The word "tittytainment" was coined for the first time in 1995 by the neo-liberal ideologue Zbigniew Brzezinski, member of the Trilateral Commission and ex-national security adviser of United States President Jimmy Carter, during the conclusion of the first "State of the World Forum", which was hosted at the Fairmont Hotel in the city of San Francisco.

The objective of this meeting was to determine the state of the world, suggest desirable objectives and principal activities to achieve them, and to establish global politics to match them. The attendees to this meeting (Mikhail Gorbachev, George Bush, Margaret Thatcher, Václav Havel, Bill Gates, Ted Turner, etc.) arrived at the conclusion that a 20:80 society is inevitable. This means that the work provided by 20% of the world population would be sufficient to sustain the world economy, while the other 80% would be without work or opportunities, nourishing a growing frustration.

This is where Brzezinski's concept came into play. Brzezinski suggested that "tittytainment," a mix of physical and psychological methods, be used to control people's frustration and predictable protests. He then explained the term as being a portmanteau fused from titty and entertainment, alluding to the sleeping and lethargic effect that is produced when a baby is breastfed.

I am afraid the notion of imposing moderation, mandating "sustainable" growth or requiring economic self restraint will get you branded as a card carrying communist.

In small civic units it may seem different, but on a global scale, humans seem to be self regulating only by means of Darwinism.

What a dark thought.

Another round of tetes for everyone.

interestingly, some of the "biggest players" in our european context and discussion are small civic units. small nations like Luxembourg, Denmark, Finland, Austria, but also extra-EU countries like Switzerland and Norway or federated semi-sovereign like the German "countries" (and in part the wannabe-sovereign regions of Scotland, Catalonia, Veneto, etc.)

they all felt the winds of globalized change first. they all realized first that you have to adapt to the "business climate change"

and they drive most of the truly sensible parts of our "economic zone experiment" called the European Union, particularly in the field of economic competition, anti-trust, etc

they know that if left to the globalized tides, their way of life is threatened

and so they bring the best proposals on merging what has to be merged and keep apart what has to be kept apart

historically, the small ally to counter the big as often as the big swallows the small. so I counter your dark thoughts with a small glimmer of hope

I am hoping people in the US will get with it as a matter of necessity. Last night I was explaining to someone else that the Chinese look at all the plastic shit they manufacture for Walmart and laugh. They don't want cheap crap if the can avoid it. And practically speaking they don't have a place to put it all.

On the other hand they are destroying their environment manufacturing all that shit.

However, I think they are now resisting the idea of having their culture swallowed up by global brands, which is good.

Small is beautiful.

to put my comment in a picture, the big trees find the current forest still distasteful and not optimized enough for them. triple canopy? small fires catching big trees? inefficient

let's poison and cut the two lower rank kind of vegetation - particularly the underbrush that so often burns and starts the natural fires of renewal (aka creative distruction brought by small, growing and innovative biz) all organic material has to be forced to big, efficient trees. leave it all to the biggest trees, and fight all change to that, as a protection of the big trees. including by the financialization practice of buying up small, innovative companies by big biz

remember Yellowstone's great fires? they finally brought some sense to the park's management

and this is the true economic role of the state. to manage the "forest". to manage the markets in favour of competition. in favour of market transparency. in favour of the rule of law. in favour of the economic rights of all, big or small, corp or human. to level the playing field. to promote a healthy, sustainable economy

and if you find this statist, then perhaps you are already a victim of this distasteful propaganda. in fact, go on and bring a nice trendy anarcho-capitalist argument, I'd be delighted to take it apart

the 20:80 "division" goes back to Vilfredo_Pareto, an Italian engineer, sociologist, economist, political scientist and philosopher which made several important contributons to economics, particularly in the study of income distribution and in the analysis of individual choices

as wiki explains, he was also responsible for popularizing the use of the term "elite" in social analysis

he introduced the concept of Pareto efficiency and discovered that income and wealth follow the Pareto distribution, a power law (mathematical concept which interestingly has an apt name when applied to sociology) when he first made the observation that 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population

all in all, despite his discoveries, he is still quite unknown outside of a few managerial applications, particularly because his discoveries were promply misused for propaganda purposes by the fascists. Karl Popper dubbed him the "theoretician of totalitarianism"

what does it really mean, his theory of a "natural" 80:20 distribution of wealth? first, be reminded that this applies more to wealth/capital than to income. second, among the top 20% the power law continues to apply, meaning that you can split them further into 16% (owning "only" 20% of the total 80%) and 4% (owning 80% of the 80%). and it goes on

but it also means that if you increase the "economic pond's" size, you increase the size of the top capitalist's wealth. meaning that if for example France and Italy share their economic "zone", the top 20% of both countries merge and change. and the size of both top companies and top capitalist's wealth increases. this is for example visible in the mergers and aquisitions of companies, all producing more efficiency through scale

a different example: Bill Gates and Microsoft. being both global players, their "size" is adjusted to the global "pond". in a different, more nationalistic and protectionistic world, you would find one Gates and one Microsoft in each country

this is the reason why neo-liberals love, love, love increases in economic "pond" sizes, be it the EU or the big "down with all trade barriers" trade pacts as the two secret ones being discussed by US megacorps to both Asia and Europe. they favour the big established players

of course, this has all to do with capital vs labour. we are currently in a global environment where capital is calling all the shots, buying politics left and right, and labour is being submitted to a relentless attack through offshoring and robotization. so the 20% float up thanks to that

seen through the eyes of Pareto, the 20:80 world is natural. yet this does not mean that rational, sane citizens have to blindly submit to this "law of nature and humanity"

most of the really hurtful consequences of globalization (which is nothing else than the great sharing and merger of previously national economic zones) are not through globalization per se, but through the other premises of neo-liberalism: that "markets are always right", that unbridled lobbyism is always a good thing, that "all biz is good biz", that "big biz is beautiful", that "money speaks", that "corporations are also people, my friend" and that corps have a right to influence politics, particularly through political donations...

... and of course the consequence of the increse of size of global oligarchs

a globalized world economy increases "efficiency through scale". but too much efficiency decreases the nimbleness of the economy in general, particularly through lack of competition (another victim of globalization-as-driven-today) and poses the dangers of the global scale TBTF phenomenon

and global megacorps decrease the social competence of the economy, best seen through the labour offshoring trends

all in all, it's a question of human size vs global size

my two cents: bring back moderation. the neo-liberals adopted tools from everywhere - including classical fascism - to get BIG BIZ on the top of everything

yet all corporate economic activity is historically chartered by the sovereign - in republics by The People. as distastefully anti-biz this might sound to some ears, corporations enjoy special privileges because the sovereign expects special returns

and while Small Biz enjoys only the privilege of limited liability (over the normal and natural citizen), Big Biz increasingly enjoys the privilege of NO LIABILITY WHATSOEVER. which counts doubly for that special kind of overprivileged megacorp, the megabank

wake up, citizen, and smell the coffee. if it's too big... it has to be cut to pieces until competition returns. fight against big corp propaganda. no competition and no liability is not liberal, not conservative and not socialist. it's just cartel/monopolistic/oligopolistic corporatocracy, the worst of many forms of capitalism, and the most corruptive

and so I reject this notion of a future where the work of 20% is enough as part and parcel of this big biz notion and propaganda that we should "leave it to them" to rationalize and streamline the world's economy to the point where there is only one big conglomerate of global megacorps efficiently producing all we need

It is Frustrating that Fascist Money Grubbing Members of Congress come back and say

1) Americans Don't have the Skills
2) Americans Don't have the motivation to work these jobs like agriculture or factories
3) Americans are lazy and less educated
4) Everyone has to work

No the Economy has changed in many ways:

1) Automation increased productivity
2) Robots are now used in many industries
3) CapEx is not happening, Real Capital Formation is not Occurring in a healthy way
4) Capital Flight, Stagnant Capital, Brain Drain to other countries, Oversea Incorporation risks social programs, Tax Havens exist for those with money to pay Lawyers, Corporations can be looted with high expenses & Overhead, Off Shore Production combined with outsourcing Jobs drain millions of US Jobs
5) Today not only do kids, disabled, elderly, retired, and stay at home parents "Not Work", but you have millions convicted of nonviolent crimes who can't qualify for jobs, and you have many that chose not to work for low compensation or part time jobs that you have to drive to get to and pay to much money in feeding yourself
6) Political Lobbying fights to Outsource Jobs and will Fight to Keep Jobs Overseas (Slave Labor Rates)

Plus you have groups like 501(c) organization that Lobby to Outsource US Jobs

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-elk/obama-administration-uses_b_57967... (Lobbyist Business Roundtable)

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=ahJ6.8WnIjco (Moral hazard)

http://www.globalresearch.ca/the-offshore-outsourcing-of-american-jobs-a...

http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2010/10/13/123956/chamber-outsourcing-... (Report by the nonpartisan campaign finance watchdog Campaign Money Watch found that more than 1.4 million jobs were outsourced since 1994 in the nine states in which the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is spending significant money. The group also found that more than 184,000 jobs were lost to outsourcing in the 22 congressional districts in which the Chamber has spent $4.8 million on political ads in the same time period.)

http://campaignmoneywatch.com/chamber/outsourcing

CONCLUSION: There never were enough jobs for all women, men & children to work in Modern USA. AND there will never be a larger Labor Participation Rate in the USA unless we meet some kind of catastrophe

At least Zbigniew Brzezinski is interesting. His sense of humor is wry but not so twisted that his jokes are lame. His jokes are like, "This is a tremendous waste of human capital." as he operates the meat grinder, whereas Hilary's jokes are like "They're dead. Who cares? Bwahahahaa... fuck 'em. Get on w'it!".

Its not really entertaining anymore, is it? The only guy I can keep watching over and over again is George Carlin. He saw through all of these shitheads and laid it all out on a platter.

This is a society proclaiming decay. I wonder what all those Polish Officers who faced off against the German Panzers or who were massacred at Katyn would say.

Talk about defeatism.
"Self defeatism" actually.
