Saudi Arabia Reveals Surge In MERS Deaths: One Third Of Infected Patients Die
On April 21, after Saudi King Abdullah al Rabeeah told a news conference he had no idea why the Middle East Respiratory-Coronavirus, or MERS, was surging and leading to hundreds of death, Saudi Arabia fired its health minister. "Surprisingly" this scapegoating did nothing to resolve the problem and overnight Reuters reported that yet another Saudi health official had lost his job: "Saudi Arabia has sacked Deputy Health Minister Ziad Memish who has been criticized by some international scientists over his handling of the deadly MERS virus that has infected 575 people in the kingdom and spread around the world. Memish was a key figure in Saudi Arabia's efforts to contain the spread of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), a virus that causes coughing, fever and sometimes fatal pneumonia."
"Acting Health Minister Adel Fakieh has issued a decision today to relieve Deputy Health Minister Doctor Ziad Memish from his position," said a statement posted on the ministry's website in Arabic on Monday. It did not elaborate.
Memish was criticized by international scientists interviewed for a Reuters Special Report last month for what they saw as a reluctance to collaborate with some specialist laboratories around the world offering to help investigate the possible source of MERS and explore how it spreads.
Amusingly, now that the horse, er virus, has left the stable, all the experts are coming to the fore and demanding to know why the full severity of the problem wasn't revealed previously (oddly comparable to the Fukushima disaster).
Experts say the rising number of infections and deaths could have been stopped well within the two years since MERS first emerged - and would have been if Saudi authorities had been more open to outside help offered by specialist teams around the world with the technology, know-how and will to conduct scientific studies.
Ironic, because had Saudi Arabia done just that, the same experts would be blaming the nation for inciting panic and leading to a self-imposed quarantine until the problem was solved.
This latest sacking also came at a time when conventional wisdom held that 190 people in Saudi Arabia had been killed since the disease was identified.
So now that all the scapegoats have been terminated, it is time for Saudi Arabia to pull a GM (where so far the new/old CEO is still in her position), and reveal just how serious the problem truly is. Moments ago AP reported that according to the latest Saudi data a whopping 282 deaths have been confirmed as a result of 688 infections: a fatality rate of 40%!
Circa says that Saudi Arabia's Health Ministry reported on June 3 that "after reviewing its records, it discovered 113 confirmed cases of MERS not previously included in nationwide totals. The discovery brings the country's total cases to 688; the death toll was raised to 282 from 190."
It just "discovered" that today? Was the previous number of fatalities calculated using a wrong ISM seasonal adjustment factor?
So now that the true severity of the problem has been disclosed (and one wonders how many more deaths will be "discovered"), it begs the question what will happen to all those other countries were MERS has been reported:
Cases have been reported in Egypt, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Tunisia. Countries in Europe and Asia also reported cases among travelers to the Middle East and people who have had contact with such travelers. The virus was identified in Sept. 2012 and has no cure or vaccine.
Having run out of human scapegoats, Saudi is resorting to a new target to carry the blame: camels.
A team of researchers in the U.S. and Saudi Arabia on April 29 said that the recent MERS outbreak can be traced back to camels. It's unclear how humans contracted the virus from camels, but the animals' meat and milk could have done it, researchers say.
So on the off chances readers have been drinking Saudi camel milk, here are your options:
In June 2013, researchers published findings that MERS spreads during dialysis treatments, in intensive care units, and when a patient is transferred between facilities. While they were able to determine that its incubation period is 5.2 days, they couldn't determine how it spreads.
Ribavirin and interferon, two antivirals used to protect monkeys from MERS, showed promising signs that they could help humans, according to a study published in the journal Nature in Sept. 2013. Researchers said the health of three rhesus monkeys with the virus improved after taking the drugs.
We await for the Wall Street experts to explain how this is bullish for all stocks, not just makers of ribavirin and interferon.
And speaking of countries that have yet to "review their records", whatever happened to China's bird flu epidemic, or has that too been successfully swept under the carpet for the time being?

This is like SARS virus, racially specific viruses that have been engineered in laboratories. SARS targets Asians and MERS those of Arabic descent. Swine flu of course was designed for the American public.
Camel flu gonna get ya!
The dangers of medicinal use of the urine of virgin camels?
Virgin my ass! Have you seen those Camel buttholes???
Soon people are going to learn about the abstract concept of exponential growth in a very concrete way.
The herd needs to be culled and the Middle East is as good a place as any!
Problem is 27 flights full of people leave every day.
You watch, they won't quarantine a damn thing, and France will let them in.
New York won't want to shut down flights because it will hurt business.
California won't want to shut down flights because it will hurt tourism.
Next pandemic will be spread to the world in the cabin of an airliner.
Yep... via the passengers on airliners we so properly screen for ...
Oh, neverthefuck mind...
Kudos!
alla akbar.
There have already been confirmed cases in the US and a bunch of hospital personal in, I believe, Florida were exposed, one of whom came down sick. Besides that, the first time the guy showed up in their emergency room they sent him home. There was also a case in another state, I believe. Stock up on groceries in case you have to hunker down and shelter in place.

Hey it works for vampires ;)
But won't all the radiation from Fukashima kill all the SARS, MERS, AIDS, HPV, GMC, IMF, NSA, CIA, KGB, CNBC, DMV, and XYZ viruses!!??
Just make every plane fly around there or Chernobyl to get a good healthy dose of cleansing radiation!
/sarc
The biologist in me is sad to tell you that your plan will only help the virus mutate faster. However if you pull a Flight 370 on them infection the rate drops to zero.
Shirley you can't be serial!
But you could be right.
I forgot about the "Andomeda Strain" phenomenon that could well have conjoined its evil trans-dimensional polymorphic and really tricky DNA to MERS, SARS, SEARS, BUBONIC PLAGUE, LYME DISEASE AND WORST OF ALL... POISON IVY!
And it could even spawn "Spawn" along with "Them" and "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" too!
THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!!! THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!!!
AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
How can they be getting sick? I thought they all COVERED themselves from head to toe in that country. Just look at Saudi women, you can't even see their faces.
At some point the hand will eventually touch the mouth. Just as in software and Bitcoin, where there is access there is always a way to exploit it. My money is on the virus being an unseen, microscopic particle on a mission.

There are some imam type scribblings about the handling of sheep and goats in this manner, and the disposition of their byproducts after having been loved, but I'm not aware of camel shagging instructions in the culture. I mean, isnt a camel sort of horse sized?
Reminds me of a joke.
Lonely French Foreign Legion outpost in Middle East. Commander has been without sex for three months. He finally gets so frustrated he asks his Lieutenant who has been there six months what he does to satisfy his urges. The Lieutenant acts stoic - says he thinks of his Wife, prays, and plays Solitaire, then leans in and whispers to the Commander "But Sir, there is always the camel" as he motions to the camel hitched nearby. "That's disgusting man!" bellows the Commander, and he stomps off. However, several weeks go by and he can't take it anymore. At night he grabs a stool, drops his drawers, and starts screwing the camel with wild abandon. The Lieutenant comes around the corner of the tent and stares in shock. "Well don't be shocked, I couldn't take it anymore, and you must have done it since you suggested it!" yells the Commander. The Lieutenant smirks and says "To each his own Sir, most of us get on the camel and ride it to the Harem at the Oasis".
There are so many ways to ride a camel.
Winning!(tm)
" I mean, isnt a camel sort of horse sized?"
They used ladders.
And longer legs than those of horses are more sexxxy
What an easy way to silence "opposition" quietly.

Naw, it's being distributed in those Sanitation stations with the alcohol gel. Why bother spraying when you can put it in plain sight and people willingly slather on the gel...then touch their eyes and mouth.
It's where I would put it if wanting to sneak something into a country or a building or a department.

Because it's now a vector and distribution method. What's the first thing people do when they see one...well Monkey see, monkey do. MERS just happens to be resistant after it's mutation over a year on tour. But the real tiger of the pathogenic branches are MRSA. You get that, it's a coin flip or a lost limb. Doesn't seem to care either what type of animal gets MSRA anymore either because it's cross speices now.

Even has been shown to increase effectiveness of antibiotics as well.

It is hazardous to werewolfes.
Just look at the first confirmed case state side, the non-arabic individual who contracted MERS showed no symptoms of being sick, though he was a carrier of the virus. What'll get ya is the "solution" to the pandemic hype being perpetrated.
So the Fed is on this?
Fed as in CDC, etc. Yeah. They engineer this crap for shits and grins and it winds up killing people.
Try Lyme Disease.
Engineered to be spread by ticks on Plum Island, got loose thorough the fucked up protective barriers, made across the Sound to Ct and Viol-fiucking-a there you have it.
And for those Doubting Thomases out there, try these Medical Experiments On Premature Babies.

SUPPORT involved looking at the different outcomes with different ranges within standard care. The outrage over SUPPORT is total bunk. That said, if these are engineered, they came out of a military lab. No one at the CDC is smart enough to do that.
The CDC farms out lots of work and brings in doctoral students under the aegis of their studies to fuck around with nasty bugs.
Most genetic fiddling occurs in lab strains, even at CDC. While there is a danger in it, it occurs at every significant university in the country. Only the military would have the will to engineer bugs and their capabilities are suspect too.
A lot could be accomplished by manipulating existing parasites to render more people dependent. There's a parasite that jacks with the brains of mice to cause them to be attracted to cats. Lots of humans also go through a bout with thins same brain altering parasite, and there is correlation between having the antibodies or whatever marker for it in one's blood, and being kinda nevrotic to psychiatric. Warmer southern European countries are cat loving countries. They're more banana-republic-y and mañana-ish than more serious northern ones. France is a crazy mix of both. Fuckin' cat parasites man, that's the ticket, to make 47% into 77%.
Thanks for your reassurance. It's good to know that you have brought the vast wealth of your medical education in infectious diseases & epidemiologic studies to this forum. I am comforted. For a second there I thought this could be big news.
Your welcome. On the financial front long treasuries and USD, short gold and guns, these are well established traps for the racist pigs who are going to get some bacon cut off their backs.

Intriguing notion, but given that the Saudi savages are at best bronze age beknighted savages who specialize in nothing save terrorism and hunan right atrocities - if your postulate is true, then this is nothing more than the garbage being taken out.
Coming from a country that sends its death row inmates to Syria to fight while sheiks buy little girls from syria as brides, they deserve alot worse than MERS and, as they say, inshallah, they will get it.
Are there any plans for a BARS virus? Bankster Asshole Respiratory Syndrome?
Insh'Allah
mwahahahaha
they ARE the virus.
we are all virus but some are more than others.
No problem. Obama will open the border to all infected for free healthcare. I'm sure for those who can't afford it he'll provide travel vouchers where drop off locations can be your nearby school where they will also get a free and healthy vegtable sandwich.
Some Saudis are what we might call shut-ins. It'd be easy to miscount unseen women and girls expiring among family.
how about that:
Oh we know... we know.
It's worse, or maybe better.., than you think. The urine is thought to have various therapeutic powers. For a desert animal that's famously ecomical in its use of water, that has to be some potent stuff.
An old beduin told me once they often resorted to drinking camel urine between water
holes.
Some Brahmin hindus drink cow urine as a purification ritual.

In some cases you actually DO know, you're just in denial, or cognitive dissonance, or PC mode about it.

The next pandemic will sweep through the world's populations like a harvester. And at a time when our medical technology is in the best place it has EVER been to deal with something like that, it will fail, miserably. Because there simply isn't enough PROFIT to be had with mundane drugs that treat the boring illnesses. So when a new pandemic strikes, they will have to start from scratch, and they won't have enough time.
Secondary infection is what kills most folks who get these types of illnesses, and most of the antibiotics we HAVE are woefully inadequate because of resistance. And the drug companies don't find that creating NEW antibiotics to be profitable, so they haven't been working very hard on that issue.
They are too busy creating magic pills to help folks like Blankfein get and maintain a 'chubby'...THAT'S where the money is today.
There will be profits, remember the swine flu BS?
I always said this is how the population would be halved.
Not with war, but with pestilence, natural or otherwise...
FIRST of all no anti-biotic works on a virus.
SECOND of all, colloidal silver has anti-viral and anti-biotic properties. It's not guarantee but it's something we can do.
THIRD, don't be fooled. Too many people have their hands in the bio-weapons pie. It's not just countries but outsourced labs they employ, who can both fuck up and leak (deliberately). Any stupid mistake and before you know it, it's The Stand but rather than being government it could be a division of some big pharma corporation.
It could even be Monsanto. A viral vector which attacks every immune system for every species is actually how they insert gene sequences because they aren't clever.
If they were clever they'd invent their own method. Instead they just hijacked a virus because nature did the work for them. Nature likes to pack an extra surprise for unassuming but arrogant humans.
I said 'secondary infections'...the virus itself isn't what kills you, it's the secondary bacterial infections that usually do it after the virus softens you up.
And how will folks who can't get hold of antibiotics get hold of colloidal silver? How many would even know what it IS, or how to use it?
You're right, it COULD be something 'engineered'. But it can just as easily be something that Nature throws at us. By the time it takes hold, it won't matter anyway.
There's lots of videos showing how to make colloidal silver. Can be done with silver wires & a 9V battery. I'm sure it wouldn't be much different to use a silver maple also .9999 pure or to melt/bash it into a thinner shape to better use as a terminal. It's so easy even a retard could do it: attach to battery, put in cup of water. That simple.
The livestock has been fed antibiotics to the point where the virus has become resistent and humans who consumed the doped meat need stronger and stronger antibiotics.
Big Pharma is busy selling tons and tons of the meds to commercial growers. The quantities are cheap compared to the potential loss of livestock due to illness.
The whole system is broken by guys who sell their souls to make a buck.
The antibiotics fed to farm animals affect the bacteria only. Some bacteria have innate natural, resistance to certain antibiotics due to the genetics of the species. Viruses aren't affected but can gain resistance to antivirals. Tumors can become resistant to cancer therapies. Resistance is a natural process when exposed to a challenge. It's also a great cash flow for the unscrupulous who exploit these facts and claim there are no alternatives.
Just FYI ;-)

MERS fraudclosures have killed way more than that in USA. Stress, heart attacks. Murder. Suicides.
War or pestilence will ruin your day..
Between this, Fuku, and the evil Russians..
I really do miss the days that cigarette smoking and a bad sunburn were the only major concerns.
They are not going to be very forthcoming with the accurate numbers as it will show they are screwing up....they are to proud for that...and they still want to fly around the world....when the world quarentines them..then its over for them..

We need a travel ban for saudi camels
shouldn't they ban all human traffic in and out of the kingdom?
We are clearly overdue for pandemic... Maybe culling the herd of a billion or so might not be all that bad...
can we limit it to the FSA?
Considering that the FSA already demonstrates gross incompetence coupled with a lack of reapnsibility? It will strike the FSA based on their lifestyle choices and hygiene (and lack thereof).
Fuck the FSA
Duck... duck... goose. Tag. You've been culled.
Edit: I get it that mother earth has her own methods and pace, I get it that we are pretty fucked up as a culture and will reap what we sow. But when you look for a good culling, don't be surprised when your number is the one that is up.
I just had a freind "culled."
Yes... that's the risk....
Our discussion of the odds of our individual survival will have zero impact on the outcome...
And I don't think it will turn out like it did in The Stand....
Ever see this?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eym4PwHmUvI ("After Armageddon," a History Channel exploration of the effects of a global pandemic)
For TV bullshit - I actually thought it was pretty good. They didn't get into the reactor issue - but they did a pretty good job of illustrating how a pandemic that reaches a certain severity/size can pass a tipping point for society that would be very difficult to recover from.
Very reminiscent of a "One Second After" situation generally speaking.
On a long enough t.... Oh, nevermind.
As long as the folks running the world's nuclear reactors keep showing up for work. . .
Yeah, but I think we got that one covered...
Speaking of The Stand, that was one side-effect of depopulation that King missed completely...
At least Damnation Alley got the flesh eating cockroaches correct
Thinking this as well, if the pandemic was more targeted to those on my daily commute that would be helpful. Seriously though this sounds like the latest Fed scheme to create jobs.
Meh. Wake me up when the DT breaks 100k...
Is it so difficult to believe that Saudi Arabia is less transparent than China when it comes to reporting infectious diseases?
What is more troublesome is the summer migration patterns of Sauds.
Moreover, none of the surrounding regimes are any better.
doesn't Saud air-migration cause the rest of the skies to be cleared (at least over NYC / USA?)?
I hear September's a preferred month.
Show me a transparent government and I'll eat my hat.

A mers vaccine !!!!!!
Vaccination strategies for coronaviruses have involved live attenuated virus, recombinant viruses, non-replicative virus-like particles expressing coronavirus proteins or DNA plasmids expressing coronavirus genes.
None of these strategies has progressed to an approved human coronavirus vaccine in the ten years since SARS-CoV emerged.
Here we describe a novel method for generating MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV full-length spike nanoparticles, which in combination with adjuvants are able to produce high titer antibodies in mice.

Hi Willy,
OT. Did the clover work? Did you get bees in your garden? I had a lot again this year, though fewer than last year.
Great minds think alike! Ha
Just sent you a contact request to advise. It hasn't bloomed yet, but it's up about 6" & lovely. Very delicate, unlike common white clover. I decided to place random patches around the vege garden for pollination. From that link you posted the bloom looks spectacular.
I was wondering if you'd ever used it as a cover crop for fixing nitrogen? My sibling used buckwheat once & cursed it like I am johnson grass (my personal kudzu) right now. Ugh.
Most excellent!
Have a nice Hajj!
The Saudi Ambassador to the UN has just finished giving a speech, and walks out into the lobby where he meets the US pResident. They shake hands and as they walk the Saudi says, "You know, I have just one question about what I have seen in America."
The pResident says "Well your Excellency, anything I can do to help, I will do."
The Saudi whispers "My son watches this show 'Star Trek' and in it there are Russians, Blacks, and Asians, but never any Arabs. He is very upset. He doesn't understand why there are never any Arabs in Star Trek."
The pResident laughs and leans toward the Saudi, and whispers back, "It's because it takes place in the future...."
I'm sure it was implied to be the first Star Trek...but Doctor Bashir was middle eastern and he was a doctor on DS9.
A one-third death rate is damned scary! And like another poster said, half their population are "shut-ins"...we have NO way to know what the female death rate is. Now how long before it shows up in Europe, the US? Quite the little world travelers, these Saudis are. For all practical purposes, a one-third death rate is a slate-wiper for us as a civilization. Does anyone REALLY believe that our current crop of pharmaceutical industries would be able to gear-up to produce a 'cure'? It would not be profitable, as the world would not stand for that during an actual pandemic. But with the current mindset, which company would have the stones to tell their shareholders to bugger off and do the right thing? Eventually they would, of course, but the time lost would be fatal to the success of their efforts.
It may seem like a survivable hit if you just look at it mathematically...you still have 2/3's that DON'T die. But it is more than just numbers. Our society is tethered together pretty loosely as it is, and the ropes are weak and rotted. Taking 1/3 out of the equation would cause the whole thing to collapse overnight.
So while we would probably survive biologically, as a species, we'd be sent ALL the way back to square one socially and culturally. And just like others in the past, we'd lose all our technological know-how long before we recovered enough to pick it up where we left off. And those who survive, and try to preserve all the knowledge, will in time see it all burnt to the ground by barbarians just like our ancestors had to watch the library at Alexandria burn, and how the Romans had to watch as the hordes destroyed all their works and plunged Europe into centuries of chaos. How many of man's great creations and ideas have been lost to history over the past thousands of years? THEY never thought it could happen to them either.
Sorry, I'm feeling philosophical. Stories like this always do that to me. Seriously, a pandemic illness, especially a respiratory one, is among the top three most likely things to cut us off at the knees within days, and one of the most likely to actually HAPPEN. All the other 'theories of collapse' are interesting to think on, but are under our control on some level. That's why you always see folks arguing about how to fix them, because they ARE fixable. But disease is NOT under our total control, it is its OWN life-form, with its OWN will to survive. What little control we DO have with our pharmaceutical know-how, we have relinquished in the interests of profits. And we have SEEN many such pandemics during our existence, many civilizations just wiped out overnight historically. This shit CAN and DOES happen.
To go out in a blast of nukes seems better in a way...we go out with a bang, in a fireball of our own making. It's quick and grand. To be taken out by disease and die drowning in our own snot because we've allowed ourselves to be BEATEN by a more successful life-form just seems so sad and pathetic.
The Internet itself doesn't get sick from this kind of virus.
Nor do the machines just stop working.
Some machines will be in bad condition from poor maintenance if left too long.
Many can run on their own for a long time or can sit still without a problem
So much has been recorded on paper & encoded directly into the structure of a machine, operation of a robot, so much is documented in video, audio & manuals, no way civilization would collapse UNLESS 60 to 90% were wiped out.
It wouldn't be people unable to figure out the work of their ancestors: it would be so few people no amount of work could restart it all.
As for a "more successful" life-form don't be naive.
MERS/SARS/coronavirus reeks with such high mortality of being a leaked/tested bio-weapon.
True, many machines CAN remain idle and still be functional. But not for very long, except in rare circumstances. And none of those machines exists in a vacuum...they all depend on still OTHER systems that are also under stress.
As to the availability of video, manuals, etc...it is very likely that those things will end up stashed in some room somewhere, and be eventually discovered by someone who has no idea what they are, can't read them, or doesn't give a shit. That's how these things have happened historically. Unless the knowledge has an immediate use in the post-collapse world, it is unlikely that the folks struggling to survive will make the effort to protect it.
And, high mortality is irrelevant in deciding this virus was engineered. Nature has provided plenty of nasty shit that has outdone ANY of the Frankensteins working for the governments of the world. Mankind's visual-field is much too narrow, and this is why I have a general issue with conspiracy theories, as I've posted in the past.
Given the dumbed-down nature of videos these days no reading is required. You see how parts are tested or put together & you copy what you see.
"Nature has provided plenty of nasty shit that has outdone ANY of the Frankensteins working for the governments of the world."
Not lately. Humans do this more frequently than nature does. Nature's incentive is to get parasites to let the host live so they can find other hosts & sustain their own existence. That's evolution at work.
This is not a conspiracy theory, it's conspiracy fact proven many times over, it was even shown in an anthrax documentary on CBC. There's a large number of private labs contracted out to do this work & they fuck up just like any other place of business can.
The Black Death killed off 1/3 of the population of Medieval Europe, but they got the Renaissance out of it. I suspect mortality rates would go higher as medical services collapsed. How many respirators are there in this country?
You need a certain amount of people to keep the whole thing running. Even mechanized systems require significant numbers of maintenance folks. Once you go below that number, the systems start to fail before you can keep them up.
And it's not just those folks...they also need a support framework that will be in the process of falling apart, and so on, and so on...
I greatly fear they will neglect to put the nuclear power plants to bed before too many people get sick.
A one third reduction in the native European popuation is baked into their demographics. Russia is a worse case, as is China. The replacement population breeds s little more prolifically. The, ah, "shut-ins" among them have a very important role to play in spreading the mental virus called Islam.
Yes, but 60% of those admitted to Saudi hospitals for appendicitis also died....
Bullish as the HFTs would be unlikely to be infected. Stock markets without retail interference could go straight up in the silence that engulfs the world during the Stand. Just need to make sure they are attached to the part of the electric grid run by solar or wind.
more the death, cheaper oil i guess...

Joe Camel: Quit picking on us camels. First, it is cigarettes, now it is MERS. This stuff is getting me spitting mad. Lay off!
Well, you see, we actually missed all the women who died because they aren't officially people here in Saudi Arabia. Then we realized that we might be criticized for this and we are now revising our death totals to reflect male deaths as well as the deaths of other so-called human beings.
for a brief moment, hope, wish, I thought this might be related to MERS Corp....one can only hope. hope and change, sounds familiar. have a nice day!
That means there were 1,376 cases and 564 deaths.

They built a wall, they will be OK. Thats why they are Gods chosen.
Who do you think created it?
A team of researchers in the U.S. and Saudi Arabia on April 29 said that the recent MERS outbreak can be traced back to camels. It's unclear how humans contracted the virus from camels,
Right..... but i guess it gets very lonely out in the desert at night.
