A good example of thought control is the concept of racism. A hundred years ago no one would have a clue what you were talking about much less the meaning of the word. I believe this to be axiomatic. In fact, I KNOW that I can be had, and strive everyday not to be the greater fool.
Yet I still get conned from time to time, and I know that too. No matter how hard I try. I think I am duped far less than the average Joe on the street because I am diligent regarding what is true, and I will entertain even the remotest idea without summarily rejecting it; that does not mean that I will believe it, what it means is that I wargame in my mind every possible alternative, and for me, I think I am fooled maybe 10% or less than what the cattle experience.
It it folly though to think that you can't be had. The best you can do is minimize it, which leads me to my point. Most cons are effective because the perp is able to bypass your left brain and go through your right brain straight into you reptilian, or primitive brain.
Ever cling ot an idea, or worse, reject someone else's idea regardless of how long the debate is going, and during that disagreement, debate, what ever you may call it, you are getting angry with your "opponent" (there's a key indicator - if the person that you are having an exchange is considered your opponent in your mind then that is a red flag) no matter what points he makes?
Well, that is your emotional brain getting in the way of your logical brain. And the reason that you are getting angry, contemptuous, the reason that you think "he's twisting your words", or "he's still not right, I am just so upset right now that I can't engage effectively", is that he is LOGICALLY DEFEATING you.
When someone has logically defeated you, thank him for that. Celebrate it. And buy him a beer. For he has just done you a favor.
See, he was passionate enough in the search for truth that he found a nugget of it. Perhaps an ugly, uncomfortable nugget of truth, but truth nevertheless. And he shared it with you. And in order to have any hope of knocking down the right brain barrier, he soon realized that he needed to put you into checkmate.
It's often not personal. You needed to run out or shields, internal barriers, fallacies, to have any chance of understanding that nugget of truth. No guaranteee of success though. How many times did YOU walk away in disgust, calling him a "nutcase" or a "loon", while basking in the certitude of your belief, even though you have been bitchslapped in a logical exchange? Here's a warning sign: If you run out of ammo in an argument, and he's still hammering you with facts, and you resort to emotional arguments or insults, then you have been had, and had deeply by someone, or some group prior and they've fooled you far better than your ego could possibly accept.
Time to look deep inside oneself and figure out what is causing you to cling to the belief that you refuse to let go of.
So instead of being angy, thank him and be grateful that he has logically defeated you. For you have just had a wrong corrected in your mind, and whoever it was that made you viscerally uncomfortable and out of words cared enough about the truth to share it with you.
No bullshit here. It wasn't you that he necessarily cared about. It is the dissemination of the truth that he's passionate for. But that shouldn't matter. If you need for people to care about you then you have deeper issues, or perhaps THAT is the key issue that acts as a barrier for truth.
So you are both lucky and of good fortune. It is good to be logically defeated because from that comes enlightenment, and from enlightenment comes truth. That is indeed a great gift.
