What's The Biggest Business In Your State?
A state economy is nothing without the businesses that call it home. But, as WaPo notes, those businesses are not created equally - bigger businesses naturally have outsized influence, generating more revenue, paying more taxes and employing more people. As Bloomberg notes below, some are less surprising - GM runs Michigan, ExxonMobil runs Texas, and Berkshire Hathaway runs Nebraska but for Washington (home of Microsoft), it is CostCo that runs the state.
So what's the biggest business in your state?

New Fucking Mexico the largest biz... it's the feds...as for Presbyterian they are one of the few organizations that does a damn good job...
Even so, being married to a Presbyterian must not be so nice, if this song is correct:
(very last line of the song)

What's the tallest, second tallest and third tallest buildings in your city? BANKS!!! FUCKIN BANKS!
In my city, the third tallest building is an old-folks home.
JFC! They have the Alsaka Permanent Fund running Alaska!
I can't begin to tell you what a joke (a.k.a. complete BS) that is.

EDIT: Barely readable larger image here:

This article is "one-size-fits-all" bullshit!
For folks that do not know, the "PFD" or "Permanent Fund Dividend" is how all Alaskans (who meet the criteria) receive a dividend check for living in Alaska.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Permanent_Fund
The short version is that political leadership back in the 70s had enough gumption to take all the excess revenue coming in up front and save it for when revenue declined (i.e. scrape off the "peak" of the revenue graph and use it to fill in the "long tail" - leveling out revenue over time). Eventually Alaska is going to go broke, and potentially back to a territory, over the long haul due to lack of tax revenue sans oil (i.e. ain't enough people/business without oil money).
I exchanged comments on OilPrice.com a while back with a book author (John M. Miller - see Amazon for his qualifications) on the subject here:
http://oilprice.com/Energy/Crude-Oil/Will-Big-Oil-Lose-its-Alaska-Tax-Br...
I bought his book and am certainly more enlightened than I was before. Y'all probably don't care about Alaska, but if you do it is definitely worth the read/price and has useful non-public insights.
Anyway, the point is that the PFD just invests surplus income (which is pretty much peaking/has peaked) and passes out a dividend check to shareholders (folks who live in Alaska) every year. I can assure you I stay away from bars when they mail those checks!
I doubt that is the "influence" implied by the OP, thus my up-thread comment.

will last not much longer....
The BIGGEST business in every state is government ~ 50% of GDP.
The biggest employer in your county, buy numbers, is probably the school system, unless you have a mega prison complex.
The BIGGEST BY PAYROLL is the local hospital, even if it is "not for profit."
Shit, meet fan.
Compare the PFD to Norway where the ruling socialists use their sovereign oil fund for party perks and perpetual power. In effect, the men running the oil industry have turned it all over to the feminitst running the government and they never see anything more than their salaries and humongous tax bills.
At least in Alaska the slaves have seen a consistent return on their states natural wealth for decades.
That would explain why the Norwegians poll consistently happier and why it blows away the US on almost every measure of quality of life...
Including upward mobility....
Fucking happy and healthy socialists! Who the fuck do they think they are? Upward mobility. What is that?
Besides tech, what's one of the biggest industries in California? Answer: WELFARE!
34% Of the nation’s welfare recipients live in California but only…12% of the U.S. population resides there. In California, welfare benefits can exceed 96% of the state's median salary.
US will exchange Alaska for a few trillion in existing debt to a Sino-Russian consortium.
okay i'm joking...I like Life Below Zero.
"As Bloomberg notes below, some are less surprising - GM runs Michigan, ExxonMobil runs Texas, and Berkshire Hathaway runs Nebraska but for Washington (home of Microsoft), it is CostCo that runs the state."
Seriously? In many if not most states, partiularly rust belt states, 'government' is the largest employer....eclipsing all manufacturers combined.
Ex.
http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB1000142405274870405020457621907386...
"If you want to understand better why so many states—from New York to Wisconsin to California—are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, consider this depressing statistic: Today in America there are nearly twice as many people working for the government (22.5 million) than in all of manufacturing (11.5 million). ... It gets worse. More Americans work for the government than work in construction, farming, fishing, forestry, manufacturing, mining and utilities combined."
So who owns these 50 states again?
As I said below, the OP just took a dumb list of corp balance sheets, by state, and made a graphic.
No real reporting or analysis was done otherwise, thus my time invested digging at the conclusion made for Alaska, which is a state govt piggy bank/pleeb October drinking fund.
It might make sense for some states, but for many, it will be misleading. And, as you noted, it clearly ignores completely relevant data sets.
Shitty reporting, but fuck it - its Friday night - so it's probably good fodder for the booze-crowd at ZH to opine over and sound smart (as opposed that really dense treasury post they did - yikes).

Whichever Tyler is on duty tonight...
I asleep at the switch - and shame on him!

And it does not measure up to the ZH standards we've come to know.
It's puff fun piece... Chill...

Gubmint has to be the Biggest in my State and is the lagest landowner closely followed by Churches. Hospitals and universities are up there too employing thousands of peeples and give generous benfits and salary.
Tot government employees is 22.5 million.
But I always feel the aggressive career asses are at the federal level. But I could need straightening out here.
All Employees: Government: Federal

I never bothered to learn much about State Government. Used to be the Strike Breakers might have been state police or even national guard maybe. Got to add in Big city Mayors and police captains, maybe Pinkertons and hired toughs.
Anyway strikes me as worth pointing out that 2.7 million feds (with or without the Spy Agency personnel?) IS Small compared to the Trade, Transportation, & Utilities and then the manufacturing. But it doesn't make a difference the big money comes from Uncle Sugar, so that is where a lot of power is.

(Tallest building in Miami is a hotel/condo tower.)
The Federal Building and the State Office Building....
You better believe Regions runs Alabama. Poor hovels as far as the eye can see and then posh towers in Birmingham. It is so obvious what is going on there, I'm surprised no one has revolted. Anyone can throw a rock through the front window.
I threw up, then ROFLd, then felt sad about this map. Makes for a hell of a sports team name though. The Home Depot Hammers vs. the FedEx Couriers, etc.
Vs the ADM Supermarket Sweepers?
Nope. ADM Gene Jockeys.
The Hannaford Huskies!
Love it!
But the "Keurig Kupps"??
Nahhhh.. Needs some work there..
"Keurig Killers" ??
"Keurig Keggers"??
"Keurig Klippers"??
"Keurig Klodds" !!! Perfect!
And "Sprague Oilers"??
Sands Dead Hookers?
I think they just did a dumb sort on public data for (1) corporation HQs and (2) net assets.
Maybe useful/enlightening, but probably not properly researched at all leading to all sorts of false conclusions.

I had a lot of hope for you a few days ago. You are slipping to irrelevancy. (It is a lot like the Queens of the Stone Age. A great start and then heaping piles of shit.)
He's been a troll since post #1. I can't wait for the banhammer.
Ban NO ONE. Let the idiots speak.
Free Forest Sawyer
What about Alaska -- the "Independent Pioneer" state? LOL.
Truth is, they'd have a rough go of it, without state subsidies from oil revenues.
I don't know why that got junked so much. The largest business here IS the feds. We have Sandia National Labs, Los Alamos National Labs, White Sands Missile Range (that's something like 40 mi x 100mi,) Kirtland AFB, Holloman AFB, Cannon AFB, and that's just the DOD/DOE stuff off of the top of my head this morning. And that's in a state with a population of 2 million.
As for Pres, I've seen them save lives, but they had a hand in fucking my sister up pretty bad. As in she's crippled for life.
Hurrah for Wisconsin! Something to control my Johnson!
This guy upticked himself.
Those have been 90% of his upvotes since he got here a week ago.
Top Clown, sounds more appropriate. The guy quotes antiquated scripts, and knows NOTHING about trading.

I don't understand all the down votes. That's funny!
Government employees must not count?
Thank God for the productive class. Too bad the State keeps keeping them down. Think of how well off we'd all be if the CEOs made more money.
the state keeps them down to halt competition.
any really well paid CEO sees to this, through the state.
Are the Waltons are a creature of the State?
the implant on John-Boy's face is proof enough for me.
;-
Walmart is kind of an outlier, since discount retail lends itself naturally to consolidation, even without govt intervention. It wasn't that long ago that K-Mart ruled the roost in that industry.
However, even Walmart gets tax breaks and govt subsidies (direct and indirect) for most of its stores.
SNAP and the earned-income tax credit subsidizes a low min-wage which in effect subsidises Walmart....
LTER, I think you may have actually LIKED Sam Walton if you really knew him.
That said, in now way/shape/form do I defend his descendants.

By all accounts, Sam was a decent guy. He did, however, create a monster. And I'm not just talking about his kids and their heir spouses. Interesting that the best example I can think of for how well capitalism works, is also the best example of how it ultimately fails over the long-term. Go shop Wal-Mart today, talk to the employees who are forced to do Wal-Mart chants at the beginning of every shift, and go meet with the heirs if they will let you into their gated communities funded by Sam's vision. There's a lesson in there somewhere.
You are going to have to color me skeptical about the old pickup shitck. I suspected the dude was full of shit for a while.
Sam was the redneck's Uncle Warren...
Big Business and Big Government are not enemies, they are in fact highly symbiotic. BB provides campaign donations and lucrative jobs for retired public servants, and BG provides tax breaks and burdensome regulation that crushes BB's potential competitors. Everybody wins. Well, except the rest of us schlubs who pay taxes.
Ding, X gets the square.
The now fully captured "governmental regulatory process" is designed to crush any small operator competition among the big players in any enterprise. Mom & Pops have very little capital to work with to begin with and cannot afford the TIME or effort needed to invade an established BB space.
There is simply not enough hours in the day or compliance departments or accountants to overcome it all AND make a profit.
Period.
The strong survive. They cheat and they corrupt. In nmewn world, however, they ride horses with horns, so long as we take off the reigns. Unicorns -- like rainbows and pure free markets -- hate regulation of their essence.
Pick a potential industry to start up a business. Research the law/regs to start said business in each state. Personally took me near a month working full time, because the information isn't that easy to find and sometimes you have to play phone tag with actual bureaucrats to get the information you need.
I found that in most cases entry was onerouse, requiring large fees, lots of paperwork. Oh, and to get into the business I researched in a lot of the states one of the qualifications was that you had to have already been in the business X years in order to get a license to start in said business. Unless you were a lawyer. Lots of states the legislators build in a backdoor for themselves, basically "this law we just wrote applies to anyone who may want to compete with existing operations (our base) and us". Seriously it is like boys with their treehouse club telling all the other boys to FO, only with a lot of complicated legalese.
...some people are not stupid, they're full of shit. You know, you're hearing them speak, thinking- sounds reasonably intelligent... Ah! He's fulla shit!

"What's The Biggest Business In Your State?"
California isn't business friendly.
Freddie Mac? WTF is up with that, Virginia?
The biggest business here is a fraud cartel.
Micron Technology for Idaho, though that's unfair because of so many separate farms.
Hill Air Force Base for Utah. It's big.
Wyoming's is Arch Coal.
Billings Health and Rehab Center for Montana (surprising with a chunk of Bakken in Montana, albeit low producing chunk).
Sioux Valley Health Center for South Dakota. Also a big place.
IMO best use for this chart "big employer to check out if you want to move to X state".
huh, Chevron.
Chevronfornia? I prefer Shellifornia.
the Shelltherlands..
which reminds me, Cali's bout overdue for some legalized (marijuana) Freedom right about now.
WHACK-A-FORNIA
HollyWHACK
Fucking state taxes you like a motherfucker
Kind of surprising that Costco beats out Microsoft in Washington, but this is revenues, not profits. Freddie Mac and Govt Motors would certainly not be on the map if we were going by profits.
Before or after the recall charges?
What about Puerto Rico? Accountants' offices?
Bob Menendez' underage hooker farm.
IRS.
Damn! I thought for sure my state of "Chicago's" main business was emergncy room gun shot wounds and friendly gang fire
ADM's lobbying for ethanol mandates and farm subsidies is probably even more deadly via third world starvation.
Used to be Copper, Cotton, Cattle, Citrus and CLIMATE
Now we're told Climate be changing and Copper is gone.
Costco now sells (nearly) all the liquor in Washington State. We used to have an evil state monopoly on liquor, but now we get to pay 22% more. Costco has to recoup the money they spent buying the legislation.
I followed that vote closely. In the end, dumbass voters succumbed to the quantity/frequency of the ads, rather than the quality. The opposition made it clear that costs would rise if privatized, and many programs would end. Dumb fucking sheep deserve the bum _ucking they're getting.
And selection went down.
Brew your own and tell them all to fuck off.
Brew?
Some of us distill, or so I've heard.
That'll get 're done too.
I voted against it; but was over ran by the hordes who thought they were going to get it cheaper.
A bit dated. California is obviously not Chevron. It's HighSpeed Trains to nowhere and BS, or is that redundant?
WTF Iowa? I thought our biggest business was shit, of the GMO corn fed strain.
Frankenpoop.
The Military Industrial Complex is the biggest business in all of the United States of America. Every advanced economy in the world
spends it's largest expediture on miltary budgets compared to education and medicine.
wtf ?
The MIC is big but our private prison industry brings that bacon home in a way no other industry can..
Arizona leads the way when it comes to supporting surrounding states kidnapping for profit industry.
State motto is "we'll keep the lights on".
bnbvnbv
MN is not Cargill it is State Government by far the largest employer..
We used to build jets and write code, now just sell shit cheap, ...sigh...
Munitions, I don't believe in god, I believe in ammunition.
My state is the last house on the block, the last bubble in the idea cauldron.
Like Sparta, my pals laugh on this. My rights aren't given by any man, but by god, even if I don't believe in god. Before and after me. Voltaire shit.
I'm not Christian but ill make you bloody modern art, because the opposite doesn't do shit useful, no moon, no space, no industry, no competition, just fuckheads with a ugly virgin catalog.

Bath salts claim another promising talent.
Probably Crockodil and he's about to pull his face off.
sounds like he used some fucktarded translator.
I would say the satanics at Disney run Florida.
Chevron CA? Chevron revenues pale in comparison to apartment revenues, CA is in the business of farming humans and Mexican invasion.
Concur; but the rent rates are kept low on an individual basis since they pile up bunk beds in rooms like a barracks.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_California
Without the OilCos' Global Sources of Income, GSP drops like a rock. Note the Median Income of 39K-ish to the Median Home Px numbers. No Way a Single "Median Income Earner" will be able to afford a House nowadays.
And I bet that proportionally they are NOT the largest tax payers in that state!
Who is the biggest customer in the U.S.?
The Federal Government (i.e. stuid taxpayers)
Fascism
Okay, this is where the biggest businesses are headquartered by state. I wonder who the biggest businesses by sales are. And who the biggest providers of income (wages + salaries + transfer payments) are.

"Suicide net' approved for Golden Gate Bridge28 June 2014 Last updated at 02:55 BST
San Francisco bridge officials have approved the construction of suicide-prevention nets alongside the Golden Gate Bridge.
The bridge's board voted unanimously on a $76m (£45m) funding package."
How ridiculous.... it doesn't solve the problem just pushes it somewhere else, like banning feeding the hungry....
Why not put the £45m towards helping these suicidal people, no can't do THAT...
I bet if someone climbed to the top they could clear that net, if not there's always scare a cop (look at) and they'll blow your head off to keep the public safe (like children, Tommy's looking at me! Tommy your being unsafe, knock it off or I'll blow your head off!)
Yes, or instead of jumping 'off' the bridge, they could turn the other way and jump in front of a moving car/truck. That would be a lot messier to clean up and also be psychologically dreadful for the person who killed them.
But of course, they haven't thought of that, have they!
HHmmmm.......World Fuel runs Florida. Never even heard of them until this moment.
https://www.wfscorp.com/
Will definitely keep a weather eye out for these guys and their shenanigans in Florida politics.
Ironic....the "Sunshine" state.....where they piss on solar and are run by a fossil fuel company.
So what is it in massachusetts??
Boston, Banksters stronghold nr. #1
What is IT??!??
Damn that picture is too small
Just watched the Boston FED on google street, its a damn fortress.
Here's a bigger map CrazyCooter put up http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k8TTEPn3YVQ/U6jetPSOOSI/AAAAAAAACOM/9gOjJqxyB1w/s1600/Largest-Company-By-Revenue-In-Each-State-2014.jpg
The largest business in almost all of the 50 states is government.
Customer, lender, and purchaser.
The map is incorrect. Drug money runs the state of Florida. Without it, the economy here would completely be in the toilet.
They are all incorporated in Delaware. Map is bogus then again CVS has exclusive internet rights from Viagra from Pfizer. MA RI VA CA ( absolutely sure) it is government. Cosco can't figure how to have intellectual property on real estate tax in Double Irish Dutch sandwich.. Surprised GE in CT THEY PAY NO TAXES.

Almost every state it's service not manufacturing.
LMFAO Alaska ahahahaaha
The role of the government in America is changing on federal, state and local levels. Mandates often unfunded are fostered upon business organizations and private citizens. If unchecked government grows - it is the nature of bureaucracy to expand. This has not been good for the economy.
Sadly Government has become the biggest business in all states when you include the quasi government units like utilities, which are regulated monopolies, this would extend to and cover the groups trimming trees and running new lines and all those vehicles providing services to help meet the many government requirements that are all paid for with taxes and fees. Yes, government has creeped into every nook and cranny of the economy. The two articles below delve deeper into this subject.
