"To My Fellow Filthy Rich Americans: Wake Up, People. The Pitchforks Are Coming"

Tyler Durden's picture

Excerpted from Nick Hanauer's OpEd in Politico (read more here),

Memo: From Nick Hanauer

To: My Fellow Zillionaires

You probably don’t know me, but like you I am one of those .01%ers, a proud and unapologetic capitalist. I have founded, co-founded and funded more than 30 companies across a range of industries—from itsy-bitsy ones like the night club I started in my 20s to giant ones like, for which I was the first nonfamily investor.

I tell you all this to demonstrate that in many ways I’m no different from you. Like you, I have a broad perspective on business and capitalism. And also like you, I have been rewarded obscenely for my success, with a life that the other 99.99 percent of Americans can’t even imagine.

But let’s speak frankly to each other. I’m not the smartest guy you’ve ever met, or the hardest-working. I was a mediocre student. I’m not technical at all—I can’t write a word of code. What sets me apart, I think, is a tolerance for risk and an intuition about what will happen in the future. Seeing where things are headed is the essence of entrepreneurship. And what do I see in our future now?

I see pitchforks.

At the same time that people like you and me are thriving beyond the dreams of any plutocrats in history, the rest of the country—the 99.99 percent—is lagging far behind. The divide between the haves and have-nots is getting worse really, really fast. In 1980, the top 1 percent controlled about 8 percent of U.S. national income. The bottom 50 percent shared about 18 percent. Today the top 1 percent share about 20 percent; the bottom 50 percent, just 12 percent.

But the problem isn’t that we have inequality. Some inequality is intrinsic to any high-functioning capitalist economy. The problem is that inequality is at historically high levels and getting worse every day. Our country is rapidly becoming less a capitalist society and more a feudal society. Unless our policies change dramatically, the middle class will disappear, and we will be back to late 18th-century France. Before the revolution.

And so I have a message for my fellow filthy rich, for all of us who live in our gated bubble worlds: Wake up, people. It won’t last.

If we don’t do something to fix the glaring inequities in this economy, the pitchforks are going to come for us. No society can sustain this kind of rising inequality. In fact, there is no example in human history where wealth accumulated like this and the pitchforks didn’t eventually come out. You show me a highly unequal society, and I will show you a police state. Or an uprising. There are no counterexamples. None. It’s not if, it’s when.

Many of us think we’re special because “this is America.” We think we’re immune to the same forces that started the Arab Spring—or the French and Russian revolutions, for that matter. I know you fellow .01%ers tend to dismiss this kind of argument; I’ve had many of you tell me to my face I’m completely bonkers. And yes, I know there are many of you who are convinced that because you saw a poor kid with an iPhone that one time, inequality is a fiction.

Here’s what I say to you: You’re living in a dream world. What everyone wants to believe is that when things reach a tipping point and go from being merely crappy for the masses to dangerous and socially destabilizing, that we’re somehow going to know about that shift ahead of time. Any student of history knows that’s not the way it happens. Revolutions, like bankruptcies, come gradually, and then suddenly. One day, somebody sets himself on fire, then thousands of people are in the streets, and before you know it, the country is burning. And then there’s no time for us to get to the airport and jump on our Gulfstream Vs and fly to New Zealand. That’s the way it always happens. If inequality keeps rising as it has been, eventually it will happen. We will not be able to predict when, and it will be terrible—for everybody. But especially for us.

The guy is clueless, which is no doubt why the last paragraph was left out:

The most ironic thing about rising inequality is how completely unnecessary and self-defeating it is. If we do something about it, if we adjust our policies in the way that, say, Franklin D. Roosevelt did during the Great Depression—so that we help the 99 percent and preempt the revolutionaries and crazies, the ones with the pitchforks—that will be the best thing possible for us rich folks, too. It’s not just that we’ll escape with our lives; it’s that we’ll most certainly get even richer.

Get it?  The state — i.e., the plaything of the oligarchs and thus the very engine of inequality — is supposed to be granted even more powers so that this time, for the first time in human history, it can help the 1 percent and the remaining 99.

Hey, Hanauer, kiss . . . my . . . ass . . .

I think they WANT the "pitchforks" / revolution to happen to give them an excuse to kill at will.  Let's be smarter than that and just walk the fuck away from their bullshit system.

Local communities working together, building permaculture gardens and food forests on EVERY vacant lot and rooftop will very quickly find that they don't need this decaying system any more.  Hungry?  There's a food forest on every block.  Running out of gas?  We can make biofuels from hemp.  Need building materials?  Hemp bricks.

Quoting Ayn Rand and other capitalist writers is "agitation?" Gotta love it.

Anyway, don't be surprised if capitalism doesn't treat you "occupiers" with "pitchforks" pretty much the same way as anybody else who threatens property values of the Owner Class.

Just like Fascism was the savior of civilization in times past, FEMA and DHS will be the saviors of capitalism today.

"It cannot be denied that Fascism...saved European civilization. The merit that Fascism has thereby won for itself will live on eternally in history...its policy has brought salvation..."

Yeah, yeah. Mr. Thomson tried to kill John Galt. But you hit like that pusscake James Taggart.

(from Atlas Shrugged...)

She moved her hands in groping gestures, half-waving it away, half trying to grasp it; when she answered, her words did not quite name it, but they were the only words she could find: "You . . . you're a killer...for the sake of killing..."

It was too close to the unnamed; shaking with terror, he swung out blindly and struck her in the face.

She fell against the side of an armchair, her head striking the floor, but she raised her head in a moment and looked up at him blankly, without astonishment, as if physical reality were merely taking the form she had expected. A single pear-shaped drop of blood went slithering slowly from the corner of her mouth.

He stood motionless—and for a moment they looked at each other, as if neither dared to move.

Not at all, bro. Besides Murray Rothbard, I've quoted Thomas Jefferson, Ayn Rand, Ludwig von Mises, Walter Block, Lew Rockwell, and Stephen Kinsella today, all in support of preserving property values and the hierarchy of capitalism. Problem?

P.S. Capitalism is indeed a strict hierarchy.  It might help you to start thinking of capitalism as the Dictatorship of the Privatariat.  "We libertarians do not oppose HIERARCHY or COMMAND or? AUTHORITY..." ~Stephan Kinsella

P.P.S. Remember, if you're free to leave your place of employment or your nation, then your staying makes it all voluntary.

PS  Being free to "leave" must be accompanied by real opportunity otherwise it is a false freedom (i.e., the freedom to be a "voluntary" slave or to starve).

Regarding your second issue - ever hear of an adhesion contract?  There's a reason why they are not enforceable at law.  Same situation regarding employment or country.  If one party has all the bargaining power, you effectivley have no choice.

Here, let me help you...

"It cannot be denied that Fascism and similar movements aiming at the establishment of dictatorships are full of the best intentions and that their intervention has, for the moment, saved European civilization. The merit that Fascism has thereby won for itself will live on eternally in history. But though its policy has brought salvation for the moment, it is not of the kind which could promise continued success. Fascism was an emergency makeshift. To view it as something more would be a fatal error."

A splint on a broken leg before surgical repair is an "emergency makeshift" that an emergency room doctor might apply over the weekend, until surgery opens on Monday.

So Mises is equating Fascism to an emergency room doctor.

Dr. Fascism, Dr. Fascism! Capitalism needs "saved" (Mises' word) in room 204!

Man, are you dense.

Mises is talking about the differences in strategies between communists & fascists vs Liberalism (large L). The conduct and ethos of a civilized people (civilization) vs fucking barbarians.

"Revolutionary ideas had been able to take root and flourish only because of the tolerance they had been accorded by their opponents, whose will power had been enfeebled by a regard for liberal principles that, as events subsequently proved, was overscrupulous. If the idea had occurred to them years ago that it is permissible to crush ruthlessly every revolutionary movement, the victories that the Third International has won since 1917 would never have been possible. For the militarists and nationalists believe that when it comes to shooting and fighting, they themselves are the most accurate marksmen and the most adroit fighters."

Here he is talking about how communist ideas take root among "liberals" who are by nature, tolerant to the point of naivete at times.

"The fundamental idea of these movements - which, from the name of the most grandiose and tightly disciplined among them, the Italian, may, in general, be designated as Fascist - consists in the proposal to make use of the same unscrupulous methods in the struggle against the Third International as the latter employs against its opponents."

Here he saying the fascist idea is the same, use whatever trickery, lies, deception, abuse of law etc. necessary to defeat both communists & Liberals.

"The Third International (edit: Do you even know what the Third International was?) seeks to exterminate its adversaries and their ideas in the same way that the hygienist strives to exterminate a pestilential bacillus; it considers itself in no way bound by the terms of any compact that it may conclude with opponents, and it deems any crime, any lie, and any calumny permissible in carrying on its struggle. The Fascists, at least in principle, profess the same intentions. That they have not yet succeeded as fully as the Russian Bolsheviks >>>in freeing themselves from a certain regard for liberal notions and ideas and traditional ethical precepts is to be attributed solely to the fact that the Fascists carry on their work among nations in which the intellectual and moral heritage of some thousands of years of civilization cannot be destroyed at one blow, and not among the barbarian peoples on both sides of the Urals, whose relationship to civilization has never been any other than that of marauding denizens of forest and desert accustomed to engage, from time to time, in predatory raids on civilized lands in the hunt for booty.<<< Because of this difference, Fascism will never succeed as completely as Russian Bolshevism in freeing itself from the power of liberal ideas."

You are either being purposely obtuse or have the reading comprehension skills of a two year old.

Fascism saved civilization, and Mises called it "salvation," even if it was problematic.

Today, FEMA, DHS, and the fascist police state are once again going to save civilization from the communist pitchfork brigade being rabble-roused here, and Mises would applaud again.

The quote you supplied was selectively edited (by you) to make it appear that Mises was anti-Liberal, he was not, he was anti-communist & anti-fascist.

Here is your butchered up quote again:

"It cannot be denied that Fascism...saved European civilization. The merit that Fascism has thereby won for itself will live on eternally in history...its policy has brought salvation..."

~Ludwig von Mises, Liberalism

Here is the real quote:

"It cannot be denied that Fascism and similar movements aiming at the establishment of dictatorships are full of the best intentions and that their intervention has, for the moment, saved European civilization. The merit that Fascism has thereby won for itself will live on eternally in history. But though its policy has brought salvation for the moment, it is not of the kind which could promise continued success. Fascism was an emergency makeshift. (edit, against communism asshole). To view it as something more would be a fatal error." Mises on socialism, both fascism & communism.

FEMA and DHS are going to be the "emergency makeshift" organizations that provide the same "salvation" that Fascism did back in Mises' day.

Sure, there's some problems with fascism and a police state, but they're better than going communist/anarchist and destroying private property, like these Zero Hedger pitchfork "Arab Springers" wanna do.

You need to actually read Mises.

They get paid by the word, or the keystroke, or the quick-witted out-of-context quotation.

I LIKE that 'Arab Springers' thingie. Isn't there a TeeVee host in the CONUS that goes by a SIMILAR name, who calls up the dregs of humanity out of the sewers to 'star' on his daytime show in order to make spectacles of themselves for an international audience of mind-controlled sheople? 'Jerry' something-or-other...

I especially like the association with 'Communism' (totalitarian military government couched as an 'economic theory') and 'Anarchism' (with pictures of wild people 'en'masse' raping, pillaging, and plundering WITHOUT any 'police state' rule present). The one element that binds them together is perhaps far off to the more archane and hidden truth: A PRIVATELY-HELD CENTRAL BANKING SYSTEM MADE UP OF OLIGARCHS THAT CONTROL THE EBB AND FLOW OF THE POPULACE'S TASTES, BUYING PATTERNS, AND EMOTIONS; TO THE POINT OF TOTAL POPULATION REDUCTION AND ENSLAVEMENT.

Oh, "Sure, there's some problems with fascism and a police state,..."

Would you care to elaborate further, Mr. 'Top Gear' Cheney? A few (million) rounds of D.U. poisoning a country, or the roundup of people and torture at the hands of sadists, or total control of everyone, everywhere, all the time, for any reason, and the 'kettling' of protests, and the eradication of the free will to travel, worship, and live life the way any individual sees fit, PERHAPS?

I don't state this intent often, but I will do this now, you fucker.

'Collateral damage' is a BITCH. That GPS thingie in your 'smartphone'; for example, is a WONDERFUL tracking device. I understand that several wedding parties and several gatherings of schoolchildren have been arbitrarily tracked and targeted and ERADICATED because of 'mistakes' made by those like you that espouse your 'Global Police State' construct in 'other nations'. A few million murdered here or there doesn't seem to bother the likes of you, does it? YOU have a 'higher calling' as a slut minion to your 'master'.

STAND, NOW, and SALUTE, and PLEDGE, to the following:

Let's hear your 'opinion' on the murder and overthrow of Mu'ah'mar Quadaffi. (SHIT, the spelling in English is so variant and SO hard to repeat correctly!)

Your sorry ass doesn't know the FIRST THING about the corporate-sponsored 'Arab Spring' shit, or the AL-CIA-DUH. How about the NEW corporate fascist group, 'ISIS'? YOUR MASTER-CONTROLLER is NOW trying to get a HALF A BILLION USD to FUND this 'group'.

You need to wipe your ass, now, 'Top gear', because the shit you are spewing from your well-worn cornhole is staining your underwear.

Americans are clearly dismayed at thedirection the country seems to be heading, but they are also docile in the face of decline and confused about possible solutions. Hanauer fears mobs heading for the castles of Greenwich and Palo Alto, but America’s disaffected these days are more likely to vent their rage behind closed doors as they shake their fists at Fox News or MSNBC and leave cranky comments on websites such as this one. It's actually the top .01, or even the .001% that we should be most concerned about. My wife and I calculated ourselves as top 4%, and I want to keep my quality of life and at the same time move down into the middle 50%.

Yes, I started from abject poverty, and worked my ass off to get where I am. But I got some damn lucky breaks and its only by the grace of God that we are where we are today. If we drop to the middle 50%, that means my fellow countrymen are doing as well as we are, which means that true merit and entrepenuerialship ruled the day, and that my friends, neighbors, and those that I have never met are in the same boat. Nothing would make me happier.

Being in the top 5% and NOT being rich (we're lower-upper middle class) shows you just how skewed and feudal this system really is.

Well, if folks didn't have the idea then, they sure do now.  The first thing the masses are going to do is set up a bolt-action .308 picket line at the end of the runway of every major and executive airport looking for learjets. Hell, I think they'll ground all flights.

The .01% will be trapped. No where to run. No where to hide. They'll hire armies of Blackwater types, who will be extremely effective at keeping the masses at bay.

Until the masses quickly realize "hey, if we target them first, THEN we can get to the feudal lords!". Once their attrition hits 10-15%, they admit that it's not worth all the gold they were promised.

If it happens, I hope it's so lightning fast that the Lords are trapped. They deserve the unemployed mob. They really do. This ass hole included.

Chapman was "made" by Keith Duckworth and Mike Costin aka Cosworth.  Then Ford through their badge on the engine.  England had great engine designers like John Judd and Brian Hart plus Duckworth.

DeLorean was a GM engineer who dressed like a hipster. He said GM was totally FU'ed and got fired. He was overshadowed by a guy with a bigger ego but who backed it up. Lee Iacocca.  Lee's Mustang far outsold DeLorean's GM GTO.  Lee took maybe too much credit for the Mustang but he was a very good engineer and salesman.

Old man Henry Ford 2 was going to make him CEO but was a bit of snob because Lido was Italian-American. At the last minute - Henry the anglo-phile reneg'ed because Lee's background.  Henry 2 had a castle in England. I guess he never knew the Romans gave the Brits running water.

Poor Lee bled Ford blue too. Lee is a fairly decent guy - Henry 2 - not so much.

The only problem is he is only focusing on USA. The inequity is global. Who's to say he won't find pitchforks in New Zealand when all goes to hell? Maybe he'll get lucky and there will be intergalactic travel when he needs it. Being rich means you can buy anything, right?

John Galt and Dagny Taggart's view:

"Looking down, they could see the last convulsions...the lights of New York had gone out. Dagny gasped. "Don't look down!" Galt ordered sharply." ~Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

Last one out, turn out the lights! LOL!

"When you see those lights go out," said Galt, "then you will know that our job is done." (Atlas Shrugged)

Genocide on the scale of Pol Pot emptying Cambodia's capital city is such fun.

"The road is cleared," said Galt. "We are going back to the world." He raised his hand and over the desolate earth he traced in space the sign of the dollar. (Atlas Shrugged)

Pol Pot made the earth desolate. Only his goal was wrong. John Galt's goal is uber-goodness, so remember that while you suffer on the ground, as you see me jetting over you in capitalist style.

FSA expanded to include:

Section 8 - benefits the rentier class

SNAP fud-cards - benefits JPM & corporate fud-makers

other EBT pixel-spreader-cards - go out into the e-CON-me, as until swiped, they're worth-less.

"welfare" is merely payments for rental space, utilities (hello? corporations), foodstuffs, oh, and that GREAT

pharma, the Lord of U.S.All. . .

'course, I've left out the biggest .gov tit of 'em all,

the trillions disappearing into the MIC, literally.

FSA expanded to include:

How about just about everybody in healthcare and FIRE sectors of the economy? Take away over a trillion dollars of government spending in just healthcare, and practically every hospital in the U.S. closes its doors. We already know FIRE is bailout/government spending.

SNAP, EBT and Section 8 is barely a platoon compared to those armies of free shitedness.

So that the managers and officers of the so called nonprofits could then be part of the 1%. Don't you realize that 90% of donations to "nonprofits" never get to the intended beneficiaries.

Seattle Bruce - Why does he need to give away buckets of cash? He is educating. He is picking his battles. Time is money. He is taking the long view. Growth stopped long ago for 99% but he is right it is stopping for those at the very top as they lose consuming customers.

And he admits being a but lucky at the right place and time due to the Internet, the only real advancement in technology (and not a core one at that) since the 1950's. He is bold enough to state reality about the linkage between trickle down, divine right attitudes and correlation to police states which harm confidence.

I often think of leaving America but I have experienced enough spark of investors to stay. That and the first ammendment is still intact. Maybe like his parents I will have to flee ultimately to innovate. I hope not but I am a realist and less a dreamer these days.

When or if I see people jailed for speaking there minds that is the time to flee. Until then I will continue to attempt to outcompete. It has taught me invaluable lessons that can carry me through as an entrepenuar even if it means I must leave to do

He is wrong about revolutions in the traditional sense of violence. They don't work in our age. Non-traditional such as Soviet "pretending to work" do. Doesn't mean I will wait around 20-30 years for that though... Brain drain is something I now understand more fully.

Flee? You make me sick, you self-centered. panty wearing coward. How about standing your ground and fighting for something greater than yourself? Ahhhh, poor baby. You're afraid of getting hurt, aren't you?  Your plan is to hand your country over to them and resettle on some other feudal lord's property, is that it?

I believe that I have just read the thoughts of a man that will flee until he no longer can, then will settle and live on his knees rather than die with dignity on his feet.

I spit on you.
