busy baitin'...
I went to sea and was an apprentice baiter, after s couple of years......
I call bullshit on this report. It's a clear fact the 80% of internet traffic is porn related.
I have 2 stunningly beautiful daughters who don't even think about having sex.
When I was their age I would have fucked a snake if I could grab it by the head!
I think the internet has fostered a turning inward for most people and they play out their fantasies with themselves and use erotic video to facilitate it.
Poor old me, It was a long time for me since my last lady, but damn if I didn't get lucky a few weeks ago!
There's nothin like the real think Baby! Had a great time! Still in the hunt too!
So would you say you are a Master Baiter now?
It's almost all porn, no matter what they call it:
. . . . . . Social Networks = porn
. . . . . . Online Video = porn
. . . . . . Search = porn
. . . . . . Other = porn
. . . . . . Email = mostly deleting porn spam
Social networks: cybersex / nude selfies
Email: cock jokes
Online video: who needs a 40 minute video?
Search: turn off safe filter
Online games: roleplay. or just watch. hi natasha. :)
Blogs: amature tits
Online radio: lesbian phone-in agony aunt podcast. oh yeah
Online newspaper: www.tinfoilhats.something
Online magazines: surfing with the Heff
Other: wikipedia/penis fish. that can't be real, surely
Penis fish- so called because they can enter the urethra- Ouch! Ever seen a Penis Snake- very fucking freaky. I urge you all to search Penis Snake images. If you still use Farcebook it is a great image to post there.
A more insightful survey would breakdown by gender.
Example:
Males: Porn 80% , Shopping for Guns and Motorcycles (20%)
Females: Shopping for Clothes and Shoes (90%), Marriage Planning sites (10%)
you got trashed...guess there's at least one guy here that spends 30% of his time buying guns and bikes.
The contents of a womans magazine?
50% - "Oh darling, accept yourself. Feel good about the way you are."
50% - Diets, Diet programs, more Diets. How to lose fat.
I guess the search volume from woman is similar (at least from what I observed from the only female living under this roof - the cat doesn't count, she only eats, shits and sleeps).
Youtube used to be very helpful in breaking down by gender, geographic location (country) and age (if possible).
Since retiring from running my ship, and realizing that I can't Free (the) Enterprise, I spend way TMF time blogging.
Especially on the one site that makes the most sense to a rational and bullshit-intolerant alpha male, who will only accept "truth at any cost, and truth regardless of implications".
No kidding and no hedging.
You must be Canadian... He does'nt even mention his porn surfing, and the NSA knows.
before social media, internet was making people more intelligent
that was a problem for tptb obviously & they've fixed it in a few years only;
looking back at pre-2005, i must say i'm impressed by how they took back control on information, was thinking at that time that the web would take power from them; how wrong was that ?
tptb are experts in dumbing down the people, no one can argue with that (they 're also very good at pretending to fail so people don't realize how good they are at what they do)
It wouldn't have worked if people didn't want to be stupid.
Those of us who aren't haven't gone away: we're simply out-numbered.
People who can't read are food for the machine.
It's funny, porn could be included in the first top 6 catagories, and it probably is!
The internet's for losers
Combine Facebook with Porn and you've got yourself a Goldmine....oh wait a minute....never mind, forget that idea.
These numbers don't anywhere near add to what's observed.
People spend a lot of time online watching video, hours a day some, certainly 30 minutes a day is a bare minimum.
Then on top of that the responses on twitter TO headlines posted from various sites, & comments on those sites, shows a lot more usage than what's being reported here.
Youtube has also since denigrated its own site by no longer permitting video replies.
It's their call but this means people who made a video just to reply in video form to another video now just won't.
A few will insist and insert links in descriptions saying what video / topic it's on response to but some just won't care and just stopped making videos.
Also, youtube's new comment system drives a lot of people nuts and I've noticed since then comments plummet like a rock which means references to videos / topics in comments also dropped like a rock.
Subscriptions became harder to use & making a playlist of a specific topic near impossible to navigate so I certainly gave up for good.
Add to that other annoyances with youtube & benefits of a separate VLC window to watch youtube video while reading other things and I used downloadhelper & other apps to get the video as a file.
I don't watch it so it may never log as a "watched" video, online, I stream the file to a disk and play it later. Since I can see zerohedge under a partially transparent video window forced to the foreground I can keep up on 2 types of news at the same time.
I don't give a flying fuck if that helps or hurts video stats for what appears to be watched or not.
