China Attacks, Sinks Vietnamese Fishing Vessel, Situation "Very Tense"

Tyler Durden's picture

As if global investors needed another excuse to buy stocks, China has escalated geopolitical tensions to 11 on the Spinal Tap amplifier of seriousness. With over 70 vessels in and around the Paracel Islands - where China has provocatively placed an oil rig in disputed Vietnamese territorial waters - it was only a matter of time before the blue touch paper was lit. As Yahoo Japan reports, a Vietnamese fishing vessel has sunk after being rammed by a Chinese vessel and the 10 fishermen have been rescued. While Vietnam has not responded yet, the Coast Guard warned "the situation at the site it very tense."

Meanwhile, the two sides are also tossing verbal grenades...

Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry held a press conference on Friday when officials stressed the country’s historical claim to the Paracels.

“Historical and legal evidence shows that Vietnam has absolute sovereignty in the Paracel and Spratly archipelagos,” said Tran Duy Hai, deputy head of Vietnam’s National Border Committee.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang disagreed.

“Seeing that the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry held a press conference last Friday on the subject, I felt it was extremely ridiculous,” he said at a briefing on Monday. “The Paracels are the indisputable territory of the Chinese people.”

Considering that the 10 fishermen were rescued and not shot to death I don't think John Kerry should actually say to much on this one.

They did it once in the 70s. And I believe that they have done it several times before.

But then this is more a game of dick-wagging any how. China is trying to show all around and the rest of the world who has the bigger dick in Asia now that the DC US is bankrupt and nearly dead.

Vietnam will come to some kind of agreement with China and that will be that. The agreement with them and eventually the Philippines will involve relinquishing the "rocks" and surrounding territory to China or a promise of joint development with China. I.e. PetroChina will be in the driver's seat instead of the west's petro companies. Sorry Haliburton, Exxon, Chevron, BP...

Gulf of Tonkin - Take 2.

The first Gulf of Tonkin incident never happened:

“It was just confusion, and events afterwards showed that our judgment that we’d been attacked that day was wrong. It didn’t happen.” ~ Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense in 1964

Over 1,100 pages of previously classified Vietnam-era transcripts released this week by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee highlight the fact that several Senators knew that the White House and the Pentagon had deceived the American people over the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident.

If the Vietnamese really want protect their borders they have no choice but to go in hard, even if it means the lost of some valuable millitary ships. If they dilly dally around and allow china to stay without having to defend there rig, then the choges have won. An armed millitary confrontation is the only way to send a stern message to china that they must negotiate regarding the Spratly Island etc.

As for conventional hot wars, unlike China (who has fought the USSR, India, and the US), the USSA almost never fights its size - Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Cuba, Yugoslavia, Serbia, Grenada ...

Given the performance of the military in Korea and Vietnam, it's not hard to see why.

They really, really, don't like each other.  Vietnam's problem is that they don't belong to any alliance in that area.  Though they'd really like to form one up with say Japan or India.  They pretty much realize Obama isn't worth a cup of weak tea.

Every country in Asia hates every other Asian country, and hates the Chinese in particular. The Japanese might rival them for the hate crown abstractly, but the insular overseas Chinese communities within those nations keep the fires a little hotter, I think. They're called the Jews of Asia.

A lot of westerners imagine Asians crying out for one of their own to rise up and cast the Americans back across the sea, but this is not a good model.

Not enough oil there to even bother with.  Fishing rights may be important but basically this is just theatre for chinese domestic consumption.   Their bubble has burst, their Lehman moment has arrived, and they need a major distraction to take the plebes attention off how bad it is.  Vietnam is in the same boat (yeah, pun intended) so this works for them as well.

I see this as the run-up to the overthrow of communism in both countries.  Any way you look at it, communism is an abject failure.  Just as in Russia, it's only a matter of time.

Just to clarify.  First and foremost, I stand for personal freedom and the right of free association.

For all their flaws (and they are legion) any western nation you care to mention including the USA has more of both than any communist nation.  That's a fact, not an opinion.  Deal with it.

Things are a lot more complex than you seem to think.

To be persuasive in your argument for such a strong claim, you need to at least define "personal freedom", "right of free association", "any western nation", "communist nation", your standard of assessment, what constitutes "more of both".  You need to explain why your standard (frame of reference) is better than others, and you also need to make an evaluation of each country in your list of "western nations" and then a similar evaluation of each country in your list of "communist nations".

Do you  think the readers here would actually believe you have traveled to and lived in even a fraction of the countries involved long enough to make the kind of claims you are making?

Suppose I say that the US is more of a communist nation than China, or that China is more of a capitalist nation than the US. Can you refute my claims with clear cut evidence or arguments?

Wed, 05/28/2014 - 14:51 | 4802611 ebear
ebear's picture

There are only 3 or 4 communist nations remaining out of the dozen or more that existed post WWII.  The European ones are all gone.  That in itself speaks volumes.  The lack of personal freedom and freedom of association in those nations is well documented, as I'm sure you know.

As for the West, and I'm refering to the democratic nations of Western Europe and North America (sorry if that wasn't clear enough) again, the record speaks for itself.  Only Fascist Spain (where I lived in 1975) failed the test, and that was gone by 1978.

Yes there are nuances, but there are clear differences as well.  I don't need to make a list - three points should make my argument:

1. The right to form political parties.  Non-existent by definition under communism.

2. Freedom of religion.  Banned or state sponsored in most communist nations.

3. Formation of private capital.  Limited or non-existent apart from modern China, which by allowing it (for now) is moving away from communism, but towards what?  Fascism, by the looks of it.  Wake me up when they allow competing political parties and free elections.

That's about all I have to say on the matter.  If you want to refute it, go ahead, but be aware - this thread is already stale, so there won't be too many reading it - one of the weaknesses of zero hedge.

addendum:

for the record, nations and territories I've lived in or have visited in the past 35 years.:

UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, China, Hong Kong, Macau,  Japan, Thailand, Tahiti.

note Portugal was communist when I was there.  It didn't last long.

I have got to say looking at that photo the islands look closer to China than they do Vietnam if you conclude that Tawiwan is part of China. Observing the size difference (economic and military) between Vietnam and China I would say it is time for Vietnam to give this some serious thought.

The entire country of Vietnam has an unmistakable Chinese cultural heritage, far more so than the Tibetans and the Uighurs. In fact, many so-called Vietnamese are actually Chinese by ethnicity. One can tell the difference by their fair complexion and facial features.

Same for Laos, Korea (North and South), and Japan (whose language extensively incorporates Chinese characters - a reason why Chinese tourists never have problems finding hotels, restaurants, airports, and train stations in Japan).

NO, the US will not, and cannot defend Vietnam. The US didn't even manage to defend South Vietnam against North Vietnam in the 60s when the US was at the pinnacle of its power.

Second, Vietnam is not being invaded by anyone. Disputes about some rocks in the South China Sea is not the same as one country making a claim for, and trying to take over another.

What the US can do is print more money or borrow more money from China to buy 100 or 200 destroyers at 5 or 6 billion each. If the 600 Billion price tag is unacceptable, then outsource the construction to China, where 2 or 3 Billion will do per copy.

Two forces at play. First, a growing China is desperate for oil, they have almost none. Second, China's leaders need to rally nationalism for their masses to stay in power as their economy iver indebted and with increasingly corrupt beaurocrats.
