The Shark Has Jumped the Shark

I'm speechless. Just speechless.

I present to you: Entrepreneur Barbie. This is not a joke. ("Entering the entrepreneurial world, this independent professional is ready for the next big pitch. Barbie Entrepreneur doll wears a sophisticated dress in signature pink that features modern color blocking and a sleek silhouette. Her "smartphone," tablet and briefcase are always by her side")

I'm an entrepreneur. A real one. An honest-to-God, up-from-the-bootstraps, take-on-the-world entrepreneur. I assure you that signature pink and a sleek silhouette were never involved. Neither was modern color blocking (unless you count the fact that, when needed, I could match a blue shirt with khakis). "Entrepreneur" has officially lost every shred of its meaning.

Oh, and if you're not fully-convinced that the current tech bubble makes the one from 1999 seem like the makings of a wise and prudent group of deep thinkers, I offer this bonus:

0622-yo

Hey, world! March 2000 called. It wants its bubble back.

The Money Valve III

... 9 Industry ...

Industrialists glorify what they do as being “Entrepreneurs”, and of course Ayn Rand glorified the iconographic John Galt as such a Rugged Individualist who adds value to a society, while everybody else is just a Leech on them. In fact of course precisely the opposite is true, what the Industrialist does is find a niche in the whole system to leech off of. The “Small Bizman” isn’t the core of Capitalism, the core is in the large Corporations and TBTF Banks established in many cases in the Colonial Era. The small Bizman inserts himself into the system at some point and captures part of the downhill flow of energy. Each one strives to “get rich”, but in reality can only do so by sieving off profit from the labor he hires to do the work of the biz. The justification for the higher standard of living he enjoys than the people he employs comes from the idea that if he did not organize and run the biz, these folks would not have jobs at all! Basically what this person does is serve as an enabler for the whole system of Industrialization to continue, as a Middle Manager in it. It is a disguised slavery system, with the Middle Manager Entrepreneurs serving as Overseers for the Masters at the top who run the whole show. They pat themselves on the back for their ingenuity, drive Jags and fly First Class and puff themselves up with their success. Then they complain their taxes are too high. Gimmee a break. ...

Radical - Love most of your deep thinking commentary on evolution and competition but your way off base. I do drive a Mercedes but it is a used 230 model, great gas mileage low on maintinence. I spent $160k out of pure philanthropy to build a noosphere for education. The behavior you speak of is not entrepenuars but senior executive management of corporations.

If you want to change the world 1 or 2 degrees you WILL compromise with capital. You get the money and then steer it slowly to a better world. The hard slavery of yesteryear has been replaced with soft slavery. Still unnaceptable but an improvement.

What if Tesla had told J.P. Morgan "sure, lets use my invention of radio created by accident first, then we'll explore wireless energy later as you propose." He would have been a multimillionaire and then could have told JPM to take a hike and implemented his innovation. Tesla would have then lobbyer government to make sure it got regulatory approval. Instead we keep on with big oil lobby. Awsome eh?

I am an idealogue but also became a realist. JPM offered me funding in 2008 and I declined like Tesla. It was STUPID. I know better now. You can add value in this world and also be a realist OR you can be a martyr. Choose.

Raging Debate, I was merely quoting from an article by RE, who posts as Rogue Economist on Zero Hedge. I copied and pasted that passage from his article on "The Money Valve," because I thought it provided a relevant alternative view point to the role of "entrepreneurs."

My own views are more nuanced. I do not see that actually being much of a "choice," other than due to the illusions of our unavoidable ignorance, that forces us to make "choices" on the basis of guesses. I think that energy always flows along its own path of least action, or least resistance, which, in human terms, is the available path of least morality. The overall trend of the industrial revolution was the development of technologies that could strip-mine the planet's natural resources in ways were which not possible before those technologies were developed. Both the social and the physical were a package deal, which have been on their trajectory: the debt engines financed the steam engines, until, a couple of hundred years later, we have globalized electronic fiat money frauds, backed by atomic energy. Meanwhile, there is almost NO "industrial ecology." The economic system was based on turning natural resources into pollution and garbage as fast as possible, within which context, entrepreneurs were catalyzing that transformation. The path we are on now is for the rapidly approaching diminishing returns in strip-mining the planet causing severe collapses into chaos.

My basic view is that human beings were always living as robbers in their environment. Hunter-gatherers were entrepreneurs, out looking for food, that they could hunt or gather. They too were turning their available natural resources into garbage and pollution, as they ate their food. The differences were that they were limited to being only animals, with nothing but animal energy, and, as animals, they were already within natural ecologies which were very, very old, that had developed the abilities to recycle sufficiently to be sustainable. HOWEVER, the industrial revolution changed all of that. Humans became tens, then hundreds, then thousands, ... and now trillions of times more powerful and capable, due to advancing science and technology, (which is on the path towards becoming quadrillions!) YET STILL, human beings were controlled by their biggest bullies, to use those powers within a social pyramid system to strip-mine the planet.

My theoretical recommendations are that we should develop better integrated systems of human, industrial and natural ecologies. I presume that we will EVENTUALLY do so, THE HARD WAY, because human societies are controlled by lies backed by violence, and therefore, the industrial revolution operates along the path of least morality, with the maximum evil deliberate ignorance.

The economics of entrepreneurs is about the allocation of resources, within some members of some generations, with the dominate members being the ones primarily directing that. Nothing stops them from destroying the future for everybody. Eventually, we MAY evolve more social and political systems that provide more resistance, to change the path of least resistance, so that industry does not operate in the most immoral ways. However, at present, entrepreneurs make other human beings with "money" happy, by helping them turn more resources into garbage and pollution faster, on the currently one-way express trip to hell ... We keep on doing boom after bust, with bigger BOOMS followed by bigger BUSTS. Consider the examples in the Rust Belt, like in Detroit. The problems now are that is pretty well the whole world's trajectory, while those places which are booming still based on being able to do that in ways which must surely go bust too.

My views are that the death controls are central to everything else. That is primarily why resolving human problems any better is so damn difficult. When people can not agree, then they fight, and those who won tended to be those who were the best at backing up dishonesty with violence. That is the way that the real world works. We do NOT get a "choice" about that.

The basic problems are we must be entropic pumps, and therefore, entropy is the basic problem. Metaphorically, that is the same as saying the problem is "evil." The industrial revolution was about understanding energy, which is "good," and entropy, which is "evil." We have the same political economy problems now as always, except magnified many orders of magnitude by science and technology, with more coming, IF civilization survives ... All of that is so brand new that there has been no time for better evolutionary ecologies to develop through industry. There are barely any more moral entrepreneurs, because there is barely any more moral market. On the contrary, the "market" is dominated by banksters, and so, tends towards the maximum immoralities.

I regard intelligence as the internalization of natural selection. Given enough time, all over the world, various traditional cultures developed their own local moralities, which enabled their systems to be more or less sustainable, because if people live in the same ways for thousands of years, then that is what survives to be there. However, the industrial revolution is like a wild new weed, colonizing everywhere, which has not gone through enough ecological succession to develop more sustainable systems. I would like to recommend more moral entrepreneurs, in a more moral market. However, almost nobody gets that "choice." Instead, they are forced to compromise with the banksters' government enforced frauds, as the basic frame of reference that they must operate within. Their customers or clients are stuck in the same context, and all together, they act to trash the planet. The successful entrepreneur makes "money" serving a demand, within systems which have become criminally insane. However, since everyone is stuck inside those systems, they must compromise to do that, and paradoxically they are more successful the more that they do that.

RM - A quote "nothing new under the sun" - Solomon
The same evolution creating atomic weapons 'trillions of times more powerful' are also same that created the catalytic converter or gmo's. Yes, they have there real issues but we carry on. You admit the solutions come with a lag. I agree.

As for 'moral' entrepenuars I am one. I actually thought like you that I would have to die trying almost alone to build a noosphere. But to my delight I was not only offered funding by JPM but also Irish Central. The man who contacted me quit Central Banking in disgust.

Some of the billionaires of his club were Richard Branson, Henry Winkler and Warren Buffet and Bill Gates. They do NOT agree with government. But they are forced to play along based on scale of there organizations (makes them political and not by choice most times) in the attempt to slow decay in ways we 'purist' idealogues find disgusting. Compeomise with capital or government sucks! But being a martyr is worse.

There is no solution to the paradoxes of evolution outside of creativity which loosely translates to new tools. Those with capital will exploit them for personal gain first.

Evolution socially is advancing with tools and accelerating. It is not as I wish as an ideoglogic purist but it is what it IS. If as an entrepenuar the best I can do is work around the margins and move the 1st down marker a couple of yards as in American football so be it. I don't have to like it. I can choose to be a martyr instead and always just bitch.

You may see me doing something else though if 1st Amendment rights are revoked. The ONLY reason I still live in America is that I can speak freely. When that changes it is time to get the hell out VERY fast. Corporate America does not innovate. We're still using core tech from the 1950s. Some of us can build some core tech but we know it will be squashed until mankind learns from pain like WW2 or perhaps 20 years of stagnation. Even millionaires want to grow but globally we have stalled now completely. Large corporations build monopolies, they stop innovating and bribe government instead, it is not the entrepenuar. You are very wrong this one time and as said, believe you one if the brightest thinkers on ZH.

RD, I agree with you that there are individual exceptions, which seem to include yourself.  RM is saying that there is no solution, because the human species has evolved to the point that individual exceptions are always absorbed, or remain small, isolated, and squashable by those at the top of the global social pyramid.  So long as living space is limited to Earth, only social breakdown would crash the pyramid, however that would reduce entrepreneurialism to finding better ways to forage.  Eventually entrepreneurialism would facilitate recreation of the pyramd, as humans would remain an evolving animal species, still apes at base.

AKA - In general it is true about repetition in evolution and I recognized RM's insightful cycle of evolution.

Condemning entrepenuars that they will turn out the same way makes a statement to me from RM they hold no value because they won't make any improvement and give people relief. This is my point of contention.

The self-made millionaires of yesteryear. Did they add value and make improvement in living conditions or not? So if RM's correct evolutionary cycle theories are true so is my statement that they will add value. Will some of them become the group of corrupt elite. Yes. 30-40 years from now they will want to defend there turf from competition. But I'll take the inprovements and relief in-between thank you very much.

The social pyramid breaking down is inevitable improvements learned by pain also occur afterward.

When a commnetator stereotypes entepenuars saying they drive expensive cars and acting like bigshots he is wrong and that was what I was also attempting to convey.

I am not sure if RM ever tried to get a business venture off the ground from scratch and with pennies to start with. If so I would wager he wasn't driving around in a fancy car and acting like a bigshot.

Most entrepenuars fail because they don't put in the market research. It requires tremendous discipline. If they make it to expensive cars and become a bigshot the hell in-between is something RM may not understand.

These apps are pump and dumps on OTC market. But I also am a real entrepreneur. If you want to get a plan funded to do something real boy have times changed.

In the 90's, you could write your .com idea on a couple pages on Word and get funded with no projections. Now not only do you have to have a plan and demo app but need a fully working application and done marketing to gain substantial users. At that point it is debatable whether the pound of flesh is worth the funds. Still is I guess by a hair...

There are so many headwinds with the fascist cycle we're in entrepenuars are mostly considered hostile competition to be stamped out. This will end out of necessity as growth has stopped but less hostile policy will take a good number of years to emerge.

What I found works is hire a cheap lot of telemarketers and have a great but short marketing presentation. Getting into a competitors face for large sales deals even if you may only win a few then gets them to want to acquire you out of the market. Of course that still requires a substantial investment of $100k-$200k. But hey for a few million the ROI is stupendous.

There was a company that was going to acquire me for this reason for $6.3 m in 2008 but crash came. Revenue was $1.4 m and profit $200k. I called them a couple months ago and said I was ramping back up and will be meddling in there deals again (used nicer words of course). I said they could buy product for $125k with non-compete for a sector I dont care about anyways which they did and then they asked if I needed funding. Ill be meeting them in October. Even if it doesnt fly thats plenty of seed money to regrow organically. Yuk yuk yuk.
