3 "X-Class" Solar Flares Hit Earth; Disrupt Flights, Communications
The sun has had three major "X-Class" solar flares on its surface in the past two days that have affected communications on Earth and could send a shockwave through Earth this Friday (the 13th), according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As ABC reports, the “solar events” caused brief blackouts in high frequency communications when they struck, twice on Tuesday morning and once this morning.
As ABC notes,
ABC US News | ABC Celebrity News
And a close-up of the solar flares...
One of the flares created a “coronal mass ejection” that actually could come into contact with Earth on Friday, according to NOAA. The ejection is essentially a huge cloud of plasma that could hit the Earth and cause a shock wave, affecting communications systems. If an ejection were to hit Earth on Friday, scientists expect it would only cause a minor geo-magnetic storm, according to NOAA.
So, World Cup is on... and its Friday 13th (and it's a full moon)... stay home!

Smoke 'em if you got 'em.
Who cares about fuken solar flarez?
BUY BITCOIN!!
Is this why stock charts.com blew up Tuesday?
Boehner will be outside with the iodine and baby oil for a nice orange flash tan.
...and then he will cry orange tears.
... I was going to go fishing late ... being we are almost to the solstice and it's a full moon ... and now I have to watch aurora ... or not ...

Regards,

the sun is black, and hollow and cold.
without the focusing effect of our atmosphere it would only be an extreme magnetic event,
heating the earths iron core through cosmic induction and the planets acting as capacitors
with the vacuum of space the dielectric insulator between the conductants.
Blame climate change for the flares...
That would be Global Warming, charlatans do not get the priviledge of renaming their scam when it suits them...
May your Bitcoins meet a plasma stream directed earthwards from a solar coronal mass ejection... and live to talk about it.
What's it gonna do to our gold? Should I be worried?
If it fries all the sensitive equipment used to verify that your gold is real, it will make your gold practically useless since no one will except it.
Eagles...
This is probably related to the story reported on FOX about planes disappearing off radar in several European countries for 25 minutes.
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2014/06/12/flights-briefly-vanish-from-air-...
Maybe, but the story was on Faux so there's a good chance it was made up to look like Obama did it.
Unthinking, knee jerk partisanship is just as unattractive on the left as it is the right, you know?
Janet does. Don't tell her or she'll reverse the tapering at this month's meeting. God is no excuse for sub 4.0% growth.
This is totally bullshit hyped up reporting by NASA. We've had many more severe X class hit the earth more directly. More of the HYPE the shit up to keep the populous in fear. Fucking asswipes. This ain't shit. Show me a direct hit of X-3 through X-7 class flare, directed to earth before I get worried about earthbound effects. The Carrington event of 1859 was thought, but not known, to be of an X8 through X10 or more.
Here are the last 4 reports from Solar Influences Data analysis Center which watches the Sun's activity closely, especially solar flares.

Two faint but wide CMEs were observed on June 10.
The halo CME first seen in the SOHO LASCO C2 field of view at 14:36 UT had angular width of about 270 degrees. The bulk of the CME mass was directed northward from the Sun-Earth line. Currently available data give no indications about possible on disc signatures of the CME. We do not expect this CME to arrive at the Earth.
The second, faint partial halo CME first seen in the SOHO LASCO C2 field of view at 18:00 UT had angular width of about 180 degrees. The bulk of the CME mass was directed north-east from the Sun-Earth line. From the currently available data it seems that the CME was associated with the flare at E170 as seen from the Earth, and will therefore not arrive at the Earth.

The X1.0 flare peaking at 09:06 UT was reported this morning, June 11. The flare originated from the Catania sunspot group 81 (NOAA AR 2087) presently situated close to the east solar limb. From the currently available data it seems that the associated CME was rather narrow. Details will be reported once the coronagraph data become available.

The impulsive X2.2 flare peaking at 11:44 UT and originating from NOAA AR 2087 situated close to the east solar limb was reported today. The flare was accompanied with narrow CME (angular width of about 70 degrees) which will not arrive at the Earth.
The same NOAA AR 2087 was also source of the long duration X1.5 flare which peaked at 12:52 UT and was associated with coronal dimmings, an EIT wave and a full halo CME. The CME was first seen in the SOHO LASCO C2 field of view at 13:25 UT and had a projected plane of the sky speed of about 1050 km/s. The majority of the CME mass was ejected eastward of the Sun-Earth line. However, the glancing blow associated with this CME can be expected at the Earth in the morning of June 13.

Other than satellite disruptions, M class flairs have shown little effect to earth other than satellite disruptions for a short time.
And ya, I'm going to believe NASA with it's pro global warming stance. Gee, the us. GOV would never lie to you. NASA is an institution without a reason for being anymore so what would they say to continue funding?
So I shouldn't head to the Family Freedom Farm?
See up thread for my link.
I am going fishing tomorrow night because of the full moon/late sunset ... and I don't see shit on the Aurora forecast. This is the stuff that makes lights in the northern sky happen.
Going fishing anyway, but I don't expect lights.

A Carrington event today could shut down electrical grids and communications.
Back in 1859 it knocked out telegraph systems and shocked some telegraph operators. Back then most people had outhouses, kerosene lamps, and lived on a farm.
"In June 2013, a joint venture from researchers at Lloyd's of London and Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER) in the United States used data from the Carrington Event to estimate the current cost of a similar event to the world economy at $2.6 trillion (£1.67tr)."
That should pop the current housing, derivatives, margin debt, FED fueled bubble quite well.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_storm_of_1859
It would pop everything. Cost estimate my ass. It would send us to the dark ages with 4 days.
Actually, it would not pop everything. Only those things grid related or connected with wires longer than 2 meters or so (could be one meter but who knows). A Solar Flare would only induce high voltage in long lines through its E 1 wave, unlike a High altitude EMP which induces E 1, E 2 and E 3 waves.
The physics are available to those who seek but basically, the grid would be down but not non grid and personal generators, cars, ect which would still have functionality. hence, a gas station who could get/has a generaor could still pump fuel as his pumps might still work. Everone else, ect... Read more on the differences should you dis agree.
Solar Flare of high X magnitude would be a bitch but not a nation/world killer
ts;dl Solar events only emit E-1 waves, which are too long to harm integrated circuits wheras, HA EMP emts E-1 and E-2 and E-3 waves which are much shorter and will damage integrated circuits. Look it up. Physics Beeotichs.
Who the fuck gave you an angry downtwinkle for that? Aren't there other internet forums more welcoming to those who hate science, math, and/or facts? (Although, having said that, I am less sanguine than you that much would, could, or might continue as before if the grid actually went down on account of a truly cataclysmic solar event.)
The social/political effects of such an event make it a killer not the event itself. Just reconfiguring JIT systems to work with less computerization and resetting the welfare systems to paper would lead to massive riots.. But technically +1
The inability to pump water or produce food in factories would be the killer. No food/water = mass riots = death = govt jack boots everywhere = more death.
"Back then most people had outhouses, kerosene lamps, and lived on a farm."
Another Carrington Event and everybody is going to wish they had outhouses, kerosene lamps and lived on a farm.
Yes - analysed by some serious people. The collateral effects could be disasterous. Huge voltages are induced in long power lines due to jello wobbles in the geomagnetic field. Fried transformers can take a year to replace and global capacity could not make up for a major loss of transformers. Nuclear power plants have emergency back up power for a couple of weeks typically. One collateral effect could easily be multiple Fukushima-type events.
FWIW, Clif High (of web-bot fame) has been forecasting a downturn for weeks ... that would start June 13th. Hmm ....
Since this was a back side event
.....somebody needs to run with this
Looks like the flare already took out the ABC link.
So should i not renew my internet service?
smokesignals.com
Renew. Just don't send a check.
“coronal mass ejection”
facial gone wrong?
And to think that we only expected a pearl necklace.
the sun popping a zit
“coronal mass ejection”, is that taxable?
Cool hopefully 10 and 11 meters will finally be open for god sakes.
SSN is 176 and SFI is 201, if that doesn't get them going, nothing will.
Some guy a long time ago told me that solar cycle 19 and 21 were so bad ass because of all the nuclear tests in the Pacific.
I'll be tanning in the Hamptons friday, should I up my SPF ?
hide under a hooker
until the event passes...
YOU'RE ALREADY DEAD!
There is no future but what we make.
At the risk of digressing, I have to confess that this remains one of my favorite movies of all time. A tad slow to start, but when the helicopter started chasing Arnie et al., culminating in the tanker sliding sideways into the foundry? Fuck, Man. That was totally Rad!
didn't the Fed do a study correlating CMEs with 'irrational' trading in securities markets?
i guess that's why stocks have been going down the past few days. can't blame it on the weather? blame it on CMEs!!
this should be good for a quarter's worth of excuses about why QE is failing, margins are compressing, weak consumer spending, etc. etc.
The CME will add fuel to the HFT tomorrow, Dow will go up 500 + points! Bullish! :)
Well, lucky for us nothing important that we do is dependent on high-frequency communication.
Indeed. I, myself, am thinking of commemorating Ben's kite and key ditty tomorrow.....without my galoshes....or raincoat....
..and no sunglasses....I live dangerously...
Future headline: Solar Flares Burn Consumer Spending
Krugman's lovin' it. Just think of all the telegraph lines and Morse Code keyers that will have to be replaced.
Serious "infrastructure" problems no doubt and fried satellites too, NASA needs an upgrade!
To QEfinity and beyond!...lol.
Hey, is it just me, or have all the comments for ZH articles prior to the first of this month been wiped out by solar flares?
my search was quick but i can't reject the null
This is not new, and not that exciting. Here's how to watch the sun:

this will totally mess with my solar oven cooking times... darn it.
you will have brand new solar microwave ovens.

Can we please ban sun flares please? How much longer must we endure these violent outbursts? They've been occuring since the dawn of time. Certainly there must be some sort of legislation Barbara the Bolshevek Boxer, Diane Cloven Hooved Pelosi and the Big Eared Warlock In-Chief can pass to protect the citizenry of this fine republic.
Is this anthropogenic solar flares? I think we may need some government spending and research to verify the human causes to such occurrences. Fucking Republicans doin it fo sure.
in response to "Diane Cloven Hooved Pelosi"
I think you are confusing Nancy Cloven Hooved Pelosi with Diane Incubus Feinstein. However, I totally agree that solar flares need to be outlawed. Maybe we should just shut down the sun altogether, and heat the earth's atmosphere with a combination of inexhaustible nuclear energy, coal, and and shale oil. Then we could percisely contol global warming. Wow, I think I'm starting to channel the Incubus or something.
Don't be redickerous. Don't ban it, tax it!
...and we can't find terrorists driving around in the dessert in a 1997 pickup...
Next full moon and Fri 13th will be in 2049.
My life has a purpose...finally.
Somehow I don't think we'll get to see it.
Hey, we all survived the Mayan Long Count in Dec. 2012, so everything else is just a big YAWN, in comparison.
Lemme know when something real happens. Like Free Willie, or Free Enterprise. Get it... "Free Enterprise"?
Burning off the planets atmosphere would silence the chatty classes. For a while.
Check our Suspicious0bserver on youtube. He compiles all the NASA, NOAA etc etc data and presents it in a nice 4 minute video every morning. (the 0bserver is spelled with a zero)
Fer sure dude! We like his show....
The sun is most responsible for our weather. It is an electric universe.
Well if the grid goes down, it's een nice knowing you guys. I'm locked and loaded, hopefully I won't be seeing you in any local FEMA camps.
Shit. I'm flying to Malaysia from China on Friday the 13th and now you tell me there's lots of solar activity. No wonder the flight was cheap. It's been nice knowing you all.
Send us a post card from Diego Garcia.
CNN will surely track your flight for you
Some congressman will deny solar flares exist.
Why do I like you so much?
Whatever it is, its certainly more than just your knock-out avitars.
But they wore them in the seventies, in their youth, along with their platform soles.
Solar flares do exist...and HUMANS are responsible for them. Please send your donations to StopSolarDestabilization.com today...the first 10,000 donors will receive a free Al Gore bobblehead!
Oh no. We're all going to die! Hurry, increase consumption in the police state!
Now on a bit of general research I did over the years. It seems the ancients using astronomy of data points such as star position, the sun and planets figured out there are earth changes every 26,000 years.
The Mayans figured similar things out and solar activity peaked in 2012. We had a run up of the effects of this for what seemed like 20-30 years such as increased volcanism, plate tectonics, polar wander and weather effects. How many people died from this? Please! It is a giant nothing burger in real terms. Solar radiation evolves life. That doesn't mean even in minute event cycle we all become the X-Men either.
My specualtion in 2008 is that we would see extended northern lights effects and polar wander but no end of the world scenarios. That happened. Yawn.... The rundown also seems to be 20-30 years.
Now if man detected a supernova that would effect us, I would say "oh shit, there fucked in 1,200 years!" But of course by then we won't care anyways for a myriad of reasons.
The real concern is getting robbed by bloated global government where growth has stalled but such want to keep eating fine foods, big titty gold digging pussy and nice digs at your expense as you go broke.
A wise man once told me governments create chaos and make the people pay for it. Yep. Sums it all up nicely. We do what we can...
non event so far, routine stuff.
