Over A Thousand Soldiers Killed As Ukraine Fighting Escalates, Russian Media Reports

Tyler Durden's picture

While one should take locally sourced news on the volatile situation in Ukraine, reported by media that is ideologically close to the source, with a grain of salt, Russian press agency RIA has generally had a good track record in reporting news regarding the Ukraine civil war. In which case if the following report of what may have happened overnight during the latest escalation of fighting in the eastern Ukraine city of Slavyansk, and which certainly doesn't paint the Ukraine army in a favorable light, is even partially correct one can see why suddenly western media news coverage of the civil war in Ukraine has become somewhat sparse.

According to RIA, quoting Slaviansk people's mayor Vyacheslav Ponomaryov, about 1,200 Ukrainian army soldiers have been killed during a special operation in Slaviansk, and eight helicopters and 15 armored vehicles were destroyed. Supposedly this includes the 1 helicopter whose crash was reported previously.

"According to our information, the Ukrainian army has the following losses and damages: 1,200-1,300 people were killed, eight helicopters, 15 armored transport vehicles, and three [artillery] weapons destroyed. They are suffering huge losses. I’m speaking only about Slaviansk," Ponomaryov said in an interview with the Latvian radio station Baltkom.

Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov confirmed Thursday the downing of a military helicopter had killed 14 Ukrainian servicemen, including a general. Soon after that, the Ukrainian National Guard clarified that 12, not 14 people were killed in the Mi-8 helicopter crash near Slaviansk.

The people’s mayor also noted that the self-defense forces of Slaviansk had lost about 200 people.

"About 200 were killed and 300 wounded," Ponomaryov specified.

Ponomaryov also mentioned that several civilians died and eight people were wounded yesterday.

Meanwhile, as the media curtain descends, the fighting on the ground is escalating:

The troops involved in the military operation in southeastern Ukraine began firing mortars at Slaviansk Tuesday at around noon local time. Several private homes were razed, including houses in the villages of Andreevka and Sergeevka in the city’s suburbs. Several dozen people were killed.

Alexei Pushkov, the head of the Russian Duma’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, wrote Wednesday that the Kiev interim authorities are lying when they claim the residential areas in eastern Ukraine are not being targeted by troops.

The active phase of the military operation has now been suspended, Ukraine's UNIAN news agency reported Thursday.

Perhaps the best indicator of how accurate this report is will come from the Kremlin itself: if indeed the fighting is as extensive as reported, Russia's previous suggestion for humanitarian intervention will morph from a polite offer to a stern warning about what the Russians will do, if not outright border-crossing action.

The wife made the statement this morning "...leaning towards civil war", and I had to stop her and say "already is."

Let's put this in perspective. The US lost 4800+ troops from 2003-2008 in the Iraq War, which was full on combat (during much of that time). They've lost 1200 in just a matter of less than a month. Let's call this what it is.

Wont be very long before the East Ukrainians go on the offensive and take the fight to Kiev.  I am surprised they haven't done the proverbial car bombs in Kiev yet.  Gotta let those morons walking the streets safely there know what it feels like when innocent civillians get hit by mortars.  A few car bombs should do just nicely.

LOL Omen you are right on the money, Putin shares the wealth, that guy from Chechnya Khadarovsy, I forgot this name, but he was in Crimea real estate shopping amongst some of those really nice mansions, and so were some of the Tatar guys from the Urals (not the same kind of tatars as the turks in Crimea call themselves).  Some of the prettiest coastline in Europe is being shared.  Expect Crimea to really act more like a cement for the Russians as many powerbrokers buy and invest there and enjoy the sunny skies that are now part of Russia again.  It pays to be part of Russia.  Lots of Chechens expected in Crimea to open up and do business etc.

Perhaps I overstated things. I will admit to being a *slight* fan of Putin until the invasion of Ukraine.

Yes, Cosmo, he is not all bad. There! I said it! Some of the massive Oil Revenue is filtering out to the people who are the rightful owners. Crumbs from the plate are still something, I guess.

And Putin has gotten “the trains to run on time” and he will continue to curb *some* of the excesses of the oligarchs. Yes yes yes. But he is not the one to root out the systemic corruption as he is reliant on it. And he is a major Kleptocrat in his own right. Servants don’t become BILLIONAIRES.

Cosmo, in the not so long run, Russia needs a real democracy, it needs press freedoms, it needs the ability of the opposition (whomever they might come to be) to meet and assemble and protest. Russians need to be presented with real choices and accurate information. The USA has lost that…do you want to end up like us, a tragic land where the proud and free now work for minimum wages paid by multinational corporations?

You might be on the rise in Russia but for how long? Putin’s style and the police state he offers has short run advantages only. On the longer scale, you and I both know that the odds are that the Great Man will bring the nation down if not to ruin.

I see Putin as the type of leader who uses his nation as his personal toy to be broken or abused as he sees fit.

Ukraine has been Putin’s grand distraction. Weren’t you folks complaining of corruption and civil liberty issues before this Ukraine crap started?  At what point will you be allowed to push for reform again?  Never?

Be forewarned lots of really cute girls and it can get addictive.  I prefer the Russia and Ukraine girls, I usually chill in their chat room, listen to their music and just tip once in a while to say thanks while I do my work on the computer, its nice to have a pretty girl to look at and chat with once in a while.  I usually do one or two shows with them in the begining when I first come across a girl I like, and then just stay in the chill mode since they know me.  They do pretty good business so they don't pressure you into more shows. Very nice girls next door types.  I have my favorites list and can see when one is online through that.

it's not a war until msnbcnbccbcpbscnnabc declare it so. the sheeple will watch and be told the u.s. military is not being aggresive enough. the west point cadettes , a collective group of storm trooper automata shieleded from the rank and file will be told that as, officers, they must attack and kill and agress against the whole world.

if they cannot do it, immigrants will be made officers and have their families threatened with deportation if it even would ever come to that.

out of 300 million human beings there are MORE THAN ENOUGH who embrace full scale genocide upon their own people , let alone the rest of the world, to promote up the ranks and control the officer class.

truly, between drones , engineers and the fortress of telecommunications outposts around the world, there really is a nexus of control not before possible in civilizatoin.

networks of just a few ten's of thoursands of sattelites and  drone's , operated continuously by remote station, can do the work of what in the past would have taken unsustainable levels of peak force.

this isn't an improvement in global scale air---warfare, it's a complete phase transition.

and this phase transition is already arriving in the navy. the army will be the last to truly benefit from this transition. but it already is.

the amount of steal and fuel in an ATTACK submarine can make 10's of thousands of small distributed solar and ambient hybyrid fuel cell powered remote communication mini-drones. an ocean covered in continuous operations UNMANNED mini vehicles is capable of the kind of operations not even close to possible by a few dozen patrolling submarines full of air breathing carbon ingesting and shitting human beings.

not least because of the psycological tolls of continuous uninterrupted performance outsoucred to shift workers on an unmanned base.

i dont' think enough people apprecitate this , and even those who do are sometimes to quick to downplay this phase transition in warfare by mentioning it is all backstopped by nuclear weapons anyways.

but that is the point. strategic nuclear DEFENSE allows for the rollout of continuous drone warfare that could possibly erupt into full scale war if not for strategic nukes.....

it all works together. war has changed.

Either that number is hyperbole and propaganda, which is certainly a possibility or that's a real war there.  Perhaps the goal of the Brzezinksi foreign policy cabal of the Obama Regime (as opposed to their counterparts in the Neo-Con cabal) was exactly this.  A nasty civil war right on Russia's doorstep.  They don't give a shit about Ukraine or the Ukrainian populace.  Just a cynical move to tie Russia down in another unwanted war and border issue.   Keep them occupied.

Blackwater sits on the Western border, running improvised training camps for Maidan participants. They don't risk their own lives unnecessarily.

The problem is that Ukrainian army is small and the portion of those willing to kill neighbors on command is even smaller. Eventually mercs willl run out of cannon fodder. What then? Russia can keep their supplies flowing. There are plenty of volunteers eager to cross the border in order to oppose what is being portrayed in the media as a neo-nazi threat. Those volunteers are indistinguishable from the natives.

Good luck trying to smuggle Romanian and Polish mercs in Ukrainian uniform while keeping it a secret. You'll soon run out of cyanide pills.

Standard infantry doctrine - the defense is stronger than the offense and offense against dug in defenders requires 3 to 1 superiority to prevail.

Looks like the Ukrainians are using 35 to 40 year old weapons - the kind of stuff we had back in 1970. If just a few of the latest Russian shoulder fired missiles prevent close air support and if the Russian Separatists were equipped with the latest night vision equipment - goggles and scope sights - along with the most modern shoulder fired anti armor rounds, a massacre would be inevitable.

In war sometimes the little things - those easily smuggled accross the border - are the most important.

The headlines today COVERED by the Western media detail the attack on Kiev/Western-aligned military.  But it's quite possible that the massacre conducted by the Kiev government earlier this week was the trigger for the current attack as retaliation.  I don't know.  But one thing is clear.  The Western media is skewing reportage, speaking of organic Eastern Ukrainian interests as those of "rebels" or "insurgents," whereas Nazi-sympathizing Western-backed forces are the good guys.  That's the narrative, while the truth is far more nuanced.

In Crimea his army was already there on the ground, he just flexed it a little.  Putin is smart, he will not invade Ukraine unless NATO moves in with troops over Ukraine's borders.  Putin just has to wait for the winter to come.

All those angry Ukrainians will kick out every westerner and come back to mother Russia.  So far things are not going well for the coup leaders and their new puppet president, another oligarch thug with clan connections.

Give it a few months and you will see by winter, Kiev besieged by the Eastern Ukrainians who will take over the reigns of power.  Why should Putin welcome back only East Ukraine when they can bring all of Ukraine with them lol.
