The Emerging German-Russian Axis

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Charles Gave via Gavekal Dragonomics,

This weekend has seen the European Union do a stitch-up deal so that arch-federalist Jean-Claude Juncker became Commission president. To be honest, who gets to play eurocrat in chief is of no great interest to me, but the manner of the appointment tells us lots about the changing nature of power in Europe. Governments from Stockholm to Rome reportedly opposed Juncker, but ultimately none would defy Berlin. Also this weekend, it is worth noting some ostensibly bland comments by Vladimir Putin at a German-Russian official function: “We value the accumulated potential of Russian-German relations and the high level of trade and economic cooperation. Germany, one of the European Union leaders, is our most important partner in enhancing peace, global and regional security.”

I would contend that we are seeing a decisive shift in the political character of Eurasia. History tells us that long wars have tended to be fought between maritime empires and continental empires. Think of Athens vs. Sparta, Carthage vs. Rome or Britain vs. Napoleonic France. The last big fight was between the US and the Soviet Union ended in favor of the maritime empire. As a result, since 1989 we have lived in an order ultimately run by the US military. But after some unpleasantness playing the role of global policeman, that maritime empire is in retreat.

The consequence of this move toward isolation is that a bunch of ‘continental empires’ are starting to challenge the monopoly of “legal” international violence that the US has exercised for the last 25 years. The most obvious challengers can be seen in the shape of Sunni Muslims across the Middle East, or in East Asia where a more confident and assertive China is stating its case for preeminence. Such struggles have the potential to become major regional problems, but what worries me more is the emerging continental alliance between Russia and Germany. Preventing such a partnership has for centuries been an idée fixe for French diplomacy, and for good reason. A combination of German industrial might and Russian raw materials and military strength would instantly create a colossus. The Poles, who have been perennial victims of engagements between Germany and Russia, are already visibly panicking, as they should be.

Historically, Paris has tended to ally with the Russians, not because it liked them but to prevent Germany from doing the same. The problem is that France has nothing to offer Russia (save some nice holiday homes and mooring berths for tycoons on its Mediterranean coast) and is, in any case, more focused on perfecting its own political and economic suicide.

This leaves the UK as the only shield against an alliance in the east. But this weekend we saw a clear statement of where Berlin sees its interests. Soothing words of “don’t go” may have been offered to London after the Juncker vote, but the incident has confirmed that the landscape has shifted from a European Germany to a German Europe.

The UK now seems set on a path to leave the EU within four years. The chances of London achieving the kind of root-and-branch treaty change that would keep it in the EU must rank as being close to nil. And as Winston Churchill said: “England does not belong to Europe, it belongs to the seas.” As was the case in the mid-20th century, the UK is unlikely to join a continental empire as a junior member and, when decision time arrives, it will stay allied with the US-led maritime empire.

In the old system, Europe was a kind of protectorate of the US maritime empire, a set-up that worked reasonably well. The challenge to the status quo comes from the east where Vladimir Putin has the clear goal of creating a new Russian/German alliance whose fief will run through Eastern Europe. If he succeeds, this will be a major loss for the maritime empire, especially if the UK has removed itself as an EU player.

There will be major political repercussions in the US from such a political carve up. The question will not only be how did “we” come to lose Asia and the Middle East, but also “our” most reliable and pliable ally—Europe.

Yes there are. Just off the top of my head, I can think of two major examples within modern times,

Look up, "Three Emperors' League" (or under its German name, the "Dreikaiserbund").

Think Bismarck FTW.

Then look up, "Holy Alliance."

Think Tsar Alexander and Prince Metternich FTW.

It's easy to find...google Reinsurance Treaty...my point is the relationship between Russia & Germany is historically long and strong...if Bismarck was Chancellor in 1914 ( he was dead by then) WWI would have never happened....people need to realize that Modern Europe starts (IMO) at the Congress of Vienna in ~ 1814-1815 and there is improtant/significant European history BEFORE WWII and Adolf.

Thank you for pointing out a few facts, largely unknown, I suspect, to American readers.

While there was that little incident long ago at the Neva, most of the German-Russian "rivalry" has indeed been diligently promoted by the French over many, many years:

The prerequisite for global war began with Japan!  That's right Japan... and, its autarky was grossly insufficient, having an Emperor as a living 'GOD'[diety]?incarnate-- which demanded moar respect...?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Sino-Japanese_War     The Japanese win with a superior navy and army (the airforce was incorporated in the Army-- spotting ballons and later bi-planes designed by the French    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotting_balloons   ) as   (8-1-1894/ 4-7-1895 ~ six months) Note1: The Japanese victory has for the first time in history, shifted the overall regional dominace in East Asia to Japan alone.                                                                                   Note2: This was the beginning of the Qing (the Qing Dynasty was imploding long before its demise) Dynasty downfall that collapsed officially in 1912... which incidentially was the incendiary (spontaneously ignites an empire conquest for Eurasia) for WWI,  which starts ~ 2 yrs. later on 7-28-1914

Japan wasn't satisfied! No, not at all? Japan has a war with Russia and wins! The war lasted ~ 18 months (2-8-1904/ 9-5-1905).   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Japanese_War

Really??? Before the 1860s  Germany was a loose confederation and weak. They posed no threat to Tsarist Russia.

World War I was a German War against Russia. In World War II it was more of the same.

I am not writing that any one party started Word War I. Where did I write that?

Germany made the declaration of war against Russia.

But the war had been brewing for some time previous to that.

But I have not read Solzhenitsyn's "August, 1914" as of yet.

But presently I am concerned with more current events.

However I am certain that will give me a greater breadth of understanding of this nightmare as the seeds for the upcoming conflict were sown then since History is on a continuum.

So far he has exercised a lot of patience with regards to Ukraine and the bluster and rhetoric of the Americans - Nuland, Biden, Kerry, Obama, McCain et al.

The keys are Germany and Turkey. Win them over to his way of thinking by being patient, dispassionate and logical - in comparison to the monkeys in the US State Department - Nuland et al and he wins.

NATO will be dead in the water when its evicted from Germany & Turkey, the UK will end up out of the EU in a couple of years when the political class in the UK starts campaigning for it. UKIP is just ahead of the curve at the moment.

This is all going to play out over the next few years.

During which there will be a financial/ economic crisis.

The question is - will that translate into armed conflict and potentially World War 3? That is the great unknown. My sense is Obama would try and avoid WW3, but his 'handlers' and many of the crazier neocons around him would love to go and whoop some Russian ass! etc. etc.

By the way - the election of Hillary Clinton as President in 2016 - if it happens - would seal the deal on all of this. She has demonstrated no ability to see outside the narrow confines that have been provided for her in an effort to appear "tough". And "tougher" than Obama.

Idiot.

Good points and your are spot on because without the massive infrastructure and bases both in Turkey and Germany that support large American military forces, NATO becomes irrevelant and the US ability to project power into Eastern Europe & Middle East becomes minimal and nonexistant Central Asia.

Putin is a thug and a Russian strongman but he is certainly playing his somewhat limited hand a lot better than his inept and outmanuevered US counterparts.  Pushed the US off his door step, has been careful to not outright push the EU into US/NATO camp (eg an outright Russian military invasion of Ukraine or the former Baltic republics would instantly do that), and been strengthing the Russian position everywhere.  Only holdouts have been the stouted US allies including Japan and the UK.

Tony, that's grossly inaccurate and irresponsible. Those kids died of natural causes over many many years.  They were buried next to a formal graveyard, not 'thrown down a well'.  The burials were unceremonious because the mothers 'conceived in sin'.  No, I don't like it either and it reflects terribly on the Ireland of the time.  But to suggest they were killed as part of some dastardly sexual or body part scheme is scandalously inaccurate.

No, not thrown down a well, thrown in a dis-used septic tank. Many of the bodies when examined were seen to have wizened limbs & poor of bone density. All symptoms of malnutrition and serious neglect. So maybe not a 'dastardly sexual or body part scheme', but actually, is the serial abuse of little children (in some cases taken away from the mothers whn they were 3yrs old or more) any better...

Good idea, pipelines need to stay away from Ukraine and Poland. In fact if as the article says the Poles are so worried about Germany and Russia maybe they should change their approach and stop acting like they are still in a war with the czars. Poland is it's own worst enemy. Well their leadership gives them a lot of help there just like in the US. Poland has some characteristics of the US, the people are given total subjagation and told to call it democracy.

Yes Poland is at it again with reports flying around that it was Polsih pilots flying Ukraine aircraft shot down by the eastern provinces of the Ukraine.

Incidentally there are unsubstantiated reports on the Saker site indicating that unmarked and unidentified aircraft have been flying low and shooting down Ukraine aircraft??!!

Great analysis but it only goes half way. You are missing out China. This will be the superpower alliance of the 21st Century. Probably starting with Russia/China.

First they will disable the dollar as a preventive strike to prevent the US from fighting back with its military and the end of NATO. A side effect will be the collapse of other currencies, leading to mainland Europe becoming financially Greater Germany. Scandinavia could become financially Greater Norway. The British Isles could become financially Great Britain (don't underestimate the ruthlessness of British bankers).

This would then become a giant trading block dealing with the US on its terms, not the other way round.

The US would finally have to deal with the consequences of raping the world with dollars over the past 40 years.

So true and such strange bedfellows wrapped in the same "blanket", although that may be changing with these types of announcements... But I digress with some needed clarity on my earlier comments.

Obama made that announcement about his chief concerns and priorities of a "bomb" going off in Manhattan as more significant than a war with Russia for obvious reasons 1) 9/11 and Israels powers of observation 2) The Israelis closing all there embassies 4 days before Obama made that little announcment. 3) Explosives... conventional, nuclear or both which is why we haven't and most probably will never have a second investigation as long as AIPAC and the ADL exist in our Country

After all if they did before they will do it again -to get what they want, even if it means their German and American counterparts become victims again!

It may seem like that from afar, but if/when a British In/Out referendum happens, a majority of Brits will vote to stay in. Fear of the unknown is the major reason.

It's been clear to me for a long while that Merkel wants to align Germany with Russia. She comes from East Germany, was schooled in Russia and speaks the language fluently. Apart from that, where will Germany export its stuff to now that the EU is bankrupt?? Russia is the obvious choice. Huge potential demand there for BMWs, Mercs, Audis/VWs and Porsches.

And although many EU-crats won't admit it in public, they are mostly old commies and fascists and want to drag Europe towards Russia which is much more to their taste. They are working to create a new Eastern Empire that is bigger than the US Anglo-Saxon Empire.

Please do not forget that Russia is Germany's 4th largest export market.

Much of the exports are in the form of hi tech process equipment and machinery, manufactured by the backbone of Germany's economy - the family-owned business.  German businessmen are protesting to Berlin, that any further economic sanctions will badly damage these businesses.  If German businesses are not able to execute orders from Russia - if German banks are unwilling to finance these deals - then, the German manufacturers face the loss of this business to other manufacturers; the loss of repeat orders; and ultimate ruin.

What follows is a crude Google translation from a recent article on this subject:

Job slump in business in Russia for machine builders
German Economic news | 23:06:14, 13:27 | 16 comments

A significant drop in orders and financing problems burden the Russian
operations of the German machine builder. Within a month, the Russian
orders have fallen by 60 percent. In addition there exists due to
possible sanctions because of the Ukraine-conflict "extreme"
uncertainty, as industry representatives.

In business with Russia the German machine builders prepare in orders
and financing problems increasingly worried. Once the Exports declined
by 17 percent due to the already weak economy and the ruble decline in
the country in the first quarter, the industry now gets to feel the
effects of the Ukraine crisis. A survey of the industry association VDMA
in his company from mid-April to mid-May revealed that inquiries and
orders from Russia have gone back to over 60 percent. "There certainly
several factors come together," said Monika Hollacher of the VDMA
foreign trade on Monday to Reuters.

In addition to the economic slowdown would give to 45 percent of the
German mechanical engineering that funding problems made it difficult to
Russian business. There would also be order cancellations, delays in
import payments, payment defaults as well as delays in the export
control. In addition, because of possible further sanctions against
Russia rule before an "extreme" uncertainty. Many machine builders did
not know whether they still should accept an order from Russia. They
fear that this then can not be settled.

For the German machine builders Russia is the fourth most important
export market worldwide. Last year, the manufacturers had machinery and
equipment worth around 7.8 billion euros exported to Russia. That was
5.2 percent of total machinery exports all over the world. The main
products include construction and civil engineering machinery,
agricultural and materials handling equipment as well as tools and food
processing machines. The German Engineering Federation (VDMA) According
to Germany is the number one China, Italy and the U.S. in the
international machinery suppliers to Russia. The predominantly
medium-sized sector with approximately one million employees makes about
200 billion euros. It includes also listed companies such as
ThyssenKrupp, Gea or DMG Mori Seiki (formerly Gildemeister).

Putin is going to incorporate financial and cultural alternatives into his new Eurasia. Between FATCA and our home grown cultural marxism I expect he will gain a lot of friends, allies, customers, and clients as the world looks for an alternative.

"It is looking increasing likely that China will not sign an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the US on Fatca. This will be of huge concern to the US government because Fatca's strength is reliant upon every country in the world agreeing to abide by its rules. No other country in Asia has yet agreed to a Fatca IGA either, and countries in the region, and indeed across the world due to China's enormous - and growing - economic and political power, are influenced heavily by Beijing on such issues."

"The US still has no plans to restart talks with Moscow on Russian banks joining the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) as the the law comes into effect on Tuesday, a US Treasury representative said during a news conference.

“We have suspended our talks on FATCA with Russia, and they are still being suspended,”

The cows dry, trees stunted, no more flowers, no more purity, ambition, corruption, the age of Kali, the black time."

We now see the crux of why Europe wants no part of Obama's plan. The ramifications of Russia cutting off the flow of natural gas to Ukraine are massive and will immediately effect all of Europe. The idea of America getting involved or jumping into a war in Ukraine would have been hard to imagine a few years ago. The potential for this to escalate into a major shooting war is real.

Allowing events to deteriorate into a major war or possibly into what some see as World War III is insane. Remember the location of this as a military confrontation is right in Putin's backyard and this is a strong advantage for Russia. It is silly to think Putin and Russia will back down. This means poking the bear is not a smart move. More on this subject in the article below.

All of the old religious axions wil prevail, .. you know the meek inhabiting the earth etc. Unfortuanely this will take place after an earth polar axis shift. Nuclear radiation will destroy everything. The Began and the beast prophecy will not hold.

The nefilim after the earth has cooled down from all the nuclear generators half life, they will return better genetics. With an earth experiencing polar shift and serious earth changes, hey get on with the earthy quips, I have a sense of humor.

Thought of another way, hand the new American illegals AK’s; set them free in your neighborhood.

How long could you and your’s withstand an ISIS style attack?

No offense.

Russia and Germany are a natural for progress and prosperity - maybe Germany can rid itself of the Ami Affe's and become a real nation again - and get its gold back. Engloand belongs to the 3rd world, just a bunch of afro/paki/arab Islam mullatos, done as can be.

Germany buys energy products from Russia.  Germany has gold on deposit in the Federal Reserve bank which the US hasn't returned to Germany as requested.   Now suppose the Germans write a check against the gold and give the Russians the check to pay for energy.  Putin presents the check to the Fed requesting payment on demand.
