Norad Admits F-22 Fighter Jets Intercepted 4 Russian Bombers 50 Miles Off California Coast

Tyler Durden's picture

"At the height of the Cold War I do not remember them getting this close," notes a retired Air Force Lt. Gen. as The Washington Free Beacon reports that four Russian strategic bombers triggered U.S. air defense systems while conducting practice bombing runs near Alaska this week, with two of the Tu-95 Bear H aircraft coming within 50 miles of the California coast, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) confirmed Wednesday. Two U.S. Air Force F-22 jets were scrambled and intercepted the bombers over the Aleutians but the remaining two nuclear-capable bombers then flew southeast and entered the U.S. northern air defense zone off the coast of Northern California, before 2 more F-15s were scrambled. As House Armed Services Committee member Connaway ranted, "truth of the matter is we would have squashed either one of those [bombers] like baby seals."

As The Washington Free Beacon explains, Four Russian strategic bombers triggered U.S. air defense systems while conducting practice bombing runs near Alaska this week, with two of the Tu-95 Bear H aircraft coming within 50 miles of the California coast, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) confirmed Wednesday.

Davis said the latest Bear H incursions began Monday around 4:30 p.m. Pacific time when radar detected the four turbo-prop powered bombers approaching the U.S. air defense zone near the far western Aleutian Islands.

Two U.S. Air Force F-22 jets were scrambled and intercepted the bombers over the Aleutians.

After tracking the bombers as they flew eastward, two of the four Bears turned around and headed west toward the Russian Far East. The bombers are believed to be based at the Russian strategic base near Anadyr, Russia.

The remaining two nuclear-capable bombers then flew southeast and around 9:30 P.M. entered the U.S. northern air defense zone off the coast of Northern California.

Two U.S. F-15 jets were deployed and intercepted the bombers as they eventually flew within 50 miles of the coast before turning around and heading west.

A defense official said the four bombers also were supported by two IL-78 aerial refueling tankers that were used for mid-air refueling during the operation this week.

The bomber incursion is the latest Russian nuclear saber-rattling amid stepped up tensions over Moscow’s military annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea.

Rep. Mike Conaway (R., Texas), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, called the Russian flights “intentional provocations.”

“Putin is doing this specifically to try to taunt the U.S. and exercise, at least in the reported world, some sort of saber-rattling, muscle-flexing kind of nonsense,” Conaway said in an interview. “Truth of the matter is we would have squashed either one of those [bombers] like baby seals.”

“It’s a provocation and it’s unnecessary. But it fits in with [Putin’s] macho kind of saber-rattling,” he said, adding that he expects Russia will carry out more of these kinds of incidents in the future.

Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney, a former Alaska commander for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, said he does not remember a case of Russian strategic bombers coming that close to the U.S. coast.

“Again we see the Obama administration through their covert—but overt to Mr. Putin—unilateral disarmament, inviting adventurism by the Russians,” McInerney said in an email.

“At the height of the Cold War I do not remember them getting this close. Mr. Putin had to approve this mission and he is just showing his personal contempt for President Obama right after meeting him in Normandy less than a week ago,” McInerney said.

McInerney said no American president has been treated with such disrespect in U.S. history.

“A sad day indeed and at the same time Mosul and Tikrit [Iraq] fall to radical Islamists after the Obama administration’s failed Iraq policy,” he added. “He snatched defeat from the jaws of victory yet again.”

distance and altitude restrictions were lifted in early 2013... so, short of being able to perform better than a human body can withstand, no, they aren't

the USAF is just going to have to accept that its "spam in a can" days are numbered... Navy too, for that matter... the platforms are being held back by human limits

No, but they do still need tens of hours of maintenance for each flight hour, and the mean time between failures is less than 2 flight hours. Just make sure you're not up in the air that long.

What could possibly go wrong?

See, that's why they waited till they were 50 miles off the coast; the US Planes cannot be in the air for more 40 minutes.

Time to dust off the ME 163 and deploy them on the coast.

they require 10.5 hours per 1 flight hour as of 2009, and the number continues to drop... the original requirement was for 12 hours maint per flight hour, so the req has already been exceeded... it's not a perfect platform but those numbers speak for themselves

well let's think this through... you really think in wartime that they're going to get that amount of maint time... or, realistically, actually need it? it's just a conservative engineering factor

I mean, it's not like we're replacing entire engines after one sortie under military power, like some *cough cough* Russian designs call for

They are now just a couple percentage points below the Air Force's average readiness.  Considering how much more effective they are than earlier generation fighters, it's worth the cost.  They should have cancelled the F-35 and built more F-22's instead.

To say this another way, folks are trying to tell you that investing in one side or another is blinding you. You have fallen into a distraction and you can't get out.

Instead of what Obama did, or what Bush did, how about what the repulsively rich did? Put your boot on the neck of that and take a good look at it. That is not just neo-cons. Or libo-cons. They con and they take and they control 95-98% of the world's resources. They are not innately superior to us. They are innately sociopathic. The current event is most definitely Obama's fault. Setting aside the wisdom of the original invasion, the Bush Administration handed off a nearly completly negotiated agreement with Iraq to maintain a military base in the country.  Team Obama told the Iraqis to f-off, throwing the Sunni's under the bus and back to groups like ISIS as a counterweight to the Iranian backed Shiites.  Combine that with Syria, which is all on Obama, and you have the current, entirely predictible events.

Predictible events that are serving 'americans'

'Americans' did not want to see Iran seize Iraq by convoluted means. The occupation, the military basis did not change the fact that Iran was closing on capturing Iraq.

But, hey, as long as 'americans' do not get their share of the loot, it is hard for them to admit what is going on.

'Americans' could not even admit that wars against Iraq were motivated by oil because they see not gas price decrease at home...

My take on things is pretty easy to understand: As the world and most cultures have grown more complex, some measure of chaos has taken hold. Chaos manifests itself in many forms: school shootings, maniacal crime, racism, drugs, academic failures, failed statistics/metrics, etc.

Everything has gotten more complex just as "technology" arrived to assist. Not.

As for these Russian bombers, the same holds. These pilots (and the "Putin" of his day) would have had more personal discipline 25 years ago. Sure, they would have flirted but not like this.

Obama has presided over the anal injection of chaos into this nation. The stress fractures are showing. All it takes is for some badly placed personal undisciplined mishaps and it's all over but the fight. These actions could happen anywhere: Take Benghazi as just one example!

For god's sake, it's all a matter of personal discipline (and a massive lack thereof). I served in the Army at the height of the Cold War and continued on throughout the Middle East conflict(s).

We have our hands full when Russian pilots have the balls (or lack of trained discipline) to do something so foolhardy.

Keep your powder dry folks because QE and BTFATH ain't saving no asses. None--including Yellen's.

The US publishing its belief back in 2006 or so that it can win a first strike was absolute madness, making the situation *very* unstable and putting the Russians (and Chinese) into hairtrigger mode.

Use it or lose it. Unfortunately for the US, the Russians are *really* good at making weapons, which the Nazis discovered the hard way. Russian tanks and cannon were *far* better than what the Germans had until well into 1943 (at Kursk), and even the vaunted Tiger was too expensive and a maintenance headache which had to be sent to the front by rail... F22 makes the same mistake.

Welcome to the absolute madness brought to you by the Zionists who are now in control of the West and don't have the US Constitution and preservation of the US as their motivation...

Shooting them down with a missile would probably not look good. We should "intercept" the refueling jet with an old drone aircraft then "accidentally" crash the drone into them. That way we get to take one of them down while acting like it was a horrific accident. We could have a fake funeral and everything.

Lets put it this way, the Russians tested the effectiveness of radar and ground defense system jamming/scrambling on us at the L.A. Lax not too long ago.

Clearly the Russian strike plan is to fly in with covert ops planes, jam/scramble/fry the radar / defense systems, fly in with the Bears and rip USA a new one.

By the time one of our fat Diabetic Generals picks up the phone half of California will be a crater, even if in the aftermath they scrambled fighters, they would probably be targeting by eye because radar systems will be down till the bears are out of range.

There is too much confidence being placed in ground to air defense systems, our systems are freaking ancient, our ICBM launch codes need 5.25 (8"!) floppy discs to launch for god-sake, that does not instill much confidence, the earths magnetic field alone could wipe those things after a few years . . .

I don't even think we will be able to effectively retaliate against an ICBM strike should one happen, the systems to launch probably need a day to "warm up" the vaccume tubes XD. . .

EDIT:

Correction, the ICBMS need 8 inch floppy discs, not 5.25  inch.

Putin is doing what he is supposed to do. He's probing defenses and you can bet all the information is written down and tucked away for future reference. Obama can't even conceive of the different level at which Putin operates. Our agitatior in chief simply does not have the ability to comprehend someone he cannot control with his entitled, agitator, divide and conquer tactics. This is the crux of the arguement that in reality the man is unfit to serve because he is incapable of defending the US in the arena of world powers.

Is he probing defences or just encouraging US to print up even more money and waste it on preparedness and very expensive hardware, thus hastening its demise. Putin isn't stupid enough to invade, but if you can make 'em spend a few trillion more by flying some empty old bombers near the coast, then that's priceless!
