Top Chinese General Accuses US And Japan Of "Provocative Actions"; Russia Wonders Why "US Has To Lead"

Tyler Durden's picture

Now that the Ukraine pseudo civil war is slowly drifting off into limbo, with western support for the eastern regions of the nation no longer on the table, and Germany making it clear no further sanctions against Russia are coming, the Ukraine conflict is on its way to becoming a second Syria: a nation split in two, with US support for one group, Russian support for the other, and the only real victor being the Kremlin, which has regained possession of the Crimea (which earlier today officially adopted the Ruble as its currency). Which explains why the US, embarrassed in its foreign affairs for the second year in a row, is pivoting once again, only this time using China as a distraction.

On Friday, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said China has taken "destabilizing, unilateral actions asserting its claims in the South China Sea" (which incidentally is not called the South American Sea). Hagel added that the U.S. will continue to raise cyber issues with China, and by raising he likely meant accusing PLA members of hacking, resulting in China dropping more US tech firms as critical suppliers.Following the Us Defense Secretary, it was the turn of Japan's PM, Abe who said Japan would give more support to southeast Asian nations that are facing Chinese pressure.

He concluded that the U.S. takes no position on competing territorial claims, however the damage was already done: according the FT, a top Chinese general on Sunday accused the US and Japan of teaming up to stage “provocative actions” against China, as escalating maritime tensions spilled into an Asian regional defense forum.

Because if the US thought its latest pivot away from Russia and Syria into China (even if supported by Japan) would happen seamlessly, it is about to get an unpleasant surprise:

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Wang Guanzhong, deputy chief of the Chinese general staff, lambasted Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chuck Hagel, US defence secretary, for telling the forum of Asian defence ministers that China was using intimidation to assert its territorial claims.

"The speeches by Mr Abe and Mr Hagel gave me the impression that they co-ordinated with each other, they supported each other, they encouraged each other and they took the advantage of speaking first . . . and staged provocative actions and challenges against China,” said Gen Wang.

Mr Hagel on Saturday said China was undermining? its claims that the South China Sea was a “sea of peace, friendship and co-operation” by using coercive tactics, adding that the US would “not look the other way when fundamental principles of the international order are being challenged”.

On Friday, Mr Abe said Japan would give more support to southeast Asian nations that are facing Chinese pressure.

As for Japan, China had one word: "fascist."

In the face of mounting efforts by the US and Japan to shore up or build new security relationships in Asia, Gen Wang said China opposed both the practice of building military alliances and “attempts by any country to dominate regional affairs”. In a jab at Japan’s wartime history, Gen Wang said China would “never allow fascism . . . to stake a comeback”.

In the meantime, with Russia expanding geographically, China is doing the same, and in the process steamrolling over Vietnamese objections.

This year’s event became more heated because of the escalating disputes in the South China Sea and East China Sea. China is embroiled in maritime disputes around the region, including with Manila and Tokyo. Scores of Chinese and Vietnamese ships are also involved in a stand-off near the disputed Paracel Islands after China started drilling for oil there in early May.

Gen Wang said China did not take provocative actions, but was being forced to respond to such actions from other countries. But when asked what Vietnam had done to trigger the decision to move the oil rig to disputed waters, sparking the worst crisis in China-Vietnam relations in years, the general did not respond.

While Shangri-La is designed to tackle a range of Asia-Pacific security issues, the focus has, in recent years, shifted squarely to China, with most of the participants this year asking China to explain its policies and actions.

Finally, Russia also chimed in:

Some experts questioned whether a new Cold War was emerging in Asia. Anatoly Antonov, Russia’s deputy defence secretary, took exception to comments by Mr Hagel that the US was the only power that could lead in the Asia-Pacific region. “Why does the US have to lead? To lead what?”

Based on his recent remarks at West Point, even Obama is not quite sure of the answer to that.

Not quite.  The reason to acquire territories is to tax productive assets.  It is easier to collect those taxes if they are owned and operated by US citizens.

No, they were forced out by the dozens. Something's coming.

Next, they'll get rid of the enlisted that are US citizens, to make room for the illegals:

ref; the "competing claims". the UN said nations can have 200mile territorial waters. Vietnam is a nation. Vietnam has a 200mile territorial water. China is stealing Vietnam's oil. there's no "competing claim". No's body is competing about anything; this is a perfect example of thought management. It's called stealing; not "competing claims". Does China have a "claim" on Vietnam's territory? No. They do not. Then how can there be a competing claim? Every night on TV; the nice man tells you "the dispute over China's oil rig, contnues". there's no dispute. there's nothing to dispute. There's a question to be answered; are we now China Incorporated's Bitch Boy; or not; but there's no dispute.

Nice try SAT, but facts are meaningless (as we see with BLS reports and the economy and stock markets)......"International Law" also pretty meaningless these dayss.

"Might makes Right," is the Rule.

However, I doubt China will do much since their Gubmint officials would not risk losing their 'secret' McManions in Cali, Australia, etc. as well as have offspring in overseass universities driving BMWs and living the high life out of the Chinese' public eye.  Just my guess.

There is nothing illegal about having an floating oil rig in International waters like the chinese currently have.  Until they start drilling, and have not got permission.

Teritorial waters are 12 miles.  EEZ are the resources below the seafloor up to 200 miles.

The dispute is exactly how you classify the Parcel Islands of China.  Chinas way the rig is safely in their waters, most other ways it is not.

We tried to steal it in the '60's and '70's. Didn't work out so well then, and the Vietnamese kicked the Chinese out soon after.

Japanese occupies the disputed Diaoyu/Senkaku Island and China is the bad guy. China occupies the disputed Paracel Island and surprise, China is the bad guy. You cant have it both ways. The oil rig is set at a distance of 180 nautical miles from Hainan Island and the much closer Paracel Island. So how is that not the same as th 200 nautical miles claimed by Vietnam ? To be fair, it is in disputed area.

The claim that China upsets the balance by setting up a rig there. Well, wait just a minute. Vietnam has teamed up with Exxon and declared those to be its oil block. So Vietnam started the grabbing of the potential oil.

Truth is so inconvenient sometimes.

Are you watching Chinese news?  The Senkaku Islands have been a Japanese territory.  A Japanese family had owned it for some time.Tokyo bought the islands from the family and nationlized them.  So, the "dispute" exists only because China now says they own the islands and keeps sending boats and airplanes in the area.

As for the dispute with Vietnam, why do you think "China occupies the DISPUTED Paracel Island" is OK?  Is it because China is the one doing occupying?

I think these thing should be settled in the International Court as Vietnam and Japan are suggesting, but China is ignoring their suggestions because I guess it knows its claims won't stand.

'An Officer Corps That Can’t Score How military careerism breeds habits of defeat'

"The most curious thing about our four defeats in Fourth Generation War—Lebanon, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan—is the utter silence in the American officer corps. Defeat in Vietnam bred a generation of military reformers, men such as Col. John Boyd USAF, Col. Mike Wyly USMC, and Col. Huba Wass de Czege USA, each of whom led a major effort to reorient his service. Today, the landscape is barren. Not a military voice is heard calling for thoughtful, substantive change. Just more money, please.

Such a moral and intellectual collapse of the officer corps is one of the worst disasters that can afflict a military because it means it cannot adapt to new realities. It is on its way to history’s wastebasket. The situation brings to mind an anecdote an Air Force friend, now a military historian, liked to tell some years ago. Every military, he said, occasionally craps in its own mess kit. The Prussians did it in 1806, after which they designed and put into service a much improved new model messkit, through the Scharnhorst military reforms. The French did it in 1870, after which they took down from the shelf an old-model messkit—the mass, draft army of the First Republic—and put it back in service. The Japanese did it in 1945, after which they threw their mess kit away, swearing they would never eat again. And we did it in Korea, in Vietnam, and now in four new wars. So far, we’ve had the only military that’s just kept on eating."

Ukraine

and now the Pivot to Asia, where hopefully we can bring Peace, Freedom and Democracy to the various Asian nations with competing claims over rocks in the South China Sea or is it the Western American Sea ?/sarc

The US has sacrificed, hundreds of thousands of American lives to fertilized European, Middle Eastern and Asian soils. And now we can't wait to commit more cannon fodder to uphold the "territorial" claims of our "Asian" allies ?

For those who believe our "Asian allies" have justifiable claims to those rocks, I humbly suggest they read the history concerning ownership of those rocks.

Those rocks existed long before there was a UN, long before the Law of the Sea convention etc etc and long before those Asian nations achieved independence from their Colonial masters.

Take a moment to reflect before we keep WASTING American lives as if they have NO value.

And I have no recollection of 1 SINGLE INSTANCE where ANY "ASIAN ALLY" has ever stepped forward in support or defence of the US with the exception of Australia and New Zealand.

Government is a weapon and its use is motivated by beliefs. The victims of government are the non-believers of those beliefs.

The believers are always the intended benefactors - whether it's a religion, the military, banking, corporatism, environmentalism, capitalism, unionism, luddism or any other of a seemingly endless list of beliefs.

The only ones who don't want to benefit from government are those who want to get rid of it, and they are a very small minority.

Actually the Mafia did a much better job keeping the community safe and protecting business than any government bureaucrat. The pre 1970s mafia, not the drugged up one competing with the black mafia financed by the Jews.

In Cleveland the Mafia protected businesses and kept the ghetto expansion at bay. It was only once it was gone that people realized the role it played. Once the mafia was destroyed in the 1970s it set the stage for the massive ghetto expansion and absolute destuction of every first and second ring suburb. Thousands of businesses went out, crime escalated, and the neighborhoods were no longer safe.

If you were a kid walking home late for supper, Sal would tell Johnny to go get his car and take you home. There was no fear that Johnny was going to kill you, kidnap you, etc. The Mafia most people see is the bullshit put out by Hollywood. And who produces that? Once the Italian mob was put out a different Mafia took control. One far greedier and guilty of far worse crimes.

I'd take the mafia over any three letter government bureau any day. Mafia "organized crime" is nothing compared to what the US government and the true criminals running Wall Street do every day. I've also never been treated better than I have when I've gone to a Mafia dining establishment.

that the MAIN need for a "mafia" is to offer "protection" against other "mafias".

and all these "mafias" are just organised groupings of men intent on fucking shit up.

mebbe the "mafioso-men" can just find a giant arena to work on their cultural evolution, and leave the rest of us out of it. . .

history proves it - the endless story of greed, war lust, invasion, destruction.

The corporations you equate with capitalism would fail under any true free market system. You really think the massive bullshit built by Wall Street actually makes money? It is all a scam.

Monsanto can only exist under protection from the government and by the Wall Street financiers.

GE got to cut corners on the nuclear reactors because of government ties. Boeing made a substandard plane and their stock rockets because they are protected by activist investors.

Capitalism allows change for the better. If people want clean business, then dirty business fails. The most poluted places on earth are run by the communists and socialists. Take a look at China.

If you really want to find the root of all evil, look at the Federal Reserve and the people that run the financial system.

All that's needed to overcome "benign" capitalism is effective marketing and ignorance.

Either capitalism is a weak force, or marketing and ignorance are stronger forces.

And let's face it, people don't want "clean" anything; they want stuff. We get the stuff, China gets the dirt - and paper money.

Win-Win?

George Bush was certainly a complete idiot; he couldn't even get a sentence out of his mouth that actually made sense and was prone to embarrasing public behavior, and he got elected twice. In the history of the intelligence or lack thereof of American Presidents he and his father are ranked the lowest on the bell curve. I don't know where Obama lies, but I do know that the quality of our presidents has been decreasing for some time - certainly since Lyndon Johnson's administration. I doubt it makes much difference at this point whom we elect, as it is just a show for the sheep, and the office of President of the United States a ceremonial title.

If you go back far enough on just about anyone's family tree you will find someone of historical significance, and often not a pleasant person. I, like Brook Shields, can trace my family tree back to Pope Alexander VI, or Rodrigo Borgia, through a son of Lucrezia by the Duke de Este. After 500 years there are a lot of us. George Washington was a descendent of Alfred the Great.

"When a candidate for public office faces the voters he does not face men of
sense; he faces a mob of men whose chief distinguishing mark is the fact that
they are quite incapable of weighing ideas, or even of comprehending any save
the most elemental — men whose whole thinking is done in terms of emotion, and whose dominant emotion is dread of what they cannot understand.  So confronted, the candidate must either bark with the pack or be lost...  All the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre — the man who can most adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum. The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men.  As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people.  We move toward a lofty ideal.  On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." -- H.L. Excellent statement.  The point you make is exactly why capitalism is the only system that can possibly work for humanity.  It is the only system that even acknowledges greed in our species.  Any other system does not account for greed and so is vulnerable to it.  Take any authoritarian system, put a greedy bastard at the top, and see what happens.

Crony capitalism is a form of authoritarianism.  Obviously if those at the top can control who gets contracts and work it is not a free system, hence, authoritarian.

The catalyst for war has not been diminished as many people have hoped it would once the world matured. National pride, political agendas, religious and ethnic hatreds are some of the biggest roadblocks to world peace. Often we seem to forget as we look back to World War II and past a dozen "lesser Conflicts" that peace has been the exception rather then the rule for hundreds and thousands of years.

The true reality is that across the world few mothers want to see their children killed and most farmers want to be left along to raise their crops and earn a living. More on the subject of war as a solution to conflict in the article below.
