US Amphibious Warship With 550 Marines Enters Persian Gulf

Tyler Durden's picture

Following the arrival of the US aircraft carrier CVN-77, the ironically named George H.W. Bush, in the Persian Gulf, another US warship, LPD-19, the USS Mesa Verde also entered the Persian Gulf moments ago.

Its cargo: some 550 US marines.

Mesa Verda has entered the Gulf to "provide the commander-in-chief additional options to protect American citizens and interests in Iraq, should he choose to use them." Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby said in a statement.

"USS Mesa Verde is capable of conducting a variety of quick reaction and crisis response operations. The ship carries a complement of MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft." He said.

As CNN reported earlier, this comes after President Obama ruled out sending ground troops to the militant-assaulted country. The USS Mesa Verde is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, a ship designed to carry an expeditionary force across the sea and deploy landing craft and helicopters.

Will the marines be offloaded in Iraq? Surely not: after all Obama, rushing to catch AF1 to Palm Spring last week said he didn’t intend to send ground troops to Iraq again, two years after pulling out American troops from the country. And Obama never lies about stuff like that.

Close, 550 marines is force enough to cover an urgent retreat should that be necessary. And that's just years after State Department acquired and developed prime real estate piece in Baghdad, soon to be Al Qaeda worldwide headquarters.

Just like the Romans' incessant battles against the northern tribes (Gaels, Celts, Goths, etc...)  Once they got a toe-hold in lands not-there-own, it was a constant drain on their man-power and resources.

Same here today.

>> a wedding picture

Funny shit.  I had one of those floating around (mine, not yours) for the 30  years since the divorce.  It finally went to hell out in the pole barn.  It was a great big 12X16 or some silly size.  God, the innocence of youth.  Funny thing is, I knew I was making a huge mistake but I got engaged to shut her the fuck up and keep the pussy rolling.  I figured in a year and a half were sure to split up.  Stupid me.  On the bright side, the marriage only lasted three years and I was never that stupid again.  I just broke up with a 24 year significant other and it was oh so simple.  She moved out, came back, packed her shit, I loaded it up in my 7X16, set her up in the new place, kiss good by, and it was over.  This time I kept my house, my bank account, and no double attorney's bills to pay.  Marriage, like most of you know, is a scam not to be repeated.

You got far. Look up statute for time limit to file.

>> common thread

Hey, I never said I wasn't the problem.  Still, I see no reason to pay two attorneys to give half of what I own to some woman.  Why point the finger of blame?  Take your ball and move on.

Mon, 06/16/2014 - 11:56 | 4861439 MachoMan
MachoMan's picture

If you can accept your failures, then it makes perfect sense to avoid fees of all sorts, including attorneys (who are usually the only ones who win in the deal).  I would question why I wasn't more inclined towards self improvement and ensuring that I was no longer the common denominator in failed relationships, but to each his own.  If you're perfectly happy in shallow relationships, then power to you, but most people aren't.  You may find that life is better with more sound attachments.

PS, depending on your jurisdiction, you should only have to cough up half if she's been married to you throughout your entire earning career; what you bring to the marriage, as well as any gifts or inheritance, are likely your separate property, subject to the rules on commingling.  In short, depending on your situation, you may have the option of firewalling most of your assets from a prospective spouse without having the conversation of a prenup that will eventually ensure your divorce.

F&S: What about the other uses, for self-defense and target practice?

BIDEN: Well, the way in which we measure it is—I think most scholars would say—is that as long as you have a weapon sufficient to be able to provide your self-defense. I did one of these town-hall meetings on the Internet and one guy said, “Well, what happens when the end days come? What happens when there’s the earthquake? I live in California, and I have to protect myself.”

I said, “Well, you know, my shotgun will do better for you than your AR-15, because you want to keep someone away from your house, just fire the shotgun through the door.” Most people can handle a shotgun a hell of a lot better than they can a semi-automatic weapon in terms of both their aim and in terms of their ability to deter people coming. We can argue whether that’s true or not, but it is no argument that, for example, a shotgun could do the same job of protecting you. Now, granted, you can come back and say, “Well, a machine gun could do a better job of protecting me.” No one’s arguing we should make machine guns legal.

In a truly macabre sort of way, it would be fascinating to see the 550 marines take on the group everyone's got their panties on a wad over, head on, mano e mano.  I have to think the marines would rip them a new ahole.

That grizzly fascination aside, my preference would be we stay the fuck out of that shithole and  let them figure it out.  Learn to live on on less oil, a whole bunch less.  Not a real popular opinion around these parts, I'm sure, but I'd much rather see the SUV driving, 4,000 sq ft house with a pool living, pampered bitch soccer mom with spoiled brood family, be forced by circumstance to tone it down to something severely moderated.  Fuck the gluttonous consumption for corporate profit, propped up by a military run on borrowed money.

>> Everyone assumes

You assume what I assume wrongly.  I know we, as a country, don't import much ME oil.  But we use a bunch, and import a bunch. And if we were to severely curtail our consumption, it would have a huge impact on the ME, whether we, or others, are doing the buying there. And we spend a huge amount of money we don't' have protecting oil companies and their assets.  Oil companies who don't give a Fiddler's Damn about the US or it's citizens. And to say we're going to be net exporters of oil is utterly ridiculous.

If we start exporting oil, we'll have to import more.  We are not, and will not at our current consumption rates, become oil independent.  Exporting oil means that we will simply be middle men, skimming off the top.  And just because we don't import very much of our oil from the middle east doesn't mean that you can just knock some of the middle eastern supply of oil out and America will just go on, peachy keen.  Knock out middle eastern oil, and other countries that rely on it will start clamoring for our sources.  That's the stuff that wars are made out of.

How well, exactly, do you think Marines performed in Afghanistan and Iraq against insurgents/rebels/freedom fighters who had anything like the equivalent firepower?

Here's a hint - 22 year olds dumb enough to think they're over there killing "terrorists" who threaten "freedom" even as his government attacks that freedom relentlessly at home, aren't always the victor against dedicated, experienced ground troops who want you the fuck out of his country after watching you and your fellow Americans kill tens of thousands of civilians all premised on the obvious lie that 9/11 was something other than a US Pentagon/Mossad joint op.

It is threatening to think the country might quickly fall to the position of a second rate power mired in debt with many of the options we have come to see as our right suddenly ripped away. It is frustrating that in many ways the country has become its own worse enemy guilty of political inaction and squandering its power through a series of bad choices and missteps. More on this shift in power and our best response in the article below.

In Iraq... 3000 sorties, 5200 hours, deemed fit to carry a commanding general and US President through field of operations (that's right, there's a Marine One that's a V-22), in theatre since 2007 and never taken down by enemy fire...

In Afghanistan, 100k flight hours as of 2011, lowest accident rate of any Marine aircraft by far, deemed the safest craft in Marine inventory by large measure...

Note also there is nothing, repeat nothing in Marine inventory that can meet the "golden hour" requirements for medical evac like the V-22 can... the platform completely turns over standard thought around combat air support in this area...

in short, you don't know what you're talking about... seems to be a trend here on RThedge when it comes to US military capability...

What - you're using gov't numbers? The Osprey's notoriety can't be overlooked. It may well be safer now in relative terms, but there was a steep price to pay and it wasn't in worthless $.

since it's not a civilian platform, what other numbers are there to be used? weren't the original numbers that everyone is so concerned about govt numbers?

Those are certainly impressive numbers.  Even more so when you start with cooking what, 22 IIRC, with 2 accidents from the get go.

y'all need to stop reading Wired and Time ragazine articles from 7 years ago and get with the program... there is no denying the V-22's combat service record to date...

Op readiness is in the high 80th percentile which is unheard of for a platform with so may operational requirements that's this new and complex... plus, lowest accident rate of _any_ Marine rotorcraft to date by far... sorry, the facts simply don't corroborate your feelings on the matter...

it's cute how you think accidents all get reported nice and honest-like.

Look, the F-35 is the closest that the MIC has come to literally raping the American people.  Meanwhile, the warthog was retired although it could be tasked with a range of missons in the forseeable, is dependable as hell, and for that matter the most fun you can have inside something not iself inside a woman.

War is a racket.

I see your point on the F-35, which is a fucking piece of shit... that's my technical assessment, btw... but this is a V-22 discussion...

and, I do love the A-10... once again, if you want ground support done right, have an ex-Stuka pilot influence your design team, you'll get it right every time...

+1000 on the A-10. Hell of an aircraft to bring hell to the enemy.

On the V-22 - I remember the beginning - it was not pretty. It may well be a stable aircraft now, I don't know. Mashing up an aircraft (traditional fixed wing, not the stealth bricks) that wants to fly with one that fights every minute it's airborne (rotary wing) and you get Frankenflight.

In the case of your original point, generational differences could easily account for a different perspective, one of the benefits of this watering hole being actual diversity of both perspective and opinion.

The US embassy in Baghdad can become worldwide headquarters for al Quida.  Business matters will be transferred to another power.

The marinies will be hungry by the time they get there, so the food will be prepared and ready to eat.  Some kosher wine for the table will be available.

Stop obeying orders.

The Constitution says wars need to be declared by congress.

You've submitted yourself to a Presdient with no legal oversight.

That means you're being used like a chess piece.

STOP. OBEYING. ILLEGAL. ORDERS. You have a right to refuse illegal orders.

(the following conversation is all in Farsi)

"Look, ValJar, we have Quds force in place. You need men on the ground, too."
"But Mr Imam, our people will not stand for it."
"Your people have no say in this, nor do ours. We know you rule with an iron fist. Get to it."

The cocksucker-in-chief is such a fucking idiot and a liar.  No boots on the ground?  What if boots on the ground are needed to prevent Benghazi X 100?  Not that we should have an embassy with 5500 people in Baghdad anyway, but WTF?  Using Marines to cover the evacuation of US personnel in a war torn country is a much better use of our military than what we have been doing for a long damn time.  We set the stage for this shit, and now we have troops over there, with the cic saying no boots on the ground when we might very well need boots on the ground to not abandon the people that we sent over there.  For fucks sake, I wish we could just quit meddling in everybody else's business.

Openly brazen about what their plans are or in this case the backup plan for Syria is.

I believe he is just going to evacuate all US personnel and let the situation in Iraq worsen. Then call again for open intervention in Syria to get to the 'root' of the problem.

He'll make sure to tell everyone he was right about intervening in Syria as many times as he can.

It would be comical if so many people weren't dying.
