Obama To Authorize Weapons Training Of Syrian "Rebels"

Tyler Durden's picture

This will end well. President Obama is, according to WSJ, close to authorizing the US military to train "moderate" Syrian rebels. The move - clearly expanding Washington's role in the conflict and a subtle side-swipe at Putin - is aimed at providing a seemingly arbitrary group of rebels with weapons training to fight against both Bashar al-Assad's regime's army as well as Al-Qaeda-linked groups. One quick question - how will Obama determine who is 'moderate' and who is full Al-Qaeda-tard?

As WSJ reports,

A new military training program, if implemented, would supplement a small train-and-equip program led by the Central Intelligence Agency which Mr. Obama authorized a year ago.

U.S. officials said the new military program would represent a significant expansion of Washington's public efforts. U.S. officials don't discuss the CIA's limited training program because it is covert.

Only supporting the moderates - not the real crazies?

"The president will make clear his intention to expand our support to the moderate Syrian operation and increase our support to Syria's neighbors, who are dealing with the terrorist threats emanating from the situation Assad has created in Syria," a senior administration official said.

The proposed military training mission has been the subject of a nearly yearlong Obama administration debate pitting top American diplomats seeking leverage to pressure Mr. Assad against Pentagon leaders wary of open-ended commitments that risk deepening U.S. involvement in another messy Middle Eastern conflict.

Defense officials said it was unclear when training, which would be undertaken by U.S. special-operations forces, would get under way, citing obstacles that include how the Pentagon will vet prospective rebels for the program.

We are sure they will figure it out?

And here comes the Middle East pressure...

The move toward deeper U.S. involvement reflects a growing realization within the White House that more needs to be done to build up the capabilities of a proxy force inside Syria capable of challenging al Qaeda. Washington increasingly fears al Qaeda's network of foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq will become capable of threatening U.S. allies in the region, including Jordan.

The move also comes in response to mounting pressure on the White House from Middle Eastern allies who say Mr. Obama's reluctance to support moderate fighters has allowed al Qaeda-linked groups to now dominate the opposition.

...

The Western-backed Free Syrian Army has been fighting a two-front war, against Mr. Assad and his allies on one side, and against al Qaeda and its allies on the other, but commanders say they have received scant support from the U.S.

During his visit, Mr. Jarba met with Mr. Obama and top officials at the White House and the State Department. Mr. Jarba also requested a meeting with Mr. Hagel, but a senior defense official said the Pentagon chief's schedule at the time was booked. "There was not a concerted effort not to meet with him," the senior defense official said. "It was a scheduling thing."

But...

Administration lawyers have raised other legal concerns about the proposed military program, holding up its final approval, officials said.

And...

Jordanian officials have privately told their American counterparts that they are worried a large overt training program on their territory could prompt the Assad regime or al Qaeda to retaliate against the Hashemite Kingdom.

This has always worked so well in the past and we are sure this administration will execute flawlessly. One quick question... will "Hijacking airplanes for disgruntled Al Qaeda operatives 101", pardon, Syrian rebels, be on the curriculum?

Thirteen years and now the longest war in American history...the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan...supposedly because Afghanistan was allowing the military training of these exact same terrorists?

The proposed military training mission has been the subject of a nearly yearlong Obama administration debate pitting top American diplomats Arab gas producers seeking leverage to pressure Mr. Assad...

Please ignore that the 9/11 planes were allegedly taken over by Saudi Arabians, not Afghanis.

Now we can understand even better why the dancing Israelis were dancing on 9/11.

Beat me to it. Hillary and Obama didn't send ship loads of arms from Benghazi to Syria 9via Turkey) for no good reason.

Those nice fellows in Syria need to learn how to use those anti-aircraft missiles. We also need to allow them to travel to Mexico for the then safe passage across the border where they will get picked up by the cops in Texas only to be released with their weapons in tow.

One might think the Houston or DFW airports would be a good and easy starting point. Maybe Jerry Jones will sell them a suite so that they can fire right from the stadium and it can be broadcast on the 80yd long HD screen?

Chomsky has repeatedly said that crimes committed by us are never crimes at all.

Assad and Qaddaffi became international pariahs when a substantial number of the population decided to no longer support and then actively worked to topple the regime.  Assad and Qaddaffi then predictably began to attack these "terrorists" with the military forces.

Now, in the Ukraine, you have the same thing.  You have regions that just don't want to be part of the corrupt Kiev game anymore.  Theyve had enough and looking to get out from under the thumb of Kiev.  Kiev's reaction?  The same as Assad and Qaddaffi.  Instantly label *ALL* opposition as terrorists.  The only difference is that, unlike Qaddaffi, Kiev has managed to use it's air force planes in attacking "terrorists".

Just participate in any effort to improve the lives of Arab people living under Israeli control, or Somali people living in Warlordistan, and you'll find out in a hurry what a federal crime is.

I can't get caught up in the excitement about the IRS being used to hassle the Tea Party groups because my parents were active in opposition to the Viet Nam War, and they got audited every year.  Plus our phone always crackled and popped and sometimes wouldn't hang up, and for a time there were cars parked in front of our house whose well-dressed occupants never got out until they drove off.  And my parents were obscure college types; not even mouthy or visible.  So yeah, the IRS still gets used to hassle political opponents.

And there are some funny videos on YouTube of people who have never even gotten a traffic ticket but were spotted in pro-Palestinian rallies, videotaping the Federal agents who came to their home to vaguely intimidate them.

To add to that...  Anyone interested in figuring out what could have potentially been used with highly reactive thermite as a "detonator" of sorts to melt 110,000 tons of structural steel that creates an enormous cloud of pulverized dust???

While this has been bantered about for several years now, I think it becomes more of growing concern to understanding exactly what happened that day when you heard the words of our illustrious President just 2 months ago about his biggest concerns outside the U.S. starting a World War with Russia.

What a strange thing for him to say?... And doesn't it raise more than a "red flag" when he spoke those words right after Israel announced the closing of all it's embassies Worldwide due to a labor dispute?...

Dual citizen Chertoff (then Asst Atty Gen for the Justice Dept) ran the op to release and scurry the vermin back to ISR.  They were emplyed by ISR citizen Domnick Suter's Urban Moving Systems whose offices nationwide were cohencidentally shut down on 9/11 and who fled to ISR.

Chertoff's consulting group (The Chertoff Group) represents both of the manufacturers of the airport full body scanners that were deployed following 9/11.  Sen Lieberman (Likud-West) pushed through the contracts.  Chertoff was on the jewtube's talking head shows 24/7 telling us how much we need body scanners at the airport...while cohencidentally neglecting to mention how much he (and for example Soros) stood to make from the deals.

His cousin Benjamin Chertoff authored the Popular Mechanics article "Debunking The 9/11 Lies".  No bias in that title, and the article was thin on facts.

The trigger-response cycle seems to be about 20 years in most cases, which is roughly the time it takes for the kids whom we offer in the process of empire-building to grow up, nurturing revenge plans sophisticated enough to work.

It's called long term plannig.

In case of Assad - since he's an ally of Russia, Syrian campaign is more of a proxy war between our 2 nations. Think of it as olympics. The games were supposedly designed to showcase power without actually having to sacrifice soldiers in the process. Proxy wars offer a way to get people to slaughter eachother on your behalf. US feeds weapons and intelligence to Assad opposition. Russia feeds intelligence and weapons to Assad and that way we're looking at who's got the best stuff.

Add a decade or 2 and there'll be terrorist attacks in both countries for reasons quickly forgotten. US and Russia will both say that the terrorists hate their freedom and use the opportunity to reduce privacy and freedom even further. Win win for the MIC.

Again the facts are that any "moderate" organic syrian rebellion, if there ever was one has collapsed. There is a reconciliation program in Syria so most of the old FSA have been assimilated back into life as Syrians ( and many are fighting along side the army in the NDF ) and any of the low IQ low rent nihists have gone from fighting a war to being a modern day highwayman running wildcat checkpoints, kidnapping or smuggling for profit.

They use the word "FSA" when they want something from the west. Now you have the Islamic front & Al-Nusra and ISIS principly either way you have virulent fake mulsims who will kill until they find respite in death.

They better hurry up because al QUsayer fell last year, Qualamoun is gone, Homs is clean, Aleppo, Daraa and Jawbar are on fire as is deir el-zor. IGnore the odd promo piece of the rebels walking around an abandoned boneyard claiming it is a military base. The Western backed terrorists ( who are the same ones which necessitate the TSA checking your coffee in the boarding areas and making your grandmother remove her diaper ) are in collapse.

Sum total - like I have been saying for a year now. Short of direct western intervention which would start world war 3, this will wind down into a prolonged terror campaign. Congratulations West, Gulf Coast, Israel. You lost ANOTHER war, and thankfully we don't have a failed state to show for it.

There used to be a significant Christian minority in Syria. However, the AQ liver-eaters have pretty much shot down and chased off that whole lot. Same things as happened in Iraq after the US invasion, curiously enough. The Jews and the Palestinians chased the Christians out of Palestine, so I think their only region left is in the hill country in Lebanon.

Oh, and Hezbollah is against the Wahabbis and the foreign mercenaries. That's why Israel keeps bombing them.

The Irony here is syria, with its cultural mosaic and sectarian government are as close to a model for the region as there has been, and scores of moderate secular muslims can be found to this second ( the syrians, not the western backed foreigners ). You're wrong and this isn't an argument it is a statement of fact.

Nobody on the actual "Left" has ever supported Obama.  From his days in the Illinois Legislature, Obama has been the creature of Finance, indistinguishable from Bush, Romney, McCain, or for that matter, Bill Clinton.

The thing is, the actual "Left" in the US is such a tiny and ignored minority, most people don't know they exist and think Democratic Party bandwagon-jumpers are "Left."  They're not.  They're basically non-ideological, like the two parties, and support a certain form of rhetoric more than anything else.  For instance, both McCain and Obama promised, if elected, to appoint Geithner as Secretary of the Treasury.  Counterpunch, one of the only available "Left" outlets, proclaimed how Geithner, along with Rahm Emmanuel, Hilary Clinton and Robert Gates, proved that Obama represented the exact same interests McCain did, and any differences were aesthetic.  The Nation and Huffington Post, on the other hand, seemed to believe the Fox News/WorldNetDaily spin that Obama is some sort of Socialist, or even a Communist.  Hell, Obama isn't even a Liberal.

So to find those on the left speaking out against Obama, you have to find the acutal left.  They've been yelling about him for 7 years.

Yes, it was the delusional belief that if all the Christians were ethnically cleansed from Iraq & Syria they'd move to Lebanon and become zionists.

They used their homebrew AQ to disguise the partition of Iraq, but it didn't work in Lebanon and isn't working in Syria without an occupying army to provide direct support.

Tue, 05/27/2014 - 12:04 | 4798644 swmnguy

Doc, I firmly believe you are correct.  Chaos is the intent.  In general I won't suspect a conspiracy or a deep agenda when simple incompetence and stupidity will explain it, but when the exact same course of action is applied in so many situations over such a long time, eventually one has to deduce it's intentional.  Then, baffling though that might be, one has to work backwards and try to induce what might be the intent behind what appears to be an incredibly consistent record of failure.

The creation of dumpster fires on the perimeter of China and Russia, and anywhere there are deposits of strategic resources including energy, and the transit routes for such resources, seems to be an end in and of itself.  From that observation, one can infer the strategic reasoning.

Or you can just read Brzezinski's "The Grand Chessboard" from about 25 years ago.  It's all over the Web in .pdf format.
